This is a good song to listen to when you want to walk around looking cool. Sometimes I'm walking around looking cool with this in my headphones and people can't hear it but I bet they're thinking, "Wow he's looking pretty cool walking there, he must be listening to Lydia".

My father passed away a couple of days ago and he would listen to this song all the time, he never got tired of it. This song will forever make me cry because of how much it makes me think of my father.
I've repeated this song when my mom had cancer, and when she passed away I literally screamed "I can't fucking breath" and it was so fucking honest. I hope You are ok now

The fact that this song is about looking at the horrible things you've done to someone you love, is so well executed. One of the best songs released in this decade.
So, he's talking about how he's ruined his lover Lydia with his substance abuse? This breaks my heart. Music is therapy, he's definitely using the heck out of it.
I hear "I tied you to the tracks". This is not a song of happy endings. Sorry to spoil your party, but I spent 25 years conjuring "others" for fun and finance. I had a run in with something related. HS is no joke. What it was, I couldn't identify. Not earthly color scheme and not sure how I got there. Just glad we didn't try to off eachother ;)
“She’s my ex-girlfriend and was one of the first people I met when I moved to Brooklyn. We became domesticated and eventually realised we weren’t pursuing our own goals; we were just watching Netflix, getting high and eating chicken pot pies. It’s about the two of us walking away so we could become the people we were meant to be. I played it to her before we released it - she liked the song.” - Johnny Stevens
THIS is the guitar sound I've been looking for in a band since 90's grunge. I love it! The lyrics, the themes and the guitar arrangements are exactly to my taste. That rarely happens.
I totally agree..my roommate turned me onto them. I said grunge rock had a child and this was the result. Its raw like early soundgarden from the album Loud Love.
You can interpret it how anyway you want however if you'd like to actually know what it is really meant to represent is drug use and its effect on relationships
I feel that this is a perfect description of depression with others telling you you're wrong for feeling so while you go through terminal with self destruction. Life's a beast. 😢 I felt that
She does a great job acting. Unconscious going in, then a slow return to consciousness. The confusion about her situation at first. She instinctively looks up still not comprehending her situation. Then slowly her eyes pan over the ropes binding her arms and then her legs. Slowly (and that is the key) slowly it dawns on her. The panic first appears in her eyes. The disbelief. Then the slow panic that builds until she is almost free only to find that one more rope binds her. But she doesn't have anymore life left in her and the resignation of her situation. Love it.
The recent music video for Highly Suspect's latest single Lydia falls into the category of, "I can't believe this exists." It's shot in realtime, and the entirety of its four-minute run time features an actress tied down at the bottom of a pool, trying her damnedest to break free. The first question you're probably asking yourself is, "How on earth can anyone hold their breath that long?!" Well, the actress in this video is actually world champion freediver Marina Kazankova. Here's TS&R to explain why she was the perfect choice for this production: Marina Kazankova, former freediving champion and world record holder, is best known underwater for her ‘dynamic breath hold’, or the ability to athletically move and exert energy while holding her breath. On land, Marina is also an actress and global traveler, speaking several languages (quadrilingual), and once we heard Marina could swim the length of almost four Olympic-sized swimming pools... on a single breath, we knew we had found our character. The final video was take 6 of 8.
I forgot to enjoy the song after a minute because I was so afraid she was going to drown. Every time the camera panned away from her face I said to myself yeah a deep sea diver has got to be given her some air right????
This song is such a core memory for me. My dad used to take us out riding around atl and we heard this song on the radio and my entire family fell in love with it. Reminds me of the times when things were okay but slowly started falling apart. Very bittersweet but somehow this song brought us all together.
As an oldie I would just like to say that its very gratifying and great to see that some younger bands like this are still making powerful, excellent music.
Might be industry BS but I live in Nashville so 1/4 of college classmates work in music one of ‘‘em said HSus was offered a contract 3 yrs before they excepted one in the interim they played 1200 plus shows little more than one daily saying they wanted to perfect the sound and style they were playing before recording anything for release
This song is dedicated to myself when i stuck around my alcohol addicted ex husband and dealt with his shit for 7 years helped him recover and he left me for someone named jessica.
I couldn't helped feeling suffocated seeing this girl that long under water...amazing video, the voice of this man takes me back to old good rock, I hope more bands like this emerge...
i love how we think she’s just slowly succumbing to her situation, but then you realize it was just slowed down and she’s actually fighting really really hard. amazing representation of the mental battles of addiction and depression.
@@hanreality.7266 Right, I think the intended take away is more along the lines of she was just kinda listlessly floating there at first, calmly taking in the sight of her own bound limbs but without freaking out, similar to the complacency and numbness to your own impending demise that rules your mind as you are on your way to rock bottom. You just keep letting yourself sink deeper, keep wasting the limited opportunity you have to save yourself before it's too late. Then, once the lack of oxygen really hits her and causes her to recognize the gravity of her situation, she begins to struggle against the ties that bind her. But she waited too long...
This song is my life... i mean... it's my life. I dated an addict, I never was one, and this is a perfect metaphor for how it feels. It never stops and neither of you can breathe. That pool is the combined tears that are shed and it fills up a tank fast. You're looking for a plug to pull but you don't realize that there isn't one. The saddest thing is I finally had enough and left, but he never made it out :(. That was 7 years ago.
It happens, don't blame yourself. I've been on both sides, willing and unwilling. His fight was with himself. All you could do is try. That's all any of us can do.
@@t.j.cornett7495 I've long stopped blaming myself because nothing would've changed whether I was there or not. You can't help those who just don't want to be helped, which I also accepted. No amount of love in the world I could give helped. Anywho, I LOVE this song and listened to it a lot but had no idea what it was really about. Seeing the video and reading up on it dredged up old feelings and kinda jabbed at a wound that never fully healed. Sorry, dammit, getting all weepy lol! I LOVE this song and
@@shardayb.7192 don't apologize. I'm certain that you tried, giving your best to the cause your heart demanded. I beat my addiction. It's a choice but not a simple one. I lost so much to that period in my life. I've never succumbed to such weak willed crap again but one must enjoy life and learn from the experience. Such a shame that a woman who loved so hard feels that she should apologize...
Definitely a song about a love gone wrong. Honestly the coolest video I’ve seen in a long time. I learned about this song years ago and I still love it.
@HWD’s Legacy Shoot me a message if you ever need to talk. I deal with serious anxiety on a daily basis as well. Not that bullshit "oh I'm feeling anxious" because you should be, but to the point where you get tunnel vision and lose your balance.

