I’ve used an rb67 for years on a tripod, handheld, hiking. Obviously it’s not light and compact but it’s a joy to use, reliable and always great results.

I'm 6'5 and 130kg. The Pentax 6x7 actually looks like a normal camera in reference to myself, it's only when people get close they start to notice something is wrong.
Took my RB up Halfdome. Having a removable back is a really good thing to have.
I shot the RB67 for years it was my studio camera and it lived on tripod. I now shoot a Hasselblad 503 and I take it everywhere. I hike with it and it is heavy but worth it.

There were loads of lenses for the Pentax 6x7 when I bought mine in 2008. Now cameras are hard to find and lenses like the 105 2.4 is now £300 plus and only from Japan with high shipping costs.
I still have my 6 x7 with the 55mm f4 with the rubber focus grip. I love it. The best 6x7 in my experience.
My friend had an RB which was a brick he only used it at home.
I take my Pentax everywhere.
I got a fully working Mamiya RZ67 Pro 1 for 450 euros with two ground glasses and a prism finder in an antique shop. The owner of the store didn't know anything about cameras and it was so hard to keep a straight face.
A great 6x7 camera that I love (I just bought my second one) is the Koni Omega Rapid cameras. They were 6x7 system press cameras based on a military camera from WW2. Great rangefinder and they are heavy but the ergonomics are fabulous so it is comfortable to carry around all day. Like the Mamiya 7 you do need external finders for the wide angles (there are 2). There are several different versions and they were produced from the late 50s till 1981.
Agreed! The least expensive way to enter medium format (6x7). Getting harder to find equipment which has not been used up by some pro. I started 120 photography years ago with this system, and I still have it. The lenses are outstanding.

Linhof made several 6x7 cameras, such as Linhof 220, LInhof Press 70, Aero Press 70.
Agree about 6x6 and always cropping. I have a Mamiya 6, and more than half the time feel it's more a 645. Have to decide on a 6x7.

I purchased the Pentax 6x7 in 1982 - An awesome 'piece of kit,' and used the Wooden Pistol grip. At that time I used a Metz Flash.

nice video, but while on the subject of range-finder 6 x 7 ' s you forgot the Mamiya press (super 23 and UNIVERSAL) with a RB back plate adapter, rare, but still a consideration.
I have had an RB67 for 12 years now. I bought it used for $150 back then including a beat up lens. However, the flower photos I have taken with it have been mind blowing. I still have not gotten the same quality, almost three dimensional, from any of the mirrorless cameras I have owned along the way. I think I will take it out again and start shooting with it. Thanks. Film is just better, you cant replicate film with digital no matter how much you try. Imitations are purely imitations they lack all the soul that film has

Ahh! But you are coming from an earlier generation. You Tubers today have no conception of what types of cameras were available prior to the 1970s. Doubt the idea of any of the several varieties of Linhof cameras which shoot 6x7 format on 120 roll film ever occurred to our author. You have admit that finding a good condition Linhof cameras with their matched lenses is going to be a challenge and a cost probably in excess of must cameras discused here.

The RZ67 Pro II and Pro IID also have a fine focus knob (vs the RZ67 Pro).
Years ago I bought a used Fugi 6x7 at a camera show. Fixed lens but it’s all you need. Incredibly sharp. I use it for infrared because it’s a rangefinder so you’re not looking through the filter.
Bronica GS-1 user here. Very easy to use handheld with speedgrip, for vertical just rotate your wrist and support with other hand. Not a lot of lenses but with such a big negative I don’t feel that anything is missing. Accessorizing is not too hard on ebay (except the flash, but my Canon speedlite works in the bronica hot shoe, not metered but triggered). Always a reasonable number of complete systems on ebay, very competitive pricing. Typical weight with box, film back, one lens, speed grip and metered prism about six pounds. About same as a wooden large format field camera with lens and film holders.

GS-1 owner here as well. The lenses are super sharp and and is easy to hand hold. Just scored a dedicated Bronica GS-1 TTL flash, hard to find, so I jumped on it. You can get a complete system with a couple of backs and three lenses for well under a $1000. Its a great 6x7 outfit.
Hi, another GS-1 owner here, super system that doesn’t get enough credit (as most of Bronica’s gear)as it should. Lenses are great, sure there are only like 10, but all the ones that you need are there. The camera is meant to shoot with the speedgrip, like a big 35mm system, so I don’t understand all the hype about the Mamiya RZ / RB rotating back.
@@zonev3119 I agree about the over hype about the Mamiya. It may be a factor in the studio, but the rotating back just adds weight for street use IMHO. A trimmed downed gs-1 with a waist finder and single lens is comparible in size to my mamiya c330
TXLorenzo and Bronica did address shooting the camera in the studio, with the revolving tripod adapter and prism (luckily I have both), it makes shooting on a tripod easy
My medium format camera of choice is the Zenza Bronica S2. It's no lightweight, weighing almost 2Kg, but it's an awesome camera. I shoot mine with the Nikkor 50mm f/2.8, the Nikkor 75mm f/2.8 and the Sankyo Kohki Komura 200mm f/3.5. I carry the entire kit, along with my old Sekonic hand held light-meter in a small backpack. Hiking is totally doable, and the images are amazing. That said, this is a 6x6 format, which I prefer over the 6x7, in part because orientation becomes a non issue, but that's just personal taste. Glad to see your recommendation for Pentax. I also shoot with an old Pentax 35mm film kit. I think Pentax is one of the most underrated cameras out there. Their older lenses are truly excellent!

