- A woman is dead after a large steel drum rolled away from the construction site of the University of Pittsburgh's new sports complex in Oakland. KDKA-TV's Mamie Bah reports.
My dog has “escaped” my house. This drum did not “escape”. It “escaped” the attention of those in charge of safety measures, ensuring this didn’t happen to anyone. Lawyer up.
To OSHA, not many things are deemed "accidental" or "by chance". Once OSHA gets all up in that @$$, I'm certain they'll see gross negligence somewhere (faulty carrying straps, improperly tied straps, etc).
OSHA is going to have a field day with this one. Clearly the drum wasn’t in a type of position to avoid an accident like this
@@pablot-r9402I bet they will. I was a medic for almost 10 years and I’ve been to a few construction or industrial accidents and all were preventable. One was at a glass factory and they made huge panes of glass and a very young guy (19 I think or somewhere around that) was in a cherry picker and the bucket was all the way up with him in the bucket and as the cherry picker moved it collided with something else (this was years ago so I’m trying to remember) and was tipped over and the kid in the bucket fell onto a huge pane of glass on a big table. He had a hole in his head that you could put your fist through. I don’t know the result of that investigation but I’m sure the company got fined heavily since the kid in the bucket didn’t have a helmet on nor a harness. I’m willing to bet that was a huge violation and it possibly could have avoided his death. I don’t know but we tried to save him but there was no way we could get him back.
It escaped the work site? Was it being held hostage? Come on guys do better
Mainstream is all about the emotions and not facts. Only telling part of the story is how their scam works.
“Became uncontained” was the preferred verbiage, but they were afraid it would trigger the low information viewers
Exactly
The language is carefully used because it’s gonna be a lawsuit.
If I was really dumb, I’d like your comment.
This is absolutely third world country stuff. Who's running the construction site, Alec Baldwin?
🤣🤣
The Rust armorers has a new job…
trump the 🍊🤡
you seen a third world country?
it's far worse than one miniscule individual construction accident, places like india have children illegally working unprotected lifting heavy and sharp ore\ rocks, constantly getting cut up,while their half useless parents spend all day either digging through trash or scamming people for money and that's just the beginning of just India....that's 3rd world region, this is just a minor accident.
Hey, Alex was "cleared of all charges". Blame the armorer...I mean, the steel drum operator.
It didn't escape. Negligence on the part of the construction workers caused this death.
It's not an "accident" it was incredible negligence and failure to follow basic safety procedures. Costa Construction and whoever was the foundation subcontractor need to be fined and put out of business.
I'm no lawyer but it seems a class action could be in order. How many people were walking around there when this happened?
It’s called cheap labor sub contractors and DEI .
edbrod. FDJT
I agree the construction company will be sued
@@aramfingal class action ...?
that explains the "not a lawyer" bit
Walking with her colleagues and no one hollered look the fk out.
Funny, you should mention it, we just re-watched the movie “Idiocracy“ yesterday. Not because it’s the best movie in the world, but because it makes kind of a point, which is well represented here she got Upgrayeed by her friends
Your so right, you would think someone would be screaming to look out. But, maybe she was on her cell phone, some people become unconscious when looking on those.
jeffreyking, accidents happen. YOU weren't there. YOU don't know they circumstances. Maybe they didn't see it coming. But if it makes YOU feel better, blame the victim's friends, instead of the company...or freakin' fate.
@d.lawrence5670 I just said if she was walking with some colleagues maybe one would have takin her safety into consideration . My friends care about me. I see why yours don't. Lmao.
Unfortunately that’s the Pitt campus area and is RAMPANT with students on their phones not looking out. MANY pedestrians hit by cars in that area over the years. RIP
She was my classmates mom - I just found out today. I feel awful for him. I hope he’s okay after this. I feel terrible about this whole thing
Absolutely horrible to hear about this negligence.
If I may ask, do you know how it happened? Was she walking by the truck while they were unloading it or hit as it rolled down the hill. I know she wasn't hit by the car because that would have been obvious.
I'm asking because I'm always wondering how this could be avoided by other people on next time. Since this is a unique event none of us would have expected!
I very much doubt that he is okay.
Stop lying!

