    It's good to see coverage of the long-serving flagship of the Spanish Armada, who gave as good as service as her British half-sisters/cousins.
    I hope you make a full recovery from your illness!

    The Spanish warships of this era and the naval engagements of the Spanish Civil War are very fascinating, as there isn't a lot of information about them. Great video.

    Thanks. We mostly hear about ships from the larger navies - so this is interesting.

    Well done production.
    It is perhaps worth mentioning that in the late thirties, Spain navy had plans to build four battleships modeled on the Italian Littorio class.
    But was canceled because Italy joined the war, and Spain had limited finances.
    Then also a plan to build a "super-cruiser", with the triple turrets from the damaged Gneisenau.
    It was also cancelled.

    • @RedXlV
      @RedXlV 6 месяцев назад +1

      There were also a bunch of heavy cruiser designs offered by Italy to Spain during World War II. And that super-cruiser design had three different concepts. One was using a pair of the 283mm triple turrets removed from Gneisenau. One was with three of 305mm twin turrets salvaged from España or Jaime I. And one was a conventional heavy cruiser with four triple 203mm turrets. If any of those had been built, they seem like they would've been very powerful ships.

    So, correct me if I'm wrong, but in Espana, the Spanish language carries a lisp when pronouncing certain words. For example, Zaragosa Spain is pronounced 'Zaragotha' and Tudela is likewise pronounced 'Tuthela'. So, if that trend carries, would this ship be called the 'Canariath'?
    Otherwise, really interesting story about a ship I knew nothing about. I had to pause initially when looking at her design, because it almost looks like her design incorporates more than one ship design. Her main battery, and hull profile look like a British County Class Heavy Cruiser, but her secondary armaments look almost Italian, and her superstructure reminds me of a New Orleans, or Portland Class American Heavy cruiser. Hard to believe this poor girl had to endure three successive governments before finally being able to sail under peaceful seas. Every ship has a soul, and a story to tell, and thank you for telling us the story of Miss Canarias! Hope you start to feel better soon, and always looking forward to more vids from you!

      Born in the southeast of Spain and moved to London. The answer is no, no it does not carry on in the name Canarias because that isn’t how it supposed to be pronounced. Most people, including myself, tend to talk fast and mispronounce words with the letter s. For example, the most common instance of mispronouncing words is with the word for ‘heart’ (corazón), most Spanish people end up pronouncing it ‘corasón’ instead of how it’s supposed to be which is like ‘corathón’ but that doesn’t change the fact that technically speaking we are pronouncing it wrong.
      This is, most don’t see it as much of a deal because non-spanish speakers hardly notice it and Spanish speakers don’t care. I mispronounce my surname often because of that lisp and no one really says anything or corrects it unless they are like the type of assholes who correct small grammar mistakes online. In short, don’t think about it much.

      Cheers, for the info! I have always wanted to visit parts of Spain (As I have heard the food is incredible, and the scenery is beautiful. Not to mention as a student of history, I adore the Iberian Peninsula for how much has occurred there.), and I would have looked like a buffoon doing exactly that, overthinking it.
      Thanks again, and I hope you have a happy New Year's in London!@@emily6775

    The republican navy had a very big problem that determined its performance through the war. That problem was that the majority of the command officers of the fleet aligned with the nationalists while the lower decks with the republic, which led the latter to promptly execute all the officers. From then on, it was not as much that the republican fleet had to do something else, but that the ships lacked properly trained command. It's a 'what if' scenario, but it's widely accepted if it were not for this problem, the republican navy wouldn't have had any problem dealing with the few opposing ships.

    I feel like everyone is sick right now. I've been fighting something and literally 4 of the 6 guys I work with have been sick for like a week. This great Philadelphia weather lately goes from 60 to 25 in a few hours with lots of rain 😂. Plus I'm still fishing which definitely ain't helping. The North Atlantic this time of year isn't exactly nice

    I say this as a compliment but it would be good to get the occasional video about the other topics your channel is noted as covering (general history and/or gaming history). It would be interesting to see your research on one of those other topics. Can't tell if you just love naval history so much or it tickles the algorithm so well which is why you stick to it? Haha.

    • @Dave_Sisson

      When deciding which channels to subscribe to, I usually look for consistency or sticking to a broad theme that interests me. While a few deviations don't worry me, if this channel became a half gaming channel, I would probably unsubscribe to avoid my subs feed being cluttered with things of no interest to me. While gaming isn't my thing, I know that there are plenty of gaming channels, but only a few naval ones. So as long as he continues with naval history and doesn't do reaction videos (which I hate) or go close to copying channels like Drachinifel or Historograph, I will remain a loyal subscriber.

      I'm going to go over this in a Channel Update video after New Years. The general gist of things, though, is that I focused on the ship videos (especially after the ship*wreck* videos took off) to get channel growth going.
      I do fully intend, however, on covering other topics. The History Through Games videos are something that will only ever be a rare thing, since I'm fully aware they aren't particularly popular.
      (relatedly, to the other comment on here, it would never- ever -be a half-gaming channel. Those videos were only intended as a break, here and there, not the secondary focus)
      A more major secondary focus would be the aircraft videos. I do want to do more of those, they're just a tad more difficult to research. Which is why I'm picking them back up *next* year. Ditto the alternate history stuff.
      Will probably also do tanks or other military vehicles, and of course, battle overviews.

      @@skyneahistory2306 That's about the best, most comprehensive answer I could ask for. So, yeah, all makes sense. Don't get me wrong, I love your naval stuff because the topics are all pretty unique and the delivery is good.

      Si en la otra marina beligerante no hubiesen asesinado a la oficialidad (sin mirar quién estaba sublevado/quién no) en Julio del 36 a lo mejor podrían haber impedido el paso del Estrecho al ejército contrario y haber liquidado la contienda en un mes. Y lo que algún id1ot4 fabula (x100) en la tontopedia no hubiese sucedido (x1)....Un recuerdo a uno de los comandantes del crucero Canarias, ya fallecido, al que conocí hace casi 40 años.

    I'd like to add two points: (1) The sinking of the republican destroyer in the strait of Gibraltar was the longest range hit achieved so far, over 12.000 m. (2) The republican navy never ever got a single capture of any merchant ship racing for the national-catholic insurrects. A telling figure (zero) of their lack of effectiveness compared to the professionalism of the insurrect navy.

    Didn't these ships have a huge single funnel that was supposed to make it instantly recognizable for the nationalists.

    • @isidroramos1073
      @isidroramos1073 9 месяцев назад +2

      They did when launched (tough I bet the part about making them recognizable is a myth, since the Nationalist had a third cruiser, Cervera, and that one didn't) but Canarias was heavily modified during its long life afloat.