I have both a Pentax 67 and a Mamiya RB67 for 6x7. I love the RB waaaay more than the Pentax. I take it everywhere. Walk around for hours at a time with it in my hands (just recently got a strap), it's not that heavy once you get used to it. I also find it way easier to hold than the Pentax. Eventhough I also have a Rolleiflex, Polaroid 600SE (with rollfilm back - 6x45, 6x6, 6x9) and a Hasselblad coming in, I don't really like the 6x6 format. I catch myself always grabbing the RB67 instead of any of the others.
I have taken an RB67 + 3 lenses on a 20km hike - heavy, but not a big deal.
Only one, the Bronica GS-1! It can use a 135W back! Also the thumb winder speed grip like the ETRSi.
Notes: 1. A second Plaubel model was sold with a wide angle lens; the model shown has a defective shutter cable design which guarantees that it will fail; repairs are ?? ; Plaubel costs a lot more than stated. 2. Missed the Fuji GF670 and its Cosina/Voigtlander cousin, in both normal and wide angle lens designs; a fairly modern, folding design with excellent lens; expensive.
I have the Pentax 6x7, and I can confirm, the big mirror-slap is a myth. You can hand-hold it at 1/60 even 1/30 without a problem
Play nice guys, it depends on the magnification of your prints so for some people 1/30th is fine

@John Texas Call it what you like. I think it immature, or perhaps more naive, to think that ones own ability reflects the abilities of another. You seem to think your abilities are superior to others. I, as have many others handheld "professional" (as you call it) work with slower shutter speeds. This is art, there are no standards for what makes something professional. I'll throw in an Ansel Adams quote to end my rant, "There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept." and as a bonus "There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs."
The Plaubel Makina comes in a wide angle version as well. I really don't think you can get a decent one for 700 quid, though. More like double that...
The RB67 isn't *THAT* heavy, man! OP/TECH makes a neoprene strap that takes the standard lugs to make carry a bit easier. I shoot with mine regularly outside of the studio.
I know I really make a point of the weight but people who have never held one always think it looks lighter than it is!
I use it handheld for street portraits! Maybe its just me but its not that heavy

My RB67 is my favorite camera, the weight has never been an issue for me
I also shoot mine handheld with the Optech strap but let's not lie the RB67 is VERY heavy

Linhof 2X3 technika systems. Technika 70 and Linhof super Technika vb. These can be used as range finders with ground glass focusing. More rugged than the Plaubel Makina, much heavier. I have recently been using a Linhof press 70 with 120 and 220 film backs. The weight of these cameras and fast lenses make them useful for low light hand held shooting. The press 70 is a beast that has no bellows. 53mm, 80mm and 180mm lens built in viewfinder and range finder focusing. With the 70mm film back I get 52 exposures on fresh hp5+ film or expired film from eBay.
RBs are perfectly portable if you're buff or just insane ;)

Great video. I would also recommend one of my favorite cameras of all time the Koni Omega rangefinders. The 90mm is claimed by some to be as sharp as the 80mm Zeiss for the Hasselblad. They are also tough as nails and great ergonomics so even though it weights alot it doesn't feel like it so much when you are lugging it around. It is also the world's only bolt action camera. It also has an interesting history. It was designed by an American company but built by two different Japanese firms (originally Konica hence the name and later by Mamiya). it has removable backs so you can shoot 120 or 220 (if you can still find it).
Fuji GF670 is also worth to mention! (but i'm not sure is it worth buying at these prices)
I would love to have a GF670, but the prices are definitely in the insane area. Try getting something like an older Mamiya 6 folding camera for a fraction of the price and still have some 120 film camera fun.

I'm hiking quite easily with the RB67 and two lenses, 20-30km in medium terrain, it all fits in the shoe compartment of my backpack so it's not a run and gun setup but if you want to stop and take some photos it's easily done in about the same time as it takes to tie your shoelaces. I don't see what people mean with it being *too* big and bulky. Sure it's not the same as carrying my mirrorless, but I wouldn't say it's more cumbersome to carry around than when I was carrying around the Canon 5D with L-lenses. I guess it all depends on your priorities, but saying that it only belongs on a tripod is ignorant and lazy.

