Dude when you said it turned out to be a positive that you had to fix the battery yourself, because now, you can help others with the same issue; I just thought to myself "what a wonderful human being this man is" :)
I wish you all the best, and thank you for all the info you shared
Thanks for the kind words 😁
Thanks for a great video. When cars now begin to have upgradable batteries and more upgradable software it really changes our notion of what a car is. This it the future!
It's no different to installing a different engine or gearbox in an ICE car
A classic lemons to lemonade story.
250km = 155 miles 👍🏻
Be careful unplugged my home. To get him not drive's Only
I think it is impressive that you're able to find upgrade options, so many people are having a hard time finding a place to get reasonably priced battery replacements, but it shows you what the possibilities are with EV's. You have to worry more about rust and other problems than electric motors going bad, so EV's have the potential to make vehicles less "throw away" than they currently are, with a longer lasting life span.
So great to see these cars and their tech get a new life 👍 All the best, Per (Per)
Those clips in the trunk are slick!
That is a nice setup. Just got one and will need to pay it off before I take the battery out and put it in the house and put a bigger one in.
This work is great. Very skilled person.
great video and upgrades! plan to buy used leaf in near future so wish me luck :D
Good luck! :D
OK, I've watched a few of your videos and I like them very much. Just enough humor to keep them flowing while giving real information. Subscribed.
So my next question, how much to fly you to California and help me build a hot Leaf 🙂
Seriously impressive 👍
I love that you said boot and not trunk! 👍
Can’t wait to see Car Wizard do this swap as well.
Great job how much did the new battery cost?
what range do you get on highway
Thank you very much for this video! Great what you are doing!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Impressive range.
Nissan leaf 2011 with 100,000 milea on odo 30to40 miles of range.
How much should should be the value in US?
It's wonderful. I am a leaf owner from China and I am very interested in your design.
I actually have a Chinese customer already, that took the battery from a Nissan Sylphy and put it into a Leaf!
@@DalasEVRepair I have chatted with your customer in the WeChat group yesterday, and watched his successful installation video. I just sent you an email.
I juat love that Finnish accent :D btw, will you be cooperating with muxsan for other upgrades? Such as CCS?
Thanks, that's the plan yes!
Thanks Daniel for your awesome work. I have 2 imported Nissan Leafs in Australia and I am on the look out for larger battery packs. Not common here in Australia. Have you seen the Company retro fitting after market lithium packs that brings it up to around 63kw ? Spanish I think. Great job they do. I will follow you work closely thanks.
Yes, I actually helped with making the instrumentation work on the spanish 64kW pack! Good luck with finding a bigger pack!
Yep I’m on the hunt for the large pack here in Australia, even though I’m getting 19.5kwh out of my current packI feel the 40 pack will transform the cars reach without worry. I have had thoughts of doing something similar to muxsan in the boot. However not sure on regulations. Dream is the 62kwh pack :). I’ve had thoughts of importing a wreck from Japan, but it looks expensive. Finding a crashed 40kwh here in Australia will be rare as. I think an actual removed pack from Japan and shipped might the the go.
Thanks for the video which is really useful. I've just bought a 40kw battery to replace the 24kw battery that has now done 100k miles and still at 11bars. I am happy to physically swap the battery, but know nothing about the electronics that are required. If you have any information about the can bus specification or are able to sell me something that will do the job, I'd be very interested.
Ofcourse I can sell you the requred hardware. Shoot me an email to info@dalasevrepair.fi
I'm also planing to upgrade my nissan leaf 2014 into 40kwh.
This is what everyone wants to know!
I was looking into the OVMS for our e-nv200 40 kWh but the OVMS manual says it's not yet compatible with the 40 kWh models. But it works with your car? Is it because your car is an older car, only the battery is newer..?
The 40kWh e-nv200 removed some pins from the OBD2 connector (EV-CAN). That is why it is not possible to start heating remotely on the 40kWh model. OVMS otherwise would work on your car, it's just the remote heating/cooling that wont work.
