This guy treats his mowers better than I treat myself
I am the same way
Go to Lowes or Home Depot and by a remanence of kitchen top formica. Try to get a 3X3 or 4X4 sheet. I use it under my mowers and cars when changing oil. No bleed through and you just wipe off the spills. Store it for the next oil change.
Rick Anderson
Not a bad idea but not recycling one Amazon cardboard box a year works for me.
It doesn't work for me anymore. Now that I have grandkids that drive and have motorized toys. I end up doing many more oil changes than once a year.
Rick Anderson
Gotcha, permanent oil change spot in the shed/garage.
Recycle an old shower curtain. Wipes up so easy and stores in a small bag.
A shower curtain can melt from contact with hot oil. It may work if you drain your oil when cold but then again that is not the proper way to change oil
I got a B&S oil suction pump and it’s amazing!!! I service my 3 mowers multiple times a year and it makes life so much easier and ZERO mess nor the need to tip mowers plus it holds the oil too. Also allows you to see and inspect the oil afterwards. It’s a wise $35ish investment and you will love it!
Have a 17 year old Honda mower with the fill/drain spout even lower than on your Toro. It makes draining the oil even more difficult. I use a disposable low-profile (2") aluminum baking pan so I can actually get it partially under the mower so when I tilt it over, I don't spill a drop onto my driveway. Then I just transfer the oil to my recycle container.
I do the SeaFoam fuel process as well. What I have found to be most helpful preserving the fuel system is to time my mow to where I close the "Fuel-Shut-Off" at a specific point at the end of my mow so that it burns through all of the fuel by the time I get back over to my garage. This way there is little to no fuel left in the fuel-bowl/carb to linger and potentially gum things up. It is especially useful during the winter months when I am not mowing nearly as much.
I also add about a cap full (not the spray can cap, the pour-type can) into the engine oil before the last mow before the oil change (about an hour). This is especially helpful since lawnmowers generally do not have oil filters. It is a function of SeaFoam to work in the oil to clean carbon deposits as well as the fuel system. They say it does not reduce the viscosity of the oil.
I also use Mobil-1 Synthetic. I used to use 10w-30 as you do but now that my Honda is over 17 years old and the tolerances are assuredly larger I use 10w-40. I too live in south Florida where I am mowing year-round and in high heat from May through October so the synthetic might only give me peace of mind, but I figure it can't hurt. I also add a cap full of "Bestline Engine Treatment" to the oil for good measure. Same goes for my other power equipment.
I like how you take pride in what you do even if it’s just a lawn mower 🤣👍🏼
I use a 5w-30 full synthetic in my mowers up here in Minnesota. 5w helps in spring, fall cold starts. Zero oil burn off, even in my 30 y/o mower. Saves money compared to buying "sae 30 mower oil."
Also use Iridium spark plugs for super easy starts and longer run times.
My drain plugs are under the motor, and I use 4 ammo cans to lift it.
Watching that oil change, holy smoke, I bought houses faster!
That’s a good thing that you’re using ethanol free gas. That is really good to use in any outdoor power equipment because it contains no ethanol, therefore it lasts a lot longer and won’t attract moisture as fast. Also, I use the same oil in my Exmark Radius, my Toro recycler, and I have to use dexos 5w-30 in my truck and Mobil 1 makes that.
You crack me up, I subbed, I just picked up one of these from an old man who didn't want it anymore cause the battery on the keystart died, and he can't use the pull rope cause of his age, he has a guy who does the lawn maintenance, and when he couldn't come the guy would mow it himself, so the time master was only used like 4 times since he bought it new, it doesn't have a scratch on it, the blades still have paint on them, and the underside is still shiny, and the tires still have nubs on them, it was covered in dust, all it needed was a good carb cleaning, oil change, which I agree with you, with the synthetic 10w30, I have run my own shop for years now, and have worked on small engines since I was 6, and I am 50 now so I know a few things, new battery, and a nice bath, it looks brand new, and the best part, he wanted it gone, his words, get it out of my sight, got it for his asking price... 50 bucks, it runs perfectly works great, and is the best mower I have ever owned, a lot of people knock this mower, it's because they don't know how to properly maintain a small engine, I can imagine how their cars are maintained, it's a great mower and your lawn is very nice, thanks for all the tips, and tricks and humor, looking forward to watching your videos tks keep em coming.
