The Trees because of the change in time signatures. 5/4 time almost unheard of in rock. "Something for Nothing" . M y favorite from 2112. Also request "Cinderella Man". Very underrated tune. Thanks Guys, Son of Cygnus
Always enjoy your videos. I look forward to every one of them. “I will choose a path that’s clear, I will choose Freewill.” Love that line. I also love, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”
As someone who's heard Freewill over 100 times, I'm starting to think the instrumental passage is TOO good... so good that people can't grasp how good it is. Each instrument by itself is already an overload. So it takes many listens to fully appreciate it all. I still get psyched by it.

Getty Lee vocals are mesmerizing and to realize only 3 guys make that music it's breathtaking. Proud to be Canadian and to have been listening to Rush since their beginning.
If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice. My favourite Rush lyric. I saw them once with The Tragically Hip. Have you heard of this legendary Canadian band...if you choose not to answer you still have made a choice.
I can see Alex just going nuts every time Geddy does one of those insanely fast bass bits during the mid-breakdown. Same as what happened on Subdivisions. As a bass player myself, that's the kinda thing that gets me pumped too.
I've seen Rush live 14 times.....EVERY single time, when the show was over, my face hurt from smiling so much! My wife didn't know of them or like them when I took her to her first show, and she loved it, said it was the best concert she'd ever seen.
Neil Peart is not only the best drummer in the world, he is extremely smart, deep and a very talented lyricist. Very poetic indeed and wrote all of Rush's symbolic lyrics.
This is one of those songs that will grow on you.... as catchy and as popular as it is. Listening to it with the volume turned up i still find my self engrossed with it. Particulary the middle part with the instrumental and geddy's bass in the background driving away and Alex leading the charge with that solo. Then coming out of it is pure bliss going into the line 'Each of Us, A Cell of Awareness'.
There are "lessons" in the "listens". Alex said "... after 100 lessons" and then corrected himself. The lyrics mean way more to me as an old guy with old guy knowledge. Thank you for your channel!
Nice - yeah, the more I listen to the solo break, after 40 years, I'm still hearing new things. IMHO, that 30 secs is one of the best examples of the Hard Rock genre in human existence. All 3 guys are just absolutely killing it. Alex's solo is out-of-this-world marvelous, Geddy's shredding the bass and Neil is being Neil - incredible fusion of 3 musical talents. During the live shows, this was the "we're not worthy" moment of the show with arms raised bowing.
could not agree with you guys more!!!!!! that instrumental section seen live is absolutely unbelievable to witness!!!!! As it progresses, you're smacked up-side the head with a, OH MY GOD!!!!!!........what the hell am I seeing and hearing?!?!?!?!.....surreal!!!!!!!!
And awesome enough very few people can believe that the drummer wrote the lyrics and got his ideas from many philosophers it’s just an amazing thing great video I’m glad y’all enjoyed it
I hope everyone was using a good pair of head phones while listening to this! The way the sounds travels in and around inside your head is just spectacular! Wow!!!!! Thank you, Andy & Alex!!!! You guys are THE BEST!
One of the many things I love about this song is that unless you're paying attention, you don't notice that the time signature changes almost every measure. It's bizarre that something so unnatural can be so natural. Same with Jacob's Ladder.
Great song! Another great Canadian power trio to check out is Triumph. Listen to Hold On, Never Surrender, Fight The Good Fight, Magic Power, Lay It on The Line...all great Triumph songs...
I would highly recommend watching the Rush documentary ‘Beyond the Lighted Stage’. Provides a lot of insight into the lyricism and how that and the musicianship transitioned over the years. Just as a watch, not necessarily a reaction, lol. Great reaction y’all!
Great movie!!!!!....btw, just saw Cinema Strangiato a month back in the theatre..........WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great sound and footage!!!!!!!!!! So easy to see how amazing and what a special band they were!!!!!!!!!!....truly one of a kind!
You gotta hear Limelight, Witch Hunt, YYZ, and a million other songs! You should listen to the entire Power Windows album too. Heck, listen to all of the albums, they're all great.
The guitar work on this tune during the pre-chorus (when Geddy is singing "A planet of play things...") gives me goosebumps almost every time I hear it.
Just a peak inside the mind of Neil Peart...one of the most well read musicians around, his personal novels/writing is just as intense when speaking about his love of motorbikes or the polyrhythms found in his music. A lyric master.
The boys and I used to have a pretty impressive Rush air band back in the day. Fueled by a few beers we would play late into the night. Great memories.
