- Silence is a rare commodity these days. There's traffic, construction, air-conditioning, your neighbor's lawnmower ... and all this unwanted sound can have a surprising impact on your health, says noise researcher Mathias Basner. Discover the science behind how noise affects your health and sleep -- and how you can get more of the benefits of the sound of silence.

Beau Hanney that was actually really funny! Lol🤪
I feel blessed I'm sitting next to the great Beau Henney rn
Thank you for speaking up about this important topic. It's high time we stopped sacrificing our health in order to accommodate the noise terrorists. Noise cancellation should become a central part of any building project and we need regulations which protect people's right to live without being constantly exposed to health-degrading levels of noise. As the speaker expressed it, it's most effective to regulate noise at the source, so that's obviously what we should do.
I wish my neighbor would listen to this...
100% agree! So Much noise, i feel like I'm always in seach for quiet space even when im at home with my roomate...
I went to see a hearing doctor a month ago and there was a guy waiting in line, so I asked him if he was there to see the doctor too. He was like, 'what?'. I repeated my question and he said 'yeah, I'm waiting too'. And then I was like 'what?' :D
"You became the very thing you swore to.. ask"
To me it seems like the majority of people are becoming oblivious to unnecessary sounds. They don't seem to mind anymore. Mowing the law on sunday, loud phone calls in the office, bringing loudspeakers to the beach, construction sites that go on during the weekends. When I tried headphones in the office I was seen as strange and unreachable. This gave me stress as well as it feels bad to be frawned upon. It seems a change in cultural mindset is needed. But I do not have too much hope to be honest :). Have a great day everyone!
Suggestions for improving sound environment start at 7:00

I have slept with a sound machine since I was a baby. I’m 19 now. During periods of my childhood I slept with a sound machine app, always with the setting as “tropical rainforest with thunderstorms”.
Pls make a law to ban music from work places, i have to listen to the same songs over and over again for the rest of my life, i pretty sure its destroyed my mental health.
One of my old bosses probably thinks the same thing ... I remember at one company I worked for, every Monday morning, 7 am, the work week on the factory floor would begin with the bells that start the AC DC album, Back in Black, followed by the album cover to cover.
And I have no regrets. The CNC tabletop router I was operating was still louder than the music, and if I have to choose between the 2, I would take the AC DC any day of the week.
Music over a tannoy I agree with but I have noise cancelling headphones that I need for work. My line of work requires concentration and the right environment for it but they have us sat next to a very noisy call center area. I can have by headphones playing low volume music so as to block out the rabble from the call center.
I’m an RN and I work in a major metropolitan level 1 trauma center/emergency department every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The amount of noise is staggering and comes in the form of constant telephones ringing, paging, monitor alarms, yelling/screaming/crying, ambulances, police officers, paranoid schizophrenics, vomiting, coughing, etc. The best therapy is to spend copious amounts of time on my mountain bike in the forest by myself, where I’m truly happy. I really hate noise.
MOUNTAIN BIKING IS THE BEST THERAPY!!! LET'S RIDE SOMETIME BROTHER
One thing that was very interesting for me to learn is that at first, after living with background noise, it was very scary to be in full silence. I got anxiety a lot but tried to teach myself to do it anyway because I believe that spending certain amounts of time in a quiet spot each week is good for our health. It took me 2 and a half, actually almost 3 years, but now, for the most part, I crave silence as relaxation and tranquility, and when the noise goes off, like a power outage or we turn everything off, my body doesn’t get anxious anymore. It just calms down and I get so happy. I seek silence now. I think learning to relax and quiet down is a skill and an art in itself, and if we devote practice to it, we can get really good. And it will benefit our health!
*Neighbors dogs that never stop barking at all or random hours every day and night*
Have you tried to talk with your neighbor about it?
The dogs where I live set each other off because they can all hear each other really well. Their voices bounce off the mountains amplifying their conversations.
I'm hoping to train them all with ultrasonic frequencies. If it doesn't work, I'll throw them new toys and pray I don't have to talk to their owners
i can't afford it but maybe u can google this (anti loitering device)
Edit: it's illegal in some place and you can DIY it
That’s a HUMAN problem. Poor dogs. People suck.