I live in a similar climate in Corpus Christi, TX with a LCN inspired Bermuda lawn. I mow year round. I have a fantastic Toro Super Recycler, as LCN endorsed in the past. Here’s what I do: change oil every 3 months with b&s strait 30, compression test, and sharpen blade. Every third oil change I also check and reset the valves. Checking the valves is really important and would be a great maintenance video. BTW I also only run non ethanol fuel treated with marine stabilizer and k100 year round.
Unless you are using your mower for commercial use, I think 3 oil changes a year is a bit obsessive IMO. But hey, it ain't gonna hurt it.
Also since you live in Florida And Temp on average is 90+ Degrees Fahrenheit I recommend jump up to a 15w-40 your mowers will love it run super smooth and stays cool
You should look into an oil extractor pump. Get a small one pretty cheap ($20-30) and all you have to do is shove a hose down the filler and not tip the mower over.
sounds like a lot of run too!!!
This is how the pros do it. No time for drain plugs!
I'm not sure the pump get all of the crap out of the bottom of the engine as well getting the engine hot and then tilting it over. The pump is definitely more convenient and neater.
Brian D. Part of the idea behind warming the engine up prior to dumping the oil is to keep all the “stuff” in suspension when the oil is changed. If it’s stuck to the bottom of the sump, then it’s likely to stay there no matter how you change the oil. The only thing to watch with the evacuators is some sumps have a raised area under the dipstick tube and you can’t quite reach the very bottom.
run?...sounds like a winner to me...
Allen, Worm oil flows better, but it also means that the settled dirt etc. that settles when the oil is cold is now in suspension from operating the engine to worm the oil and the draining now gets more contaminants out and the fresh oil stays cleaner longer with less wear particles in it..
I had my toro over 20 years. I did maybe 2 oil changed over the 20 years period, never need any seafoam treatment like that and still runs great.
I also agree on the non-ethanol gas. I use premium non-ethanol gas in all of my two and four cycle engines. I also add Briggs AFT fuel stabilizer and Marvel Mystery Oil to all of my 4 cycle gas (one ounce per gallon of AFT and MMO to each gallon). I add AFT (one ounce/GL) and Stihl Ultra two cycle oil (75 ML/GL) to the fuel for my two cycle stuff.
Get it warmed up, tip it on its side, tap it a little.
When do we learn how to change the mower's oil?
Savor it... this is the Lawn Care Nut. Savor it.
I find myself watching this today in its entirety. Despite the fact i have a riding mower, let alone a timemaster. As well as recent videos describing the shop vac technique. A true testament the mastery of your craft, sir.
Also not a bad idea to check dip stick on level ground. 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I just swapped over a 10hp, and keystart on mine nice to have keystart and pull start on it, and the 10hp is so much better then the 8.75hp.
I'm up North and I may go a little overboard with my winterizing. I detail clean, spray the undercarriage and blade with WD Silicone spray, and then I wax the outside. And it's just a plain Toro Recycler haha. Then I use Sta-Bil and run it through the lines. It's all just as satisfying as cleaning my guns :)
Hey big guy, just came across this video. Just wanted to say that your holding your oil bottle upside down when your filling your mower. If you keep the spout on the top then you wont have an air trap effect when your try to empty it. Which is really helpful when your trying to start your pour and not make a huge mess.
Always run synthetic oil in your small engines. They're air cooled and develop hot spots that break down the viscosity of the oil. I always run Shell T6 5w-40. I have verified thermal breakdown with conventional oil in my Toro with oil analysis by Blackstone Laboratories.
Mobile1 is good oil but I like and use Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30 in all of my four cycle engines. Some folks say that small engines will use 10W-30 oil at a faster clip than the standard SAE 30W oil, but I have not found that to be the case. Last year I ran my 5KW generator for 24 hours, as an operation test, and the oil level on its 11.5HP engine was the same at the end of the test as it had been at the beginning of the test and it was over 90+ degrees, outside, during most of the test. The only thing it consumed was gas - about 12 gallons.
Rather than holding the drain pan in one hand while trying to tip and control the mower with the other, push a piece of clear flexible tubing about 6" long into the oil fill hole. The outside diameter of the tubing must be large enough so it fits very snug inside the hole and will not fall out or leak. Just push it in far enough so it seals against the inside of the hole. This allows you to keep both hands on the mower with the drain pan on the ground and out from under the mower while you tip it. Once the oil flow slows down, pull out the tube and let the remaining oil drain. Lowes and HD sell clear flexible tubing in a variety of sizes. 7/8" O.D. tubing works perfectly on my B&S 6.5 HP.