As a Canadian I love watching reaction videos to ppl discovering RUSH. I grew up wanting a guitar and they inspired my ability to play all the instruments 🤜🏽❤️

Dude, 2112...itsa journey, itas an adventure, ancient artifacts, tyrannical overlords, space explorations, interstellar conquests...and it rocks hard! The were the best musicians in Rock n Roll!
Hey, huge thanks for reviewing this song! It's somehow appropriate that you posted this video on May 17, which happened to be my 53rd birthday. Why? Because this was the very first Rush song I ever heard. A friend turned me on to it back in 1980, when I was 14 years old. This song turned me into a Rush fan for life. And, perhaps more importantly, it's the song that made me decide to become a bass player. At that time, I was just beginning to learn to play guitar, and I don't think I was even really aware of the "bass guitar" as a distinct instrument. But I heard Geddy's bass during the instrumental section, and OMG, that was absolutely *the coolest thing I had ever heard in my life*. I fell in love with Rush and the bass guitar right then and there, and I've been a Rush fan and bass player for nearly 40 years now. But, dammit, I still can't play this song correctly. Almost, but not quite. That line, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" - it was apparently a popular line tossed around the "hippie" community back during the time these guys were in high school (according to my stepfather, who was an actual hippie back then).
Off the album permanent waves..my 2nd fav rush album..2112 being first! Free Will is very very good rush! Geddy Lee vocals are unreal on the high end pitch! I think I was 18 or 19 when this was released!
You’ll notice that ALL truly great bands whose music still lasts (Led Zep, etc) are comprised of members who individually possess extreme brilliance. No better example of this than Rush, where (aside from their unparalleled creative abilities) each member’s personal humility and good nature allowed them to work together and create masterpiece after masterpiece, decade upon decade. This band is a gift to humanity, both for their incredible music and lyrics, and for the inspirational way that they carried themselves in the glare of the spotlight for so long. I consider myself lucky to have been a fan since 1978. Their songs have enhanced my life! Great video, guys. Keep up the good work!
Good one, guys. I’ve always felt like the studio (Permanent Waves) recording of Freewill was the demo for the live (ESL) version... Alex’s playing gives the live version so much more finesse.
Have y’all seriously never heard this song? My son is 25 and he knows Rush. Of course we were both band geeks so I had him listen to everything from the 70’s and 80’s. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
My 11 year old son at a RUSH show in Charlotte 7 years ago...A woman was impressed he was there and asked him "is this your first concert?" He politely answered: "This is my third RUSH concert." Proud Papa here!
Great instrumental part....One of my all time favorite quotes is from William James when asked if he believed in free will said, " Of course. Do I have a choice?" Check out some lectures by psychophysicist (yes, it is a field) Donald Hoffman or neuroscientist Anil Seth. Also ties into the movie Inception.

@@mustangdebbie56 Working Man is a mediocre song, at best. That first album is good, but was very raw and 'Zeppelin like'. Rush really shined as a prog rock band when the SECOND album, 'Fly By Night' (and all their follow up albums to that one) came out!
@@AudiophileTubes I agree Working Man is raw and unsophisticated for Rush, but the live version done on their time machine tour 2011 is the best version, with the new intro, Alex going crazy, and of course, Neil elevating the whole song. ruclips.net/video/sI5VuBzo-Qc/видео.html
"Blame is better to give than receive" And "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice"! What amazing lines. I have used them many times in my life! Thanks Neil!
Great video, guys. “If you choose not to decide...” blew my mind in high school. Everything is a choice; so make good ones. Have a great weekend, boys.
This album was kinda of a change up from their previous albums, one that I really enjoyed. Glad you are still discovering RUSH. 00:00 Finding My Way from their debut album is a must for true RUSH fans.
I own "Rush" on vinyl. It's a collector's item. And that's all it will ever be - a collector's item. I hate that freakin' album... it's also missing 33% of the band. A must for "true fans" would be "Hold Your Fire". If you own that one, it means you really are a true Rush fan! ;)
@@surfeit5910 Working Man is the song that gave rush their breakthrough recognition. This album demonstrated their basic rock n roll abilities which granted them the opportunities to unleash their own style of music that we all grew to know and love as RUSH. Take A Friend 😆
From my limited knowledge of Rush, this is my favorite. I love the lyrics and especially Geddy's delivery. The instrumentals often remind me of jazz - it's like listening to each instrument playing their own song and yet they're cohesive. I give it a nine. Anytime you wanna waste a few hours talking about free will, let me know. I'll need a bottle of Crown Royal for fortification though. 🤓 🥃
You guys remind me of Wayne and Garth from Wayne's world. Don't take that wrong it's a compliment. You do a good job you listen and comment later I like that keep up the good work
Cool song, & yes, we do some things without really thinking about them, like blinking, breathing, scratching an itch, holding our breath before going underwater & many other things as well. We do consciously make choices too, & many of them are after we think about whether to do something or not do it, therefore free will exists. I also believe that we should hold ourselves responsible & accountable for the choices we make, especially the "bad" choices, & not pass the blame onto anyone or anything else that is not responsible. Doing that is the easy way out & it's simply a rather convenient way to pass the blame to make oneself feel better &/or justified for a "bad" choice, especially one that results in a detrimental outcome. It's right there in the song; "Blame is better to give than receive." Better for who? Of course it's better for the one dishing out the blame, not the one receiving it. There are certain circumstances brought on by choice where mutual responsibility/accountability is valid & justifiable too. I don't believe in supernatural fate or predestination, to me that is a fallacy, & that further cements my belief in free will.
