@Brandon Schuler your efi system is clogged with stale fuel and you need to check if your getting power to the starter. Could be solenoid or a faulty safety switch.
2vintage hey I have a 2003 Yamaha warrior and I’ve been rebuilding it and I can get it to start and run with the choke on but as soon as I cut it off it dies. I’ve cleaned the carburetor 4 times really good but today I noticed the needles C-clip is not on the needle so it’s stuck down could this cause it to die with no choke... ps I’m waiting for a rebuild kit to come in to fix it just wanna know in advance
Ever since I started watching your channel I’ve been inspired to do more and explore new things mechanically, keep up the good work this channel is gonna get huge!
The 400’s are some powerful machines, and fast! Im not positive what model mine is but it didn’t have racks when I got it off my dad. Added on a hitch and fitted a rear utility rack, now she’s a useful machine around the property.
I picked up a 94 exactly like your machine. Actually watched this vid a few times before buying it. Mine is also in good condition and I rode it around for at least an hour the first day. Very quick machine compared to my ATC. I have a few parts on the way and hopefully will have a strong mule for a long time
Yup, I've been looking at ads for a while, and seeing this guy's videos can really make you jealous. For 450 euros here in Croatia, you couldn't even find a used 250cc chinese quad in decent condition.
Tip on the exhaust: Knock off any loose and heavy rust and then paint with phosphoric acid. Paint will eventually burn off but the acid will condition "blue" the metal. One and done!
I bought one of those last summer for 35.00 and two packs of cigarettes! it was stuck but after soaking the cylinder in "marvel mystery oil for bout 2 weeks" I freed it up without have to take it apart.
Damn man what a hell of a deal, I've been trying to find one for cheap around here for a long time....but the days of finding cheap deals here are long gone.....people are insane around here pricing shit like a 1990 4x4 that's been sitting out in their yard in pieces for years for $1,000!Drives me crazy
See in france banshee are 3500€ atleast... (u won't even find one right now for less then 4500€...) Ltz 400 road legal are 4000€ not road legal 1700-2200€ prices went crazy in 2020... (banshee where always expensive but now people go even more crazy.. 6000€ cheapest i found...)
Being thats its a polaris the shifting issue you should always start with the clutches in the belt drive. That is what cause shifting issues with a polaris most of the time
I just got a 2000 sportsman 400 4x4 the other day for $400. It has no spark but I'm sure it's because the stator looks horrible. I road it 5 months ago before it was parked for the winter and it ran great.
Just came across your video on this quad. I see you got it seven months ago And I am wondering why you have not posted any updates on this? It would be interesting to see if you had to do much more work on this machine!! Great video and you did get a fabulous deal on that quad from what I can see.
Hey that's great, I just bought a 1997 Polaris Magnum 425 6x6 for $300 and I am very excited to start working on getting it going even if I have to engine swap it with a 1982 honda atc 200 engine 😂😅.
I bought a Polaris 300 4x4 2 stroke about a year ago for 350$ didn’t run and never did get it running but had the thing tore inside out and sold it for 700$ so I guess it worked out
Try this the older ones cross gears in low if it get crossed put it firmly into low pull the lever over to the right from neutral and firmly push it into low til it clicks than firmly hold it to the right and pull it back it will disengage low every time I used to work on those old popos this works everytime u can try poking a small hole in the boot on the gear shifter and spray some lubracrent into it with the red end spout not penetrating oil lubracrent
suppression. Aservice manual and you can fix any thing on that beautiful 400.I worked on these old polarizes for 35 years it will treat you right if you take care of it.
be very careful with the power washer-- i lost my decals once the water gets under and away they go great find good deal you will have to get your dad to build bigger garage soon stay safe
