Love that you included the Valley Forge; Silent Running is one of my favorite SFs too.

I always assumed that because the Red Dwarf was a mining ship it was mining that lump of rock. Either built around a particularly valuable asteroid or able to clamp on to new asteroids if operating normally with a full crew.

Red Dwarf was to Sci-Fi as Milwall is to soccer. Love both!

Liberator - I seem to remember several orders to go "Standard by six". I also remember that in Ultraworld, we learn that Liberator was a probe ship, with no crew.

I always thought the rock on Red Dwarf was something to do with the fact it was a mining vessel and was processing the minerals. I'm probably well off the mark...
Great video and some fantastic insights, especially about the bleakness of Red Dwarf. I'm 50 this year and have fantastic memories of watching the original broadcasts (on BBC 2)

I often had the same thought but then someone pointed out to me that Red Dwarf is a cargo ship so that put me back to square one 😂
Thanks for watching and commenting I really appreciate it.

@@thedeclineandfallofbritishsci Think of the red dwarf as a rogue asteroid that collects dust and space debris over its 3 million year sojourn through the universe.

The small rouge sun!! Number one! Great list, good choices. Thanks for posting.

    The Valley Forge is beautiful.

She’s absolutely gorgeous but more than that it’s a perfect balance between practicality and yet still being stylish enough to be visually very interesting to look at.
      Thanks for watching!!!

This was a great list. I don't think that FarScape deserves any complaints - especially with Moia being so amazing.

Some brilliant observations, you make (why am I speaking Yoda!?) and while your Kung Fu is strong, as you predicted, I find I can't entirely agree with your top five, because... (deep breath)
5/ 😳 No, no, and hell no. Damn thing looks like Thunderbird 2 with the wings pulled off!
4/ 👌 Excellent choice, although should be much higher
    3/ 😎 I can't argue on this one
2/ 🙄 Have you lost your marbles! Silent Running is one of my most cherished films, and while the Berkshire, Valley Forge, &... the other one are very fine ships, I wonder if you're being influenced by the significance of her and what she stands for, more than the actual ship, herself, maybe?
1/ 😣 Er....... No. Red Dwarf is something very special. It has thrilled and charmed us for years, but again, for me anyway, the ship itself, although very, very old. And large. Very, very large, is just a large old ship painted mostly red.
    Ps loving your work 😃😉😎🤗

I knew this day would come, my first internet flame war but I always hoped it would be with someone I stood a chance against never for one minute did I expect it to be against someone who is possibly one of the world’s leading experts!!! I feel like I’m the Cat from red dwarf playing words with friends against Lt Cdr Data 🤣

Interesting list, great choice with Silent Running. Where would you rank Lexx?

    • @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci
      @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci  7 месяцев назад +2

Oh boy the Lexx was so close to making this list because it’s such a conceptually interesting ship from a bonkers show so it would probably be at least number 7 in a top 10 list.

Interesting list, I have a soft spot for a few of these ships weirdly myself especially the Planet Express ship and Red Dwarf. I think the ship from Farscape, Moya would be right up there if I was to make my own list though.

      @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci  7 месяцев назад +1

Thanks @VCMR you legend !!!! Moya had to make the list but I find limiting it to five entries sharpens my focus greatly and encourages my ruthlessness as well 🤣

@@thedeclineandfallofbritishsci I recently rewatched the first few seasons of Farscape and it still holds up. Such a weird show that would never get made these days! I actually think Starbug from Red Dwarf would beat out Red Dwarf if I was to make my own list.

    • @thedeclineandfallofbritishsci

A good list! Great to see Silent Running in there.
Liberator, absolutely. Might even be my top choice.
Moya, yup (I may have to rewatch Farscape. It's been a decade since I last went through it all).
However, I never got into Futurama for whatever reason, so I'd swap that out for The Last Starfighter ship... or maybe Dark Star. Though, the Gunstar is maybe a bit too obvious instead of unlikely!?
But Red Dwarf is a totally excellent choice. I always felt that it would be a pretty fun spaceship to exist on in a "smeg hits the fan" scenario. How long before we get a real A.I. Hol or Holly?
Also!... Tip of the hat for the Girl from tomorrow mention! :D I actually watched that through last year on RUclips as a revisit. It was kind of as I remember! Maybe just a bit kid cheesy, but fun!
Speaking of old kids shows, do you remember "the boy from space"? and there was another one about a girl and some alien thing that talked, that was attached to a pole on a barn,,, Like a black rotating device with petals (and a glowing green centre). All very weird childhood viewing... but memory fades as to names/titles.
Was there another weird one called "The Boy Who Couldn't Smile" (or lost his smile)?
...a whole load of B list video ideas there lol. Also, I don't expect all the answers! Though if anyone remembers, please do let me know! :)
Cheers for the vid and best wishes! to you Mr British Sci-fi! :)

Am glad you enjoyed it dude. You can imagine Holly is what we would get if he was built in house by the people at you.gov or something 🤣 children’s sci-fi is such an important but often overlooked genre but the fact we can all remember these little shows sometimes 40 years says much about the writing of them. The boy from space was part of the BBCs look and read strand so it may be possible the series you are looking for was another one of those stories.
Thanks for watching and great to hear from you @waroftheworlds1934
