I just found you on a whim. I haven’t even begun to finish this video. But “Diamond shape” just won me over for life!!! You just made this middle aged, plump, Diamond sparkle this morning and I’m already soo happy!!! 🤣😂🤣❤️❤️❤️
I love the apron pinafore. My body shape changed so much after my surgery. I struggled with this mentally and emotionally. I call my shape cylinder because my bust and waist are the same size. Once I got over myself, I started to just experiment. I make what I like and buy clothes that make me happy 😊. I must say I look “absolutely marvelous” 🤩. I love your videos. They’re thoughtful, inspiring and fun. Thank you for sharing! Your friend Diane ❤
When the Victoria and Albert (V&A) museum had the Mary quant display they included a free pattern on their website for a Mary Quant style dress that could easily be a pinafore style dress or add sleeves to it as a fake layered pinafore dress. I think it’s still there so worth a look. ❤
I love a pinafore, comfort over style for me! Big pockets and chunky corduroy, Helen;s Closet York Pinafore, it’s not the classic style but it’s definitely ‘tummy friendly’ and I’m an apple too (straight torso!) I also like Made 4 Mermaids Juniper ‘jumper’ that’s great in a stretchy cord. (Love, love, love the joyous sounds in the background, thank you!)
Hi Ruan, I like the Merchant & Mills Whittaker pinafore especially after watching Ruth McIntyre's vlog when she made her lovely ginger cord one. I had some chocolate brown corduroy in my stash and have it cut out ready to sew. Must get a wiggle on.
Great video as always! I am a diamond shape too (love that description, much better than an apple) and have made 3 York pinafores, they are fab and would definately suit you x
I really like the idea of a pinafore so looking forward to seeing your picks. I am not diamond shaped, but I am very conscious of how much weight I have put on around the tummy area. My waist is disappearing 😮😘
I have been really in love with the pinafore look lately and I keep looking in my closet for one and not finding one, DARN IT! 🤣 So thank you so much for this video, I'm super excited to try some of these out. I'm also very much "diamond shaped" so if you've got other tips n tricks for gauging and fitting, I would love to hear them. Subscribed!
I like the Simplicity pattern S9122 the "Dottie Angel" paper pattern going from size 6-8 to 22-24 bust 32/34 - 48/50. It has slightly capped sleeves and a nice tieback.
Hello from Germany! I recently came across a pattern company called Anna Rose patterns. They are French but have English instructions as well. I love their pinafore patterns called Galo and Reyna. Have a look!
I made the Elbe steele pinafore and it came out beautiful, with a few adjustments. However it was a bit big and I have it away and now I've put on weight I would like it back! I made it in a lightweight burgundy suiting and it looked really smart.
Pinafores are at the top of my sewing list. Chronic illness has meant I've needed to rethink my wardrobe, so although I'm not a diamond shape, I don't want anything tight around the middle. Top of my pinafore list is the Petrichor by Sew Liberated, I also have their Penny pinafore which also fits the bill. Helen's Closet York is not a style I'm drawn to, but the amount of ways it can be hacked into something I would wear persuaded me to buy it! I've tried TaTB Cleo and also hated how it looked on me 💜
I love these videos! I have wanted a pinafore for some time . A couple of years ago I was talking about them and my daughter was horrified. I said everyone is making them. Her reply was ,"in England!". I wish sewing was as popular here in the USA . I'm quite the novelty, especially with my granddaughter's school, where the question of the day is "Another Grandma made outfit?" You've convinced me that maybe a grandma can get away with wearing a pinefore.
Also in the USA here! I would have said that in my 50s, I'm too old for a pinafore, but really, we should wear what we like! And I liked some of these patterns!
I’m in the U.S. also and agree that sewing isn’t popular here. Don’t you wish we had all the sewing expos they have in England. If only I could just pop over to attend!
I’m in the US also. I’m 72 years young and I still wear pinafores. It just has to be the right style pinafore. And I prefer Midi or Maxi length (can’t be bothered with worrying about how I sit, bend over, etc.) I have great-grandchildren that I need to play in the floor with. LOL!!!
All lovely, and such a sensitive subject.. Thank you for addressing this! I have to say , that number one is adorable, but I do wonder about the comfort of a knot between my shoulders.