@HWD’s Legacy I'm sorry to hear that. Do you do any exercising? I'm only 33 and I feel like I have the body of a 70yr old lol I'm only like 15lbs overweight but my muscle density is like 0. It sucks because I use to be an athlete for most of my life and now I feel like garbage.

LYRICS Black ocean, cold and dark I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless But the only girl that could talk to him just couldn't swim Tell me what's worse than this And it echoes in the halls They danced along the walls The memories of your ghost You are the one that I used to love And I'm still in love, but I've never loved you the most I've seen better days So unafraid in my youth I can't breathe, much less believe You're getting everything you had Every little thing you had I'm gonna run repairs I've seen your fucking worst And at your worst, you're still the best But at my best, I am the worst It's a curse Your eyes are lined in pain Black tears don't hide in rain And I tied you to the tracks When I turned around, I heard the sound I hit the ground, I know there's no turning back I've seen better days So unafraid in my youth I can't breathe, much less believe the truth Better days, so unafraid in my youth I can't breathe, much less believe the truth Black ocean, cold and dark I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless But the only girl that could talk to him, she couldn't swim Tell me what's worse than this What's worse is all the coke The ice that numbs my throat if only for the night My muscles will contract, your bones will crack It's just a fact 'cause I am here to win this fight I can't fucking breathe, much less believe the truth I pick up a mag, aim for this head, and shoot Better days, so unafraid in my youth I can't breathe or believe the truth Your eyes are lined in pain Black tears don't hide in rain And I tied you to the tracks When I turned around, I heard that sound
You gave me everything you had, every little thing you had. A pure love unrehearsed. I've seen your best and worst and at your worst, you're still the best but at my best, I am the worst.
Listen to Francafrique by Refused and Figure it Out by Royal Blood for some similar songs. Francafrique is my go-to driving song with Lydia a close second now
You guys don't know how much literally and mentally this video and song mean for me and watching it 8 years later ,it changes my whole perspective!! Thank you!
I literally cant breathe as im listening to these lyrics...Life has left me breathless at least someone has found a way to put into words this inconsolable feeling that eats at me...
This is the first song to make me feel in a long time and just reminds me of why 10 years will always be amazing. Not only is the band made up of amazing people but Jesses lyrics are unbelievable. Thank you for continuing to put how many of us feel into words and melody ❤
Causation correlation fallacy. Just because your willing to bet most sadist think they are artists doesn't mean that most artist are sadist so your point?
I'm so happy I found this band, they are so good! I can't wait for them to be big, so that one day I can be all hipster and say something like 'PFFTT, I liked Highly Suspect BEFORE they were famous.' haha
+K cs That time has come and gone pal. This isnt even the original version of Lydia. So if thats the case does that mean im a hipster of the hipster fans? lol Really though, I recommend you listen to the original EP that some of Mister Asylum came from. Or their first studio album thats more reggae/ska/punk. You won't be disappointed!
This song explains my deep relapse back into drug use and how it got worse and worse before it finally got better. This song helped me thru it and so did Little One and all of Juice Wrlds music
this song is the most accurate depiction of the way drug addiction feels for those that don't suffer from it, and it's heartbreaking to see for one's who do.
All the symbols in this video from the ticking clock to the key she wears around her neck and the ropes that hold her in place mirror the lyrics perfectly. Feeling trapped and like your drowning as your life is just passing you by and you can’t seem to escape the prison even though you’re the key fucking A. Every line of this song hits me so hard. Dancing with your ghost, the hungry shark, the only one who could talk to him just couldn’t swim, of course the line “I can’t fucking breathe much less believe the “truth”. Just hearing this in 2022. Timeless truth to the insecurities in your own head and overcoming your traumas here.
"I've seen ur fn worst, n at ur worst ur still the best; but at my best I am the worst". My fav line in the song. Except when he says " I can't fuckin breath" at the end😂
thank god for new music like this ! finally some heart and soul in music again. This song gives me so many chills , music should always do that. this band gives me hope . Royal Blood , and Phantogram are the only new bands besides these guys that I have heard in the past few years that have really given me hope for new music.