Negligent people are the cause, sadly. Dogs managed by responsible people don't constantly bark all night or day.
This is why I wish the USA had stronger regulations against this nonsense. All that neglect is cruel to the dog + everyone else. We need some form of licensing in place. By that, I mean that anyone wanting to get a dog should be required to get a dog license. You would have to pass a knowledge test and understand local regulations. I would go even further to require an annual vet check. It's too easy for anybody to get a dog. That harms the dogs + as I said, creates problems for everybody else.
Noise can drive a person crazy. I worry about the young people who listens music right from earphones extremely loud.
Achieving silence and a happy home is unrealistic when you have neighbors. I've put myself through so much stress trying to sustain silence. These days I use loud brown noise to achieve peace and sanity.
"Loud brown noise" = rap? Lol
@@peggyharris3815 Loud brown noise = "The Brown Sound" from South Park. 😊
@@annie4150 I researched it. Lol. Thanks for the education.
I hope it works for you.😂
"Achieving silence and a happy home is unrealistic when you have neighbors" - Nothing is more true than this
People don’t give a care and are stupid. I chased down the mail girl .hers was so loud she couldn’t hear me honking behind her.
As a guy with tinnitus, I appreciate this video. Not enough people are educated hearing loss and it’s sad.. neither was I until I got tinnitus. Should be taught in highschool
as a person attending school, noise pollution is being taught at my school so yayy!!
@@sketchbook_worm I'm happy to hear it :)!
I have tinnitus so I use background noise. Otherwise I hear eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee all the time. But I don't know if it's damage from noise or from the copious amounts of NSAIDs I've had to take all my life. I hear those can cause tinnitus, though I don't know how. If that's really true, I think that's what did it.
This is a very important lecture for our current times where mental health has never been this popular of a topic. Let's hope people don't think it's too far-fetched to link noise to the detrimental health effects in our lives
My architecture office specializes in acoustics and I too preach tthe importance of noice effects on our health. Thank you for your message I will share.
Definitely sharing this at work.
Good timing of this video. After a year of bad sleep because my upstair neighbours had a baby and put it in the bedroom just above mine, therefore waking me up several times per night, I realised they were on vacation this week cause I didn't ear a sound for a few days. But I thought I was paranoid when I heard a new baby, different cry though. And then I put my ear on the wall, and yes, my neighbours (same street, other building, don't know how they look like, never heard them before) just had a baby. And there goes another year of sleep, probably gonna have a breakdown now, bye. #damnbabiesareloud
Auds St Year of bad sleep? You measured the duration of your sleep accurately? How do you do this? You seem to be a doctor of a person. Would love to be as smart as you.
I’m with you, sleep is important and should be peaceful/fulfilling to the highest potential one can seriously fully reach, because my sleeping is unfulfilled and unhealthy time to really sleep like a mummy.
I especially love when people drive down the road blasting bass from their speakers. That's my f a v o r i t e.
Yep, Im the guy who cannot study at all when someone besides me making even a little noise, and on this situation i well get very angry about the noise resources. This is the reason why i seldom go to library to study (there is always someone whispering or physically making noises). I wonder it's me too sensitive or someone else is the same?
I can completely agree with all of this. I'm still going to add that conditioning for optimal comfort may not be the greatest solution, ultimately, through our time and in our future.
Thank you for this nice video as I agree 100% with all thoughts. Even most of us ignore, if you are dealing with NVH or sound engineering or once you start to pay attention, this really starts to annoy you. It`s ok during the day to have a noisy environment as there is not much thing to do, but show a little respect at night! Especially, noisy cars and motorcycles must be banned from the traffic at night!
Silence is Golden and Speech is Silver
Super interesting topic! Great talk, thank you Mathias.
my neighbors need to watch this
There's also low frequency sounds that can make you nauseous or your heart race - even if we cannot hear them they can still be felt because all sound is vibration.