Thank you for sharing your research! I am a pearshape that loves pinafore dresses. To me the Portsmouth from Sussex Seamstress has been a good choice. I find the princess seams quite flattering 😊
Thanks Ruan, this information is really helpful. I love pinafore dresses, but now in my 60’s with a tummy area I’m not happy about and want comfort but nice clothes. I’m much shorter than you and like long length dresses. I will be very interested to see how you get along with the pinafore dresses. ❤❤
Thank you so much for this vlog! I am exactly the same, made the TATB Cleo and, even though other people told me I looked great, I just didn't feel right in it. Felt like a Tellytubby hahaha. I've had babycord fabric in my stash for literally years to make a pinafore, maybe the TATB Olive, but been so scared in case I didn't like it again. This has inspired me to give it a go, (or at least a toile!), and I adore the Milton Pinafore, will definitely give that one a go! Thank you for the inspiration
Love your ideas and inspiration. I've never wore a pinafore!! As a woman over 60 i didn't think i could but maybe 😅😅( thanks to you) . I really, really enjoyed your sons laughter. A tonic ❤
This is the video I was looking for, thanks Ruan! In my mid 40s and rounder in the middle too, but I love a pinafore. I think they’re simple but cute and I love that you can layer them and have a cosy autumn/winter dress. The Fibre Mood dress looks great, I think I’ll be adding that to my autumn makes list. Can’t wait to see what you make!
Hey Ruan, great vlog all about the Pinafore dress. I’m with you I love the look of them, however being a diamond shape as you are, I struggle with the fit around the middle/tummy area. Sew Me Something have a pinafore pattern Perdita, I have a paper copy but not had the courage to make it up yet. Bish, bash bosh I think it’s time to go for it 😊 Happy sewing 🧵 xx
I made the York pinafore twice! I have a Mom tummy and at 70 I'm trying to work with it, not just ignore it. So! One York in a medium weight cord and I fell in love. The second one is in a med to heavy weight linen with a large scale floral print. They are just awesome. So much in fact that I had decided to look for some other ideas. Your video's timing couldn't be better!
Hi Ruan. There are some lovely little details in these dresses. But nowadays, I'd hate struggling with fiddiley stuff like tying a bow in the middle of my back or sitting on buttons from a back button placket. 🙄 A-line dresses can be very flattering when you have a defined waist but I'd caution against using a too-structured fabric, as this pronounces the shape. Since you want more ease in the tummy area, I actually like the pattern that was more narrow at the bottom. I'm sure what ever you choose, will be fab. BTW, bib style garments look silly going over my chest too, so I liked the deeper V dresses. Have fun choosing!
Great video. My tummy is not flat at all. I am currently awaiting the release of love notions pianoforte pinafore. It look like my style with massive pockets!
I just got to meet/talk with Helen (Helen’s Closet) and Caroline (Blackbird Fabrics) at Stitchfest in Portland. They did a live broadcast from the Venue as well. Eager to see what you make. I love pinafores (jumpers on our side of the pond, LOL). Hugs from Oregon Ruan - happy sewing.
I love a pinafore, especially my york in navy corduroy. I've just got a denim one in the charity shop as well. It has a cool detail of double rows of buttons at the waist so can be let out like you were saying for one of the patterns. Such a great idea.
I made the Milton pinafore from a thick brown linen and it was quite easy. Although I'm a smaller size, I do have a larger bust, so I ended up using the bodice of larger size band and the skirt from the smaller. Worked like a charm!
Nice pattern suggestions! I fell in love with the first on with the bow at the back 😍 Must make that I feel. I love pinafores and my most made is drafted from a simple A-line sleeveless top that I just lengthened and put a button placket down the front (and patch pockets of course) My second favourite is York, but I have made it more A-lined as I don’t like the tulip shape. I also adjusted the front neckline to something in between the two options. I love it now and plan on making more. I also have the tummy issue so these suggestions work very well for that. I also have a large bust but York works for that too.
Great video, I have made view A of the Steele pinafore and the skill level is accurate particularly around the pockets/waist area. Its a lovely pattern.
Hello Ruan. Thank you for another great video. Jennifer Lauren has three gorgeous pinafore patterns that you may like, they are 'Georgie', 'Pippi' 'Dulcie', and 'Ivy' (I have made that one), you will love these patterns and Jennifer Lauren patterns are well drafted and the instructions are excellent. Happy sewing and love to Simba
Hi Ruan, loved this video. I love the steel pinafore, I’ve made a few and find them a flattering fit over my large tum, I’ve done a button strap version too as the ties are a great feature but a bit unsightly under a cardigan. It looks good over nice blouses too with plenty of room for big sleeves, I’ve made a coordinating fpc patina which looks nice. The penny pinafore from sew liberated is nice as well with some pleated pockets on the back. Looking forward to seeing what you make
Sew over it have just realised a new pinafore pattern can't remember the name might be worth a look PS I loved hearing your son in the background made me smile z
What an awesome video!! I loved every speck of it!!! I found the stitch sisters during lockdown, and they did an awesome video on the Pippi Pinafore by Jennifer Lauren Handmade. I bought it straight away. I am still eager to make it. It has nice shaping over the chest. It does have a waistband, but the skirt flares out, so I like the silhouette and still want to try it out. I was so excited when I recently heard you talking about the diamond body shape. I related to that instantly. My proportions are very similar to yours. Being a diamond is different than being an apple.
