Buying my first big bike.. A Ducati Monster 796 S2R in Thailand.
I go to some sketchy places at times and regular travel insurance won't always cover me (Especially for long stints away from home). Nice Bike! I was there in Hua Hin in December and rode those same roads on scooters. Really cool to see that ride again
Your Monster is a huge step up from any scooter & I strongly urge you to wear a quality helmet, trainers (not flip flops) & gloves.
I bought a MULTISTRADA V2S three weeks ago & bought a genuine Arai from Arai Bangkok. On longer journeys, I wear leathers.
Shockingly 41 people a DAY die in road accidents in Thailand - most are riders!

I agree completely. Driving standards here are crazy. I bought a good helmet with me from the UK (too many fakes here, if you find something decent at all...) and I'm wearing proper gear on anything other than little journeys in town..
Having said that, you could get wiped out on any bike and any journey here, especially at this time of year....

You are lugging the engine a lot of the time, try to avoid this for the sake of your main- and conrod bearings. This engine has a very light flywheel and is absolutely unhappy below 3k RPM, keeping it above that threshold prolongs the life of the engine and makes for a much smoother experience.
Thanks for that. I'd started to notice this over the last few days and am trying to stay in the lower gears for longer. I'm starting to get used to it a bit now!

@@pg.travels You're welcome. No need to be hesitant when revving a well-maintained engine, those are good for roughly 9k RPM, meaningful power delivery starts at 5k RPM, so plenty to go. Just make sure that valves, belts and oil are in good condition.
Also, since you mentioned the Diavel: It is not air-cooled and never was, it started out with the Testastretta 11° engine, now transitioned to the Desmosedici Stradale. Being picky, but the 796 and 1100 Monsters are oil-cooled, they have internal cooling ducts in the heads specifically for that purpose together with an oil cooler. The 696 lacks the oil cooler.

I noticed it giving off some serious heat when test driving so thought it would be a problem in slow traffic given the heat here but it felt like it would be awesome for long trips.. maybe one for the future. Probably better to gain experience handling this first though lol
@@pg.travels It is only a problem for the rider, very seldom for the bike itself. For me, the M796 has never shown above 4 stripes in the temperature gauge, even in 35°C city traffic, so I doubt that it would overheat elsewhere.
Note that it does not display the oil temperature as one might believe, the sensor sits next to the intake of the rear cylinder, so it is more of the cylinder head temperature it is showing. Hence, a reading of 130°C (you can find the values in your owner's manual) or more is not an issue and no cause for worries.
Love the video. As you are on a tourist visa, where would you store the bike when you have to leave and later come back? Are there storage areas that you can hire to store the bike away?
Yeah, I'm on a tourist visa. No hassle putting it in my name though.
I've got covered, secure parking at my condo. I've heard of long term storage places in tourist areas though so it can be done if you don't have a condo too.

I like it here. Far quieter than Pattaya / Phuket but still has enough touristy things to keep you entertained..
Traffic isn't too bad and it's cheaper than other western friendly towns once you know where to go..
I'll try to do some videos in the next few weeks about here.

Whats your favourite area to live in hua hin?
I think anywhere away from Phetkasim road is ok. Ideally up Soi 112, 102, 88 just in land a bit. Just let's you avoid traffic but you are still close to everything.
There's not really bad areas here though.
