This video is for more people than you think. I threw out all my hand made dresses when I had an emergency colostomy last year. I lost my confidence, my sew-jo and my style! I'm happy to report that I'm gradually finding patterns again that I love and even if it's just the 1 pattern for now...I can make it in so many different fabrics so it doesn't even matter. Tummy friendly has a whole different meaning to me now 😉 x
@Eternal_Hope_Q so pleased you are regaining your confidence after your colostomy. As time goes on you’ll start to forget it and wear anything and everything, I’ve had mine for over 24 years.
At age 70, I have a tummy I know I'll never get rid of and it's ok. I just made my first empire waist dress, in decades and I love it. It's from a 1970s Simplicity pattern. Tummy issue solved by the empire waist. 😄
Thanks, Ruan. There's those of us with autoimmune conditions where your tum can get distended by 3-4 inches in a day then be gone two days later :/ This is great to accommodate this fluctuation. Really appreciate the ideas!
Mine won’t go down again after a decade but it still leads my neighbours randomly asking me when I am due. I have lived here 15 years and due to infertility issues it is upsetting so this video is essential suggestions for me.
Gotta say it did make me smile when you started with an itchy snitch (nose) and then went straight in to the first pattern from itch to stitch 😆(sorry if it's just me!) Loved all the patterns - thanks for putting together this collection for us 👏
Only just found your channel and so glad I have. I have been wanting to make my own clothes for ages but never took the plunge. Since having breast surgery finding the right clothes has become a real chore. Am now going to have a go at the Pleiades 2 and Fleetwood Frock. Thank you for giving the inspiration to do this.
Just found your channel today, and a minute into this video I clearly realized that you were talking to me. Instead of bumbling forward with styles that I wished would look good on me, your 'tummy friendly' vid was so clear. Love your delivery, your style, your straightforward approach to life and sewing.
Can HIGHLY recommend the Tie Dress! I have made 4. They are so tummy friendly, I was able to wear them as maternity dresses 😅 I also made one in the red/pink viscose from Rainbow fabrics (that you have!) and made it for a wedding. Such a great pattern, its sooo flattering!! Love this video xx
Love the simplicity dress…. I love how that looks! I think these all appeal to apple and pear because they all either skim or give the appearance of a waist 😊 thank you for your ‘Talky talky talky’ vlog as always ❤ now to ‘Walky walky walky’ to the housework 😞 x
I love your recommendations - I made the Tie Dress in a blackberry viscose and it is wonderful. An easy make and can be worn to a smart work do, an evening out or just a casual day dress. It might be the most versatile item I have ever made. The ties are attached so they do need tying but you can tie them as loosely or as tightly as you like. - at the back/front or at the side. I think I would like the Pleides dress too so one to think about. Thanks for all your research 😎❤
Ruan you are so lovely, thank you for your ubiquitous honesty!! (OK, I knew that one but there are many others that would have stumped me!) Totally agree on double gauze.
Thank you so much! I love these patterns, and you're right about just feeling comfortable. I have a metabolic condition that can see my middle expand by 2-3" within an hour...so all of these are just great. I have gifts to sew first, but you can bet 2025 is the year of the beautiful dress! If I may suggest, maybe a "Tummy Friendly" pair of trousers? Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Love the Ellery dress from swim style patterns, priya dress from tammy handmade and the roscoe dress from true bias. Ooo and the Estelle dress from sew over it ❤
Your research in these videos is wonderful. So helpful and inspiring. Thank you so much! I'm an empire waist enthusiast but the options you've presented are very interesting to consider.
OH! Lovely choices!! I have to make the "Itch to Stitch" pattern, she drafts such lovely patterns-also the "Pleaides" dress I think I own that one, actually, it has been on my "to do list" for a while!! Thank you for addressing a problem that so many of us have-mine is different, in that I virtually have no "midriff bulge", but I am short waisted, and my actual abdomen juts out quite a bit below my waist-which really bothers me-(don't want to look pregnant, when I am THIS age-lol). When I was younger like you, I never had a tummy, so my weight has shifted, ugh!! Keep up the great informative an entertaining videos!! I am in the U.S.A.-(wish I was where you are), and you ladies are so much fun to watch; I love you U.K. folks!! I have relatives in Germany, but never been! Anyway, have a great day, Ruan!