It makes me so happy to see this younger generation appreciating the genius of RUSH. I saw them live during their first u.s. tour. All of us had the same reaction to them as you guys are having right now!
Here again off their first album . I dare you to play that one! I won't even explain but if u do u will see why! POWERFUL GEDDY LEE VOCALS AND THE LIFESON SOLO HEAVY HEAVY
Epic song. So glad you did this. Try Red Sector A. About the holocaust drawing on the experiences of Geddy Lees parents both were in Nazi concentration camps. Very hard hitting lyrics with some phenomenonally emotive music. Great live too
I grew up listening to Rush. My early adult years were filled with Rush. 20 years Navy we lived off music, it was our only escape. Rush is a group this is considered almost HOLY, to people of their time. What surprises me is, you try to rate them. Spend 96 days at sea with one of your forms of nourishment is performers like RUSH. Being in the military you have limited choices. This song gave us hope, like you can't imagine.
I mentioned it on one of your other vids, but Coheed and Cambria is a good choice after Rush because they're a modern day prog band. Welcome Home is their most popular song, but two of their most "prog" sounding sounds imo are In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 and The Dark Sentencer, which is off of their latest album. I promise you won't be disappointed.
I told you I told you I told you! Every live recorded version, and every time I've seen them play it live, when they come out of the solo section, the crowd roars in approval of impeccable musicianship.
Hope you all enjoyed the video! Go VOTE in the Poll to choose the next Rush song we check out! 😁🔥

Seeing you guys trying to figure out what instrument to listen to at different times during the song was great fun to watch. Nice video!
The more you listen to this one...the more it will creep up your listening list. Great song....with a great reaction. Keep it going guys...good stuff. Maybe Working Man as your next kick a Rush tune.
No No NO! 'Working Man' is OK, but not nearly as epic and mind blowing musically as Rush's later stuff.... AFTER that first album!
The live version of Working Man in Cleveland is the best.
Guys just so you know RUSH is the greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be. Oh and yeah Natural Science go for it.
This was the song that made me a Rush fan and I'm happy to hear that you liked it.
You guys need to delve into more 'Yes'!! Please do 'Heart of the Sunrise'!!
Try my channel scott
'If you choose not to decide....you still have made a choice'..best line ever! Thanks guys!
Great video, guys. “If you choose not to decide...” blew my mind in high school. Everything is a choice; so make good ones. Have a great weekend, boys.
Have to have to have to do Natural Science. Best epic Rush song ever.
Live version from rush in Rio for natural science. Best ever
You will love Great King Rat for its rusty wild guitars and drum gallopade:) by Queen of course
It's on a different level isn't it. Challenging people was one of Neil's greatest talents.
You do a good job you listen and comment later I like that keep up the good work
Just joined. Thanks lads. Love your reactions to Rush. Thx from Scotland 😀🏴😀
Love Geddy's vocals at full bore, after the guitar solo. WOW!
You guys are lucky to have all their music available. We old guys had to wait a year or more between albums. But I saw them live 9 times.
Epic song. So glad you did this. Try Red Sector A. About the holocaust drawing on the experiences of Geddy Lees parents both were in Nazi concentration camps. Very hard hitting lyrics with some phenomenonally emotive music. Great live too
"It's gonna take a couple of listens..."
"Yeah. And a fuckin' SAT book !"
I laughed out loud. ;-)
@TacomaPaul
Lol!! 😂
I love to see a new generation realizing "mom music"yes young gentlemen, your mom and dad were way cooler than you can fathom.
I told you I told you I told you! Every live recorded version, and every time I've seen them play it live, when they come out of the solo section, the crowd roars in approval of impeccable musicianship.
You have to watch Working Man Live in Cleveland Time Machine Tour! It is out of this world
Sooo much analysis! Only Rush💥
