a demo where someone actually plays and comes up with good melodies. it's a modern day miracle!
❤️
Ahahah indeed! Magnificient songs! You are amazing Cucko! 😁 Thanks for this Cucko!
My 8 year old daughter and I just watched this video and imagined the video game levels that this soundtrack would accompany. Here's what we came up with:
1: "The desert level." Slowly walking by everything dry and dead
2: "Running away from the boss in the castle"
3: "The cloud level"
4: Deep forest level, lots of beauty but also hidden menace. Some creature just on the periphery of your vision that disappears as soon as you look.
5: The ocean level. "Rowing your boat across the water, but watch out for a shark!"
6: "Final boss fight"
Woooow that's amazing! Let's make that game 🤣
🤍
I really enjoy the videos using just one synth to make songs. I prefer seeing someone getting more out of one piece of gear rather than seeing 10 pieces of gear being highly under utilized. You also seem to be really in the zone in this one, which is enjoyable to watch. The tunes are also rippin'.
❤️❤️❤️
THE ZONE!

This is pretty much the essence of dungeon synth and I love it. Mega likes
Dungeon Synth™ ❤️
that is actually his genre, good call!
@@milztempelrowski9281 you bet your balls it is ahahah
Alternate title: Cuckoo Makes An Entire Soundtrack In One Sitting, And It's Better Than Anything Most People Make In Their Entire Life.

I FINALLY got my MegaFM today! I'm beyond ecstatic! I got it working together with my Digitone, Volca sample for drums, and a Yamaha DX 21 (a 4op YM synth with Layering and split keys mode). With this setup I'm ready to make Genesis styled music for days! For years! For life! XD
This is the most I've been impressed by you. I love seeing you working the knobs and sliders to get just the right sound. You really know FM synthesis by heart. And these compositions you made, I want them all
Thank you so much master Link! 🙏🏼
The concept of making music just on one synth is excellent. I feel like you can focus your creative energy better when your options are limited and you have less cables to plug. Plus your songs are really great - relaxed and nice, and full of positive energy. Thank you for the great video. :-)
God bless that metallic Megadrive sound. So many good memories rising from their graves. Great track as always.
Love it! Proper retro sound, i sometimes turn on my megadrive just to listen to the music. Beautiful tones!
Like a "Bob Ross" making retro game music🙂...
My fav cuckoo vid thus far👍
This video is 8 hours too short.
🤣🤣🤣
I never comment any videos, but i have to admit this was 10/10 entertainment! the synth has a very unique sound and together with your soothing voice and the chill atmosphere... pure gold brother!
Thanks a million Carlo! I appreciate your kind words 🙏🏼
when I saw the ring on the table from the coffee mug I thought to myself, "do you respect wood?" in Larry David's voice lol.
I got myself one of these synths a while a go and so far never accomplished what you seem to pull off so easily.
Very impressed, nice work.
I think he was channeling game music. It’s important to have a theme for a starting point otherwise you will lack focus or direction.
I keep coming back to this video. It's amazing that noise in a synth can be so powerful and relaxing... I love it!
You can feel the joy in this man's heart when he talks about this thing
Looking into picking up one of these, and looking through playthroughs and tutorials. I love this video because the music and sounds are wonderful, but more importantly your joy in playing with these nostalgic sounds is infectious and very fun to listen to. FM forever!
I love how you conceptualized the whole process, I can see how much easier it must be to create music when you have such specific structures to work with. Really enjoyed this!
Btw I really loved the third song. I love the mellow tones!
Streets of Rage was my introduction to techno. I remember cos my friends older brother was a DJ in Detroit at the time and when we were playing it he said that's techno music.
I like the streets of rage. 3 yuzo and motohiro are monsters.
That last song gives me life! Love the fm organ sounds from that sega chip
Love this synth! Love the tunes! Love the artist!
The 5th one feels like perfect background music for a shop in a JRPG. Can picture myself browsing through potions to it.
very random thought but i think you are somewhat right ^^
The name of the game is 伝説のククさん: 山様のメモリアル- Legend of Cuckoo: Memorial of the Mountain’s Master
My brother just got me one of these and this video has me feeling so nostalgic! I can't wait to set it up and mess around. It's been a long time since I did any music production (since I got diagnosed with MS, pretty much) but MAN this sound, including the flaws of the chip, are just glorious to me.
Thanks for the video. Subscribed!