I also have the Mood Sewciety pattern. It reminds me of a maxi dress that I used to have. I also have larger tummy area and always thought the blouse-y look disguised it a bit. I still need to find a fabric, but can’t wait to get started! This was a great video! 🎉🥰
Thanks so much Ruan, its just like you made this vlog just for me! I have just the same tummy issue and dress patterns are the most difficult to find to suit my shape. Some great suggestions here so thank you!
Thank you for sharing these patterns. I just finished the Sew Different Fleetwood Frock and love it. I can get away with wearing it with a jean jacket or a sweater during our mild winter.
Hi Ruan, a great vlog as always 😊 I have a similar body shape and my most favourite dress is the Toaster sweater dress as I find it gives just a little shaping without clinging to my tummy!!! I’m just about to cut out my 3rd ❤
Thank you for your suggestions. I really like the Fleetwood frock and thinking how nice that would be for a hot family holiday next summer. I suffer with a stomach issue that I can’t control and it really affects what I wear, just in case it flares up. These ideas were really helpful.
@@theyorkshiresewgirl it’s similar to the chalk and notch fringe dress which I love and have made 4, but the fringe doesn’t have long sleeves. I’ve tried to add sleeves…. Disaster 😬.
Can definitely recommend the Sewing Therapy dress, it is so easy to make. I actually sized down at least 2 sizes from my measurements and its still roomy. Made 3 so far and will be naking more
Great ideas. I really like the pinafore style dress and the last one. I am not so experienced a sewer to reccomend a dress. But I like what you have chosen. Well done.
Great dresses Ruan. I’m an hourglass shape but with meno tummy so don’t want to draw attention to it! I love the look of that Mood dress - I had one like that years ago and it was great for skimming the area.
I love the take the chance tiered shirt dress from pattern emporium. Lots of tummy room. Great pattern suggestions. I like the one that can be worn as a pinafore and pelaides one.
Lovely dresses all of them, I´m gonna make the Tie Dress for christmas. My favorite dress pattern over all is the Box Pleat Dress from The Assembly Line, it´s a great tummy friendly dress with big pockets!
Thanks for these interesting and stylish patterns. I had not come across them before. I have purchased the Tie Dress and am looking forward to giving it a go!
Such a welcome topic, Ruan. Thank you. I like mccalls m7969 as it’s more fired at the top then flares. You can have it loose and floaty or belt it for shape. Myosotis by Deer and Doe and the Lyra and Nell from Tilly also are great (again, loose or belted).
This was great - the first 4 patterns were new to me and I love them all. The Plaides is one of my faves - you can also do the button placket just to the waist as a hack
Your videos always put a smile on my face. Thank you for that in these dark times. Your choices are spot on. I feared you would choose these baby doll patterns which make you look like being pregnant. I have got the tie dress pattern and it is high on my list.
You are so welcome. Yes I think some people would go straight to those kind of dresses but I think there’s plenty of styles out there that can work for certain body types 😊
Thanks for some great suggestions 🌸 I made the “ Orange “ dress by deer & doe.. very similar to you simplicity pattern… I made it in a midnight blue bamboo jersey, and I loove it. If I remember correct it does have cup sizes.. i sewed Up a size 48💖💖💖
I'd add the Joni dress from Tilly's Stretch! book too. Like the Fleetwood (which I hadn't seen before, thank you for sharing), it's a slight empire line but flares out dramatically past the tum (Tilly has a maternity hack for it, but it doesn't look like a maternity frock- always a hazard when wearing an empire line), but it's stretchy. Warning: fabric hungry (it's a full circle skirt), and back when it was published Tilly's books didn't have a great size range, but thought I'd share as so many sewists will have this book already.
Hi Ruan - love the French Poetry dress and you should definitely make it so we can see it on you as I love that dress and would make it if you do - go for it ❤
@theyorkshiresewgirl I'm also a sewist who has developed a tummy with age and have struggled to find patterns, so thank you for this. I will be checking out empire line patterns. Another Sew Different pattern I think will work is the Tulip dress, which has long and short sleeve options and is very easy to make. I've also just subscribed.
Great pattern ideas Ruan! I have the freebie, have had it a LOOONNGG time without sewing it up! I really like the second last one that was in Red in the photo, I have a light weight merlot coloured micro cord that would look cute in that and or a viscose twill! I like the idea of the sundress one too with a high neck long sleeve top under it!
Hi Ruan, another interesting video. I really like the Venice knit dress from style arc it’s a nice fit around the bodice and then flares out over the middle with some interesting (and eye diverting) asymmetrical shapes.
