      No :( right now I'm on a Canon rebel on my way to get some flashes before anything else. I've been considering to go your way or going with the Sony mirrorles for their versatility, might first go with the Sony and then with the Mamiya. Though Julio, haven't the different crop factors affected the lenses you use for the Mamiya? i'd guess you use the 110 2.8... on my canon i've got a 50 1.2 and an 85 1.4 and i'm almost always hitting a wall because they're too tele on a crop.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад

      Alexis Marchesini yes but even a crop of a 6x7 cm is like 28% bigger than 35mm full frame. On the retouching video I did before I left a link to a RAW file download. Just what I got out of the IQ140. Actually using the 180mm so cropping even more.

    hello :) I have been photographing for a few years and I was thinking about buying a medium format camera. Something kept stopping me! 35mm film is a super universal camera, but I feel that something is missing! and you showed me the answer with this movie. I also meet with all this, and now I know that I will try with medium format. Thank you and best regards.

    Besides a Mamiya RZ67 pro II I own a Mamiy 645 Super and a Hasselblad 500cm.
    When it comes to get best precision I take the RZ67pro II. The focus screen is better than as on Hasselblad with Acute Matte.
    After several years of usage I had two problems. First the shutter release button was defect and second the fine focusing didn't work properly due to an seized gear.
    Fortunately both issues could be fixed for little money.
    I like my Mamiya!

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад +1

      Odu Kar oh that's true. Once I saw an RZ with the knob bent, seems like it felt on its side and the bottom gear had a teeth bent also so sometimes it would get stuck but just like one time every 1500 frames. Easy fix tho. This cameras have lots of parts available in any camera repair shop since they where heavily used on the 80s and 90s. Never the less an excellent system that deserves all the love lol

    I'm getting mine tomorrow (the customs office had system failure, so couldn't get it today)... and I'm super excited about it.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад +1

      Norbert Palša ohhh snap!!! So exiting! Is it the basic kit with the 110mm or the 90mm lens?

    •  7 лет назад

      Actually just the body with a waist level viewfinder and film back - I have bought the 140mm macro few days ago, but in the future, I'm absolutely going to buy 65mm L-A, 110mm and maybe 250mm (or something else? who knows)... but I really wanted to get the 65 and 140 first and because I'd like to improve in portrait work I chose the 140 as I have been shooting pretty much standard lens all the time and I have my 50mm on a Nikon F100... and the 65mm would be for landscapes as my main course has been landscape and nature photography for some time now.

      I shot film in the 70's and 80's, life changed and stopped taking photos. Grandchildren in 2008 opened up my life back into photography and had to learn digital. Just purchased a Mamiya RZ67 Proii last month and getting back into film. You do are very good at expressing how you shoot. You do not talk too much. You do a good job without editing. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks.

    Many of the folks who initially loved the RZ, had fatal failures of the camera and now have gone to RB's. They weigh exactly the same but the RB is completely mechanical. Use pro sd backs and get reliability from light leaks. KL glass is newer and fantastic. Drop in a RickOleson focusing screen with split prism and the camera is a dream.

      Rob Johnston it shouldn't be hard. I know they are very long but the video manual series I did explains in extreme detail every part of it. I have got comments from many people that they use the camera like they have had it for years after just getting it. The curve would be in actually adjusting your pace to the medium format way.

      When I went to pick my RZ up, I was chatting with the lady who was selling it, and handling the camera, checking it out, pulled the dark slide and slipped it in the slot on the film back......... "Oh My God! What did you do! How did you know to do that? I have nearly lost that thing so many times, putting it down and forgetting where it was, I never knew you could do that!" Hmmm, RTFM?

      thx... I was born in 1994 and by the time I picked up photography seriously (around 2012), digital cameras have taken over the film share and never have I shot a picture with film camera... recently I really fell in love with large formats because of the extra detail and the view without wide angle distortion and of course the thin depth of field...... will be following your content and Instagram as well!