The sound of amazing game worlds where suddenly there is no “insert coin” and its in your living room
Absolutely love this, what that other person said about this sounding like dungeon synth is exactly right, that first track especially!
These sounds remind me so much of my old Yamaha PSS-170. It's a 2 oscillator FM preset synth from the 80s. I always loved messing around on it as a kid. I think I might still have it lying around somewhere, I've been craving it a lot lately.
Was going to comment almost the same thing. Sounds a lot like the PSS keyboards, albeit with much more control and more depth.
Behold the mad genius and his works.
I love this! Hey, you should make fans and followers submit fan art for 31 different stages/themes of this game and have Jamuary2021 be an audiovisual adventure through this world ❤️ I feel like I can see it already!
Sick editing! Love it!
I love everything about this, and bought one of these because these are all the sounds I chase on other synths but rarely find. Thanks for the share on this, think you'll post a bit more of a walkthrough or nah? The layout for the synth is straight forward really but would be cool to walk through it as Twisted Electron's guide leaves a bit to be desired.
this video inspired me to find one of these things and luckily i found the only one available on reverb excited to try it out
so it was YOU!
@@NikoNoxious :o
Great soundscapes. I spent hours playing sonic spinball at a friends, during my lysergic tymes. This was fun, thanks for the flashbacks!
I was so excited for this! So good.
This is so great. I love 4-op FM and your melodies are so eerie and nice. I've using my DX21 and VOPM for ages but I reckon I should save up for a MegaFM. Thank you Cuckoo.
Just ordered mine, can't wait! These jams and sounds are amazing
Probably my favorite video on your chanel. Il keep and keep watching it😅 Thank you Cuckoo! Much Love❤️
Truly amazing mindpower❤ 🔥 humbleness too ✨️
🙏🏼
I love that you embraced it for what it is and made songs that fully belong on a sega genesis
Good on ya for showcasing this amazing synth! Absolutely love mine. So expressive
I know it’s an old video but That second melody made me go buy this thank u cuckoo
I love the music you make and the joy this device brings you is palpable. You mentioned that the MegaFM has flaws. I was wondering if you could speak to that.
Thank you for sharing all that you do!
This rules dude! I would love to see even more videos like this. It's really cool to watch the process in action, and the music is tight as always 😄
I adore this One Synth format. Your Typhon video sealed the deal for me on getting that synth. 🤍
The track at the 12 minute mark is giving off some serious Studio Ghibli vibes. I LOVE it!
The MEGA fm must have a similar chip to the Yamaha PSS-480, they sound almost identical.
Thanks 🙏🏼 The MegaFM is based on the chip YM2612, which is a 4 operator, 6 voice synth. The PSS-480 I think is using a less advanced, but perhaps cleaner sounding YM7129 OPK2 chip with 2 operator FM sounds. They certainly come from the same “family”. Yamaha is probably the biggest manufacturer of FM synth chips. They made a LOT of FM synths. The DX7 probably being the most famous and successful one.
@@truecuckoo I love what you were able to do with that cool little FM box. I've had a DX7, DX21 and DX9. I got rid of all of them and kept the PSS-480, PSR-36 and an FB-01. I don't know why, but the gritty "toy keyboard" version of FM always sounds better to me.
man , i loved this video so much that i download reaktor 6 and i dont even know the difference between the modulitor and the other one
I’ve been using twisted electrons’ HapiNES and Therapkid. They have a great product lineup and cool vision. I wish they had a battery powered groovebox with an internal speaker!
love it love it. The songs brought back good childhood memories ❤️
The third track (31:52 for a quick reference) is so very good! I hope this game soundtrack becomes a collection of whole songs!
Very much getting a classic video game vibe from it. 👍
This was an EPIC musical journey. Was pleasantly surprised by the funk vibe on track 6, especially the jam session.
Each composition beautifully crafted blending each sound carefully with deliberate thought to create the achieved vibe.
Can imagine these in a retro 80s game or movie.
Gaming companies looking for this vibe need to take note and commission Cuckoo for their soundtracks.
Track 3 is beautiful. Man this chip is so versatile.
I actually love how Cuckoo’s t-shirt store doesn’t sell t-shirts. That’s very Cuckoo!
Really enjoyable thank you. The synth looks great I look forward to an in depth review.
This made me so happy
❤️
When you played track 1 back at around 13 minutes, the Ecco the Dolphin vibes were through the roof. I've already bought a volca fm after watching your tutorial, and now this is going in the future wishlist. I'd love to see a video, or even a series where you come up with the BGM for an extra level in various Mega Drive games.
the first track brought back some fond memories of playing strider!
