- I've been meaning to post this one for a while now! I've had it worked up but just haven't recorded it. I'm on a banjo kick so there will be a few more banjo covers in the near future as well. Also, new background! I moved this last weekend so excuse some of the mess.
I am not young. This brought tears to my eyes - the fact that someone of your age is covering this in 2024. I first heard Stan Rogers sing this on Dave Sear's radio program Folk and Baroque in the early 1980s on WNYC radio. You have marvelous taste. Bravo! And you might also want to check out Bill Staines.

I'm a diehard metalhead but I've always loved Stan Rogers, and this cover is great.
I love punk and metal as well but I can only really write and play folk music, so I get you lol
That's how i started too, but i have expanded into many genres, and Stan Rogers is one of those amazing artist that i lost before i was even born. Good Music is good music.
I always loved this song, and then I visited Alberta. Oh boy, every word is truth.

I worked oil for 6 years out there...trust me this song is 100 times more accurate than you might know
I dont know why, but ever time I listen to covers of Stan Rogers, its always missing something; like it doesnt sound quite right. This is the only cover i've listen to that really works for me. It has its own thing going for it but still has the same vibe as the original without trying to be a 100% copy.
This comment meant a lot to me. I always try to achieve that tone with any of my covers I post.

It is the lilt he has when he sings it. Most covers are flat in comparison.

Very well done. Stan gave us quite a few wonderful songs. His son Nathan has done some excellent covers of Barrett's Privateers, Flowers of Bermuda, Northwest Passage, and probably others I've forgotten. I'd bet money Stan or Nathan would be happy with this cover. Great Job.

Lovely cover, first time I heard this song was sung by Chris Burk from PEI at a kitchen party, you will find others your age playing folk music there.
Good cover of a song from an absolutely legendary artist. I got really into Stans music in 2020 while I was in the Army. It makes me happy to see people close to my age appreciate his music.

Hey another Stan Rogers fan, I love Stan. “45 Years” was the first song I learned to fingerpick and Marry Ellen Carter” was the first song I learned to play on guitar. Since then I have learned more songs by Stan and I am lear how to sing and I love singing Stan Rogers.
Those are great songs! I've given some thought to covering 45 years as well. Keep on playing!

I gotta say, you absolutely crushed this cover, excellent job! Stan's one of those musicians that died before I was born, but I'd waste a genie's 3 wishes on watching him live. Oh wait, one of the Genie's rules is not bringing people back from the dead, so I guess i'm boned either way.

it's really good! I might only recommend altering the mix to make the banjo a little quieter, your voice is so lively and free it should be easier to hear
@averagejoey2000 I do not have a mix lol. I just try to sit as far back from my computer as I can and elevate the microphone away from the banjo. Banjo is, unfortunately at times, a powerful instrument
