After a really solid rookie pro season stepping onto the Crunch blue line and, as its youngest defenseman, looking like he belonged last year, Thompson has taken another step forward this season in a bigger role, earning his NHL debut along the way. He had a big year two years ago, leading all OHL defensemen in goals with 21 and finishing sixth in points with 57 (in 65 games) before closing out his junior career with another six goals and 14 points in just nine playoff games, as well as four points and a plus-10 rating in seven games for a gold medal-winning Team Canada at the summer world juniors. Sure if it turns out to be a top 5 pick overall in the draft it's a descent chance to land a franchise altering player but those types of picks are never traded.. Remember, a late 1st round pick has roughly the same value as an early 2nd round pick. My one concern with this Hurricanes team is their lack of production from their 2C. To sustain any kind of success, the Canes should consider either moving Necas back to center and getting him a RW, or making a move for a 2C. Jack Drury's 26 points in 61 games leave something to be desired.
as a pens fan, not happy about the conditions on the picks. i was expecting morrow to be in the trade, nikishin was a long shot, but overall im just disappointed
Well im rooting hard for the Canes to win the Cup now 😂 The Pens NEED quantity over quality. One late 1st round pick isn't enough to right the ship. They need youth up and down the organization. And there's an outside chance they still end up getting the 1st anyways. Solid return I think.
Pono is a talent that can play for the pens right now. Was excellent in his call up this season and on any other team he’d be playing already in the nhl. Kids a talent, with a hard work mentality. Pens are gonna love pono.
Wish you the best Jake, I was hoping for multiple prospects in return & hope they hit on at least on of them. Bunting brings some much needed chippyness. Heartbroken but hopeful.
Pens fan. i'm okay with this it;s better than noting have him walking in free agency and i would rather have quantity over quality considering how many picks we have and the prospect pool, would i rather just get the first round pick or have accepted New York's deal yeah but ill take it
I feel like it would have been a fair trade without the addition of either Panomarev OR Koivunen. It would have given the Pens, who should be gearing up for a rebuild let's be honest, a solid current player and a great future. Ponomarev and Koivunen included is going to bite the Hurricanes in the back down the line.
As a pens fan my reaction is: meh. I like bunting, but I don't know how he'll work in Sullivan's system. Most of the prospects seem decent, but Dubas said earlier in the season he was looking for quality over quantity and didn't really stick to that today. I think this season is probably a throw away for the Pens at this point, I'll probably be reluctantly rooting for the Canes this year in the playoffs, for Jake and for those draft picks.
I feel alright about the return. Everyone crying about it on twitter is pretty dumb tbh, we need any prospects we can get and there are more moves to be made, plus if we keep losing, we get the first rounder back from the Karlsson trade
Pens fan - Definitely a light-ish return because Dubas either needed a top prospect or a guaranteed first, and he got neither. Whether it’s his fault or the markets, this is a mild failure. Also for a beloved player, this feels mid.
As a pens fan: our season is over, so why not try to get something out of it. Our core is aging, so why not get younger. And there is a good chance Guentzel could sign back in the offseason. Now… the conditions on the picks SUCK ASS, and I’m not crazy about Ty smith being included as I don’t feel the pens gave him a fair shot. I would rather of seen POJ go.
Pens fan. Not happy. We heard this whole time about teams "aggressively" pursuing Jake. That implies a better offer was turned down so that Dubas could get his boy Bunting. I realize it's all the same on July 1st so I'm not crying over what's lost here, but I'm REAL disappointed about what potentially could have been. Let's just be honest- none of these 3 guys are going to play more than 20 games for the Penguins, unless you're talking about the Baby Penguins.
Considering that everyone knew that the Pens couldn't resign Jake, I feel it is a pretty solid return...without the picks. Dubas had zero leverage in this trade, and got three young prospects who are about a point per game where they are currently playing. With today's loss, the Pens are, officially, in a draft lottery position with the tenth worst record in the league. Macklin Celebrini....here we come.
I’m a pens fan and we all knew Jake had to go. The return isn’t great but it’s something. I doubt Carolina will keep Jake so you could always try to get him back😂. In all seriousness nobody else seemed to be biting so Carolina had him by the balls and Dubas just got what he could. Pens are younger and can now root for the canes in the playoffs
L move by the pens. as a fan i like the players they got. i was looking at the stats of the prospects and where they were drafted and im not mad at it. but we shouldve got a guaranteed 1st rounder. its possible dubas go into the off-season without a 1st rounder at all, and thats just gonna put salt in the wound thats already them missing the playoffs for the 2nd straight year. dark times are ahead for sure
*SARCASM* Great asset management, three C-level prospects that will likely never play in the NHL, a guy in Michael Bunting who will be waived next year along with two inconsequential draft picks. As a Penguins fan, I'm ashamed with how this team was constructed on Dubas' watch.