It's pretty cool that its 2 stroke. I never see any 2 stroke four wheelers around where I live here in P.E.I Canada. I have and I see lots of 2 stroke dirt bikes but never 2 stroke four wheelers, except for banshees. Hahahaha, you and Charlie love 2 smokers like I do. Love your channel Joe. By the way, how old are you and Charlie?. I've been watching you guys since you made your channel
I just got a 2006 Suzuki lt z250 for 450. With a title. Had 111 hours on it but Was in a flood. Did an oil change and cleaned the carb. Quick 2k in my pocket
The same exact thing happened to my grizzly it would shift into any gear you had to fight it. And we just rode it like that for a long time thinking it was the shifting linkage. But it wasn’t it was the primary clutch and we kept riding it and it completely destroyed the timing chain guide and and chain. And it flung the chain all around the motor and destroyed it. And it kept turning over with the key not even in it and almost caught on fire. So I’d look in to that.
I had one, it was lots of fun. Maybe a little quirky. Hub oil, the rattle in the clutch, the oil/water seal failure in the coolant pump, do I trust the oil injector? My favorite was the metal front and steel frame. I'd make saplings snap over to make trails.Lots of breakable plastic on later versions. Good times til sold. I'd like another.
@@cadenwest1542 want to get a 400EX when you can push down trees with this thing well my dad at the same quad and it was awesome it gets up to speed super quick have super monster power is awesome
Nice! I did something similar with a Yamaha Warrior, guy was asking 800, but it would barely idle. So I said 600 or no deal and he did it! New spark plug, new battery, carb clean and she's running beautiful for pretty cheap. Then I got carried away with cosmetics lol!!
I had a 2000 Trailboss 325 and traded it for a Harley, then sold the Harley for 1k, loved that thing so I'm currently thinking about picking up the same matching you just got, a 95 I believe it is a Trailboss 350, anyways they are really fun.
Love the videos! I recently picked up a 1996 Polaris 400 Sportsman 4x4 from a guy who barely rode it. It only has 84 miles on in and it is very clean. I have a couple of questions for you because I want this baby to last for a long time. -The owner before me took the oil pump off and has been directly mixing oil and gas with a 40:1 Polaris Blue Oil (3.2oz) per 1 gallon). He said it runs fine but it does seem to smoke a lot when I am riding it around. Would it be a good idea to put the oil pump back on? Also what kind of oil do you use and what ratio per gallon, and what test gas do you use? -Sometimes the machine will not turn off, so i have to let it run out of gas via the petcok. Any suggestions? -The front left brake is very tight and I can barely squeeze it enough to set the lock brake. Any suggestions? Response would be awesome, thanks!
You got a good ATV for next to nothing, love the older Polaris atv's, a friend of mine had an old 86 Polaris trail boss 250, that thing would fly, didn't having working brakes for awhile, it was a beast, still a big fan of Honda atv's, I had a 2004 Honda rancher 350 2 wheel drive, it would run 65, it was all stock, pretty fast for a smaller size atv
I have to "first come first serve" everything I sell BC a lot of people like to screw around, dilly dally, flake out, what have you, this adds urgency.
I have a 94 400L just the same but red and gray wish my throttle response was thrust good damn that’s nice wow! and I even boiled the carb done a lot to it
I bought a 2 stroke 400 Sportsman a few years ago for cheap. Fixed the overheating exhaust, muffler was plugged and redid the seat cover. Sold it for $2,500! Was a very zippy machine and rode nice. Looked identical.
I bought my 97 sportsman 400l 4x4 for 100 bucks and is mint.. if I could send you a pic I would.. shes bad.. currently putting a lift and new suspension.. I've also relocated the radiator..
I just got a 2001 Polaris sportsman 500 4x4 for $450 and but it didn't run when I got it but everything else worked. Dude,my polaris is doing the same deal with the shifting ,except it grinds when i try to put it in gear running ,it goes in smooth when i turn the engine off .Thanks for the video this may fix my problem . I hope. I believe its idling too high as well which may make it grind when I try to shift .
Hey man if the ETC switch is corroded will I still get power to dash or anything? I picked up a 94 400 sportsman and it's a basket case with some of the wiring.

