  • In this video I talk about "Asian Squat" also known as Primal Squat, its benefits and how to practice and improve it.
I give you a broad picture of the benefits of squat. For specific exercises to improve your squat, please refer to my other squat videos, particularly Primal Squat video.
I so often squat while typing on my laptop or working with my clients, and people ask me if I am uncomfortable. I then tell them that I am actually quite comfortable in my squat position, more comfortable than sitting in a chair. My answer almost always surprises people. Why do many people think that squat is only for younger people, and not ideal for older people? Why is it that many older people including my parents and my wife's parents (Japanese) and others in many Asian countries and other countries can squat comfortably? Should older people avoid squatting? When should we stop squatting? Questions go on and on and on.
"Use it or lose it". Just like sitting on the floor, squatting requires more fuller joint range of motion than sitting in a chair/couch. It is not so much about being in a squat position that is beneficial, but the act of getting in/out of a squat position is beneficial as you are moving all joints and muscles through much greater range. And, as you use this position for many functional activities such as watching TV, reading a book, using a computer, eating, etc, you'll be moving more frequently, which is a real secret for keeping our body strong, mobile, and healthy.
    What is Asian Squat?
It is a full squat with feet flat on the ground, buttocks all the way down near heels or touching them. A common position used by people in many Asian countries while talking, eating, other activities.
    What are benefits?
    1) Keeps joints healthy and mobile
    2) Keeps muscles strong and flexible
    3) Helps with digestive system
    4) May help with posture
*The ability to get up from the floor is corrected with mortality rate. The research shows that people who struggle to get up from the floor or not able to do have higher mortality rate as compared to people who are able to get up from the floor easily.
    How to practice and improve:
    1) Incorporate Asian Squat in daily activities such as reading a book, eating a meal, watching a TV, etc.
    2) Start small and increase gradually

My Chinese student’s mom told me to do this squat for my period cramps and it does help! It also lengthened my spine. I was so sedentary during 2020 that my body was extremely tight. This squat fixed my back and neck issues better than the physical therapist and chiropractor! Thanks!

My family lived in Seoul for a few years when I was a kid… I’m in my 30s today back in America and I can’t count the number of times I’ve absentmindedly done an “Asian squat” while waiting in whatever line or standing around (I hate waiting in line and I hate standing still) when it’s necessary. It’s been happening more and more as I get older 😆 People look at me like I’m a crazy person or get worried I’m sick. Standing is for suckers. It’s all about the squat, bb!

LOL Like you, Lorelei, I use this squat often, at home when washing floors, gardening, sorting, etc, but time to time have used it in public and it seems that Canadians react much as you describe, thinking there's something 'wrong' with me. But, I'm 55 and have been diagnosed with arthritis and degenerative disc disease, so it helps relieve back pain and stretches my muscles. which I want and need. So, I ignore other's reactions and just do it : )

This video has quite literally liberated me from constant pain. I have suffered chronic lower back pain for at least 15 years. I have been practicing this technique for the past 2-3 months, just 2-3 minutes in the morning, and it's like a miracle for my particular condition, I'm now pretty much pain free in the lower back region.
Thanks so much for putting this on here. And I'm so pleased l found your tuition.

I am on day 24 of the 30/30 day squat challenge (30 days 30 minutes squatting) I have my feet flat on on the floor, but I need to hold on to something otherwise I imediately fall backwards. That hasn’t changed a single bit in 24 days. Only thing I notice is that I can sit more or less like demonstrated in the video, but not without holding on to something, a table in my case. I was expecting to feel some progress there, but unfortunately that is not the case. I am wondering if I should just be patient or I should change the practise

I had stopped using this position in public and around non-Asians. My coworkers and some friends always made fun of me. It is actually a relaxing position for me when I’m tired of standing, have nowhere to sit, or when I’m doing something low to the ground. Surprisingly, I did not know it was hard for people to perform until watching this video and reading the comments! I am glad it turns out this position has some health benefits. I hope everyone trying it succeeds and finds it naturally comfortable.

My dad lived in Pennsylvania all his life, born in 1920. He was 6’ tall and very skinny, but powerful. I recall him squatting when at our camp house in the woods, around the fire with his brothers, just relaxing. It’s one of my beautiful memories of him. They had wonderful woven carry baskets about the size of suitcases, and when laid flat, there was a hinged back that raised, with leather straps to keep it from going too far. They had flat mats inside for some comfort, a chair without legs. I’ve always disliked regular chairs and couches, sitting on anything that I can just rest the sit (sp?) bones, but not the hamstrings. My favorite is a low carpeted turret for a cat, eating at a low table. I’ve wondered if squatting strains the knees. We’re warned not to let the knee joint go out further than the toes when exercising (squats and lunges).
Thanks. Glad I’ve found your channel today. 🙏

Squat is sometimes viewed negatively. But it is a fairly normal fundamental movement that has been used by people of all ages. The idea about knees shouldnt go past toes during squat or lunge is very strange, and is often applied without any functional contexts.

I'm in Malaysia and have a squat toilet. I still struggled to get my heels down but I do feel the benefits in digestion, elimination, and when relaxing on a low stool to do tasks in my garden. I tried using wedges under my heels but it didn't feel right. Now I'm going to use books under my butt and use it more often while watching YT videos. I feel my spine popping and lengthening when I squat and it has helped heal a sciatic nerve problem I had.👍😁Great Videos

We can do our next generation a favor by installing Asian style toilets. Get them trained to use this toilet from the very beginning. This is all they need. Plus it is very sanitary. I am Asian and it comes to us so naturally because this is how we grew up. Unfortunately, it is becoming rare in our countries also as people look down on this position and relate it to something that only poor people do. I am glad that western countries are starting to promote deep squat.

I'm 65 years old, retired, and living in Japan. My achilles, knees, hips, and back are trashed from a lifetime of running and skiing. But I still do those things and I can easily use the Asian squat any time I want. I do have to be a little careful about my left knee, but I have complete range of motion. I can't do it long enough to eat a meal, but I can hang out in it for 10-15 minutes no problem. I can sit seiza too, but that gets painful in my left knee sooner and sometimes I get cramps in my feet. My biggest problem is my hips and lower back. If I try to sit cross legged in a Japanese restaurant to eat, my IT bands pull on my knees and it gets very painful very quickly. Trying to sit in the Lotus position is comical. I can't even get close to getting one leg crossed over the other and I tip over backwards when I try. I've had this issue my entire life so I want to say I'm not anatomically capable. But maybe I just haven't found the right techniques and mobilizations to achieve it. Excellent video, thank you!

I'm 6'4" with a 36" inside leg. Leg length has nothing to do with it because I can do it easily.
It's actually about where your muscles are attached at the joints. Wirey/slender framed people are often much stronger than they look because their muscles are longer, whereas people who look muscular have shorter muscles.
So if you have the longer style there is less muscle in the way to impede full movement. It just happens that westerners are more prone to have the short muscles, meaning they struggle to squat.

We were able to squat as a toddler but we lost this range of motion when we were told to sit! As a result we started reducing our maximum range and over time we lose the squatting posture.
With consistent stretching, i have seen people gain back their squat and it also has lots of health benefits especially for the digestive system.

Really enjoyed the video. Have been to S. Korea 10 times and noticed this a lot. I had Achilles surgery and spinal fusion over the last 10 years and and believe this can continue to help my flexibility.