      By the way, is it still possible to get a Polaroid film holder back (attached to film camera back) today?

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад

      +Steven Yang they have just discontinued the last instant film that could also be used on the RZ. You can probably still find some. It was the FP-100c you probably can still find some people with the last stock. The RZ does have an adapter for Polaroid. I have a couple of videos using it.
      My photography started with a 35mm film camera the N55 by Nikon. I shoot everything on Automatic (on the green zone) and always hopping for the best when developing. It wasn't until I went digital that I started to get creative. And once I felt confident enough I jumped back to Film with Medium Format. Don't feel bad if you didn't started photography with film. Nothing has changed and you can still play with most of the stuff the old photographers play with. Let me know when you get your RZ!!

      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад +1

      Lonnie Farrare there is always eBay. The way I made the jump to my first digital back was to sale every Nikon gear I had. And since then the RZ is my only camera.

      +Lonnie Farrare I know it's scary for months I didn't know if I made the right decision but now I am happy I took the medium format path, this camera has definitely helped on not just my photography but in my business as well. So if you want my advice, if you can afford it economically by selling some of your current gear go for it, maybe that's also what is pulling you back. Once you see those files you will be happy you made the jump!

    Honest advice, made me buy the whole system. Based on your recommendation I bought all the lenses ever made for the system. Iam enjoying the versatility with all the film formats as well. The apo lenses are perfect, as is the 50 uld, 65 la, 75 both sb and normal. Currently getting specialized in repair of these camera types. Bought a pro II for 27 euro broken, turned out the guy did not know how it worked. Do have two proII's and a proIId. Thanks And keep up the good work.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  6 лет назад

      Otto Muskee Wow that’s like a dream for me, all the lenses and models. Did you got all the accessories too? Different ground glasses and view finders and backs?

    • @ottomuskee6203
      @ottomuskee6203 6 лет назад +1

      Hi Julio, yes I simply bought everything. It took me half a year, most of it from europe and Japan. Have all the backs, aside from 220 models due to availability of film. All masks, windersII, shift and tilt, incl the lenses, 27 other lenses, tubes, finders, grips, etc. But I must say your focus system seems perfect to me, the cds chimney viewfinder is a disaster to my opinion, the loupe is not stable enough. I would like to have your solution machined, probably will do it myself. The only thing that is missing is time to get out there and put it to work more. Enjoy your walk of life and your pleasant way of vlogging, keep it up and success in Japan!

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  6 лет назад

      Otto Muskee whaaaaaat you got everything! Amazing! Even the tilt shift! How much do you think everything was? Let me try to look for a 3D rendering of when I made the viewfinder so you get an idea. I described it to my machinist friend.

    • @ottomuskee6203
      @ottomuskee6203 6 лет назад

      All I need now is a good digital back, I am considering to sell my hasselblad h3dII because I enjoy the handling of the Mamiya more and the lens quality is the same with the majority of lenses based on my requirements. All together I spend around 15K euro, but I need to spend another 10 for the right 80mp back. You seem the be very good with electronics, my specialty lies more in machining. Critical focussing is my challenge, therefore I need a better system like yours. Thanks if you cold send me something to work with.

      For the RB The price difference isn't that much to the RZ and if you would ever think in getting a digital back, definitively the RZ67 Pro II is your best option with the fine focus knob and the half step speed settings.

  • @ropersix
    @ropersix 7 лет назад

    Regarding the human connection using a waist level finder, I've definitely noticed the same thing when shooting video and using a flip-out LCD at waist level. I often do both video and stills, and there is a huge difference when I get my DSLR out an point it at their face. I do use a Lumix G7 for video, which is also tiny, so maybe that's part of it as well. But even shooting video with a 5DII in the past, with it away from my face so I can see the LCD, I noticed a big difference from when using it for stills. It's not something to be underestimated. It makes a big, big difference in some situations at least.