Always pre plan! I live by the 5 P's..... Preplanning and Preparation, Prevents Pisspoor Performance!!
Hey lawncarenut, you may find a mityvac fluid evacuator/extractor extremely helpful for these fluid changes! They sell the syringe style or the pump style (hand pump or pneumatic style). Really good products! I work in automotive 👍🏻
Mityvac**
I’ve never seen a more complicated oil change on a lawn mower before lol. I changed mine in about 5 minutes.
Save yourself time, and go to harbor freight tools, and get the oil extractor, it's 150 bucks.... Cheaper if you have a coupon, and that way you don't need to do all the driveway prep you do, just turn on the air compressor, hook up the tank, pressurize the tank, extract the oil, and refill no fuzz no muss.
Mobil 1 Synthetic will outlive you. Period. That stuff is rock solid. 10w30 is a perfectly fine choice for a mower.
I use it in all my cars, 100k+ miles, 20k+ oil change interval.
Bulletproof.
B&S recommends 15W50 Synthetic in that engine now for commercial applications. They recommend their Vanguard line of oils. I use Mobil 1 15W50 instead
Toro manual recommends 10w-30 synthetic.
That is a horrible idea
Your car will die soon enough
I know this is an old video, but, Briggs & Stratton makes an oil extractor, it’s about 25 bucks. AutoZone sells a device that can pull oil out, and it works great for this engine, I have the same engine on my John Deere JS 46, and it fits that tube perfectly fine to get all of the oil out. It cost seven bucks.
Great video as always Brotha! Wishing you, the Mrs. and your entire family a safe, peaceful and joyous Holiday.
The Project Farm channel verified Mobil 1 is among the best synthetic oils. Amazon's synthetic oil brand also does very well for folks on a budget. I use dish washing detergent to clean up the inevitable spills that happen on driveways and pavement.
Good vid, get yourself an oil extraction pump.. They work great.
Um im pretty sure all toro lawn mowers have a drain bolt at the bottom kinda like a car
Nope.
@@wb2194 well both mine do
I use Mobil 1 10W-30 in my stuff too. It's good because I've been able to get two years without an oil change (not recommended). Loving the small engine videos!
LCN,next time you are at the Home Depot look for a product/tool called the Liquid Vac it pulls oil out with air. I have one and it works great on all small engines. And there is no mess
All the comments here and NO ONE mentioned using an oil extraction/vacuum/sucker thing to get the oil out!
And yes, there should be a plug under the deck so you can just run the mower up on ramps, or put it up on a lift, or even drive it down to Jiffy Lube. So much easier.
+ChuckD59 no plug. 89 comments contain words about oil suction pumps and the like. You're welcome :)
(I knew that, my sarcasm fails me again. Got those bring-out-the-snowblower blues)
How about use the drain plug under mower, towards the back of motor, 1/2” socket extension not that darn hard.
I mean he did not know so
Sometimes that bolt may be rusted and sometimes it leaks oil on belts and makes them slip
I’d love to, but I haven’t seen where it is. The instruction manual says to do it the way the video does it. The store I bought it from 12 months ago says there’s no drain plug. Is there a diagram or picture or drawing of where the drain plug is? I’d like to try that method if there really is a drain plug
That new throw'er down logo is great. Should totally make its way into sticker form.
put the left rear wheel on a brick and tip the handle to the vertical and tip the mower back. you can leave it draining and go for a brew.
Wintertime is a good time for Star Tron fuel stabilizer if you not using ethanol free gas. I have ran it in every small motor i have owned and never had a gas problem.
When you had it on its side and "preplanned" why didn't you just take the oil cap off at that point?
I use a boat topsider. Add Seafoam in oil run to "Warm" and drain.
Mobil 1 10w30 is excellent for mowers and small engines in general. Up here in Michigan I run 0w30 Mobil 1 because we get some low temps. With 0w30 I can run it in my snowblower and lawnmower. Also 0w30 has a higher quality base stock and I can usually grab it for the same price.
Your a life saver. . Just purchased a duplex in Connecticut and my first Toro Timemaster as well. It’s a beast!
I have mower serviced yearly. That's it.... fifteen year old mower and going strong.