Whats the point without thermal management? Never ending circle
I have a 2016 and swapped out the 30 kwh for a 40 kwh. All under warranty. So far so good. Would like to get the muxsan product for more Kwh.
Yes, Nissan ran out of 30kWh packs, and more importantly, it is cheaper for them to produce 40kWh packs, so all 2016+ 30kWh Leafs automatically get the 40kWh pack in warranty situations. Those below 2016 are shafted.
@@DalasEVRepair i have a 2013 leaf what can i do exactly?
@@DalasEVRepair Shafted. That is exactly how I feel with the way Nissan has responded to this issue
Sub'd for "helping others" @4:35 thanks for helping make the world a better place!
Thanks for the sub! 😊
Nice video Daniel. I have a 2013 24kWhr Leaf which is sitting at around 62% SOH. The cells are all still fairly well balanced, but fully charge only goes to 88%. I'm not sure why that is, but range is sitting at around 80km.
My issue is that I am living in S Africa. Nissan marketed the car here in a very half hearted manner and so only around 100 were ever sold country wide. So finding a second hand Leaf battery is pretty much impossible.
Nissan is even more hopeless here than elsewhere in the world, so no help there.
Do you have any suggestions on how I could upgrade?
Could I build a pack from battery Li ion packs on the market? Or ship a second hand battery from Europe or US?
I think shipping one from EU is the best option. But you'll need contacts for sure, locating a pack is not easy. And transportation will most likely be between 500-1000€!
I'm interested to know if those lower grill covers do decrease drag coefficient as some grills in newer vehicles are often to reduce drag coefficient.

Hi Dala!
I have a 2013 leaf with 3 battery bars. Can i replace it with a 40kwh hour battery and can i fit a cooling system for the battery. Please help
Yes you can replace it with a 40kWh pack. See this page for more info on dalasevrepair.fi/can-bridges/
Also here is my take on the cooling: ruclips.net/video/ensZ33hhNB8/видео.html
Prices?
Do you know sven and ole?
Hi! Thank you for showing us this and providing a solution for us to DIY it on our own. I have a question about this 80% limit that one can enable in the menu, does this still work after a swap with a 40kWh battery? :)
My BatterySaver feature gives more tunability when it comes to the end charge %, i can set it at 50/57/63/75/83/92/100%!
@@DalasEVRepair Neat, kiitos.
Do you have a video on how you installed the Android head unit if so could someone reply with a link to it
Thank you
I followed this guide: www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=26210
That’s what I’m talking about :) my 24kwh battery is healthy so no need yet , but great to see this option and that people have now done the 62kwh swap also. 62 kWh will turn an old leaf into a true all round EV :) One thing I have to say that I like with 2018 leaf is one pedal driving! I hate the touchy breaks and prefer that precise control that one pedal brings. Question I looked at open VMS and couldn’t work out how to have leafspy and OVMS at same time. How did you get around this? Also can u turn on AC remotely when not charging ? What head unit did u get? I want to run leafspy like u as I have S model . Cheers
Y-splitter cable for OBD2 port! And yes, remotely able to turn on AC. Headunit is 'Atoto A6 Pro'
Thank you , the remote AC is what I’m after while not plugged in! Y splitter is off the shelf?
Hi, the link to the android head unit is not showing up in eBay
Just search for 'Atoto A6'
Daniel, are you able to change LEAF settings like timer and climate settings in that Android head unit?
Nope! This is a base model with dedicated buttons for that!
@@DalasEVRepair Cool! The simpler is the better!
You mentioned that you can start *and stop* charging with your OVMS, is this correct? If that's the case how did you manage to get stopping the charge to work?
Stop charge is in a feature branch of OVMS, available here: github.com/openvehicles/Open-Vehicle-Monitoring-System-3/issues/287
It will soon be merged to the main branch!
Ah right, I remember that issue. Had given up hope that it would ever make it to main
@@DalasEVRepair Yeah I have my beta running fine for a few months. Just need to sit some more and clean it up.