    I'm seriously thinking of selling all my Canon gear and going digital medium format with the rz67. However will this hold up in a commercial environment where shooting many photographs for fashion in terms of speed ability to review images quickly etc. It's scary to sell up and go all in.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад +3

      Hi thanks for the comment, I would not recommend the RZ67 for weddings, photojournalism, events or sports but this camera was made for well planned portraits, studio stuff, it was one of the most famous to use along with the Hasselblad cameras, and now having the option to go digital with them with great CCD sensors you have nothing to worry, tethered capture allow you to review the images on iPhone or iPad wireless among everyone, this is the best image quality you can get. Shooting fashion and medium format has been married since many years. Markus Klinko uses an RZ, Annie Leivobitz also uses an RZ, Mert and Markus uses an old Hasselblad with a digital back, Mario Testino uses modern Hasselblad but at the end of the day everyone uses same Phase One Capture One software for their workflow, of course there is many others that shoot with Nikon and Canon still, but the big fashion shooters have been using this systems for many years. I have took this route and will never go back to a DSLR.
      Check this RZ33 commercial, I hope it makes your eyes sparkle.

    I sometimes use a remote because I found that as soon as I go behind the camera, they get tense. When I move away, they relax, even though I am still shooting, I am talking and looking at them. I periodically look, lock focus, but I can look at them and explain where to move a bit. So I get human connection. Going to medium format really slowed me down as well, my shots are more thought out now

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад

      Michael Bradley it's part of what makes it more special right? My framing is pretty close to the edges so if they move 15 cm they might be in a bad composition so I had to keep an eye on the ground glass or viewfinder. I'm happy to hear that I'm not alone with the connection subject, never hear anyone talk about it so I thought it was just my crazy idea.

    • @portblock
      @portblock 7 лет назад +1

      Julio Ryuuzaki the connection factor I find most prevalent with newer models. But yes it is a thing. I think we don't really hear about it due to few medium format shooters vs DSLR shooters who only know through the lens. I noticed it when I do Beauty, as I moved toward the camera I saw tensing up. Oh the MF look, I also attribute it to larger FOV for same distance/lens mm, thus a DSLR can never achieve it.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад

      Michael Bradley It's strange but holding a DSLR for me is like holding kryptonite, not kidding. Sounds bad and cameras shouldn't matter but seriously I feel so drained.

    • @portblock
      @portblock 7 лет назад +1

      Julio Ryuuzaki oh I get it, I shoot DSLR only 20% of the time, I shoot dual DSLR/MF, when I shoot runway, the DSLR (D810) for the walk, and the MF (PhaseOne) for end of runway shot. DSLR for events and red carpets, like you said, need to shoot quick, it's a run and gun. I don't shoot DSLR in the (last 2 year) in the studio. I picked up a mamiya 645 for my assistant to slow her down and think about what she is shooting. Quick question, on your system, is the power winder needed? I've been thinking about an RZ for a while

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад +1

      +Michael Bradley not needed you can crank the side lever, feels nice, like loading a gun (although I've never handled a big gun) but it could get in the way of cables. So the winder helps with that and to pace the shoot. Also it makes a super sexy sound.
      But when I do outdoor shoots and I am going hand held for long time I take the winder off.

    What do you think about the price gouging going on with these things at the moment? Have you seen prices on eBay lately? The adapters are going for 3k alone now. It's crazy. Not afforfable anymore. I saw a whole RZ kit with an IQ160 going for 17k euro today. I couldn't believe. I hope no one buys it so the prices come down to something fair and reasonable again. I'm glad I bought mine back in 2016 at an amazing price.

    Hi Julio, thank you so much for the video. Your love for the camera really shows.
    I'm seriously thinking about getting an RZ too. However, something worries me: I shoot a lot of architecture, and some product shots. and the RZ doesn't much have tilt-shift options (I'm aware of the 75mm shift lens -- won't be wide enough for me).
    Do you propose a way to somehow get around this limitation?
    Thanks!