The Pleiades 2 is now in my stash hub wishlist! I went to the Creative Craft Show and visited the lovely Sam on the Sew Different stand (not in the day she wore that dress, sadly) and the patterns were absolutely gorgeous when you see the samples. I’ve got a ton in my wishlist which I’ll work my way through. The Riley smock and Tuk Tuk dress also look very tummy friendly.
I love them all. What a wonderful set of choices you’ve made. My favorite is the French Poetry pattern. And I was thinking you don’t have to add buttonholes you could use snap closures! Some thing very chic like pearl snaps. I have to order this dress. ❤🤗
Ooh, tummy friendly part wear ideas would be great Ruan. Can you include tops pease? I just hate myself in dresses. Not that it stops me watching content about dress patterns 😂 Mainly in the hope of seeing one that can be made into a top though 🤷🏼♀️ Great video as always 💞💞
Tie dress pattern. First one I made was a size 22 which I what I normally sew, but the dress was HUGE. Looked like a sack. Next one I made was a size 12. It fit me much better. So I would suggest you look at the finished measurements and decide how much ease you would like before you choose your size. Sews up quickly. Love the video instructions.
Some really nice patterns there. Love the first one, the tie dress and the free one looks interesting as well. Thank you. Recently found you and I love your channel already. You've got a really nice voice to listen to. 😊
Fabulous dress choices- like you, I just need to get with the Plaides- had the pattern a long time…..🤔. Some others I haven’t seen before- my wish list has just got longer😮. My go to pattern last year was the Southbank but am experimenting more this winter. You have spurred me on. Thank you. Happy Sewing. Lynne
Aww thanks for the lovely shout out, love the tie dress 🥰 also love the mood sewciety mallow dress even though I'd be a bit nervous about the amount of leg flashed... good idea to make a wintery one with some good old thick tights, I'm so racy 🤣🤣🤣
Ooh, once you started on the Fleetwood dress, I thought that you really should do the pleiades dresses as they are really slimming at just under the bust, you really do not notice the mum tum. I have made both 1 and 2. One in a SHJ cotton and one in a fabric godmother linen viscose. Although that one needs me to redo the button placket. It's not my best. You got me thinking about that Fleetwood dress though. I am only short so although it says that you need 3m, I am wondering whether I can get it out if my BTPD denim. I also managed to sew something today. My poor rib was a bit sore but I did it. I made the trudie turtleneck in a 1st for fabrics cotton jersey. Woo hoo. Now I know that it fits, I can lay it under my fav Summer jersey dress and make it a winter version.
Hallo I’ve just found your channel I too am diamond shape and you hav give me some ideas,a winter dress will be great I too from Yorkshire where have you been,,I’m wanting to get a serger but I’ve never used one but I want that better finish I’ll look at the lights too luv teresa

The tie dress is a brilliant one. I made it & it feels so flattering. Lots of people tried it on at my sewing social & it literally suited everyone 🤩

Yes absolutely. Hoping to do tops/trousers/jumpsuits and blouses 🤞
Brill vlog ruan 😊
Thank you!
Good advice 👍🏼
Some really nice patterns there. Love the first one, the tie dress and the free one looks interesting as well. Thank you. Recently found you and I love your channel already. You've got a really nice voice to listen to. 😊
So glad you’ve joined us 🤗
Fabulous dress choices- like you, I just need to get with the Plaides- had the pattern a long time…..🤔. Some others I haven’t seen before- my wish list has just got longer😮. My go to pattern last year was the Southbank but am experimenting more this winter. You have spurred me on. Thank you. Happy Sewing. Lynne
Ooh I do love a good Southbank though! x
Aww thanks for the lovely shout out, love the tie dress 🥰 also love the mood sewciety mallow dress even though I'd be a bit nervous about the amount of leg flashed... good idea to make a wintery one with some good old thick tights, I'm so racy 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣. Your tie dresses are beautiful 😍
Thanks
Welcome 🤗
Lovely ideas
Thank you ☺️
Good video. I will be anxious to see what you make. I am similar to you. I don’t like things to cling to my middle.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video Ruan 🙏
I love the look of the Pleiades 2, haven’t come across that pattern company before 🤩
You’re welcome 😊 it’s a lovely pattern isn’t it!
So glad you’re getting back to sewing 🥳
And yes I think you’d manage it out of 2.5 metres 👍🏼
Thanks duckie, I've had my eyes on the deer and doe orage which is similar to your Simplicity pic. Ahem .....get that pleides made up!😊
He he. I will do one day 🤪
Loving the Pleiades 2 😍
It’s beautiful isn’t it!