The Philippines is very bad for loud uncontrolled noise especially in and around baranggays where inconsiderate people play extremely loud so called music nearly on a 24/7 time scale....this loud music accompanied with dogs barking non stop also.....children and elderly are deprived of their sleep and sanity.....this is all over the Philippines and I often wonder why there is no law against it.....as I know that this loud noise is and has caused a tremendous amount of hearing and learning problems amongst young children. Silence is golden.
What's incridible is that so many morons here on Earth, seem to have trouble hearing.
They should be forced to a hearing specialist, and forced to wear hearing aid.
Noise pollution is a serious issue
please help raise awareness on the damage that dogs that bark incessantly can have on human health. im miserable because of being exposed to this for around three years. we need laws against this and we need owners who do nothing to stop it go to jail and lose their dogs. if they arent being trained to behave or being properly taken care of, they must go to someone who can provide the education and environment a dog needs to not destroy the health of neighbors. this cant be tolerated anymore. we need to talk about the types of noises that invade our houses. sometimes we just cant escape from the noise. thats the worst type of noise pollution. if its outside and its stay there, it wont affet those inside. so we have to talk about the ones that do affect us even inside our houses, that were supposed to be safe places from all of this noise.
Yes, it's unfair to you and really, to the dogs, too.
Listen to this on full volume
I've always felt this to be the case, i can't stand noise. Whenever i listen to anything it's always at a lower volume as it seems to irritate me.
Before seeing this I turned the master switch off my home for an hour and the silence was Absolutely Fucking Amazing. I'm going to do this more often.
His concert example is far worse when it's people right next door and you alone seem to be the victim of their attitudes.
This is why I wear a noise canceling headphone to and from work and literally whenever I leave my house. I live in a big city and I need to protect my hearing.
Only problem is: you need to remain alert to dangers walking down the street.
All stress inducing elements (including noise) are very bad for your health.
Awesome information, thank you!
Just listening to this I realised I'm breathing too loud, sorry. Kind regards, Darth Vader
Thank you sir for an educational intelligent presentation that didn't put me in a bad mood
Man I always had a theory that urban noises(like high freq oscillations causing anxiety, many noises overlapping confusing, etc) vs natural would be stressful and overbearing and would have an impact on health. Cool to see
Noise is among the most significant location factors that affects the value of residential property, one reason it ranks so high is because noise isn’t just simply bothersome. It’s become a public health issue
Tell this to my neighbor
Thanks for this nice information.
I won't talk to anyone until they mute the TV or radio. It makes life so much nicer.
You must be fun at road trips
@Swae Ocean I think you're right. Most can carry on 7 conversations while doing their job or playing video games.
@@jannefin LMAO!!
My mom has to turn it down in order to hear me. That's because she has $1,000 hearing aids but doesn't wear them. At least TVs have captions.
Thanks for validating my noise cancelling headphones
I've had Tinnitus since I was a baby and I had to be accepted and go through a Special Class at the Local University, which is one of the best ones anywhere near where I live.
In this Special class, they taught the few of us that were accepted into it (literally not even a dozen kids and teens were accepted!) We were taught to deal with our Tinnitus by using Sound! It IS still something I use to this day, because no matter what, if I'm not listening to something either by using music or the tv on I deal with such horrid Tinnitus that it makes me literally sick. So yes--- Some noise and music is actually okay! It all depends on how loud, or if you're deaf or mostly deaf, then by all means, enjoy it as loud as its needed to attempt to block out Tinnitus, because it's one thing not many people can handle at all.
Most of the small Class at the University couldn't handle it sadly 😢😢😢 I can't blame them, but I miss them so much! They were amazing!!!!!
Pink noise can help.
Totally agree with this man
Go placidly amid the noiseand the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
What Ever love Desiderata ☺️
We have no more peace and quiet. If we find peace and quiet we destroy that moment with our phones..
You can also develop symptoms of schizophrenia, ie. Hearing voices, as your auditory processing becomes confused from a lack of peace. Also, tinnitus. (I have had and still have both myself, and cat miaowing also doesn't help!.. Alarm systems seem to have little biological sensitivity these days too.) Apparently there is a reduction of dysbindin in specialised glia in the brain during auditory hallucinations so messages cannot transfer in the usual way. It makes sense as fatty acids in the brain become damaged from stress, affecting memory and concentration. If you take omega three supplements, and get enough rest (basic access to silence, with 8 hours sleep) and hydration, you can help your fatty acids repair, and your CNS cope with basic mental processing again.
