  • Just some random scenes from days in my life, dealing with running late, dealing with burnout, managing meltdowns as a grownup, starting an art project, honestly they might be out of order from the way I lived them but hopefully if you are autistic or have ADHD maybe you can share some tips that have helped you. Hope these random scenes from my life are relatable (or at least a bit entertaining).

    You have no idea how much the train moment made me happy. Honestly most RUclips videos would be vastly improved if they had a random shot of cool trains in the middle.

    This video was suggested by the RUclips algorithm and boy it’s spot on. I have broken down (crying not screaming) in the grocery store twice in my lifetime (50+ years). In the one the manager walked over and asked what was wrong and it was because they kept moving the food around and I couldn’t find anything. The manager was nice and kind and he said he’d stop moving the food and he did. I don’t recommend falling apart in a grocery aisle, but there are worse things and sometimes people are nice.
    Being autistic and with chronic illness is very hard. But I love your attitude.
    Your artwork looked interesting and I hope to see more in future videos. New subscriber for sure 😊.

    I completely understand the snack thing. I work in a grocery store and all I can tell anyone who meets this frusteration. Its not the people who work or even manage the stores fault, its the higher ups who make those random decisions. Trust me I freaking hate it too!

      I feel this, it’s not about having other options, we don’t want other options, we want the safe option that we already love! There are plenty of other things in life outside of our control that we have to be adaptable with. I think that’s what makes it such a thing when our favorites disappear, one of the few things we felt we could depend on have vanished.

    I've only recently discovered I was neurodivergent and everything suddenly made sense. My whole life was clear and my new perspective helped me understand why I struggle the way I do. Every time I've experienced severe burnout in the past I thought it was my fault and the way I dealt with it was trying it ignore it and I would keep pushing myself until I fell apart. I almost couldn't even take care of myself when I fell apart like that. Now I know why I was so stressed and I'm working on strategies to not fall apart next time.

    I really like this. Unfortunately, I work at a place that has a point system for being late, absences etc, so my ability to properly "preen" myself before getting to work isn't priority for them and isn't always possible. They prefer my actual body to be there, regardless of the condition I am in emotionally and mentally.

      I never understood that, to give every employee 10-15 minutes to get themselves settled for the day would increase productivity, I am certain of it. The days I don’t prep my mind for the day I am for less effective.

    I can definitely relate to how you were talking about dealing with things internally vs externally, and even with how struggling to manage that stress internally can flare up physical health symptoms. I totally get that. My own family doesn't get that about me. I need a certain amount of time in the morning to pull myself together. I need my routine. When I'm deviated for any reason, it throws me off. I've been diagnosed with ADD, but I suspect that I am also on the spectrum. Females tend to be undiagnosed. Love these more personal videos you've been doing.

    Those bunny ears are great! and this video was a lovely mix of calming and thought-provoking. i dont usually comment on things but your authenticity felt like a gift and i wanted to acknowledge that. the internal vs external meltdown seems like a valuable image/concept, i will be keeping that in mind; when i start to feel stressed, if it is not showing outside then its probably exploding inside! i guess that’s masking in a nutshell! oh and good luck with the art show:) there is so much rejection that one has to face as an artist putting themselves out there, it can be really tough/vulnerable. it is truly a brave thing to try, to persist as an artist!

    • @Eryykc
      @Eryykc  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you! I appreciate your kind words my friend 🥰. The masking thing, yes. The emotions are exploding one way or another, that’s what’s so dangerous about “sucking it up”. There are times when that’s what needs to be done, but never making space for your emotions can actually result in physical damage in the long run.

    Hi Eryykc! So glad YT suggested your video! My name is Bunny (so I immediately loved the ears!), 43, and also autistic (plus ADHD, OCD, and PDA) so I really relate to your video. Just last weekend I had a soft meltdown over not what getting what I wanted for lunch. I waited, and waited, and waited for the unreasonable emotions to chill out, but they would not, even after trying to take a nap for 3 hours and then having a bath. It ended with me eating tacos my husband made in my closet, somewhat in shame. Seriously, I was never meant for this adulting thing.

    Love the discussion on burnout. Being pretty high functioning, I always fall back to comparing myself to people who may or may not face the same challenges. It's something that's been a source of imposter syndrome for me. Besides compassion for myself, pacing has helped quite a bit. I'm usually either on or off, and when I'm on, I'll really push myself. Restraining myself from pushing so hard when I'm feeling productive seems to stave off burnout and result in less intense highs and lows productivity-wise.

    My meltdowns have always funneled into rage. For most of my 50+ years, it’s been a huge source of shame. While I got to where I generally wouldn’t direct it at people, it still felt so weak to have something stupid like needing to go to the other door at the shop send me into a rage.
    It’s only been in the last few months that I’ve come to understand the last event that occurred wasn’t actually the cause. There were a lot of things that led up, months worth, as I was always pushing myself to the edge of mental exhaustion because “I’m smart, so I can do a lot”. It’s been eye opening to gain an understanding about what is really going on in my brain.