Outrageous negligence
The pipe escaped? Like a runaway prisoner. How about poor business practices of the construction workers.
Time for both companies to be shut down by OSHA. They both have numerous safety violations, including violations, resulting from the death of workers. This must stop.
a piece of steel cannot escape a construction site.
Nice way to display your total ignorance.
@@lennychorn147how? They're not wrong. It doesn't have legs or arms to push itself away. It's not a pet that slipped out the door and escaped it's owner.
@@raeraebadfingers It was a heavy cylindrical object that can roll. There could be a number of reasons that it was sent rolling. It could be from an unloading accident. Someone on a machine could have accidentally hit it, causing it to start rolling. If you look, you can see that there was a decent downgrade from the jobsite to the sidewalk.
@@lennychorn147 Ok, both of those things are not "accidents", the correct word is negligence.
@@ShionWinkler Maybe, maybe not.
Sad n tragic. Negligence from construction company. Things like this shouldn’t happen.

@@jamesferguson2353 that's quite a bit different than somebody being killed, by negligent workers. This was not an accident. It was negligence and complacency.
@@654Crossman I don't think that was his point at all. Do you know how many people are killed in auto accidents every year, falling off ladders or how many kids commit suicide every day who are under 14 years old. The bottom line, that should be considered, is that we have never been safer in life, but that we can do better: don't over work your employees, and make sure they are not rushed, and always double check their work.
In the Movie "Time-Travel" (cute movie) there is a part where the main character is told to live each day twice, until you figure out how to live each day fully.
Here comes the lawyers!!
With every right!
This is truly sad I feel sorry for her family and friends and hope the family sues the construction company for that
Oh I do believe they will so sad
journalism has died with this story
Pitt needs to build more libraries not sports arenas.
🎯💯🎯
The sports arenas sponsor the libraries.
@@qret-dv5ym no, that depends on each cities level of corruption and the local pro teams should pay for it, not taxpayers
@@katiesiouxlamoureaux7757 This is college. Pitt athletics is definitely sponsoring the university. They don't have to pay the athletes. They're banking off their football and basketball players.
People complain about federal and state safety regulations and organizations. Well guess what’s coming next, all because someone said I don’t need to do that it’s stupid.
Yeah, it’s funny how people vote for Republicans who want to go into office and cut regulations cut federal oversight and then they wonder why stuff like this happens. If you want stuff like this to stop, you need to keep the Democrats in office so they can maintain a strong administrative state to punish companies when they do reckless stuff like this that’s the only way you are going to change their behavior.
Over-regulation is a problem. Not all regulations are good. Some are needed, many are not.
@@dr.emilschaffhausen4683 And then we wonder how lead gets in our water...
First off , it's not a steel drum, as your video description says. Second, it did not "Escape", as you have reported it to have.

Just goes to show, your day can always get worse. I feel so bad for the woman or they/them.

You mean the family's lawyer will own the company now.
Did anyone else see “Acme” on the side of the cylinder?
When people say freak accident...it usually isn't. In this case no one called it a freak accident and it absolutely is.
Hope the get sued for everything

They will. Notice that their statement came from their attorney. Lawsuits will be filed against several parties.

Always be ready to meet your Maker! You never know what kind of weird circumastance can occur!
You would think the cylinder would be making all sorts of noise rolling, but being next to a construction site with its noises, and the general city’s noise she would not have noticed it.
A tragic accident.
Thats what I was thinking too.
Yeah, but it had to get louder as it approached.....
that student had some incredibly dumb insight
Yeah, especially when she said it's scary that things like this can happen on a "random Friday". As if it is tragic that this occurred on a Friday vs any other day of the week.
Most people are never good at impromptu interviews anyway. They will just say whatever comes to mind.
Was seeing on another news site that Pittsburgh OSHA barely fines for the death of employees. This company should be sued for millions
Escape = break free from confinement. Please explain how an inanimate objects manages to free itself. Construction workers were negligent.
It weighed a fukn ton... That's how.
That and probably a little negligence.
Nowhere in your definition of escape does it specify that the object of focus has to under its own power break free. Just thought I'd point out your own definition
& it's to "blame"
@FordRangerClassics
@@Eduardo_Espinoza I'm sorry, I literally do not understand what you're trying to tell me
@@FordRangerClassics I don't own Oxford English Dictionary nor am I a lexicographer, so it's not my definition. Escape and Break Free are verbs (action words) and inanimate objects can't act on their own. Guess you never went to school because elementary school students are taught Newton's First Law of Physics -- An object at rest remains at rest unless acted on by an *external force.*
I was there, you can see my car parked nearby as police interviewed me off camera.
It's was absolutely gruesome, a person had their Stomach/abdomen completely blown open and exposed to the open air.
It was about 60 degrees out here and there was literal STEAM coming out of their lower stomach. I honestly
couldn't believe that the human body was that hot on the inside
One female driver was dry heaving after getting out of her
vehicle to run up & get a better look, as the person's entrails had smelled like "Bad sewage" (As the lady described). I had to drop my breakfast off at
the nearby shelter because I had lost my appetite knowing I had inhaled someone's inner "Fumes", I even found myself dry heaving earlier just thinking about it...
I will never forget seeing this
Ain’t no way they didn’t hear that thing rolling down the hill