Water animals also have no peace. Our energy lines at seabed keep a constant low sound increasing their stress level.
Currently watching this while a construction site next to my home jackhammers relentlessly for 10 hours a day at 75db. Ottawa has absolutely garbage noise regulation.
Very important topic!
Don't forget, you can intentionally use low-amplitude sources of noise to decrease the apparent volume jumps in unwanted sounds. It doesn't have to drown it out, and it can reduce the stressful effect of high-attack, high-amplitude (comparatively) noise. You can use music, or as many have suggested, your color choice of noise. I like music (no MC's and not a lot of lyrics) because the "watchtower" sense is muted to some degree. Rule of thumb: Just fill the space that you're in with a very-low conversational volume.
You want low noise? Don’t have kids is the best preventive measure to noises that cause high levels of stress.
Yes! I'm not saying that I don't like kids, I just don't like it when parents can't find a way to make their kids stop whinning.
@@frogwithapickaxe8910 Well, I can tell that you don't have kids.
LOL!
You can always be annoyed by other people's noisy kids...
Great talk, wish these ideas would get laws passed though.
Maybe tax on too much noise🤔 especially when it’s coming from humans
This is a reason why more people are getting affected by hearing loss and tinnitus these days..
WHAT?????
Can you type that LOUDER?
Barking Dogs.
Your neighbor has to "warm-up" his diesel truck and it's not cold out.
Train whistles.
Its hopeless
You must live on my street lol . My ding dong neighbor starts his truck and leaves it run even when it's not cold and his screaming wife is just crazy . I have a train track in front and back .I'm trying to find another place to move to far in the country
@Amanda Anderson ha tried that a long time. Ago . Then they made more noise the boy said he's mother doesn't speak English the girls scream at the top of their lungs all summer. Mom yells at kids all the time
Dad gets into van then blasts the horn for everyone to come out. They just like to be noisy.
tl;dl
- study says noise bad
- avoid noise with obvious or for you impossible methods (i. e. get noise canceling headphones, move to a more quiet place)
Why are noise cancelling headphones impossible?
@@motherlove8366 that's the example for the obvious method :)
JigJason93 I know, but why are you saying it’s impossible?
Impossible is to make movies in the cinemas less noisy just by leaving the place or to stop airports functioning.
@@ZiemniakPospolity Sure but those are two extreme examples where the most danger is in everyday noise.
i was listening to music and it was loud and when i saw the notification i turned it down 😂
I am nearly deaf but can lipread fairly well. It does not take very long for me to become exhausted try to hold a conversation with a hearing person. After 5 or 10 minutes I have reached my limit and my brain just shuts down to sound and goes to a happier place. If there is any type of noise in the background the time limits are less. I am sure this is true of others like me.
Electric cars could lead to quiet cities and clean cities
Electric buses, trains, cabs, bikes would be a dream then.

Omg ... after watching this video , I am not able ignore the sounds I am around
2 decades living in front of a loud, echoey dorm.. I'm more than fed up...
I try to have at least 30 minutes of silence when I wake up and before bed.
No screens, cellphones, radio... Just me, my thoughts, and a Notebook.
In México, people listen some genres of music like"banda","grupero" or "norteño" extremely loud at night (around 10:00pm - 3:00am). Very disrespecful and they even get mad if you ask them to turn the volume down.
I'm in USA and my neighbors play that music . I've called police and that works for about a week
@@yolandahackler7559 Yeah, it's the same here. You call the police and it works a few days. Sadly, is a cultural thing and this issue happens frequently.
Very True
That’s not necessarily a “bad” thing. It’s just very difficult for you, but people should be at liberty to enjoy simple pleasures. Albeit, preferably not at other people’s expense, which does happen unfortunately.
From what I hear it sounds (puns not intended) like you’re not from Mexico. But from what I’ve heard this mentality is very common across Latin American cultures. I think it’s very reactionary because Latin American countries have many problems.
