It's more than that, TikTok have the power to curate content that would inflame tensions in the West. With China essentially wanting a new world order, this is an incredibly powerful weapon they could leverage in a cold war against the West (that's already started).

It's a private, not public, platform. Shutting it down does not hinder free speech. Because there is no free speech on private platforms. The platform owner has the right to censor communication on the platform however they see fit.

Is that commonly said? I think so, since I've heard it many times. And what I've heard said, is that the Chinese Communist Party censors communication in China regardless of the forum or platform.
Not having been to China and tried to say things not approved of by the Party, I can't speak from firsthand knowledge. But I have seen a lot of people claim to have tried and gotten in trouble for it. Maybe it's all just a huge conspiracy and the Party really is democratic, honest, and cares about the people.

I never downloaded tik-tok, but I know from the redditors I was fighting Russian disinformation with that tik-tok was infested with fake news about Ukraine. Those videos eventually started being cross-posted to RUclips shorts.
These Chinese government has control over what gets posted to tik-tok. You think they aren't going to use that to their advantage? You think they are our friend? Their ongoing military actions say otherwise.

The US government can regulate foreign trade and tariffs. The government has the inherent responsibilities for the security of the United States. Don't count me as a tiktok user even though tiktok videos pop up on my phone ever day. Tens of millions of other people, too, tik tok videos arrive un-invited, un-wanted but I'll bet they are counted in that "100 million" users. NO, tik tok is not useful or "needed" like some claim.