Do you have any other direct form or blog for me to check this from beginning. Still I cannot find proper solution to upgrade.. Happy to see your work thanks.

Will it available to download?
Nimz 2004 it’s OVMS. But you need to have the module installed in the car first.
Cost wise, would you have been better off just buying a newer generation 40 kWh LEAF? Great learning experience anyway but I wonder about the economic feasibility of the battery upgrade route. Makes great content. Well done.
No, back in 2019 when I did the upgrade, the cheapest 40kWh leaf was 33k€. The battery only cost 5k€
Hello dala,I want to know how can I buy brand-new Nissan leaf battery from china ? Address?
No clue
Hi Dala, how I must register the ovms in my leaf from 2011 ?
Any hints therefore? Many thanks 😉👍
I recommend reading the official guide a few times! docs.openvehicles.com/en/latest/introduction.html
@@DalasEVRepair Thanks a lot…👍
How do you run leafspy with android auto?
You don't, this headunit is a full android system, so it can run normal android apps OR android auto via your phone. A bit confusing :D
you say that the battery is from a -18 leaf, what years of leafs battery are considered working with a -15? is it Leaf 2019 and/or 2020 as well ?
All 40kWh packs (2018-2020) are direct bolt on. The 62kWh pack requires spacers since it is 50mm taller.

Hi where you tbink i can get a battery upgrade? Am frm. Ireland
Check out this map for closest company nissanleafbatteryreplacement.com/
How much did it cost you to put new 30 kw battries
A fortune $7,500.
You seem to be wise man with hands growing from a right place ;). This brings my question, is it okay for you to charge battery over 80%? The reason I'm asking is I was charging 5%-95% and got 6% SOH loss in 12 month. Last 6 month I charge 5% to 80% and have battery 0,25% degradation. Now I tend to charge even 70-75% sometimes.
Yes! Limiting the max charge will prevent degradation, but with LEAF batteries it is more important to keep the temperature down. But you can't control the climate you live in, but the chargemax% you can :)
How to do can bus communication for 40kwh?
If you need a CAN-bridge with BatteryUpgrade software: dalasevrepair.fi/can-bridges/
was thinking of getting a nissan leaf. I only live 2 miles from work. That's all I need it for. how many bars until the car can't go 5 miles?
Only driving 5miles should be doable with extremely degraded battery. I would say that every LEAF in the world would be able to do it 😂
@@DalasEVRepair cool I'll be buying one next month then. how many bars do you think I should aim for? like atleast 7? 8?
@@smokestrong1000 More bars is always better, (and will probably last longer), but for 5miles I would just take the cheapest.
Just walk!
I have a 2011 Nissan Leaf with the original battery. I took great care of the battery thinking that’s the right thing to do, but this is one those thing where doing the right thing is the wrong thing as I couldn’t not get the new battery replacement when it was still under warranty. Now it’s out of warranty and it only can last about 30miles on a full charge. I am thinking about donating this car as nobody wants to buy this car but it’s too expensive to replace with a new battery. Finding out that I can replace it with 40kw gives me hope. Is it expensive to do?
Depending on your location, a 40kWh upgrade can cost 3500->10000€.
@@xabizar Nope, sry!
@@DalasEVRepair Hi Daniel,
Which location is cheap/expensive.
I am from Denmark.
I have one of the last build 24 kWh 6/2015. Still got all 12 bars and no notable degradation after 70kkm.
My wife simply loves this car but the range is a bit on the low side for where we live. I had planned to replace it. But if I can get 40 kWh for under 5k€ I would consider that instead.
@@renebergqvist599 Import from Norway! Def cheapest option. But supply is sporadic, so you'll have to poll constantly!
@@DalasEVRepair It's about 10000€ (NZ$18000) here in New Zealand. At that price you might as well get the IONIQ when the prices come down, as that have water cooling for the batteries.