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  7 лет назад

      Hi Zhixi! Thank you for the kind words and your question. Mamiya has a Tilt Shift Adapter for the RZ67
      www.bhphotovideo.com/images/images1000x1000/mamiya_tilt_shift_adapter_for_rz67_801261909.jpg
      This will allow you to use it with any RZ lens. I have always wanted to try one but I don't shoot architecture or food. But if that is your goal definitively this is a MUST for your setup. I hope this info helps you feel more comfortable in getting your new baby.

      Thanks! Well, a few things really; first, for me here in the UK it seems the RZ Pro II is about twice the price(even though my RB's coming from Japan); also I got it for film shooting (and lab TIFF scans right now) and I like "all manual"; I'd also read that they're easier to fix perhaps compared with if something big goes wrong electrically with the RZ. It's still possible to put a digital back on the RB, too. However, I do really like the idea of the RZ body now too, so I think when I can afford in future I will get a Pro II body too. Really can't beat that versatility it seems! :)

    Hi Julio, I'm new to the Mamiya cameras and was wondering if the lens mounts on the Sekor Z and Sekor C are the same? Thanks

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  6 лет назад +1

      Corey S. Vaughn thanks for the question. Not really. In fact not even all Sekor C lenses have the same mount or are made for the same camera, there are Sekor C lenses for the 645 and Sekor C lenses for the rB67 which are two completely different cameras and mounts. Now Sekor Z lenses are designed for the rZ67, in short confirm compatibility with the seller before making a purchase.

    Hi Julio! Again thank you for sharing your knowledge...I am thinking buying the The Leaf Aptus 65S , any advise? I have Mamiya RZ67. Also Fuji just came out their new GFX 50s medium format, do you have any thought on that? :) Love to hear back from you. Thank you :)

      Tuan Nguyen hi Tuan thank you for the message. Definitively a Digital back would give you another feel of your images. For the 65s, it is a very old version, yeah the S might be for speed but it was made in 2006 before even the first iPhone was made. So you know what you can expect out of that 28 Mpx on that technology time. The screen was hard to see outdoors, and it's very slow compared to new DSLR.
      For the GFX 50s I'm not really into it. I'm concern about the compatibility and how well it would be supported with good lenses and software. But the thing I can't stand out of the 50mpx backs is that they use a CMOS sensor. And that gives you the same grain and noise of a Nikon or Canon. The CCD sensors of the most medium format digital backs give you a higher dynamic range so that just seals it. Is just a lot of pixels but is missing the smooth tonal graduation. And then the price for the lenses and all. Besides the sensor is inside the camera so there is no upgrading or changing, can't do film / Polaroid or upgrade backs. I'm not into that. And mirrorless, I don't give 2 cents about it, how many amazing work has been done with cameras with mirrors like Hasselblad and Phase One or Mamiya. A mirror has never been an issue. CMOS sensor gives you good low light exposures at higher ISO but the quality drops a lot.
      Hope it helps.

      Tuan Nguyen Tuan Nguyen yeah the 65s is thaaat old, when you think about the iPhone was non existent on that time does hit you hard. But still the image quality overpasses any 2016 new Nikon or canons.
      I don't really have many digital backs but I have used 6 digital backs so far with the RZ67, the only one I haven't used is the Credo.
      My favorite is by far the IQ100 series.

      Julio Ryuuzaki I don't give a fig for mirror/mirrorless, but the EVF is wonderful. I set the exposure by looking at the shadows. If there's detail there I can get it later. And the information on the screen!

    Hi Julio, I know I am asking a lot, but something that would be helpful if you could give your comments on the 6 backs you have used. I personally already shoot medium format but I want to put together a small dedicated 4x5 system with back for headshots. And I see sone of these backs for $2,000 and I dont have experience with them.

      Steven Yang hi Steven, I haven’t done a review on it but is the carryon pelican case 1510. I think there is a new version now. But this is still working perfectly for many years and haven’t need to replace it.