Yea, the RB is a great way to enter the medium format world and then find what you really want. I'm glad I had mine, I ended up with a good selection of wide to telephoto lenses and accessories but I don't miss it. Shooting handheld is like holding a bag of hammers and it weighs a ton... Videos and internet testimonials don't prepare you for the size and weight. Add in the backwards nature of a waist level, two winders and a darkslide and it's a very clunky experience. Still... A lot of bang for your buck image quality wise
Sure the RZ is partially electric, but at the same time is a little better. Especially the Pro II version. If you're scared of the whole electric parts pooping out on you. Well that would only be the body. The lenses and backs and all the rest of it are still usable, that is if it even brakes on you which is unheard of. Also they are actually able to be used without a battery on the Emergency mode, the options of shutter speed are limited to 1/500 of a second but it's still usable if the battery that lasts years ever dies on you.. so. IMO I'd still take the the PROII version over the older RBs as you get all the lenses you want for both systems, and you could also use things like the eye level viewfinder with a meter and Exp. compensation.
Use a tripod, if the weight bothers you! But the RB 6x7 and the RZ are useable handheld!

The RB is a fantastic camera, it's just very heavy which can limit its use outside of a studio environment. I had one but swapped to the Pentax for weight reasons!
I have the Mamiya RB and Bronica cameras but I prefer my fuji GX680...
I can regularly shoot 1/30 to 1/15 and still have sharp photos.

No that lens is for Mamiya 645s, the image circle would be too small and there aren’t any adapters I’m afraid

I carry a mamiya 645 around all the time and a speed graphic and many other heavy cameras and the RB isnt that bad.

The prices of all of them have shifted up but the Plaubel is the most painful! I wouldn’t recommend buying one today - check out the Fuji 6x7 rangefinders (still £1000+).
Great series! But what about 6x8 and 6x9?
I always planned to make the 'larger formats' video but there are simultaneously too many and not enough options. For the 6x8 I can think of a couple of fuji options but once we reach 6x9 it's just that GW690ii and then reducing backs for 4x5.
The panoramic cameras look fun as hell but they're incredibly expensive and rather niche. The fuji 6x17s for example cost around $3000-$4000, get 4 shots per roll and require centre filters to expose evenly, it's not exactly a review with a large audience.

Exactly - I used one handheld with a winder, prism and 220 back for twenty years - I now use a Fuji GX 680III and its a piece of candy with images sharp as a cut lemon

@@RichardsModellingAdventures Brilliant - I use the Pola back on the GX for compo/lighting/exposure - the film is readily available now - Fuji Insta, Polaroid itself, The Impossible Camera Co and Lomography - Film is making a resurgence - andI think in part its due to the downsides of digital - cost vs instant gratification - (also makes anyone with a digi cam is suddenly a pro apparently) and if you do what I do scan and process digitally - essentially taking out all the smelly long-winded expense and hassle of chem - i used to own a pro darkroom with rooms full of machinery - its a win win - and as for IQ it still beats a Phase One - but it's getting closer - but then how much is a Phase One set up for a proper pro? 100k+!!!!!! I have been Pro for thirty years and recently hired a Phase One XF with an IQ 80mpx - it gave up after ten minutes - luckily I had my Fuji all ready to go - was actually just going to do some test shots - the clients were thrilled at the sheer staggering quality of what I presented to them.

@@RichardsModellingAdventures Lab every time - however - there is a new little lab on my radar - its called the Film-O-Matic - created by a crazy German - I powered my way through 3 RZ's they are absolutely fantastic cameras - I cannot recommend them highly enough - yes I love the Fuji but the RZ is equally as stunning - I just needed the front standard movements for my portrait work. I wanted to be a painter and studied art but was hopeless at it - I found my canvas was film and never looked back but secretly still wish I could draw/paint. Have a super one
This presentation is more a catalog of cameras out there on the used market in fairly large volumes. Little is devoted to sorting by use. For example, the Mamyia RB/RZ models are great studio cameras, but limited in the field where they will require a tripod unless you are just trying to make a point. The Pentax 67 system (my choice) is a poor studio camera for its lack of quick change backs and focal plane shutter with slow flash synch.. The Mamyia 7 is a field, not studio, camera, but it's light build has lead to a number of problems unique to the model, and its leaf shutters hamper larger aperture lenses. It's all a trade off and no one model is great at everything.
Everytime I take my mamiya 645 out and hand shoot it people always want to stop me and t alk about it and it wastes my time and is frankly annoying as hell.
Never cared for the boxy, in- between 6x7 format. 1:1 is perfect for somethings and 3:2 is glorious as a rectangle.(And 3:1 is Exquisite!). So, for Medium Format, the Mamiya 6 is perfection and in 6x9, the Fujica GW 690 is the sweetspot of size, portability, image quality and economy.
Plaubel M for £700 in 2018? No chance - try doubling that.