+homeslice1998 I think it is about a man that pursues women, has sex with them, and leaves them. He finds a girl he wants and she can't resist him, even though she is going to hate herself after being with him. He realizes this and hates himself... but not enough to stop.

I love this song with my entire being. I have a dark past and background with family members forcing hard drugs in me as a child and having their way with me. I’m haunted to this day and even the law has failed me. I was assigned this song by a family member to describe what he did to me. It was chemical and psychological warefare instilled into me as a child. It sucks that’s why he gave me this song but goddamn it’s a beautiful song that perfectly depicts it. Thank you guys for never sugar coating or playing music that makes other people happy. This is music about real shit.
I just adore this band and it took me so long to bring myself to checking it out. My 9 year old has been teaching herself how to play on an acoustic guitar but today she just thanks to her mama and friend got a Brand New black and white electric guitar she's going to be ROCKING out
Amazing, when you listen to the song alone it conveys one message, but then when you listen to it alongside the video you get something a little different. The video opens with the sounds of a ticking clock, water, breathing, and the sound of submersion, presumably the girl tied up under water. This represents the moment a person enters modern life. For the first portion of the video, the girl stays still under water with her eyes closed. At first, in her trust of the world around her, she fails to see the danger she is really in if she fails to take action. This is also supported by the fact that the first chorus, which happens during this portion of the video, cuts off prematurely right before the words "the truth". Eventually, she opens her eyes and looks around her, but still trusts the world around her. This is supported by the line in the chorus talking about how unafraid the singer was in his youth. Eventually, one of the ropes tieing her down makes itself known by tugging on her right arm. This represents the darker aspects of modern life that tie us all down making itself known to her. After being made to know of one of the things tieing her down, she looks around and examines the other things tieing her down. At first she continues to trust the world around her, perhaps thinking that some outside force will come to save her, but fear slowly overtakes her face as she realizes the danger she is in and that the only one who can help her out of this danger is herself. At the moment of this realization, she suddenly and instantly enters into a panic, flailing helplessly, wasting the precious bits of her breath that represent the ever-passing time we all have in which to live our lives. After quite some time wasted flailing pointlessly, she finally begins to realize what has to happen before she is able to escape her grim fate and live her life as she sees fit, she finally realizes that she must remove the things that tie her down herself. Her first goal is achieved with ease as she frees her left arm and has a brief moment of triumph before being reminded how difficult gaining her freedom from her fate will be as she immediately fails her next goal, the tie on her right arm. She quickly abandons this goal, perhaps feeling she must become stronger first by removing all the other ties she noticed earlier in life. After undoing the ties on both of her legs, she finally has the strength to overcome that which she failed to overcome before, this time with greater ease then any previous ties. After overcoming everything she could perceive that was holding her back, keeping her from finally being able to breathe, she tries to come up for air but still cannot. She soon realizes that this must mean there is something else holding her back, causing her to drown. The one place she had not looked when finding things that tied her down was at herself, at her core. She then moves the flowing garment she is dressed in that obscures her view of herself to find one final tie holding her back, tied around her waist. This is the largest of all the ties she was bound by and exists at the very core of her being. The last thing she must overcome to be able to breathe, to be able to live the life she wants in the modern world, is herself. The video fades out as she struggles to save herself from herself and it is unclear if she succeeds and finally gets to breathe or if she drowns in this world having wasted too much time in her early life to be able to overcome herself along with everything else in her way in the end. The lyrics suggest that she ultimately fails, but the video is left open-ended, which further suggests that this is a message about the way life can go for any of us. Not everyone will be able to overcome themselves so they can finally breathe. Some of us will drown, some of us will escape, but we all must overcome the ties that bind us before we are able to truly breathe.

