    Aeterna Noctis is a challenging 2D hand-drawn action platformer, a Metroidvania with thrilling combat that will keep you on the edge of your seat and heart-stopping platform sections that will put your skills to the test. Play as the King of Darkness and explore 16 connected areas in an epic journey to regain your powers.
    Unnumbered years ago, the supreme god Chaos created the Universe and the world of Aeterna. After populating it with different races and creatures, he appointed powerful rulers to govern them and show them the way. But soon they turned against their Creator, seeking to take the world for themselves; and gathered their subjects in two groups that fought each other -- and thus gave rise to war, death and hatred.
    The all-powerful Chaos was angered, and in His terrible wrath He cast a terrible curse upon the rebellious leaders. He named them King of Darkness and Queen of Light, and condemned them to keep fighting each other forever, until the end of time. Not even death would free them from this doom, for Chaos granted them the Gift of Immortality -- so that even if one managed to defeat the other, they would be reborn, and regain their powers to continue their eternal war.
    The world of Aeterna Noctis features a challenging difficulty system that scales progressively as you the player go through the game and get more experienced with the controls and unlock new skills. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, always offering a challenge with each encounter, but also resulting in a great sense of pride after completing each challenge.
    In a game with such a difficulty curve that scales with progression, Aeterna Noctis features extremely responsive controls, allowing for precise movement and combat.
    Intuitive world design allowing the players to exploit the precise movement controls of the character, allowing you to overcome each challenge in a multitude of ways. As you become more skilled in the game, it allows you to get even faster completion times.
    Featuring an immersive and emotional story with incredible moments, filled with unexpected twists that will immerse the players into the rich world of Aeterna Noctis.
    Worldbuilding in Aeterna Noctis is completed by handcrafting each asset, animation and environmental detail in the game using traditional illustration methods by the art team, giving rise to a vibrant and beautifully assembled world.
    Aeterna Noctis features a defined path for the storyline, but allows the player to take whatever path and pacing to navigate the expansive non-linear map featuring 16 different zones, interconnected in a classic metroidvania style.

    to say this 80 to 100 hrs juggernaut of a Metroidvania doesn't have depth after only playing it for 1 hr1/2 is like saying you've been to Mars because you once saw movie about Mars. If you carefully look at the different ingame menus and stats that's ample enough information to deduct how deep this game gets. I recently 100 % Aeterna Noctis and I would say is one of the most challenging and most rewarding game I've ever played. I've played every single souls game and most Metroidvanias out there for reference. Aeterna Noctis is quite memorable but like I say its also quite difficult and I reckon is not for everyone. it does get deeper and better as you move forward.

    About the game speech language:
    "The developers even created an in-universe language for the spoken in-game dialogue, called Aeternan. It’s a small touch, which goes a long way towards making Aeterna feel exotic and immersive."

    The game has 2 phases, before teleport arrow and after. The first part is more or less a tutorial. It's a really long one but that's what it is.
    Exploration, dodging, platforming, everything is about teleport arrow. You don't need i-frames because you can be wherever you want, whenever you want, you just need to plan ahead.
    There are a few builds and quests too, but everything comes after the big tutorial that's 1/4 of the game.
    This is one of the best games ever made in terms of platforming, the only better one I can think of is Celeste. Even some bosses are platforming sections.
    The only real issue is the lenght of the "tutorial".

    This is a 50-80h game and progress is spread out through most of that time pretty equally. There's a lot of combat variety later on + ways to avoid damage completely. First hours are frustrating but this game has a crazy depth, almost overwhelming at times. Plus it's bascially Path of Pain - the game. The further you go, the crazier it gets. HK is easy compared to this game, imo.

    Just want to state my opinion here, because this video almost stopped me from getting this game. Glad I decided to try it out, because my experience has been completely opposite to FC's. I've been having a blast so far (and have made it much farther than in the video) and I think this game would be greatly enjoyed by anyone who likes Hollow Knight AND Celeste. If you're not into platformers this game will probably be really frustrating. But so far I haven't been frustrated by a damn thing and I've found the atmosphere and combat quite enjoyable. The way I see it is that many of the complaints in this video can be traced to FC's expectations about how a metroidvania "should be", rather than just trying to take this one for what it is. That's fine, but remember it's just an opinion-like mine. So what if you don't fight the first boss for an hour? So what if your second weapon and second movement ability don't come until the end of the second hour? Heck, when I first played Hollow Knight I think it took me about that long to get the dash. This game is turning out to be absolutely massive, packed with tons of platforming challenges, characters, quests and hidden secrets. And I am having a blast :D

      Hollow Knight has very vast playing sections without getting any movement upgrades. FightingCowboy is just randomly nitpicking instead of objectively analyzing flaws in the game. This is one of the videos that makes me realize hes not really a valuable reviewer.

