      greetings. if you would be interested in hearing some more different sounding audio from some of these games, check out some of the jank turbografx-16 conversions a lot of people were doing at the time with many nes games. there is actually multiple conversions of the first mario, with different results in each. some of their conversions totally just have broken or horrendous audio, but some actually have an interesting different sound. contra, megaman, castlevania, and many others were converted to the tg16 at the time too in several third world countries and stuff. it was just an easy thing to do due to similarities in the hardware i guess.

      Nope, I remembered it perfectly, according to how it sounded on a NA NES console. I think it sounds better on an objective basis as a classically trained vocalist. The Famiclones sound tinny, at least with this game, but probably many others. it is obvious it is mono sound whereas the authentic version sounds fuller and could almost be mistaken for stereo.
      You may feel nostalgia for hearing it wrong but that doesn't change the fact that's not how the artist intended it.
      You missed another possible solution - using a microcontroller like an Arduino to swap duty cycles. Seems like it would be a lot simpler than a ROM hack if you're talking about truly fixing the bug. Or you could just go get a real NES.
      Also, you didn't dig deep enough to get to the real answer. Was this done deliberately or was UMC just that incompetent?

    as for the actual soundtrack, I had no idea! I found it curious that the sound effects in particular sounded so close to how they’d appear in New Super Mario Bros., as if they’d heard themselves what Famiclones sounded like and used those instead of the more hollow 50% duty cycles. This is fascinating, I didn't know that cloned consoles had altered music because of the way it read the chips, but for you to then explain it in a way that makes sense was next level! I like how it sounds in 12.5%, it reminds me of what Nintendo did in Super Mario Maker 2, where they made an Athletic theme for SMB1, and used the 12.5% sound.
    To me, I compare the sounds to where you strum the strings on a guitar: closest to neck = 50%, middle = 25%, and closest to bridge = 12.5%.

    • @chirinea
      @chirinea  9 месяцев назад +3

    Honestly despite being an American who grew up with the "official" sound palette, I really do prefer the clone sound. It's more crisp and has more personality. Koji Kondo was a brand new composer at the time and hadn't really figured out how to shift duty cycles for different timbres, and it's entirely possible he would have used the 25% duty cycle at least part of the time if he had the expertise that he developed over the next few years.

    • @chirinea
      @chirinea  10 месяцев назад +17

      I'm pretty sure he knew how to manipulate the duty cycles, as the underwater theme uses the 12,5% duty cycle at the very start of each note to make some sort of "pluck" effect. Also, some sound effects use different duty cycles.I guess it was a deliberate choice to use the 50% in all songs.

    • @releasethebogus8581
      @releasethebogus8581 10 месяцев назад +8

      chirinea is right, Koji Kondo really knew what he was doing. It's also worth noting that SMB wasn't his first work, I believe that was either Devil World or Punch-Out (just from listening to them, I think he did Devil World first) which both preceded SMB by one year. I do also like the clone sound though! I think what Kondo was trying to do was mimick a woodblock, whereas the 25% duty cycle sounds a bit more like a trumpet, which, vindicating the famiclones, is often used as the lead for more modern renditions of the theme.

      Well technically neither the nes or the clones had a dedicated sound chip, the sound was integrated in the CPU based on the MOS 6502 UMC. UMC implemented that same design from MOS But when reverse enginering the sound system, made a mistake in interpreting the register for the pitch.
      Fun fact: the CPU Ricoh designed for Nintendo contains cloned technology itself. Ricoh deliberately made a modification in the MOS 6502 design to avoid copyright issues. (so maybe UMC also swapped the 2 duty cycles deliberately, but then i would have chosen the 25 and 75% duty cycles)

      Interesting, for me it was the opposite. I grew up playing on a Famiclone, never saw or knew how an original console was until adulthood. A cousin of mine had a famiclone model that looked like the original NES in design, so the first time I saw an actual NES I thought "the original NES looks just like a !".
      Probably nostalgia or pure individual preference, but the higher pitched famiclone version of Super Mario Bros sounds more pleasurable and energetic to my ears, hahaha.
      I never knew there was a difference in how the sounds were played, but now I am fascinated by it and want to know more about it too -- original or famiclones.

    I thought you gonna tell about the game speed difference on PAL and NTSC versions, which also sound differently - much more differently than in this video. At some point I realised that I had been playing NES on a "low speed" all my childhood and it was very unusual to play my favourite games on the correct speed years later.

    I like both versions for different reasons. The original is the original, and the duty cycle-swapped-version adds in more overtones that make the harmony between the two pulse channels much more prominent.

    I grown up on Dendy. I don't really remember which sound it played on SMB, but various cartridges with various versions like flying Mario could have different sounds. Distinctively remember level complete music could with different notes. Then I remember getting some strange keyboard like NES, which had entirely different problem with music. Like in Batman's first and forth level's music you could hear constant pausing, when it should play a long note. Kinda ruined the experience for me, but I had no other option to play, so I had to endure it.

    I used to have this glitchy Pal cartridge of Mortal Kombat II on an official snes back in the day
    Originally it belonged to one of my brother's friends what it would do on the first go of putting the game in is all the audio would be staticky sounding and refuse to load after the title screen after one reset the game would miraculously work
    But sometimes when the game would load the games entire soundtrack would sound completely different almost remixed, I don't know if this is just one of those things that Midway did at the time or if it had anything to do with the glitch but till this day I haven't been able to find any trace of that different version of MK II's snes soundtrack anywhere

      Lol, to be completely fair, I should've streched the image a bit because emulators tend to display square pixels by default, but that's not how it looks on a real CRT TV (which is 4:3). Just compare with the footage from my console at the end of the video.
      But yes, I hate when those games are displayed in 16:9.

    So I was a little lost at first trying to understand the region thingy until it was only applied to the clones.
    However as a good Brazilian my console had a bit of a Jerry rig to it, there was a cut on the shell on top to make it a top loader system like an SNES.
    My father had it done on a electronics shop in town because the original loading mechanism was stuck idk.

    • @chirinea
      @chirinea  10 месяцев назад +1

      Lol, that's right, it happens just like that. And for the most part the channel that is interrupted is the second pulse wave, as most sound effects uses it.

  • @hai1touch
    @hai1touch 9 месяцев назад

    TL;DR: Many Famiclones have a flaw in the sound chip where the 50% pulse wave and 25% pulse wave are swapped. So if you grew up playing on a Famiclone, you may remember the music and sound effects sounding different from an original Famicom or NES.