That's one of the best condition of that model I've ever seen. They're usually beat to death around me!
You have to get a 400ex! You will have so much fun with it. Doing races against the dirtbikes and top speed runs would be great content!

What a very cool bike! Here in europe al these bikes go for so much more even if they are broken
Yep always
Can't really find them in the states for that price either
You should find a polaris Xpedition, the only polaris shifter. I just picked one up that came with a nice trailer and plow for 2k.

I think this is the next four wheeler I am going to buy. Thanks for the video.
i had a red and grey '94 400L. it's crazy that besides the banshee and it's scrambler cousin, this was one of the fastest atvs you could buy then.

Yep that's if you want 4x4 to work in reverse
That's a really nice quad! I got a 2019 Polaris sportsman 110 efi

I bought the same quad today (not running) for $300
i recently found one here in Ontario Canada EH for 3200 Canadian oviuos ,lol mint shape just like this one ... love the Power ...
No way! I just got the same exact quad yesterday in a trade for a Mojave
U were better off keeping the Mojave lol....i miss mine
I just got a 2001 Polaris sportsman 500 4x4 for $450 and but it didn't run when I got it but everything else worked. You need to diagnose that funky engine sound its making
Its a Two Stroke. Not 4 stroke like modern ATV's and Dirt Bikes. Two stroke were the most commonly used in the 90's and earlier. Cheap to make and highest performance for the costs. EPA laws were made and they were banned because Two Strokes burn oil mixed with the gas to lubricate all the moving parts. 4 stroke motors are like a car engines. The oil in those are stored in the drain pan and there is a pump that pushes oil through a bunch small lines and holes and crankcase and oil sprays directly on the moving parts. 4 strokes also have to do 4 full "revolutions to complete a 1 full ignition cycle. Fuel, Intake, Ignition+Combustion and then exhaust last and then repeats over.. Two Strokes make two revolutions to make one full cycle. Gas+Air and then Ignition+combustion+ exhaust. Then repeats.
U wanna see that thing rip? Fashion a 250cc 2stroke expansion chamber on it. It’ll have a monster power band
@Jay Franklin This is one brand I've never owned so what's the good and bad on the Polaris? They don't seem to sell good in my area but I've always been intrigued by them just because they are so different from the Japanese offerings.
Had a 96 years back thing hauled ass would hit around 70 but rpms were so high could feel the motor starting to shake never blew up tho
In ontario, that same atv would be up for 1200 Canadian probably around 1050$ US
My uncle had this he died but this exact atv has been sitting in his shed for over 10+ years hoping to restore it
Sure does go fast, but I’d say do a carb clean or replace with carb kit so it will start smooth.
Think you need to check your speedo is working properly coz that looked a lot faster than 55 try using your phone for a top speed test with it 👍👍👍
Dude,my polaris is doing the same deal with the shifting ,except it grinds when i try to put it in gear running ,it goes in smooth when i turn the engine off .Thanks for the video this may fix my problem . I hope. I believe its idling too high as well which may make it grind when I try to shift .
Hey man if the ETC switch is corroded will I still get power to dash or anything? I picked up a 94 400 sportsman and it's a basket case with some of the wiring.
I just bought a running and driving 2000 Polaris scrambler 500 for 340$
Great find!
Does it need work?
Nice quad man you should get a raptor 660 or a 700 there quick and reliable
The foot brake is a emergency brake the one on the left of the handle bars is the main brake
you can turn the 425 to a 500. there is some info on internet and youtube !
I just bought the same 4x4 $50 doesnt look as good as yours but $50 made me do it but it runs brakes were seized waiting on parts
She's fast for a work quad... 2 stroke power!
Did you check all the fluids ?
I just picked up a 95 sportsman with 400 miles for 250..only thing wrong is it has a minor fuel leak....score
Hey I just bought a 1994 xplorer 400 2 stroke and was wondering what your bikes top speed is. I clock mine with another machine at max of 35 on long straight slightly down hill. I've run it with the clutch over off to make sure the belt shifts all the way foward which is does now that I replaced the belt. I'm assuming 35 is slow for a 400 2 stroke when my 95 trail boss 250 will do 45mph
This went 57 mph
Out of curiosity, how much did you sell this for? I bet you made a good flip of change on it?
Sweet atv for Jade.
U should do a mud quad build on it
What a score... Enjoy it :)
Nice find that's a score for $450
Omg thanks so much for another ATV vid
I've got the same model and it flys
Make sure you change the fluid in those hilard clutches or they will burn out on you. There getting hard to find replacement parts for.
Yeah a utility machine shouldn't sound like that... I agree and prefer a 4 stroke
My dad and I were going to go buy a yamaha moto-4 for $75 but they wouldn't text us back and we were the first ones to message her but we were already in a different town and she sold it to someone else.
