In fact, today, a great number of undergrads do not even get their four year degree until six years after they begin, not because they are working their way through college, but because federal guaranteed loans means that they are able to pay for the extra two years of having fun with loans instead of earned money, meaning their student loan debt starts out half again as large as it need to be even if the student did not work before and after they began college!

Rep. Scott keeps changing the subject from the cost of tuition to the cost of going to college. I worked for a major southern university, and I saw how student loans make it possible for students to have a college experience much more expensive than their families would otherwise be able to afford. They could rent an off-campus apartment instead of sharing a dorm room with a roommate. This required a car for getting back and forth. They ate in restaurants instead of using college-provided on-campus food services. Some were able to take advantage of "educational" foreign travel. And boy, were they able to party!
Exactly! My niece and her husband did exactly this!. Paid for their wedding, took a two-week honeymoon to Europe and a vacation to Costa Rica, plus paid off his car loan with their government subsidy loans. I didn't go to college. Why should I pay their loans off with my tax dollars?

In fact, today, a great number of undergrads do not even get their four year degree until six years after they begin, not because they are working their way through college, but because federal guaranteed loans means that they are able to pay for the extra two years of having fun with loans instead of earned money, meaning their student loan debt starts out half again as large as it need to be even if the student did not work before and after they began college!

Perhaps we should require two years of work or military service before college, so that these 'kids' can mature a bit before making all these adult decisions! But what ever we do, we should hold them accountable for their choices, because college IS a choice, just like the choice made by those who went into the trades, who get married, who have children, who do any adult thing once they turn 18!
@@sortathesame8701 ???? Are you okay? LOL
A) anyone who graduates highschool and immediately enrolls in college (like nearly everyone does) is still considered and even treated like a child LOL.

C) This ABSOLUTELY shouldn’t be allowed.

What about the family that saved the money to pay for their kids education?

I moved out on my own at age 18. I paid my way through college and after graduating debt-free from college I purchased my first home and paid cash for it one year later. It’s not really hard. You just simply have to do work to get anything accomplished.

@@thetest8777That's because Obama Bin Laden decided to make students land guaranteed and that caused the cost of student loan and to skyrocket.
Thank you, Mr. Roy for speaking out.
I signed all the paperwork for my student loans. I also PAID my loans off myself. I was always taught to honor contracts that you are involved in. These people have NO right to have ME pay for THEIR loan(s).
I get furious every time this topic comes up. Are college students adults or not? If not, don't give them loans. They are not responsible for their actions. If they are adults, then they are expected to make responsible decisions concerning whether or not they can afford a college education. Not everyone has to go to college to make a living. Oh yeah, I joined the military and later used the GI Bill to help pay for my college education.
Student Loan Forgiveness is a tax subsidy. Just like that GI Bill you were given.
@313 Velo, If it was just like the GI bill, student loan borrowers would have had to trade 2-4 years of service for their education. It’s not even close to the same thing

Ow so the government tries to help and the college decides to hike the price now they get tax payer subsidies! Just evil as evil can be.
I was a single mom, that at 31 years went to college and got a degree in Computer Science. I got student loans. It took me 10 years to pay them back after I started working at 35. Let them pay their own loans back!

I lost my husband while going to school and raising 4 kids. I continued to go to college, have worked for 16 years at my job and I am still paying my student loans. It was worth it for me. I will be done in 4 more years.
Yes it’s a lot but my main complaint is the interest rates they charge. I believe in hard work not hand outs.
"Destroying the work ethic of the country" hit the nail on the head. How sad to do that to people 😞. I as well paid my 68k debts for my education and could not further it because financially was unattainable at that point and remaines that way to today. I bet you went to school more than a decade ago
@@EastBayHustler Doesn't matter when they went to college. If you took out a student loan, YOU are obligated to repay it, not US citizens who did not even go to college! Someone can go to college with very little to no debt if you wish. It requires working before and during your college years, choosing a less expensive college (most likely getting a better education!), taking college courses during high school, taking an extra course per semester. It requires living with several other students to reduce housing cost, it includes visiting a food bank or two in order to save the cost of borrowing while you are in school. It requires getting a four year degree in four years, instead of today's popular six years. No one needs to come out of college with your undergrad degree with debt...just do your homework and understand what those loans mean! No! On school loan forgiveness. American people say NO.
I served in the US Army to get money from the GI Bill to go to college. I worked the summers, and was a part time student and part time worker towards the end and graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and I had zero debts upon graduation. Should look into why colleges cost so much money for ho hum degrees. My computer fees were 2 times what the Liberal Arts students were paying and they spent more times playing games on them. My time in college took longer too as I had a service connected issue that the VA now denies it was service connected. I encountered former hippie professors who hated Vets and yet somehow I got thru and I don't owe anyone anything.
The cost of education has skyrocketed for the same reason the cost of housing has skyrocketed: government subsidies + loans that allow people without money to bid up goods = unbounded price increases.
Add in the insane money printing policies our government has kept since 2008 and it's surprising the issue didn't come to a head sooner.
We have been printing money like comic books since it was removed from the gold standard, our entire financial system is a scheme built on debt and purchasing debt. It is and will fail 100% no matter how much money we print.
My suggestion is this committee invite Jordan Peterson in to answer the question as to why the cost of tertiary education has skyrocketed over the past decades.
I got a kid racking up college loans for a degree in a field where it's required. I'm the cosigner for her loans but she fully intends to pay them off herself and even she rejects this idea. I guess maybe because she's going into Accounting/Finance and knows this is not sustainable.

@@marcoslopez127 I dont think he was busting on you. The solution to the problem is that everyone pays their own bills. When that happens and there are no govt subsidies, the amount of free money headed to the schools will decrease. To keep students, schools will HAVE to cut costs to compete with other schools and that will bring the cost down to an affordable level. There are no situations where a personal debt should be forgiven without consequences and certainly no reason to forgive a contract willingly entered into to improve ones life should be covered by a third party who had nothing to do with the contract, didnt have that opportunity, or lived up to their responsibilities.
Got my monthly mortgage bill and it just went up 46 dollars a month... that means I will pay about 16,800 dollars more for my home in the end because Old JoJo needs to pay off Ukraine
In case you don’t recall, uncle Joe wanted nothing to do with Ukraine until they significantly pushed back against Russia’s (Putin’s) aggression when the plagiarist in chief and the rest of the world thought it was just gonna be a cakewalk and Russia would take over the Ukraine. Just like his pull-out from Afghanistan which was treasonous in my humble opinion, and he should have been impeached for that alone, he has been wrong on every single Geo political issue for the past 30 years. He is beyond stupid when it be comes to preserving our democracy and preserving western values throughout the world.
Some People don’t realize the significance of Putin taking over the Ukraine. Look at history and look at the psychology of people like Vladimir Putin. Do you think he’s gonna stop with Ukraine? He will then go after the Baltic states and further his meddling in the Balkans.
I really don’t understand anybody’s opposition to us supporting the Ukraine. This is a test of how willing the West is motivated to stand up for its values and it’s hegemony.
Autocratic regimes throughout the world are on the rise and have been for a number of years. If we capitulate to Putin in the Ukraine and to China in Taiwan we are going to find ourselves pretty isolated down the road. To complete the thought… it does nothing to lower the cost of education. But, by forgiving those loans the cost will skyrocket. Thus, limit access 🤦🏼♀️ To be honest, perhaps ‘higher’ education is not the best choice for our children. Going to college for the sake of going to college helps no one accept the government and a few pocket books. Most of our higher learning institutions are solely indoctrination mills.
