I've played Maggot Brain many times, I've seen Michael play it with P-Funk many more times---this is the only time I ever heard him play it note for note. It's no wonder George gave him the gig on the spot when he was a teenager. It was one of the highlights of my career, and my life for that matter. I was proud to be the anchor on this, prouder than you will ever know.
mickey melchiondo Greatest solo in rock history. I've seen it many many times as well, my friend. You do proper justice to this mighty classic. Thank you, Dean.
Holy crap I just realized I had commented on this exact video 5 years ago as a Funkadelic fan not even knowing who this Melchiondo guy is, and now miraculously found my way back to this video after discovering Ween over the last couple months ... Music just goes full circle sometimes.
mickey melchiondo It an annoyed the shit out of me too. I listen to this a couple times a month after having it on repeat for 2 days straight when you put it up and I think the dislike guy had the shakes or Parkinson's. Just in case fuck em.
I have been watching Mike play this for the last 40 years. I got him high in ‘79 before he did this at the Apollo theatre in New York (fuck I’m old!) . I always thought that the rhythm guitar is always so important to sound and feel of this classic. You held it down bro…respect!
I didn't read anything in the comments or description till after I listened, and about 2 minutes in I realized what I was hearing. Note for note. RIP Eddie. Amazing. Thank you for this, Michael and Mickey.
many quiet nights in Ohio spent stopping the car, pulling over at midnight when our radio station played this to sit and absorb it with reverence in the cool night air
This is so beautiful. It sounds like your whole life flashing before your eyes while you're tripping, and thinking about all the things that ever were, are now, and ever could be. I wish I could play guitar like that
There's no song that I've watched more different live versions of than Maggot Brain. And this one right here is gold ... Play on, children, play on ...
First time I heard of Eddie Hazel was when a friend in high school (he had dropped out) that played guitar all day played “A Tear for Eddie’ for me while telling me about Eddie Hazel. Then he played me Maggot Brain. Eddie Hazel is my favorite guitarist and Michael Hampton is right up there with him. If you can see P-Funk while George is still touring, do it. The Kidd is back with him too. As it should be
Mike played Maggot Brain 4” from my face at the Sayreville Theatre Feb twenty something of 2004. Low stage. Mike and Muruga (wearing a ski jacket) and Corey Glover from Living Colour were sitting in with Gov’t Mule that cold night in NJ. I get why Mickey loves him so - he is a fucking monster player
