    The shuddering breath is very interesting. I imported a stallion years ago that had obviously been abused with a whip. He had been a paddock stallion running with his herd before coming to Australia and had no idea about yielding any part of his body. I grabbed a dressage whip to point to his hip to ask him to yield, and he shrank from 15 hands to about 12 and was shaking like a leaf. I threw the whip away, burst into tears and told him he would never be hurt again. Then I impersonated the mother horse nicker that mares make to greet their new foals. Pen did exactly the breath you described several times as he straightened up and yawned and blinked for ages, then fell asleep. It's not a reaction that I hope to see again, as I believe it's probably trauma related.

    Thank you very much for sharing Sharon. Very well observed, great intuition. I tried your calming breath after a stressful incident with my pony Ella (she had been avoiding my attempts to get on a halter - for an hour!). Actually it was spontaneous as I was more stressed than the pony. Finally got it on and she was standing about 10 feet away. When she heard the sound she turned and stood looking straight at me for a couple of minutes which she never did before, Then walked up to me and touched my face gently with her muzzle. It was a lovely, peaceful moment. I was amazed. Then I watched this video and understood that it was the breath she was responding too. She understood I had been feeling stressed! She was OK😅 So now I have a strategy. Next day Ella was calmer than ever before so it seems it has a lasting effect. This means so much to me. Thank you again and very best wishes.

    You are blowing my mind! And you are also my new superhero! just bought your book and have read it through 2 times in the past 3 days. My daughter and I each own a rescue horse and have been amazed at how even the smallest overtures using your methods have made huge differences. I am a yoga therapist and use all of this information with my clients focusing on polyvagal theory, trauma release and downregulation of the nervous system. I am so grateful to have happened upon your book in the bookstore not even knowing something like it existed. This was definitely divine timing. Thank you thank you thank you for the beautiful heartfelt work that you do.

    I'd love to see you do this WITH a horse!!! I knew there was way more to their communication. Because of their sensitive nature it makes sense that even their breath is a main way of communicating their emotions. It helps us humans learn our deeper emotions too! Thank you for perfectly confirming what I couldn't quite put my finger on. I'm getting your book!! Amazing!

    It is definitely clearer to me as you describe AND make these sounds for us while explaining their messages. I appreciate the significance of the breaths of a horse so much more now after watching this video. Thanks for putting it out there like this. Small bits of the crucial parts of Horse Speak is so much more digestible this way #I'm licking and chewing now, LOL. How about one on connecting with an evasive horse in her paddock?

    • @SharonWilsie
      @SharonWilsie  4 года назад +1

      The best way to connect with an evasive horse is to stand sideways with your palm in the air. The gesture means both, "I won't pop your bubble" and " I want to connect at the edges of the bubble". You can say things out loud like, " I've got your back" or, " whenever you're ready" because these words make your micro gestures, breathing and heart rate align. Horses are Masters of micro gestures. Also removing all pressure with a low O posture helps. One little secret: smack your lips like you've got peanut butter in your mouth. Horses smack their lips when they release the soft palate and prepare to enjoy food. It says " I've got yummy food over here"... This normally changes the subject from "I want to touch you" to " I want to share something yummy with you."

    My horse often "sighs" when I groom her or when we are about to go and she just stands there and sighs wich sounds to me as she wants to say "man today we will ride again, I don't have any motivation for that" you know? xD but does this than just mean that she's relaxed?

    • @cassieyoung461
      @cassieyoung461 3 года назад +2

    What about a horse that instead of your hand wants to breath at your head or face? I know it can be dangerous so I try to avoid it but curious why one of my horses seems to prefer that

    • @SharonWilsie
      @SharonWilsie  4 года назад +2

      Hi there, yes some horses enjoy sniffing our scent. It can of course be unsafe if the house is Young, or has poor boundaries. However, if it is a well known and trusted horse it seems to sometimes be ok. In Horse Speak teachings, healthy boundaries come first. I usually only allow such contact for a brief moment, then redirect them to how I feel more comfortable.