    How come soooooooo many people think the sync speed has anything to do with freezing subjects? if you wanna freeze a subject get a flash with really short duration. If you're shooting in the studio 1/30 will suffice.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  6 лет назад

      vito mirr depending on the aperture or course. 1/30 at iso 100 with a few 500 watts modeling lights is enough to appear in your photograph.

    • @FlashbackArrest
      @FlashbackArrest 6 лет назад

      Hey Julio, thanks for replying. But the flashes in the studio I work are set up so that the modelling lamp goes off for like half a second after being triggered. In this case, the only situation I see synch speed might be an issue with freezing a subject is in mixed light conditions. Say shooting a person jumping in broad daylight and mixing available light and flash in the exposure. Would you agree?

    • @RyuuzakiJulio
      @RyuuzakiJulio  6 лет назад

      If you are in a studio with flashes, there is absolutely no need to be shooting at 1/30 of a second. Go for your max sync speed your camera can give you. Some do 1/125 some 1/250 mine does 1/400 because of the leaf shutters on the lens. What really freezes the subject is the actual shutter speed, the thing is, if you are trying to freeze something that moves really fast, like a balloon poop, a bullet or some splash photography, even the 1/250 of a normal DSLR wouldnt be enough to freeze since the movement would travel in the frame faster than that speed. Lets say a bullet, they travel (on small arms) anything from 3000 m/s to 5000 m/s, if you are shooting a few feet away, the 1/250 of 1 second, on that time the bullet would have traveled already 16 meters, so you wont be able to freeze it, then like you said, yes you do need a flash with a short duration. Yet again the way the sensors work, they introduce noise the longer they are recording, so is best to sync at the max speed to have a clearer image (but that's another story). So in a big way you are completely right. In other way maybe a little exaggerated with the example i feel.

    • @FlashbackArrest
      @FlashbackArrest 6 лет назад

      Julio don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but I think you are confusing shutter speed and flash duration like many people do. Let me quote you and explain:
      "If you are in a studio with flashes, there is absolutely no need to be shooting at 1/30 of a second. Go for your max sync speed your camera can give you."
      I know its pushing it, but If you're shooting with a pentax 67, that's exactly the max speed. So not 100% unrealistic.
      "What really freezes the subject is the actual shutter speed..."
      In a studio setting this is simply not true. The shutter is open for 1/250 of a second. During this time the flash fires. If you are lucky and happen to be shooting with elinchrom quadra s heads, for example, this would roughly be 1/2800th of a second. P.c. Buff's Einstein E640 offer a flash duration of 1/13000 of a second. So in the case of elinchrom, out of the 0.004 second of exposure, you will have 0.0036428571 of absolute darkness that DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL IMAGE. Hence a large portion of the overall shutter speed (much more than half) is only there to account for slow ass curtains that might get in the way. And will have nothing to do with resulting image blur, if there is any.
      "the thing is, if you are trying to freeze something that moves really fast, like a balloon poop, a bullet or some splash photography, even the 1/250 of a normal DSLR wouldnt be enough to freeze since the movement would travel in the frame faster than that speed."
      Of course it wouldn't IF YOU WERE USING CONSTANT LIGHT. During that 250th of a second window you can fire a 1/13000 P.C. Buff head to freeze pretty much anything. This is the only contributor to exposure during studio photography.
      There is one more factor to consider. These numbers are all usually in t=0.5 of flash duration. It gets more complicated when you consider flash falloff. Talking about that here is like whipping out electron microscope when discussing chihuahuas.

    • @RyuuzakiJulio

      No no, I got my mustang in 2001, it was used, the model was 1995 because I wanted the sideways taillights of the 94-95 instead of the blocky ones from the 96-98, and the 99-00 just came out so they where too expensive for me at that time. To be honest I was a bit disappointed because my goal was to get my car by the year 2000, you know, start a new millennium with my dream car, but the whole year passed and I couldn’t save enough money for it.