@@jamesdragonforce Im from Mexico. Like you said, there's nothing wrong with enjoy simple pleasures like that music, but being asleep and waken up at 3 or 4 am by your neighbor listening music in is car with his friends drinking, singing and screaming, every weekend... Not that enjoyable.
Is this a reupload or has this been posted on another Ted channel? I feel like I've seen/heard this video before.
What about white noise machine's (or just a running box fan's) effect on your biological sleep patterns? I always sleep with them because I'm too sensitive to sounds so it helps drown things out so I can fixate my hearing on something monotonis and constant to help me fall asleep.
I used them for 30 years and they definitely help. I have since developed hyperacusis and I wonder if that constant loud noise was a bad thing.
I totally agree!
I totally agree!!!
He is not saying anything that I do not already know. I suffer from a condition called misophonia. I already suffered from a heart attack in 2013 and I would say that part of what contributed to that was noise and lack of proper sleep. The suburbs where I have lived for 30 years has become almost as noisy as the city I grew up in. Much of this noise is from idiots who deliberately blast loud music in the their vehicles and have loud exhaust systems. Then there is the endless chorus of leaf blowers and the daily cascade of lawn services mowing lawns with huge industrial strength riding mowers. My desire is to move to an area where it is unlikely to developed, away from any main road, and with as few neighbors as possible. Nothing is ever going to be done about noise - nothing! The hospitals, doctors, and drugs companies don't want to protect people from heart disease because the make more money if people are sick and have high blood pressure.
Think about it! I am a realist. There is a lot of money to be made off of unhealthy people so don't count on the medical practitioners to help create a healthy world. The best strategy is to get as far away from the general population which is what I hope to do.
Muito bacana expor esse tema. Certamente, ainda é um mal que age no silêncio. Kkk paradoxal talvez
I like using noice canceling headphones without any music on.
Same
Isn't that noice? ;)
Do they work???
what about white noise?
a need to complete silence is just make things worse, it become its own anxiety that disturb sleep.
i use loud white noise from my max speed fan and air purifier. it help me sleep. im yet to aware whether these loud white noise could affect me in bad way.
Every 5 minutes passes in front of my house a boom car, that have only the stereo in working order, all the rest of the car may self dismantle at any moment.
I consider them fiscally irresponsible to pay money for a stereo in a car that should be repaired instead.
Important issue for all of us, but in Palms Springs??? Odd, I would have thought heat would be more of an issue...

I really dont know what to do. There is noise all over my apartment.. .im distracted. Driven demented. The only place is public psych ward and its completely........all noise
yeah, I've got tinnitus and it sucks
take care of your ears 🙏
Couple of suggestions... Have your teeth/jaw alignment checked. A bite that isn't properly aligned or a jawbone slightly out of alignment can also increase/affect tinnitus. Also ask your dentist if he sees any indications that you're grinding your teeth in your sleep. Third suggestion - reduction in the amount of refined sugar in your diet might help, too.
@@WWZenaDo thanks for the tip. Actually, the doctor said something was off with my jaws so I went to see an orthodontist today and she said my lower jaw is smaller and shorter than the upper one - so I have to figure out what to do about it.
I also noticed the ringing in my ears gets louder and higher in pitch when I open my mouth wide.
I also have tinnitus, have had it my whole life so I don't actually know what silence sounds like! I very recently went to the doctor and to my surprise my hearing's fine. I was so convinced I'd given myself tinnitus as a teen that I put off going for years. He talked about it being linked to anxiety and/or nerves misfiring, so t's not always because you've damaged your hearing. There's no cure though so that sucks.
I also used to have a small jaw and the operation to make it the right size made my tinnitus worse.
@@Toppu - Interesting. I hope they can help you with that, without intrusive surgery.
@@billie_the_birdie - I also have tinnitus - occasionally. I've observed anecdotally that when the conditions I first mentioned (jaw alignment, bite, sugar intake, stress and lack of sleep) are alleviated, the tinnitus decreases and sometimes goes away.

"Many of the activities that generate noise also generate revenue." In my case, it's a nearby church with a rock band and no respect for the community. Money generating churches with no tax responsibilities should never override taxpaying homeowners.
