Nice find. I think you did it right the first time. If I'm not mistaken, you don't soak the top piece in lighter fluid.

There are no major problems with this method. This product's burner has a catalyst wrapped in glass fiber cloth, which prevents soot from adhering to it. This is done to prevent the soot from sticking to the wick.

looks great, that catalyst looks brand new. I have one i bought as new old stock with the manual. One of these days ill have to make a pdf of the manual or something. The only downside of flaming up the head is the heat could in time oxidize the catalyst material. But it definatly reduces the warm up time if you blow it out after about 10 seconds.

There shouldn't be a visible flame when using it. You just need to warm up the container enough for the fuel to start evaporating. That red top part is a catalytic burner that causes a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with the evaporating fuel, which in turn creates the heat.

Should it flame until it heats up?

@Olwyn Skye - Correct and I light mine on the opposite side of the wick . It should only take a few seconds before you see the glow in the catalytic material .
I just place my hand close to the catalytic material for a shadow to make sure the glowing / combustion is occurring .

@@doinsngoins I forgot to say THANKS for your video . I carry a nasal spray bottle with fuel in a shirt pocket under a coat in cold weather . It's enough fuel for at least 12 hours and body heat makes it vaporize faster . Keeping the hand warmer and or Zippo lighter close to body heat until needed helps a lot . Don't mean to be preachy , but at least 1 Jon-E and Zippo are with me in cold weather for 55 years .
All the best Bro and thanks for your video . Lefty