My payers go out to the family of the woman who has died 😢😢😢
LOL 😂, the cylinder " escaped" from the construction site .... as if it was a animal with legs escaping from the zoo. 😂
it's looking for dio and the rest of the road roller
Absolute incompetence. People die when safety is not treated seriously.
Man, this incident sure is gonna COSTA lot of money in fines and lawsuits.
This horrible accident that could've been prevented to excuse
Time for drug tests.
Profits before safety, the cost of doing business is too expensive. Hurry up and get it done at any cost. That kind of mindset unfortunately gets people killed.
Unsecured heavy Round steel cylinders atop a slope, what could possibly go wrong?
The drum didn’t escape like it moved on its own and tired of being fenced in. The language is quite elementary. But I see a lawsuit coming.
I would bet that there were attorneys on that case, prior to the pipe jumping the fence!!!
My condolences to the woman, her family and friends.
Pipe DOWN! It did NOT Escape. Unless you mean it "Escaped" the attention of the workers.
Man, the other people with her, saw it all.Never get that scene out of your mind. That's how quick it happens.May the victim rest in peace
"Escaped"?!?!? It's not a living creature with free will.
They feel so bad they cant even say her name.
Politicians are now calling for more 'Drum Control'.
Since the dawn of life, being unable to react and move quickly has always had fatal consequences.
How were there no anti-roll tabs welded to the outside of that cylinder?
“Like like like like like like like like” -Student
That’s so sad and bizarre at the same time
Suing doesn't change anything life wise ..
No, it buys a house or 2, financial security, a new car, plastic surgery etc..................live IS changed
How does this happen???
Thoughts and prayers? Like that's at all helpful. How about lots of apologies, money and plans to properly secure your construction materials in the future?
She either didnt notice or was looking at her phone. Thats horrible!
It's not her fault who would have thought she was going to die by being crushed it was accident that could've been prevented period
@@juliaweber212 Yes, it is not her fault. Prayers to victim and to her family & friends. I'm sure it all happened so fast once that heavy drum started rolling & picking up momentum.
Major ineptitude is what allowed a large round metal object to roll from an uphill position, and accountability is what follows. Creating new guidelines can't help this poor woman or anyone else because there are already a multitude of safety regulations that need to be followed when doing this kind of work, which were obviously ignored.
Lawsuit!! You can't compensate a life, but you can definitely hold the company accountable.
Incredibly sad.
MAJOR lawsuit coming through.
I feel like there's too many construction projects happening all at once. In DC where I'm from the entire DMV is just one big construction site, everything from the roads to buildings all at once, its making traffic unbearable and taking lives as well. My condolences to the young woman who was killed.
ESCAPED? wth??
Who lost her life today not their life today.
Apparently, she succumbed before they had time to "ask her what her pronouns were", so... just playing it safe.
It literally makes no difference except some people just love to be upset over labels because, uhhhhhh, the OTHER people are snowflakes! Yeah!
Grammar is dead for every generation after those educated in the 1990's.
I’m amazed that someone is trying to correct someone over the use of a pronoun such in this case when we come to these comments section and I see people writing one verrrrrrrrry long run on sentence and nothing has a capital letter such as when starting a sentence and that’s probably because no one wants to use a period, comma, or a question mark. Makes it impossible to read. I’ve heard that schools are not teaching kids how to write in cursive anymore now that computers are everywhere. Did they stop teaching grammar now at all? I’m curious to know if you are the grammar police with those who can’t type a sentence at all?
@@debrakleid5752 bro fyi, I'm 30 and they stopped teaching cursive in schools when I was about 8 or9 years old. I feel like so many people have been out of school to the point that they just fantasize about it and vote on that. Nott you specifically, I'm just saying in general

A 1 ton object doesn't simply move by accident. It clearly was not secured in a safe manner.
I've never heard of such a thing.
the metal steel drum escaped. Doh
Can't you hear a cylinder that big rolling down the road? Perhaps staying off your phone and paying attention to your surroundings.
It was likely going quickly, but also would have been loud.
Be safe. Please be aware of your surroundings.
has the offending cylinder been charged with the escape?
Sue them until they are bankrupt and selling the sports complex to pay for further damages and fines. Government should Sue the company as well.