The Kaya fibre mood puts me in mind of one I had in the 60s but mine was straighter with a wide black belt that went around my hips, no way today 😂😂, but a great memories regards Diana from NZ 🎉❤🎉🐸🐸
I have a sway back that accentuates my toosh and also makes me look rounder that a wine barrel 😂 Id love a flat back but nope... Also having had 3 children has left me with a little mum tum so throw that in with a sway back has me avoiding pinafores and overalls. Hahahaha we all love to hear kids having a good time, never apologise. 💕💕
I really love all my Apron pinafores, especially the denim one. I added extra jeans buttons to make it more adjustable. Hangs beautifully, and the shape of the panels and pockets gives a nice hourglass figure not matter what your shape. Made one for my 90 year old mum who wears it each winter. And she’s always elegant and inspiring. I’ve made numerous Yorks. I do bring in the waist slightly and straighten the side seams as the cocoon shape is not for me. I made it an A line. I made one in cord in the shorter length (way too short for me as a tall girl)… and added a horizontal panel of cord. Mum liked it so much I made it for her too, and my sister in law too. All in navy cord with bias tape in orange 😂 As this is such a quick sew, and not too fabric hungry I’d recommend making the York first.
I find a-lines create extra volume down the side of the garment below the knee. This doesn’t happen if you are hippy. I have to take a wedge out of the side that gets narrower up to the hip, to make the garment hang properly on me. I’m a narrow hips, flat butt with a tummy shape. Surprisingly, (I didn’t think I’d like any pinafore patterns) I do like the first pattern and the peppermint pattern.
Just made the Cleo and to fit my hips- I probably need to grade to my waist and bust but then worried I won’t be able to get it on. The one you can let out at the back sounds amazing as I’m a bloater!
Great vlog! I recently made the free Tiana’s Closet Violet Pinafore Dress and it was a pretty simple sew and can be made reversible (which I made). Sizing was a challenge and it turned out huge but it was a pretty good dupe for a Nobody’s Child one and would try it again but size down.
Thank you for the round up. I have similar struggles but would like to make one. I am leaving towards the Seamwork Dani, which is similar to the Peppermint magazine dress.
I love a good pinafore and am a fan of the Helens Closet York - I have two and I've made both in a stretch denim and cord which I think helps with comfort. I really am loving the look of the Fibre mood one - reminds me of the Ora Pinafore from Soften Studio. I'm currently pregnant and think I could get away with that one, plus I love a deep V! I also want to shout out the Knox pinafore from Seamwork. It's very simple and modern and has a cool look about it. Excited to see what you make and thanks for the roundup! ☺️
Great vlog Ruan...so helpful. I'm not really a denim girl and already have Not Your Daughter's Jeans that fit (including my tummy with stretch) and come in fun colors. So...I was disappointed with denim in our heavy Beyond the Pink Door subscription box. Still, Andrea always gives us great quality fabrics and I don't want to waste it just like I didn't want to waste the orange corduroy...not my color but great quality fabric. I started thinking about using it for bags ( no...too much) or pinafores and then thought a pinafore wouldn't look great on me. I think the Helen's Closet one might be ok. The neckline is low enough and scooped that I could wear something bright and fun and more my style underneath. Love the pockets and I know her instructions are awesome. Appreciate you and all this research. xx Karen
Since watching your video I’ve bought some fabric to make a Steele pinafore, hadn’t seen this one before, it’s gorgeous. I did see the Ray pinafore by Paper Theory has just been released, looks like a tummy skimming style too. Thanks so much for your videos, love them!
I love a pinafore but I’m a pear so worry it will be triangular 😂 and I have one pattern that just looks like an oversized waistcoat and I think it would look great but I’m put off because I have to trace it 😅 lots of choices thank you!
Great research Ruan. I feel similarly about close fitting clothes as I keep bloating. I have the York pinafore so may try that but years ago I thought I’d make the Cocoon dress by Simple sew as a pinafore in cord. It takes very little fabric and that sleeveless version could work well. 😊
Recommend the Studio Tunic from Sew Liberated. Falls away from the body, but I’ve made 2 of them cuz of the pockets. Big pockets! Anyway, you can’t go wrong, I think it will look just fine. Some lovely pinafores you’ve outlined. I also made a pinafore from a vintage 70’s pattern I liked a lot. Was popular then, too.