Really hoping you're chosen to compose the next Ecco the dolphin game
first track you're working on sounds right out of ECCO the Dolphin, just bought this thing today, looking forward to it.
I would buy a P.O.-33 MEGA FM Synthpak if you made one ❤️
Yeah!! Good idea! I think this will be my new favourite source for sample packs!
@@truecuckoo Some Mega FM sample packs would be so awesome!! Keep us posted :) Loving the videos and the channel! Thanks.
9:47 I think Cuckoo has a future as a foley artist, lol. Great video! You are the only person I know of on YT that shares my fascination and love of the MegaDrive/Genesis sound chip in this particular context. I love how your personality comes out even in the demos you make.
Check the tracker + sound emulator called Deflemask, it completely emulates de Megadrive sound chip, plus other popular retro sound chips.

@@NAM999DnB Thanks for the links, will check these out.
Check out PC98, man. Many great fm tunes. Also check out FM Funk Maddness. You're not alone.
This was a super-fun video. I just got one of these. It was used but basically looks brand new. It is a lovely little synth. I was expecting it to be noisy based on Cuckoo and other's remarks, and it definitely has a low-fi fizz to it. I had a Sega Genesis with the Sega CD back in the day, though not a Megadrive. Phantasy Star anyone?
I ordered one yesterday. So excited!
The sounds and songs reminded me of painting with oil paint somehow. Like a thick messy layer of paint
love this
That first one hit me right in the childhood feels, straight away!
That synthesizer sounds awesome. \m/ I have a Korg volca fm(inspired by your video on the synth) and it gots some killer sega genesis/mega drive type synths. That synth you’ve demoed has got some killer sounds too.
Yo this sounds amazing cuckoo, love the FM synth-e-sis
Succeeded wonderfully. Love this!
I stumbled across this video and just couldn't stop watching it
Love the fact u have worn the coating off the keybed
Made me laugh
Thanks for entertaining 😀
This was fun to watch, thanks! 🙏
Awesome video and amazing sounds! Truly a very talented musician. 😎
Love your Time Machine 😉⚡️
The first got me emotional
Cool stuff, just wanted to say thanks for your videos and keep up the good work.
Getting some Ecco the Dolphin vibes.
I wanna play that game damn it sounds so good
This is amazing!. Please follow up with us about the distortion issues.
now we just need someone to make the game! :)
I think the keys were first painted red and then black. And after years of playing the controller has now this layered reliced look.
Red was probably the primer for the black
Crazy good. If I could only use my eurorack cv to control this... It would be mental.
O MAN, the fourth composition
that's so awesome ❤
If Zelda was available on Mega Drive it would've sounded like the first song Cuckoo played.
So Phantasy Star 2..
Man you never fail to produce the best content 🙌
makes me think about OST of Kid Chameleon... marvellous !
Man. That’s lovely.
The Genesis/Megadrive left such an impression on me as a kid. I don’t care if some people think FM has harsh sounds. I’m all about it.
Old fm synths had harsh metallic sounds and mellow ones as we. The new ones don't sound that harsh, but you can get close to it. I really like the streets of rage 3 soundtrack.
@@chinossynthesizer705 absolutely. Yuzo Koshiro is awesome still!
Right in the feels. My childhood. :)
The MEGAfm seems incredibly fun. And that fist song was great my G.
Thank you so much for your incredible musical insight once again, this is the soundtrack to the best game yet to be made! Will we be seeing a tutorial on this great little machine?
The first track is wonderful! ❤️
You're awesome ! I love your videos
All I have to say is that you’re a bloody genius.
MASTER at work!
And a noisegate...I believe I can figure this out..sorry about all the virgin rambling Thanks for your creativity!!!
Number 3 is amazingly chill and cool 😎
Funny Yamaha will still make these. But then the Z80 cpu used as the controller is also still in production. It seems like a funny choice to leave in the 9bit DAC-resulting in the digital noise and distortion but I understand that decision too - keeping it lo-fi and accurate. But I’m also a bit perturbed. Perhaps a noise gate should have been incorporated.
It’s nice to see just how versatile the sounds are also now with 12 channels - it seems 6 is enough. But with 2 chips you get double. Also 3 lfo’s which I don’t think were used here. But overall an inspirational fm chip and having arps is nice.
You have such a cool sound to you. 😎
Loved this..
no.3 is pure heaven