Any website where find leaf crashed?
I buy mine from Norway. But shipping to ?Spain? would be insanely high, so look for something local/closer!
How much did you pay for the new battery?
4200€ for the 40kWh pack!
Nice video. Hope i can do this in Norway, with my 1 gen Nissan Leaf. What price for a 40kw battery? 😄
Pay no more than 4000€!

Can you provide the make and model you installed in yours? The head unit link is broken.
I've tried pasting "FATOTO A6 Pro doppio din per auto Car Audio A6Y2721PRB G Operazione gestuale" into eBay's search, and the results are ambiguous to me today. (Though I can compare it with a stock Leaf EntertaiNav unit and see some of the ways in which they are different.)
Thanks for the info about getting a CAN unit to make a 40kWh battery work. My 2011 got a 2015 battery replacement under warranty, so there may be a Nissan-supplied adapter already installed. When I get closer to swapping my 24kWh battery with a 40kWh, we'll see; for now, I have 11 bars.
Also thanks for all your technical discussion; it's informative and helpful!
A6Y2721PRB-G is the model, other models will also work.
@@DalasEVRepair Brilliant, thank you!
Do you have a favourite resource for technical considerations when replacing it? (e.g., DO unplug the 12V battery first. DON'T forget to use *this* pinout map.) I'd never used GitHub until following your links, but it seems like a good place to start.

@@DalasEVRepair Outstanding. Thank you!
I will have an opportunity to buy a 2020 Leaf with its 62kWh pack this week. The car has under 500 miles on it!
Can I retrofit this into my 2011 with your CAN bridge, wiring harness adapter, and some 1.5" square steel bars?
Or is the 62kWh pack wholly incompatible with the 2011 ZE0?
@@stevejordan7275 Yes it can be retrofitted, but the mechanical side needs quite some engineering. Spacers, skid plate in the front (to prevent anything from hitting it) along with stronger rear springs from the 62kWh LEAF is needed.
How much was the upgrade?
4k€ back in 2019. Now prices are at 6.5k€
This begs the question though...are you going to eventually upgrade to the 62 kwh battery? :P
Absolutely!
@ki0ng between 8-13k€
@@DalasEVRepair It's a deeper case, you'll need to modify the chassis too. Will be fun :)
Wouldn't that at least require a suspension upgrade? The 62kWH pack actually fits but is about an inch taller in height, so it decreases the ground clearance under the Leaf. The slightly decreased ground clearance is not that big a deal, but the increased weight IS a problem. This is because the increased weight makes the car ride lower, and with the lower ride height and that inch of lost ground clearance under the new battery, you can occasionally bottom out (such as when going over a speed bump). Violently scraping a giant battery against concrete or asphalt could damage it or break connections loose. You could suddenly find the car undriveable.
👏👏👏👏👏🤗
This is truly amazing! Have you done any video about the swap to a 40kwh battery?
i have a 2014 leaf, with a great battery at this point, but somewhere in the future I see that there will be time for a new battery. if a 40kwh is possible that would be awesome!
How much did you pay for the 40kwh battery? what would the howl thing cost, with battery and work if you did it?
I have lots of pictures here (www.japtoys.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3613&start=60#p71473), might do a video on next install.
Prices fluctuate, but in the 5-7k€ range depending on from where you get the battery!
Hi Dala. My battery is 50% degraded. And I think replacing it would be more environmentally friendly than throwing away the car. Nissan quoted me for 9k for a new 24kwh pack which I think is not economical. One question I have is what equipment would I need to replace the battery given that is so heavy. I guess you need a car lift or do you think it can be done with manual jacks?
@@PedroLarroy I always do it with manual jacks. I have some pictures here: www.japtoys.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3613 I have since then upgraded to a metal frame instead of a wooden!

Check my website!
the 9999.9 makes me nervous... 😉
I actually used the trip meter to track km's traveled with the new 40kWh battery! Shame that it capped at 9999.9km :D
40kWh???
