7:50 it is the proper way to merge called zipper merge. Reduces differences in speeds between two lanes Reduces the overall length of traffic backup by as much as 40 percent Reduces congestion on freeway interchanges Creates a sense of fairness and equity that all lanes are moving at the same rate
The zipper *is* the most efficient way to merge lanes, it’s not even debatable. The problem is, for the zipper to work, everyone has to be on the same page. It rarely goes that smoothly in real life.
90% of these people should have their licenses taken away cause they are too crazy on the road. Self driving cars can’t come out fast enough to deal with these issues.
Where I come from, this people will have their drivers card yeeted into the void along side of a ticket, but blocking a ambulance, that is jail time and a fine.
7:55 perfectly legit, legal and proper merge, you don't merge a mile back, you merge at the point of merging lanes, where the lanes technically come together and then it is called a zipper merge when done correctly....
Same here, retired OTR.......I went 35 years and millions of miles without killing or injuring anyone........I live in a small town now and I have NO URGE to go anywhere at all! A couple weeks ago, someone honked their horn. Heads turned and I heard someone say, "Tourist."
Seeing those two cops on horseback @ 12:22 reminded me of an encounter I had with an officer riding a horse. Let me explain. As I stated in my previous comment, I live in St. Louis, MO. Many years ago, I was in the neighboring city of St. Charles. It was the downtown district with many small shops and brick-paved roads near the Mississippi River. With it being a cool crisp day I had my window rolled down. While at a stop sign, a cop on horseback comes up beside me. Next thing I know I am gasping for air. The officer leaned over and asked me if everything was O.K. I responded "No. Your horse just farted." While laughing, the cop pats the horse on the head and says "Good boy." I then asked the officer, "Are horse farts the new way of fighting crime?"
7:51 Any cop or traffic control expert will tell you that it is always more efficient to merge at the end of the merge. Both of those lanes should have been full all the way up to the point where it reaches the cones. FACTS!
Driving until the end of the lane before merging in a “zipper” is the most efficient way to use the lane space. It requires everyone to play along though, alternating between lanes at the merge point.
The person in that merging video where he passed all the idiots in line is 1000% correct. People don't know how to freaking merge using the zipper...drives me insane
The one where the lady just jumped out of her car and walked, and the car kept going. The story behind that one is that there was a spider in her car. lol Every time I see that video clip, I always laugh so hard. lol
7:57 @Akimbo , (Google this out) Depends on the State. That actually DOES look like it is set up to be a "Zip Merge lane" where you are REQUIRED BY LAW to go to the cones to merge and merging is SUPPOSED to be 1:1. For that reason, they do NOT put up markers stating "Right lane ends in X feet"...because they actually expect traffic t work properly. Technically--I'd not do it that way, if I knew that lane was ending (like it had been like that for a day or two...)
Was going to say the same. The "a-hole" may be the only one doing it correctly. Of course, I'd do it incorrectly, because I don't want everyone mad at me.
Here in germany it is also the rule to drive until the end of the lane and then merge one by one. During the rushhour, than the experienced drivers are on the way it works perfectly.
@@Nathan-lu2zz Nope thats not stupid, if all stay in their lane until the end and they let the other lane pass alternately, it is very effective and satisfiing, but if you have this type of people: You will not pass!!! Because do did not change the lines 1 mile before like me! It does not work.

I live in St Louis, MO. The guy @ 9:16 is something that most drivers I see do quite regularly around here. I have seen some come damn near the middle of the intersection thinking that the light will change more quickly.
The one with the white car just pulling left out into traffic is here. And the driveway is the Walmart parking lot, and it happens often there. I had to swerve into oncoming a few times from people just gunning it out that entrance. Also the one before that is Sportsworld drive, another crazy road.
3:20 this happened to me a couple days ago someone was pulling out of a parking lot and did not see me being right there on the main road. Luckily no one was in the other lane so I was able to swerve around their car and avoid any collision

07:59 this is how you're actually supposed to join traffic. It has been proven to move all traffic faster, for some reason in the U.S we just wait in a long line unlike all other countries.
Re Porsche. A friend asked me to drive their Porsche to a service station. I had to take the freeway to get there. The speed limit was 100 kms, I honestly thought i was doing 60 miles an hour or 100 kmh. I was way wrong. Yup, i was driving 100 MPH. Porsches are frighteningly gluey to the road. (Took me all of 10 minutes to figure out it was not go slow day.)

Encouraged, even, since experts have said that zipper merging lets traffic go faster overall and reduces jams. As USA Today has said... "Drivers, you're merging all wrong: Being polite is causing traffic jams" *Edited for timestamp
The zipper method is the correct way to change lanes where a lane ends. Stopping sooner only creates congestion.
Correct. That’s what the Drivers handbook tells you.

At 8 Minutes. This is the law in Germany. Drive until the lane ends. Perfectly done.
This method (zipper method) is also the endorsed way to merge during heavy traffic in U.S. as well....problem is most drivers do not understand that 🙄
Same in England, people just seem to forget
It´s the same i Denmark
Same in the UK, but all the morons that don't know how to drive don't bother with it.