And I had a mower that I never changed the oil in for 15 years went strong until the self propelled parts broke but the engine still worked same with my snow blower I haven’t changed the oil in 15 years and it still runs great the oil is black as can be but ah what’s the worst
Using full synthetic like a boss..... Mr H. Layin down the law (n)
I used Mobil 1 on my Toro personal pace and I switched back to non syn 30w because my mower started smoking blue when I would shut it off. Back to straight 30w cheap stuff and it stopped smoking. But just found your channel they IG and I’m becoming obsessive w my lawn here in MA so I’ll follow! 😎👍🏼 and you could get one of those white fluid Vacs and just suck the oil out of the dipstick tube. I do it every year. But on most Briggs there is a drain plug on the bottom under the deck. Not sure about this model. My personal pace has one but I just opt to suck it out the dipstick.
Great video, loved the exaggeration with the tips. I have the same oil drain pan as you do and hate it, glad it worked for small engines, because it sure does not work for a Car or Truck, oil does not drain fast enough and goes everywhere. Keep the video's coming.
most important part of the whole tutorial. don't forget to point the exhaust directly at your beautiful white Audi
Hane! Everything I own gets the Mobil 1... Lawn mower, Tractor, Pickup and car...
Man I miss this mower Allyn!!
Sea foam from my understanding you want it as hot as u can get the motor before seafoam so when u do spray it in and let it die off the seafoam sits in the piston in a steam type state. Steam cleans. Then run it to chase out the impurities. I’m not a mechanic either ...2€
The best oil for small engines is shell rotella t6.
Hey Allyn Hane the non ethanol is at select gas stations has that now here up north
I knew you wouldn't let me down. It was getting late on sunday, but I still believed i'd get my video.
i got you bro
i just run the gas out for the winter lol tractor 14 years old never a issue lawn mowers 8 years old but i just cut 9 grasses my elderly neighbors
I have a small pump that will suck the oil out but unfortunately too many mowers have no drain plug
This may have already been mentioned here but next time do the sea foam spray decarbon and stall out/hot soak, also add a couple ounces of sea foam to the old oil and run it for 10 min then change the old oil.
Awesome video! Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but I check my oil when my mower is on a flat surface like the garage. Your driveway has a pretty decent pitch and could give you a incorrect oil reading.IMO
Home Handyman magazine just did a write-up on the Briggs & Stratton 5430K Oil & Fluid Extractor Pump. Have not tried it, just tossing that out there because I do intend to look into it.
Hane, for content could you go on a grand LCN tour around the country visiting other lawn nuts, suppliers, growers and even talk with some Botanists. Get an interview with a prominent sporting arena's groundsmen. Grow test patches of different kinds of grass and compare contrast. Do a story on your background in the lawn fert and amendments industry. That's a cool story that you would reference from time to time in the past but do a dedicated vid on it. Find a patch of turf in poor shape somewhere on public grounds and show your skillz in resurrecting it.
Allyn, consider picking up a fluid extractor. Available on Amazon for about $60 and they make oil changes on small engines trivial. I find uses for mine all of the. Change Yo Life type of tool.
I like when you pull the spark plug wire! Safety first, good job.
if you don't change direct it will cause ruts.. maybe not so bad with a push mower.. I use a zero turn and don't cut the same way
I would have added blocks under the wheels as you tilted it over to get some height under the oil pan.
J D
What video did you watch?
Apparently you didn’t want the video because that’s exactly what he did!
You will never get all the oil out of a lawnmower. My Snapper manual says it holds 18-20 ounces of oil, but I seldom am able to get 15 ounces of new oil in it after I change the oil. Instead of bricks, I use a slope, of which I have plenty, to tilt my lawnmower when I change the oil. I like Pennzoil Platinum 10w-30 but Mobile1 is just as good. I buy it in the 5 quart jug and use it in all of my four cycle equipment.
Bro there is a drain plug on the bottom. I put mine on jack stands.
What about a one way pump to suck the old oil out 9 bucks at walmart. No threat of a mess! Great video, thanks for what you do sir!
Just changed my oil thanks.
What a nice video mister The Lawn Care Nut
Question. Does he ever get around to changing the oil in this video?
Next up, Allen Hayne, the lawn care nut, tries out the Masport Rotola for perfect stripes (without resorting to a reel setup)!
Great channel. No idea how you have time to do all this but glad you do... Thanks…
Thank you LCN. I’ve leaned so much from your videos. Happy Holidays!