As a Pens fan, I think the return is a tad underwhelming, but I still think its really fair, contrary to the public's opinion! Guentzy was likely not resigning in the offseason, and we couldnt afford to lose him for nothing. We added a bunch of solid prospects to our weak pool, the condition on the 1st is what makes this trade worse than it could've been, its a risk. However, I am content, and I think Dubas, given the though situation he was in, made out fairly well. It could've of course been better, but it could've been much worse too.
As a pens fan bunting better produce how he did in Toronto or it’s just total garbage of a trade. There’s a good chance none of those prospects or picks work out at all. Thought he wanted quality then went total opposite direction. Would rather just have guentzel than this junk.
Awful trade for Pittsburgh. This couldn’t be all you get and if Carolina doesn’t win the cup you get a second!!???? wtf is Dubis doing. This is where the inexperience shows
Very little return. The 1st should be guaranteed. Only hope is to sign him as ufa in summer. Dubas miss on this trade. Non the less probably still better then what hextall would off done! So win win go penz
So the Pens could have signed Bunting as a UFA last offseason and passed, only to trade their best winger for him within the division? Sounds stupid. F Dubas, he trades for a "Leaf". Simply sign Jake Guentzel instead of this garbage. Instead of picking up an A prospect Dubas gets 3 B level prospect and gives up Ty Smith. More players instead of a good player. Instead of a 1st round pick Dubas gets a 2nd. PENS = FLEECED! Remember Dubas traded for Reilly Smith instead of signing UFA Bunting over summer. YIKES!
dubas is the worst gm. didnt even get a first round pick for jake. these prospects were not even first rounders. lucius was a 4th round pick. just embarassing. dubas is awful

Guentzel plays with Crosby. Can he produce in yoffs without?
As a pens fan my reaction is: meh.
I like bunting, but I don't know how he'll work in Sullivan's system.
Most of the prospects seem decent, but Dubas said earlier in the season he was looking for quality over quantity and didn't really stick to that today.
I think this season is probably a throw away for the Pens at this point, I'll probably be reluctantly rooting for the Canes this year in the playoffs, for Jake and for those draft picks.
Did Montreal possibly get more for Ben Chariot then Pittsburgh got for Jake Guentzel😭
I think the return was pretty uninspiring without getting Morrow or Nikishin.
I would have rather kept him then give him up for this he should have gotten bunting there 1st and both there 2nds
I wouldn’t be surprised as a personal decision guentzel after July 1 resigns in Pittsburgh just to retire with them
It’s not too bad for Guentzel, but I wish it was a guaranteed first
Bunting with sid could be gross
Yeah, he was a pretty solid finisher, in Toronto, with Matthews and Marner.
Goo Ong to be a cranky GM end of year party
The Penguins are a mess right now. Is Dubas even doing a good job this season?
im dead inside...
Buck up camper.
I literally know jack lol, played form,y local triple A team. I’m glad he went to a team that he can get a real shot to play
That return for pit is very very underwhelming imo like not even getting a first in return?!!?
i wonder how crosby is feeling about that trade
L move by the pens. as a fan i like the players they got. i was looking at the stats of the prospects and where they were drafted and im not mad at it. but we shouldve got a guaranteed 1st rounder. its possible dubas go into the off-season without a 1st rounder at all, and thats just gonna put salt in the wound thats already them missing the playoffs for the 2nd straight year. dark times are ahead for sure
Go Canes!
Ohhhmyyyyyyyy
Hi everyone from a vegas fan
Please do Sid a favor and trade him, Mr. Dubas
sid don't wanna leave Pittsburgh. this city is like home for him now
Now just gotta get a different coach. Sully system is stale but won't happen
sell away the future in Pittsburgh Kyle
Jake is 30… did Sid make him we will see…
fleece fleece fleece
Pens got fleeced
I want to die that’s how I feel we got fleeced
ONLY WAY WE WIN THIS TRADE IS IF JAKE RESIGNS WITH THE PENS THIS SUMMER.
Pens W tbh
YIKES!
I have been a fan for over 7 years, this was a terrible trade not even a gurenteed first
I HATE THIS TRADE AHHHHHHHHH PITTSBURGH GOT FLEECED
This just looked like a rebuild trade from the Pens side
dubas is the worst gm. didnt even get a first round pick for jake. these prospects were not even first rounders. lucius was a 4th round pick. just embarassing. dubas is awful
Thought he'd be a Red Wing.
Its just sad and a lil underwhelming
dont love it
The condition ruins the trade. Dubas is the most overrated gm ever.
