When I saw the fine details I thought there was going to be liberal use of the old pastel pencils, but no, the man 'draws' with watercolours...amazing!

This Wind Mill is the perfect subject to paint. I only wish it did not portray the long winter ahead and had a display of tulips around it. Thank you for this beautiful tutorial.

Wow wow wow 🔥🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏👏
Masterful! Thanks again, Paul!

What was on the stairs..........o a mouse. Ha

Paul you use Arche paper here but sometimes you use Bockingford can you tell us the reasons why please?
Lol!!! - don't get me started again!
This Arches I used was Cold press as I didn't want too much texture ''' the Bockingford I have is the Rough.
Was so happy you had the time to make a video, wouldn't be the same without Paul Clark Wednesday. Thanks I always learn something when I watch you paint.

Work day done, training done, tomorrow is off and I had a new Paul Clark video to watch. Life can be good! Especially with this subtle painting ;-)
So much fun watching this. Btw, I don’t know the song about dutch windmills but we better leave it like that. And again btw, the Advocaat drink you have was only drunk by old lady’s with whipped cream. Nobody drinks it anymore. Instead we drink a hot coco with whipped cream and….a bit of rum. But only when it’s very, very cold or when you like it😅😉
Lol! - thanks for the info and you must check out the song! (it's on RUclips) and you'll be singing it all week!
What a wonderful picture of a windmill in my country. Just love it. This is such a familiar sight. Pity you did not have a bit of whipped cream on your 'advocaatje'.
Lol!!! thanks for that Lenie!
Thanks you ! This lesson is very useful. I drew a beautiful picture.

Beautiful painting ! Thanks for the video.
Thank you! Cheers!
Dear Mr Clark. No "splat"? I love this as well ;). I am familiar with this paper, though it is the only I have this far. It is thirsty, as you say, but stays that quite long, so there is no stress with skies, and other wide areas. I use a hairdrier to speed up the drying many times, and the paper don't ever cry for such. The surface structure is lovely for landscapes, and admits good effects for "side-brushing" and such. The backside is more smooth, and suits well for portraits. I happen to find a sale of Archer by a coincidence, when I searched for my first paper, and don't want to change.
The epithet "less is more" is interesting in many situations. As an old engineer I used it long before I heard it for the first time. Find the essence, and don't complicate anything. As well as a photographer in the black and white era, I always tried to compose, and angle up the camera to get rid of as much as possible of uninteresting details, and get as close as possible.
Shadowing the camera from incoming lights to directly reach the lens, Calculating exposure time, and choosing the opening for wanted sharpness depth. Calculating the developing time for the wished contrast, and many, many things. Even doing my best, it was always hazardous, and the result were seldom perfect.
Later on, it was hours of work in the darkroom, to get rid of disturbant spots, and actions to feature the depth of the wanted details, and so on. Dust was the first enemy.
I gave up when photo became digital.
However painting amuses me, and I recently gave watercolor a chance. I went stuck immediately by the vibrancy of colors, and the possibility to Not paint everything in a photo.
Full freedom of color choice, tones and everything. If I want, I can add some persons as a staffage, and lie with whatever I want. Isn't that lovely?
I am glad, you tell that less is more, and to avoid overworking so often, and I will tell why:
For the first I need to hear it, although I am aware of it, but nevertheless needs to hear it repeated. Many more needs to hear it.
Copying a photo is not possible, and have no need, though the photo already exists.
By simplificating everything from a photo to just a few percent, when painting, nothing of essence will be lost, and the watcher will be loving it, because the brain will have fun.
Is not that what art really is? To let our brains have fun?
Thank you for this brilliant lesson. I enjoyed every part of it, and learned a lot. My brain has fun and loves this picture.
It’s amazing 😍😍👏👏
Cheers!
Really enjoyed this one! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure Lila!
Absolutely outstanding!
Thank you kindly!
Love it. Thanks once again for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love snowy scenes. What a beautiful piece! You always make it look so easy and your explanations make it feel very achievable for those of us that are early on in our watercolor journeys. Thanks Paul!
Thank you very much!

You just made my day! I'm visiting my children in Friesland, Netherlands and itching to paint a windmill! And voila! thanks to Margot and you I'll be able to try this out!! Many thanks for sharing as well as your sketches.
Very nice, Paul. Beautiful soft colours. I use both hands to paint. Always have. Yogi Berra used to say, "I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous". :)
Lol!!! - great comment Margaret!
Just amazing!
What did you think of the Daniel Smith watercolors? Thanks so much for all these tutorials. Learning a LOT.
This is such a gorgeous painting Paul - would you ever be able to do a tutorial of painting a Norwegian fjord?
I'll stick on my list Leanne!