Winterize doesn’t exist when you use 100LL or ethanol free. It has like a 2-5 year shelf life👍🏻
Lay'r Down!!! Hey LCN, thanks for the vid. It'll be nice when I change my oil in my new Toro Recycler II. All prior mowers had the drain plug in the bottom of the crankcase.
They do have drain plug under mower.
Have you ever thought of using a mityvac fluid extractor. Way easier and cleaner.
Hi, I live in Texas. I have a dumb question. When do you stop watering the grass for winter? I love your grass. Thanks
There’s a wawa in FL I did not know they made it that far south I am in central N.J. I will be in FL next week good to know.
You can overdue sea foam too much and it will eat your fuel lines. Check it out on teryl fixes all.
I don't use it continually, only as a treatment about twice a year.
Best oil for an engine is new oil. Old oil works ok but could damage the engine. As for brand it really doesn’t matter much these days since they have to all meet minimum specs.
Adding that to my notes. Thanks.
I've been binge watching your videos a lot lately. The following is just my opinion. You should really consider a nice pocket knife? I notice you use a box cutter quite a bit. Its getting the job done for sure. You just seem like you would benefit from a nice Benchmade or Kershaw.
I'm new to The Lawn Care Nut, but not to engines. I'm a recently retired mechanic, over 51 years i've worked on everything from small engines to tractor trailers (ASE master certified). The worst thing you can do is not change oil; the second worst thing is use additives like Seafood. It is garbage, and it will shorten the life of your engine. TORO demands 5W-30 synthetic.
idea for a video. How to repair rut damage do to jackaases deciding to use your lawn to turn around on.
Are you going to do the annual Christmas light installation video this year at the new homestead?
yes!!!!!!! Dad is here this week so I may force him to help lol
AWESOME!!!! WE look forward to your Christmas extravaganza!
I should change the oil in my sr4 super recycler but I do that at begin of the lawn season I live in Ohio and I run lawn care like Jake the lawn kid booth of you are good examples and nice vid
Collin Williams
It's better to change the oil in the fall so the dirty, contaminated oil isn't sitting in it all winter. Boat owners with expensive engines agree.
Any tips on watering for our southern winter? I've dialed mine back to 1/2 inch a week so far.
Dude you should scrape the bottom of the deck underneath to get all the crap off before you refill the oil also sharpen the blade and then refill the oil and run it
LOL pulling the spark wire.... there is NO WAY that mower suddenly on its own will turn its flywheel, turning the crankshaft, turning the piston with the magnetic coupling generating a spark to fire the plug and repeat.. Physics would have to be visited if it did.
Allyn, next time use some compressed air or air compressor to clean your air filter. Good vid. Have a good thanksgiving
Noticed you don't use the foam prefilter on your pleated air filter. I use it and it makes my air filter last much longer. Is there a reason you don't use this?
Toro oil comes in a 20oz bottle, makes it a lot simpler.
Mobil1 is my favorite oil for all things engine related. I’d drink it if it weren’t so expensive.
Dmonkey
Gotta be on par with price of Starbucks.
aguyandhiscomputer that’s probably true actually
My father would accuse you of making a big production, just to change the oil. Great job sir, thanks for sharing.
Hi Allyn. You've got a great channel and I enjoy the content you post. This is off topic from the video, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are on humate? I saw varying opinions of it online saying it's most effective in old lawns vs already groomed lawns, whereas others suggest you should apply some every year. Anyways could be worth doing a video about it. See you in the lawn.
Allyn, do you realize what I had to do between videos? I had to watch rank amateurs mowing their lawns! Please don’t leave me hanging so long between videos! And BTW I love the music with the southern rock vibe! Get working on that next video!!!!
i love you.
I concur! So funny along with informative. Who cares if it’s not all about the lawn.
The Lawn Care Nut we are men enough to have a bromance! Lol
Seriously though you have turned a mundane chore into something I am passionate about . You have a gift and I am glad that you share it with us!
Why not just pull the dipstick out AFTER you lean the mower over? Then you don't have to do the move the pan gyrations.
Just bought a TimeMaster today. Toro said to use 18 fluid ounces ( which is what comes with the mower) you’re saying to use 20?? Just wondering if I should go out and buy some more or wait till first oil change.
Can you use mobile 1 10W-30 oil in a snowblower?
I believe so the w stands for winter
