Sad how these wrecks are deteriorating. Used to be only accessible through the forward torpedo loading tube. The Navy came and welded a grate over it and removed the munitions that were lying around, but a torpedo half out of one of the tubes was deemed too dangerous and they left it. Probably the week after the Navy closed the boat, divers with torches opened it again. The deck gun is displayed at the dive shop. We looked a long time for the U-701 and spoke with the officer who sunk it and the german captain of the boat, but turns out someone did find it and kept it secret for a while. That is also a good dive, but in more dangerous waters. We have 3 german subs sunk off the NC coast. All of these wrecks are in 120 to 140 feet of water, so not "sport diving" depth.
@@blazingcobra7228 as far as I know that answer is no. It's considered a war site or somthing like that so going in is against the law. I don't know about asking for special clarence. Edit: I do remember sticking my head in and looking around. Without a light it's pretty much pitch black in there.
@@blazingcobra7228 unfortunately I believe so. The dive shop I went to sold a great DVD movie on the U-352 and it showed what it looked like inside. It had to of been made from the 80s-90s though.
Divers penetrate the sub frequently, myself included. Steve is right, it is a war grave and should be respected. As long as divers aren’t doing anything blatantly disrespectful, no one will cause any friction. I personally would caution against penetrating unless you have the training and experience to handle it. There’s nothing in there worth dying for. Dive safe.