    I read somewhere neurodivergence symptoms can be exacerbated by inflammation of bodily tissues that also impacts the brain and nervous system. Many common foods cause this. Not just chemicals and preservatives but ordinary natural foods like breads, grains, dairy, some nuts, anything that can cause allergic symptoms also causes inflammation which at it's core is an allergic response.

      I take issue with the term "nuerodivergent symptoms." It's not a disease that needs to be managed. It's a different way of interacting with the world. True, there are negative emotions that can be exacerbated by unhealthy diet/ lifestyle, but that's true of anybody.

    I work in a large retail store and come in contact with one or two thousand people a day, not all of whom are pleasant. The past few days, I have been experiencing burnout. But a clue: There has been major sunspot activity the past few days, and I am physically sensitive to that. I was worried, because my energy level has been low.
    I do like the bunny ears. I also like the various colors and styles of the customer's hair that I see.
    I have ADHD and probably other neurodivergencies I haven't been formally diagnosed with. I'm older than 65 so my ADHD can't be addressed because of the FDA, and I am allergic to clonidine patches, which worked wonderfully for anxiety and OCD around germs. The patches started itching terribly and leaving red marks that persisted for weeks after I removed them.

      Is it Clonidine you're allergic to or the latex in the patches? You should discuss that with your doctor. And if you are allergic to latex, it often also shows up as being allergic to strawberries and shellfish.

    True. I have to have my routine. If something goes wrong with it, I dont function properly. Everything has a knock on effect, throughout the day. Im off balance.
    Heres a really useful way I incorporate part of my routine into my work, which cushions me from being late, because Im not ready to leave the house. Breakfast at work! There's slightly more to it than where you eat though.
    I leave for work earlier than usual.
    I don't start my working day till Ive eaten breakfast, so I dont mind.
    I give myself a generous amount of time for breakfast, so Ive always got enough time to eat, even if Im running late.
    It's a little reward for getting my ass out the door and driving.
    It's one less thing to do before I need to leave.
    By the time Im at my place of work, Ive gotten up, out the door, basically Ive been moving around, instead of mooching around.
    I adopted it last year as I moved 3 times in 6 months (renting sucks) my routine was in freefall, I realised we had a canteen at work, and a shower, I incorporated morning breakfast, evening shower at work into my routine. It made a massive difference to my mood and productivity.
    I even carry on outdated routines, because it helps me maintain basic day to day activities.
    At my current place of work we have a kitchen, I was getting up heating a stainless flask, microwaving soup, pouring it into the flask and taking it to work for over 9mnths, before I realised, its crazy, we have a micro wave at work! but it all happened on auto pilot, as part of my routine. It was superfluous but it was non the less beneficial. I make soup for lunch for the whole week. I vary the green vegandd spices but the recipe is the same, it has all the food groups. I can make it blindfold, super quick. I dont have to think about it, so it takes no effort.

      If we're talking childhood trauma, Patrick Teahan is a therapist here on youtube who specializes in childhood trauma. See if any of his experiences or examples resonate with you.

    Can definitely relate to the loss of "comfort" foods being taken away. Restaurants just wait to see what I love so they can take it off the menu. And stores know my specific beloved coffee creamer, so they stop carrying it. I know it's on purpose. They see me pull up in the parking lot and push a secret button that takes it off the shelf. So unfair. It happens too consistently not to be true. 😉😆

    I used to make work for major commercial artists, I really like the concept of your artwork, go for it.
    I veiw art as something I make, that my unique and deep mind can see the value, Ill get pleasure from engaging with it, if I have the will to put it out there, others will get it too, maybe, but its already served a purose. Best of luck.

      It can be so hard to find a safe food .. when one is discontinued or changed sometimes it is actually quite difficult to get myself to eat anything else for a while until I Have To.
      I have been thinking a lot lately about the correlation between our shared Need for safe food and the commonality of digestive issues among autistic people.
      Not only does the flavor and texture and smell have to be just right to enjoy - but it also can’t make us ill by including trigger foods.
      Can be such a painful and expensive process of trial and error to experiment with food - imo it’s quite logical to want to cry about the loss.

      @@rainbo777 Maybe you can note down all things your favorite foods have in common so you can find more foods that check all the boxes.

      @@rainbo777Wow, that’s interesting. I believe I’m on the autism spectrum since I have had all of the symptoms of selective mutism and difficulties making eye contact. My mother would never take me anywhere to get help.
      I’ve developed serious digestive issues.
      😮 There is also a long list of unnatural chemicals and natural substances that my body cannot tolerate.

    What is neurodivergent?

    • @jellybonesnik
      @jellybonesnik Месяц назад +8

      it refers to someone whose brain works differently than most. People usually use this term in reference to autism or ADHD, but it can apply to other conditions/related things as well.

    • @babybirdhome
      @babybirdhome Месяц назад +6

      Another thing that might help you understand what neurodivergent means is if you know what the opposite is - neurotypical. Neurodivergent people are people whose brains are neurologically wired different from typical people’s brains. A neurodivergent brain physically perceives the world differently, experiences life differently, and thinks differently from most people, and this has a genetic or physiological/neurological difference. It’s not just that they’re “different”, it’s that they’re different because they have a brain that actually works differently, and this can show up in things like fMRI brain scans and other objective measurements.
