My wife and I visited Oradour in 2017. Walking the streets, and the cemetery left an everlasting impression and memory. I only wish every American high school student could visit Oradour and Normandy. Maybe, just maybe they would better appreciate and understand what freedom costs.

I visited this town in my mid-teens. There are no words to describe what it's like to walk there, standing where so many innocents were slaughtered.
A few months later my history teacher asked us to research some historical events, I asked him if I could do it on Oradour-Sur-Glane because I had been there recently and was bored with the idea of researching some local events from the Medieval ages. He agreed. I got all my points and it made him wanting to go visit there as well.

Today 76 years ago this happened. I visited this site twice, as a young boy not understanding the gravity of what happened here. And the second time when I was in my mid-twenties. Both my visits had an impact on me, my last visit being the biggest in my life. The story and history behind this town are something to contemplate.

These soldiers were animals, actually animals are much better. Even in Italy they did exactly the same things in a few different towns, not showing any mercy for children, women or pregnant women. I like the idea that this town was untouched and left the same way, so we won't forget ever.

Good video! I am though kind of suprised you didn't tell anything about why the Nazis whiped out Oradour. It would've been a nice addition to an already great video.
(for those who don't know why the Nazis did this, it was because a few Nazis were killed in a nearby town called Saint Junien. Some French resistance forces blew up a train bridge controlled by the Nazis. Commander Diekmann took revenge for the death of his soldiers. The revenge was the tragedy at Oradour-sur-Glanes)

It's also believed to be retribution for the d day landings which took place days earlier. German forces were cut off from Normandy as allied air superiority made it impossible for the German reinforcements to mobilize. This isn't a direct cause of the massacre of Oradour but their frustration of this and the resulting rise of French resistance are considered to be factors.

    • @ProspectFilmRoom
      @ProspectFilmRoom 4 года назад +5

I thought so as well, but it is correct. Das Reich was split up to form a strong battle group in Russia and the rest sent to France to be refit with 9000 or so replacements. The remnants of the battle group joined them later. Das Reich was an overstrength regiment that grew to a Panzer Division after Kursk. The 3rd and 4th Regiments were Panzer Grenadier; 3rd was "Deutschland" and 4th under Diekmann were "Der Fuhrer". So it was the 4th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment that committed this atrocity. -the French who were in the SS division which burned the village were not condemned,
-the "elites" of the village were enriched by using prisoners (Spaniards) as labor in the fields,
-the official French history did not mention the presence of a small handful of Jews in the Village & Spaniards...
a nightmare of propaganda, non says, no condemnation,
99.99% of French people who collaborated "for a new order" between 1940 and 1945 kept their real estate assets...
A real lesson to learn in war schools.

As far as I am aware: It was accurately reported by an American Raymond J Murphy. A B17 Navigator in his 20s who had survived being shot down over Avord. Murphy had witnessed the aftermath of the massacre (he was being cared for by the French resistance, probably at a neighboring village?) that the SS soldiers even crucified a baby. This, has sadly been confirmed as accurate. In 1953 a trial of the surviving 65 out of 200 SS soldiers only managed to find 21 guilty because Germany refused to extradite the rest. Confirmed as guilty or what? Just what I am discovering about this barbaric incident.

The horrible lie about Oradour. The truth is that the SS executed only the men of the village, because German soldiers were killed in Oradour.
The women and the children died in the church because of the explosion of the ammunition reserve in the church tower owned by the French resistance. This was proven by the analyze of the bones of the victims (and other proves). Their bones were broken (= explosion). If the victims would have been burned by the SS, the injuries would have been different and no broken bones. And other proves, like the church bell broken (= explosion and not melted, etc. ). The priest helped the local resistance accepting the ammunition to be hidden in the church tower. Unclear is still why the ammunition exploded.

The winners of the war claimed that there was no resistance forces in Oradour... But in fact, Oradour was the center of the local resistance and was targeted for that.
The old people in Oradour knew the truth. But of cause, they kept it secret (law of silence).
French historian Vincent Reynouard worked on the Oradour case for many years and published a lot of heavy documents and videos about it. Official history lie does all to hide the truth and the work of Reynouard was forbidden, experts and the Court refused even to discuss about his work and he was sentenced to prison in order to make him shut up. He still is in jail now. One of the French politic contemporary prisoners...