if you're a rock and roll fan, I highly recommend Rival Sons and Kaleo. Their styles are different but both seem reminiscent of classic rock. Oh and Jared James Nichols, he's like a Lynyrd Skynyrd style guitarist/song writer.
This video and the feeling the song invokes is the perfect parallel to a panic attack. I know because I just experienced them both at the same time. I'm gonna need a moment.
I'm now thirteen, but when I was around 5, my dad at me would take walk late at night, until June 23 of last year too, through my whole life, I have listened to highly suspect both on my own time and with my dad, June 23 at 3:43 my dad was dropped off at a gas station drunk and high expected to walk for at least 20 30 miles, he then got tapped by a van swirving into traffic, he then got flattened by 3 semis, I have seen the clothes he died in, I have his bloody wallet to this day, I love you dad, you'll always be in my heart❤😥💔

Then the slow panic that builds until she is almost free only to find that one more rope binds her. But she doesn't have anymore life left in her and the resignation of her situation. Love it.
The recent music video for Highly Suspect's latest single Lydia falls into the category of, "I can't believe this exists." It's shot in
realtime, and the entirety of its four-minute run time features an actress tied down at the bottom of a pool, trying her damnedest to break free.
The first question you're probably asking yourself is, "How on earth can anyone hold their breath that long?!" Well, the actress in this video is actually world champion freediver Marina Kazankova. Here's TS&R to explain why she was the perfect choice for this production:
Marina Kazankova, former freediving champion and world record
holder, is best known underwater for her ‘dynamic breath hold’, or the ability to athletically move and exert energy while holding her breath.
On land, Marina is also an actress and global traveler, speaking several languages (quadrilingual), and once we heard Marina could swim the length of almost four Olympic-sized swimming pools... on a single breath, we knew we had found our character.
The final video was take 6 of 8.
They actually did a video of the making of Lydia =D You're right, it's truly remarkable.
Knowing this was actually done by this woman holding her breath only makes it that much more stressful to watch...
@@TheDeridor yea I was so scared. I stopped breathing. I was like am I about to see a woman drown o.o

This song is such a core memory for me. My dad used to take us out riding around atl and we heard this song on the radio and my entire family fell in love with it. Reminds me of the times when things were okay but slowly started falling apart. Very bittersweet but somehow this song brought us all together.
This song isn't for thots, it's about thots silly. Shouldn't you be listening to Cardi B?

