Late in the show, Bette is surprised by Barry Manilow and Harlettes Melissa Manchester, Jenifer Lewis, Linda Hart, Charlo Crossley Fortier, and Gail Cantor, who each get to tell some stories about working with The Divine Miss M.
What a quick talker Bette Midler is. I could listen to her forever. A very intelligent, sharp, creative, talented, and funny woman. Thank you for sharing this gem.

Bette Midler was NOT happy that she did this and it almost cost her her friendship with Barry Manilow. He was furious that Bette was angry about it.

Roseanne was the most gracious host.
No she wasn't. She double crossed Bette here and springed a surprise on her after Bette had explicitly stated pre interview that she wanted no surprises. Then was forced to sing without preparation. It ended her friendship with Manilow for years.

Not as prophetic as Roseanne talking about her fears of the internet consuming people's souls when that is exactly what happened to her. She let is consume her and she's now a very strange, weird old woman.
I still loved the show, Bette & Roseanne together, fun to watch them both

I was thinking the very same thing!! This is only about a year after the Roseanne sitcom wrapped up, and I really love this Roseanne, where she’s warm and funny and sweet......I didn’t care what the critics said, I enjoyed the talk show! This episode and the Roseanne cast reunion were my favorite episodes. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Fast forward many years. Bette told the story of this day. She says she's always hated surprises so she was not thrilled when she saw Barry and the girls. She went through the motions of singing and laughing along, but you'll notice that she never does say, "oh it's so great to see all of you!" , etc. Instead she say it's evil rosannes a stinker, that's shell remember this ( like to get revenge one day). The next day Barry called her on the phone and said, " you know, you could have had a really good time yesterday, but you chose not to. You chose to be stuck in your ways". Bette said he was absolutely right and she felt terrible about it and they didn't talk for a long time, until one day he called her out of the blue and said he'd had a dream the the two of them recorded the Rosemary Clooney songbook and asked if she'd have any interest in doing that. If you noticed- she told Roseanne that Barry had taken her to a Clooney tribute the night before. She was so happy to hear from him again that she jumped at the chance to go back into the studio with Barry.

She sang "I used to have friends but they're gone." And Barry laughed while she shot subtle daggers at Roseanne behind those lashes.
There's an interview with Bette and David Letterman, where she says she was annoyed with this surprise .

Bette Midler did NOT like being surprised by Barry Manilow. They apparently were still fueding and hadn't made up.....until 2 months after this show.
Really? Why??? I don’t understand why a surprise visit from an old friend is fraught with so much drama? Can someone explain?

If this is the surprise that upset Bette and caused a rift b/t Bette & Barry. Well, she handled it like a pro. She gave a great performance, sang perfectly, smiled etc. Perfect! And I understand her position. A morning taping, who knows how often she warms her vocals daily & HE KNEW DISTINCTLY THAT SHE HATED SURPRISES. I love them both, but she was right! No surprises was her rule & then to put her on the spot? She smiled and she shined! Just too bad their friendship took a hiatus for a while. But they're pals again. Life is short. All of my idols are in their 70s now 🙂. (Well, I am in my 50's). They were all in great form and kudos to Midler for not just hiding her discontent, but acting like it was fun! Truly a pro, she had you believing it was not just OK, but fun for her ! Naughty, naughty Barry 🙂 💙 to all involved, especially the chantuese & certainly an actress here, Bette Midler. (if she was truly upset, turning that corner to see the set-up, she did a hell of a job fooling you - an actress & singer READY ON THE SPOT. Brava!

I lost the show -- with Trump and Michael Moore. For that show, it was amazing how the issues are still the same. Michael Moore, it turns out, has virtually proven himself a prophet. It was a great show, and you might have been Trump's first vote.
1998 was only the beginning.....now per Nostradamus the anti-christ has risen. The audacious bawler has trumpeted into the land of honey.

Glad to hear that Barry found personal hapiness too.... So bizzare that you just don't know people's journeys yet we think we do. If I could change anything I'd try and talk to Rosie and offer her some friendly advice about that computer thing. Go with your gut girl n if you ever get the opportunity to " tweet " in the future... just take pause before you send sweetie cuz I firmly believe she's not a racist person. Mental illness can screw you up and I hope that Rosie finds peace in her life. I dont throw people away, if anything I give them the chance to reddem themselves before I throw in the towel on them, depending on the circumstances and the severity of the situation at hand. If I could go back in time maybe I'd go to the day Rosie was hit by that car and stop that from happening. Meanwhile, I'll just hafta stick to clips on here and revel in the reruns.... 👍 😉 ❤
