Had an x5 m50d that started getting transmission and drivetrain problems sold it within 2 weeks and purchased the x3 m40i ,,best decision I ever made regarding cars
I don’t know if this X5 has it but the V10 Touareg has a sequence with the key and throttle to reset the programming of the transmission and make it “learn” from scratch the driver’s preferred way of driving. Maybe that could fix the faster than optimal gear changes in Sport mode.
I'm still happy with my 06 330d the reason I bought it was i went out for a test drive in a 640d and had a quick race with v10 m6 and found we were level up at high speeds so did some research and found the engine in 640d was very similar to 330d so I jumped on one and when I seen x50d and it had 3 turbos just doesn't seem worth it £££ + nightmare to fix if goes wrong 🤑 m57 engine of choice everytime, do like f80 m3 but crank hub issues put me off and preventative maintenance is £3.000 + unless purchased with work already done !
Look up the Grease Monkey Motor Garage M2 50d. Guys took the Tri turbo 3.0d from the X5 and sticked it into a 2 series. They recently did the Simola Hill climb with it
Gearbox torque limit is 750nm according to the stats so already at its limit as standard. I have one and toyed with the idea of mapping it but decided against it for that very reason.

There's a few people in my country who are in the 900nm range on that gearbox. It can and has been done. Wether you would want to do it depends on you.
Nothing says modern car like having to remove the sub frame to take off a down-pipe, absolute madness cars are getting so ridiculously complicated at this rate electric is going to take over just because they are simple! New cars just aren’t serviceable anymore

What am I looking at cost for everything mentioned in this video and is it possible to have multiple maps on the car for example using the eco Pro mode have a more economical map for when the Mrs drives as she's happy with the stock power 😂 and then a fully aggressive map on sports plus? Would be nice to see the boost curve, egt and exhaust backpressure over the rpm range during the pull. Thinking of a N/B57 for a boat with just a single 7163 or 7670. Dont suppose you can fit big single turbo in the chassi of the X5. Thanks for the video.
@@DarksideDevelopments Just learnt that OXE diesel outboards now use a bmw B57 and B47 for their engines. Twin turbo variant for the OXE300, so some future boat mods for you potentially. They are rated up to 4000-4250rpm for 220kw with the power dropping off after 3000rpm due to turbo system being restrictive I assume. A turbo upgrade would be good.
The handling on the cayenne is far better than the X5. The cayenne defies physics at cornering ability. As for steering it’s pin sharp like the majority of Porsche products !

The Cayanne would be my first modern-day Porsche SUV. I was wondering how it felt to drive. I tried out the 3rd and 4th gen X5. No steering feel and its very light. Also very wide track for uk roads. I checked the Cayanne is almost 20cm less wide than the X5 but is still a big SUV tall and long. Where I live for 25 to 40k you can find a used X5 or a Cayanne from 2014 to 18 vintage.
First thing I do on any turbo diesel I own get rid of any of that egr dpf rubbish. I've noticed too the triple turbo bmws are only in the big stuff. I would love to own a e420 cdi Mercedes but you can't get them here 😩
i just did stage 2 on my m550d and didnt remove the dpf yet before the inspection. i did turn off the egr and the tuner said the car will make black smoke when i put the downpipe. is that the smoke u said at 12:00

@@DarksideDevelopments they do have the PID sensor to datalog turbine speed. After a remap on my F15 M50D running about 3.3bars, I see roughly 147,000rpms at full boost.
Modern diesels are mega complicated now, I would own one new and under warranty but I'd be scared to death of owning a car like that once it's a few years old. I wonder if petrols are less of a potential money pit.
Is it the same box as the other 30d/35d's? If so how does it cope with the torque? Looking to sort my 535d with a map and whatnot but concerned for the box?
This particular model comes with the ZF8 transmission (GA8HP75Z) - We have had no issues with this level of torque. All of the ZF8's we tested had no issues with high amounts of torque.
I've done a little research and Wikipedia indicates the 8HP75 version of the ZF 8 speed is rated at 553lbft and the X5M50D produces 546lbft, so only just inside. (references below). I'd be up for tuning my car but would feel concerned about wrecking the gearbox. @Darkside - do you do any warranty packages? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_8HP_transmission
I was also wondering about it myself 🤷 obviously there must be simple way to disengage the front by software, I doubt they would be physically unplugging from the transfer case the front diff...?
This has a much better gearbox than the Touareg, the V10 engine has a lot of low end torque but is certainly not as fast as the X50d. The Touareg would fair better off-road though!

DPF…gone, EGR….gone, EGR cooler … gone, swirl flaps…gone. And the latest contender….Adblue…gone 👍. All these emmision related components which always cause us customers a world of hurt ☹️.

It needs to be in Sport+ to change at higher RPM. I have an X5 M50D, managed a 4.31s 0-62 out of it. Theyre beasts once tuned.

got 3.0D E70 8 speed auto and I personally dont need any more power. Also getting 34 overall per gallon. Still love a go in a 50D

O6 reg or 2016? If 06 m57 engine is completely different to 640d engine n57.
I got my 2013 50D remapped for £300 and got extra 45 bhp and lots more torque,thanks❤️🏴👍

DPF problems only after 50k miles, gotta love modern engines with all the emissions garbage

How does this X5 compare with the Cayanne V8 4.2 diesel you tunned recently ? In terms of both engine comparison and handling / steering feel.

Yeah, tuning can reduce the smoke significantly

The 4.2 is a well proven engine, the BMW might be a bit sportier.

It's a clutched system so you would burn it out if you ran in our Dyno without it being disconnected.

Nah they're straight 6's. It's the N57 engine, which replaced the M57 motor found in late 90s-early 00s BMWs.

Is there a way to measure turbine speed?
To know when you're turbo is spinning past 100% of the specs set in the documentation.
Not sure these have a sensor but a lot of new cars do. No one has documentation so it's almost irrelevant.

Just wondering if the readings from the Dyno are accurate due to measuring only the rear ... I think the load is different when the X is enabled ..
unless you have linked rollers you will burn the coupling out.
How do you find m50d torque wise compared to Touareg v10

We use 5th gear, pull some fuses and sport Gearbox. They make the same power in every mode. The Dyno mode thing never really works!

Is the Audi 2.7tdi good for tuning?
Tuned mine to 360hp, 650nm. Stock car in B7 and B8 can make 260hp if custom tuned.
not really better with the 3 litre engine as 236 stock 300 on stg 1 map dpf egr and swirl flap delete and remap upto 340 on the stock turbo
340 stock turbo is dreaming. 2.7 is OK, just usually crap gearbox
310- 320 is possible before 2260vk is out of air. Multitronic is crap but they also come with manual.