    I mean i get some of the complaints, but the amount of time you spend ragging on about I frames is absurd. Even HK doesn’t give you any defensive options until super late game. And the “parry” is not even a parry. Plus it’s the exact same combat that you have in HK….literally. It takes you about 1h if you don’t know where you’re going to get your first non-nail skill there. And the dash is about 2 to 3h into the game. Again….very weird complaints, while also saying HK is better.

    • @FightinCowboy
      @FightinCowboy  2 года назад +7

      Hollow Knight has a ton of expansions to combat throughout the game and you get quite a few of them early. Spells, pets, attack charges. We were 90 minutes into this with only basic attacks. HK's early bosses aren't bullet hells. They also don't take an hour to show up. The chests in HK don't shit the loot out into the abyss when you open them.

    • @cosminpislariu4540
      @cosminpislariu4540 2 года назад +6

      @@FightinCowboy I never said any of those were not valid complaints. I don't even mention most of them in my comment, so don't know why you're bringing it up. The combat upgrades I think you are misremembering, you get them way later than you think. It takes roughly 1h on a completely blind playthrough to get to false knight and get your ranged attack afterward. It takes roughly 2h after that (so 3 in total) if you're exploring everything you can until you get your dash ability.
      Just to be clear, not saying this is better than HK (for me at least it isn't). But the pace at which you get upgrades is roughly the same. Yes, bosses are a bit much, but they are also much fewer than HK and more intricate (more attacks, more patterns etc). Yes, not having s or s with a cd like in HK was a mistake, and some other decissions are sketchy, but you're looking at HK with rose tinted glasses, they are very similar games, this one is just more punishing. This is also a platforming heavy game, with very difficult sections of platforming, so it might not be to your taste either way.

    Lots of odd objective statements claiming things are bad about the game. I understand not liking something and it not matching your tastes but this seemed hyper critical in a very negative way.
    Although I'm almost certainly biased because this game was some of the most fun and rewarding experiences I've had in gaming in a long time.
    Maybe this game would have sayed your impatience better with a SotN style beginning where you start with all the cool stuff and it gets yoinked from you because the combat gets extraordinarily varied.

    I'm kind of regretting buying this now. if you can't beat the first boss easily, I've got no chance. I played for an hour and a half, and am about 25 minutes behind where you are at. I don't mind platformers, I completed Celeste, but no parry/shield/s, I gave up. At least if I do go back to it, I can follow your route, so I know what to expect.

    Horrible take. Game is a masterpiece, but unfortunately it's either one of those that will bloom later on, when someone will truly do the game justice and explain why it is so, or it will always remain an underrated game. But for sure it isn't for everyone, and just because the vast majority can't see, understand or appreciate the beauty of it, it doesn't mean it's not there, because there really is. But consider it a more abstract piece of art that will look like "nothing" to ordinary eyes. Although even those pieces can bloom wonderfully in time when the right people will see it for what it is and describe it as such, that even the rest might start seeing it after.

    • @everlosth
      @everlosth 2 года назад +3

      @@FightinCowboy What you played is pretty much the tutorial. You could say it's the equivalent of finishing Asylum in Dark Souls 1 and already having an opinion about the game in its entirety. Can't be done, basically, unless it's prejudice.
      I might still prefer Hollow Knight's vibe, artstyle and music, but as an overall experience... this game surpasses even hollow knight. After this game, I don't know if I could enjoy Hollow Knight the same. Yes, it might not be as "deep" in the sense that the story is told more straightforward and you don't have to really look into it or watch lore videos (same as for DS), but that doesn't necessarily make it worse. The world of Aeterna is beautiful, vast, with lots of lore and history hidden in the details. And the best part is the challenging and fun gameplay. I was able to relieve the same feeling I had when I played my first dark souls or hollow knight for the first time. Same thrill, excitement and sense of accomplishment. It not only brought back those nostalgic, lively feelings, but I felt them on an even greater level. Even the area of the second boss of this game feels like some "path of pain". And that area itself is still teaching you how to play the game, 'prepares' you for things later in the game that are so much harder. It's longer than Hollow Knight, and much much harder, but also way more fun to play with more gameplay mechanics than hollow knight.
      It's not for everyone though, and it truly is a shame and "unfair" that until some big streamer who will finish the game does it justice, or a video about how great the game truly is will blow up, the image of the game will be stained by people who only played the tutorial or got stuck at some part early in the game because it was too hard.

      I'm 40 hours into the game and I can confirm it's a masterpiece. It's not mindless difficult but the difficulty is tied to a learning curve that will alllow you to defeat the bosses at the ending of each stage. I'm not the super player, haven't even beat hollow knight and I'm up to the 5th boss in Noctis Mode. The difficulty is very rewarding and the graphics are amazing. My only complaint is the main character's design; if they went for a more charming main character, this game would raise in popularity. You can't really speak about this game with 1.5 hours into the game, without seeing the skills evolve and how all platforming sections are different to the rest. Hopefully this game will get the recognition it deserves.

For me it's 3D full movement or at the least a isometric viewpoint with good mini-bosses and a variety or more realistic looking enemies. Just my opinion..
