  • Today's video is just for fun. After last week's episode, I figured it would be good to do something light. It's a story about tanning, virginity, and how we basically can find anything attractive so long as it means that person is doing well socially.

You need some custom hacked-up shit made from a Raspberry Pi.
And it's gotta run some kind of Linux, too. Unless you REAL hardcore and willing to do BSD. Either works, though.
TRUE status-symbol aesthetic means you gotta look like you ain't been outside since Amazon came out.

  • @eruditootidure2611

~2:23 It's really a bit of both; plenty of cultures viewed light skin as favourable due to tans being associated with outdoor labour, but other cultures only view light skin as favourable due to more recent western influence. In Black Americans and Caribbeans, for example (especially the latter), colourism came about based on the better treatment of mixed race people compared to people with more African ancestry/darker skin. In India, meanwhile, dark skin used to be seen as desirable (I'm not sure if there was any specific reason for this, but old Indian texts certainly glorify dark skin), whereas colorism and skin bleaching is a big issue in modern India.

"... and yet, we are." Ah yes, one of the great "joys" of self discovery (natch, it's rarely a joy in the actual moment of discovery :P) is just how petty, crazy, weird, jerkish, fooled, and hoist on our own petard we are and can be, no matter how aware and "rational" we think we are. :) And even more "amusing" is how often we can discover that.... At least once we get over that shock, we've got new insights and new freedom to actually be as we'd like to be. Thanks Evan, this is a great channel, love the spotlight you shine to challenge my automatic, already knowing.

This was a plot-point in the 1994 film Rapa Nui. When I first saw the movie as a young teenager, I presumed the entire movie was conjecture. But since then, I went and looked it up. While they didn't get everything quite right for plot and time reasons, it really surprised me how much of the film turned out to be evidence based. Am I weird for thinking paleness is beautiful on white people? And the opposite goes for black people. Dark skinned black people, not just average dark, but so dark their skin has lost almost all brownness, especially on the women, is beautiful. I don't like tans and bronzing and bleaching and all that fakery. My dream husband always had long, brown or black hair, skin as pale as mine (I've often been compared to a porcelain doll, and I actually glow a little under a black light. [Insert semen joke here]), and bright blue/green eyes. Weight between 150 and 250, depending on height, an aspect I don't care about at all. Ten years ago I was hellbent on marrying a man only a few inches taller than me, and I was an average height woman, at 5'4.5“ tall, (The "was" is a long story. Sneaky genetic disease that waits til adulthood to become a major ordeal.) but he fit that description, and I thought, incorrectly, we were very compatible, but friendship and romance show you different faces of a person. I am highly monogamist, and have a natural tendency I can only call "blinders" where, once I'm in a relationship, other men are just there. I don't notice if they're attractive or would make good partners. But he wanted to be swingers! I couldn't abide this. I loved him dearly, but I couldn't give him what he wanted, so I let him go, after two whole years of staving it off, with a FWB relationship thereafter, whenever I was single. (he was safe, the only setup of this kind I ever had, and my life, especially from 2013 to him in 2019, my entire teenhood, was comedically ridiculous in how many bad things can happen to one girl, largely because she was born to bad parents in a shithole culture).
I still eventually got my wish, a pale, blue eyed husband. It's not a race thing. I've been with a black guy too, even though he was the opposite of the stereotype. I left him because he was a fitness guy, and I have severe health problems that would only hold him back. My husband has blond hair, but it's a dark blond. Good enough. Easily the most attractive man I've been with, but that pales in comparison to his strong moral fiber, patience of a Buddhist monk, hopeless romantic under a rough and tough look and public persona (every woman wants this.), great sense of humor (every woman also likes this, though many don't get his brand of humor, whereas I do, and turn it into a game where I play back), extraordinary guitar talent (being extremely skilled and passionate about something has always been a relationship requirement to me, romantically and otherwise. Untalented people are boring.) and his "high standards for myself, live and let live to others" worldview. He shares my monogamist view, and we have the same relationship ideals. I once asked him if he was made in a lab just for me. He pointed out that I'm six months younger, and if anyone was made for anyone, it'd be me for him. I love my pale, "Metalhead Legolas" looking husband, who wishes he'd have waited til marriage, and I hate that his job tans him a little (he's a tanker driver, so his left side often tans in summer) because I love the natural him.
I'm a pregnancy risk (part of why I've lost height, I have a genetic illness), but I'm hoping that I can use artificial womb tech or a surrogate to make our corpse-complected baby, and CRISPR to ensure my degenerative genetic disease is not passed down, as, naturally, there is a 50/50 shot. It's autosomal dominant. No, I'm not a eugenicist, but I wouldn't wish this disease on my worst enemy (well, I can think of a handful of people who could use the humility it brings, but, that aside), it'd be my worst nightmare that my baby suffers from this, and there's nothing I can do.
Sorry, tl;dr, I know. I can't write a brief anything to save my life. Word limits were the bane of my existence in uni.
Basically, I'm a shockingly pale woman, and find paleness in white people to be far more attractive than the Donald Trump look, or any other form of tanning. Probably because I'm majority Scottish and Irish in heritage.