I couldn't helped feeling suffocated seeing this girl that long under water...amazing video, the voice of this man takes me back to old good rock, I hope more bands like this emerge...
i love how we think she’s just slowly succumbing to her situation, but then you realize it was just slowed down and she’s actually fighting really really hard. amazing representation of the mental battles of addiction and depression.
It wasn’t slowed down, it was filmed in real time. Look at the bubbles.
@@hanreality.7266 Correct....
This song got me through a lot
This song is my life... i mean... it's my life. I dated an addict, I never was one, and this is a perfect metaphor for how it feels. It never stops and neither of you can breathe. That pool is the combined tears that are shed and it fills up a tank fast. You're looking for a plug to pull but you don't realize that there isn't one.
The saddest thing is I finally had enough and left, but he never made it out :(. That was 7 years ago.
It happens, don't blame yourself. I've been on both sides, willing and unwilling. His fight was with himself. All you could do is try. That's all any of us can do.

The most frightening representation of anxiety that I've seen. I hope nobody ever experiences anything like this feeling.
this song isn't about anxiety
Music is about what and how it feels. This is an awesome song and video
@HWD’s Legacy Shoot me a message if you ever need to talk. I deal with serious anxiety on a daily basis as well. Not that bullshit "oh I'm feeling anxious" because you should be, but to the point where you get tunnel vision and lose your balance.
@HWD’s Legacy I feel ya, I recently just started taking Lexapro because nothing else has really worked so far. My body is just constantly on high alert and it's not healthy. It's even affected my heart. My blood pressure is through the roof and my resting heart rate is in the high 90's.

Black ocean, cold and dark
I am the hungry shark, fast and merciless
But the only girl that could talk to him just couldn't swim
Tell me what's worse than this
And it echoes in the halls
They danced along the walls
The memories of your ghost
You are the one that I used to love
And I'm still in love, but I've never loved you the most
I've seen better days
So unafraid in my youth

You're amazing. 💖💖
Blorton Adler OH MY LORD
I'm gonna screenshot that and read it later. That's a lot of screenshots

You've always been my hero, my best friend and you were there even when I didn't know it and now more than ever.
You make me feel alive and I promise you that I will help you live your life to the fullest ❤️
Highly Suspect is the best! But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf 🐺 by SLT right now !!! You’re missing out !!! 🤘:)
I have a cat named Lyida, and she loves it when we play/sing this song for her when she is brushed. :) She is the sweetest cat ever.
rock is that you?!!
if you're a rock and roll fan, I highly recommend Rival Sons and Kaleo. Their styles are different but both seem reminiscent of classic rock. Oh and Jared James Nichols, he's like a Lynyrd Skynyrd style guitarist/song writer.
Ryland McGreevy get some Royal Blood mate
Best rock band I have heard in a looooong while
I'm late I know, South Africa is slow on the uptake
Greta Van Fleet says hello

Glad you're on the bandwagon now at least. :) These guys always seem to perform their hearts out.
This video and the feeling the song invokes is the perfect parallel to a panic attack. I know because I just experienced them both at the same time. I'm gonna need a moment.
The thompson is correct.
I hope if I ever wake up under water, I would have a faster reaction time.
lol, you'll never wake-up.

I was at my local Hot Dog stand the other day waiting my turn, I was listening to this with my headphones around my neck. Some guy came up and was said “ What song is that!?” I said “Lydia by Highly Suspect” he said that song sounds deep. Long story short , he pulled it up on RUclips and blasted it from his car and he became a fan! It’s nice sharing music with others!
I love when the video is finished. I can finally take a breath.
first time listening: this isn't THAT good...
second time: well...
third time: BLACK OCEAN COLD AND DARK...
Cant believe I just found these guys a few days ago. Played nothing but them since lol
Dude same
Lol I thought it was black ocean golden duck
I thought this was amazing on my first listen & immediately looked up the lyrics to find the artist and name of the song.
I've been listening to this song for years, and it's still one of my favourite songs to sing along with, closely followed by The Mystic - Adam Jensen.
Johnny has such a fun voice and style to emulate, and the notes are within my "good" vocal range too (barely).
And people say rock is dead...
no ones says that
everyones saying that
This is not rock lol get out of here this is boy band shit
this aint it chief
Хайдан whose chief?
You think you know someone. You think you love that person. And only to find out you somehow became a captive.
Then you finally break free.
That's how it relates to me.
I absolutely love this song
