These are some of the most helpful videos about compression out there. It's a shame it doesn't have more views. Thanks a lot, I am a budding engineer and this has helped me on so many levels to understand this technology.

***** Thanks for checking out the video. If you send me a private message, I can send you all the test signals.

Sad you didn't analyze what the "ALL" setting on the FET compressor does.

Hellooo. Great vid. I know that I still haven't understood this fully after several years. I think I understand the attack part of a compressor. And the threshold part. When the amplitude reaches the threshold it will be compressed at the given ratio. The baseline for the compression here is the threshold value. But how much will the compressor compress during the release time, after the signal has sunken below the threshold? Where is the baseline here, the threshold for the release time? Have I missed something?

if it drops below threshold the release kicks in

I kinda wonder why you didn t use same settings as far as possible on the compressors to compare them. Why didn't you do that? I mostly use compression to level out sharp transient signals that otherwise pop out the mix. the build up part of the signal makes most of it's character, in my opinion interessting would be how a compressor deals with that with different attack release settings on real audio signals.

Have you ever tried saturation for controlling transients? Compared to compression, it's much better suited to this task. Compressors are great for envelope shaping, but there are things they just can't do or do very poorly.

Why does the Softube FET Compressor create that shape?