initially thought this was going to be a pseudo-rant about trolls in the comments then i felt guilty after the video for thinking you'd stoop to that level. i'd never knew about the whole 'sending virgins to caves' thing, pretty cool.

The weight thing, while less extreme then in Hawaii, but until recently in the grand scheme of European history, used to be fat = desirable as well. It meant you had access to reliable sources of food and didn't have to exercise. But then it flipped, just like tanning. Now being fat means you spend so much time working an office job you can't find the time to go to the gym. And you can't afford healthy food, and have to subside on takeout.

I don't know about Canada or the rest of the US, but in the American central gulf coast it means you are either blue collar middle or lower middle class. It means you are a construction worker, plumber, etc. A tan means hard work ethic, which is something we admire.

It's fascinating because in Europe, in the past light skin meant you didn't have to farm or work at all and could stay out of the sun, now a tan is a symbol of being able to go and vacation at the beach or outside instead of staying in doors and working all day. XD
Reminds me or weight, where once plump was beautiful when food was harder to come by and eating too much was a symbol of wealth - now since food is cheap, being skinny is the beauty standard because you have to have the time and money to eat healthy and work out.
Whatever is harder to attain and demands wealth and status is what is considered most attractive for the time. ^^

wow like always, you propose ideas which blows my mind! And inspires me to research more. For example i didn't realise that the obsession of my fellow asian counterparts born & raised in asia, may have existed well before western influences. And that makes sense - the poorer workers in outdoor labour type jobs would dream of being one of the rich & well connected upper class who would be indoors mostly and therefore paler.

You know, I’m so used to the notion of _“Pasty white virgin”_ being associated with males, I forgot that historically it was mainly women who society focused their attention on (generally speaking) when it came to virginity. I mean there are many that focus on males being virgins, but they’re mainly religious in focus; whereas with women it’s mainly about marriage, with some exceptions pertaining to religion of course. Made me realize that society sure does focus a lot on _“Purity”,_ in the sense that women often had to be virgins, _for some reason._

I'm also terrible at tanning. and no, not because i dont have time to sunbathe. I'm either paper white or cherry red. 15 minutes in a field in new england on a pleasant spring morning... and I'll be peeling for 3 days. and nope, i wont burn once and then tan. i'll just burn again and again and again.

Ppl will forever want what they do not have. I'm Armenian, I have Mediterranean features, by skin bronzes up like a Greek statue during just the first day of summer. I have never, never, ever found tanning as a desirable thing. Actually, I prefer how light I got during the winter months as a kid. Today, my skin has seen too much sun to ever get that back. :(

I work with a few (young) Korean ladies in the middle east.
They are obsessed to avoiding exposure to the sun for fear of darkening their skin. Apparently in Korean it symbolises status; dark skin implies poverty and outdoor manual labour.

Tanning is dumb. It’s bad for your skin. And it’s so temporary it’s not worth it