Much is made of the large mirror of the Pentax 67. the size of the mirror is dictated by the format, so the same applies to the two Mamiya SLRs. Clumsy as it may be in fact, it is quite possible to handhold at lower shutter speeds by framing your shot, then tripping mirror up for a second hold before releasing the shutter. My itself, thee shutter shock folks talk about is the shutter closing, which of course is after the photo is taken. If you buy Pentax 67 and want a leaf shutter lens, buy the later 165mm LS, not the 90mm LS. The 90mm is very old and thee are absolutely no repair parts for the leaf shutter. Also, the regular 90mm is cheaper and far better optically. Better 165mm lenses, the non-leaf shutter is faster and better optrically..

The RZ for me is the best - you can use it handheld - but the 180mm diamond has a certian flatness akin to some hass lenses which if you do fashion like I do is perfect - in fact the lens was designed for that - also if you use filters all the front elements on RZ lenses are standardardised - don't forget also bellows focusing which is brilliantly accurate and simple - and if you really wanta tip top big ass camera then go for the Fuji GX680 - cheap as chips on ebay (remember there are 4 iterations though!!)
Can I use SD backs on the Pro S? I just bought a Pro S cause found an amazing deal but I had already bought a Polaroid Pro SD back in anticipation for Supersense bringing back packfilm
Hi James, the backs are usually interchangeable but I’m not sure about the Polaroid versions. They have the same mounting system but the shape of an SD back is slightly different to the Pro-S. I reckon you’ll be ok but can’t say for sure
@@JonathanNotley cheers, the mounting part of the Polaroid back looks like it has 4 pins that slots in and the manual says that to attach to the camera body, you would have to remove the camera's revolving adapter?

....in fact,I spin and carried crates of records for years,which i still have.Back then the power amps alone could easily be 30+ lbs,and speakers were passive them,so they weighed much.I also dabble in IT,and have an IBM mini mainframe which probably weighs around 200 lbs.I also backpack and I take my gear with me,cameras,laptop,etc,etc.

I checked the prices on the day of upload and saw one of the older models at this price. Bear in mind there are multiple versions of the camera - some even have a 65mm lens.
Jonathan Notley Thank you for reply. Understood. You might see the one old German Plaubel, not with Nikkor, not 67. I thought you mentioned Plaubel Makina 67 series by Japanese company (which has 55mm ver, W67)
What is the actual weight of the RB?
Around 3kg for back/body/standard lens but as a kit probably around 5 kg. Its bulk is also and issue, it doesn't hang around the neck well at all, and takes up a fair amount of space in bags. I'm not saying it's a bad camera, and many people have created fantastic results with it - it's just not the 'travel friendly' option!

All the prices have gone up a chunk since the release. The plaubel price was generous for the time but they’re now significantly overpriced.
@@JonathanNotley Let's say some cameras' prices go up as a result of internet coverage, an example could be the Pentax 6x7. Now a base model is hard to find below 1.000
The mamiya 7 does not fold up. I find it one of the most overrated cameras of all time. Feels cheap, lenses are Sharp but slow. Pentax 67ii all the way.

But its so light!! you wont feel like youre dragging bricks all the time.
The biggest reason against the Pentax 6x7 is it's battery dependence. I bought a whole system and a year later sold it all. Both bodies froze on location. I love the Mamiya 6 but won't trust it for the same reason. I love my mechanical Fujica6x9 and Linhof617.

It’s not a case of shouldn’t it’s a case of it being more suited to a studio environment. I personally have both an RZ and a Pentax 67 and the RZ rarely gets outdoors. Another reason for this is that the focal plane shutter on the Pentax allows for faster lenses (105mm 2.4 and 165 2.8 spring to mind) and suits it to available light. The leaf shutter on the RZ makes it ideal for strobes.
But the Mamiya 7, being the lightest and most suitable for carrying around outside, also has slow lenses (F4 or slower). I have the 6 (with similarly slow lenses), and this hasn't been a problem at all for available light. Although, being a rangefinder, you can go a little slower with the shutter speed.
Portrait and landscape are subjects not orientations. Rotate for vertical or horizontal. Feel free to make horizontal portraits of your friends and vertical landscapes of waterfalls.
Portrait-orientation and landscape-orientation are common terms for a rectangle taller than it is wide and wider than it is tall respectively. I’m not suggesting you must stick to either for specific subjects it’s just easier to use than “with the long side of the frame parallel to the ground” etc
Common terms for people who use cameras with little picture modes on a dial. Don't forget about the 90 LS for the Pentax 6x7 for higher sync speeds
I am assuming you are English right ? So why are you pronouncing a Z like an American.