I don‘t wear pinafores as in my opinion they are a garment for children or young girls but I must admit I am quite drawn to the fibremood one. I think I will give it a try.
My favourite is the Penelope. It has the traditional dungaree dress look that I like and no waist seam. I have a self drafted dress similar to the Kaya that I wear at home when I'm on my period, it's so comfy but not very flattering on me in my opinion. But maybe that's because it started it's life as a plaid flannel sheet lol.
Loved this type of video. I am looking for a pinafore dress also. Lined i think too. Maybe the wittaker from m &m. Going to look up other recommendations too!
Great vlog! It really got me thinking about preconceived ideas on what I think suits me and what doesn’t. I have always been fairly hour glass shaped but now in peri menopause it’s become more ⛄️ snowman shaped 🤭🤭🤭. I struggle with the thicker waist line and I always focus on it and think everything makes me look huge. At a standard RTW size 16 it’s only just really into plus sized. Anyway what I was going to say was that when it comes down to design, there’s not that much separating a slip dress from a pinafore (or jumper dress in the US). So maybe you could look at your preferred slip dress designs as to what look you prefer on you and use it as a guide? I guess you could use a slip pattern in a warmer fabric and size up a smidge… being careful of shoulder width and strap placement. It worth a dive into at least. Ok, cup of tea time… I’m off to melt a bit 🤣😂🤣🤪 ⛄️
Love this video because I also want to make a pinafore but have not yet. Really like your selection. The Fibre Mood one is so cute. Another I like is a Laura Ashley 80’s design M8318 (McCalls).
Hi Ruan... have you seen the Knox pinifore ??? Its really cute n I thought I'd give it a try... you reminded me of the Peppermint one... its last 1 you pointed out I thought I'd try that one too... its coming on winter in Montana USA so 1 of thoses in corduroy n turtle neck would be snuggly... cant wait to see yours 🎉
I have watched you for a long time, and then suddenly you no longer came up on my Notifications or Home Page, even though I was subscribed and had clicked the bell. Anyway, thankfully I have found you again. I am looking forward to binge watching the videos I have missed.
I absolutely know how self conscious you can be about that tummy bulge even tho my shape has changed a lot over the last year so fantastic idea for a vlog series, Alex judge has made the Steele pinafore, she wore it to sew down dewsbury and I promptly bought it because it’s bloody gorgeous
Hello again, bobbly girl! 😊👏 You are great fun! I think you certainly will make a pinafore dress. ❤️ can’t wait. Good luck, Ruan!😊👏👏👏❤️ Hug from Norway 😊🇳🇴
The Kaya looks a lot like Soften Studio's pinafore dress, which has been around for some time. I've made it a couple of times and it's really well drafted
I’ve made the Elbe Textiles Steele pinafore twice and it is really flattering and comfortable to wear for diamond shape ladies. I’ve made it in a Tencel twill and babycord and they both worked well. I altered the straps because I thought the bow would be hard to tie at the back. I put buttons at the front of the babycord one and tied at the front for the other. I’ve also made the Helen’s Closet Yorke pinafore. It was a quick and easy make and looked lovely except for my mistake with the sizing. I thought the measurements for my size were far to big so sized down. Should have looked more closely at the picture as it’s meant to be a loose cocoon shape.
I’ve made both too, and made the York more of an A line. I agree that changing the straps on the Steele makes it more wearable. On my cord one, I made the straps go through button holes at the front, then used metal snaps so I could change the length if I want to. Also did snaps on the side after adding a facing so there was no gap. The bright red lightweight cord I used goes with lots of winter stuff when I travelled to UK last year. It is loose on the waist, but hangs nicely too.
I would love to see you do an entire “tummy friendly” series.
Ooo yes please
The happy child noises are Adorable
🥰🥰
I just found you on a whim. I haven’t even begun to finish this video. But “Diamond shape” just won me over for life!!! You just made this middle aged, plump, Diamond sparkle this morning and I’m already soo happy!!! 🤣😂🤣❤️❤️❤️
I love it. I heard someone describe her body type as a potato, as opposed to a pear or an apple. Lol. Diamond is great!
Yay! 💎
I love Sew Liberated's Petrichor Pinafore. Very size inclusive and clearly written.
Ooh will go take a look! 👍🏼
I love the apron pinafore. My body shape changed so much after my surgery. I struggled with this mentally and emotionally. I call my shape cylinder because my bust and waist are the same size. Thanks for this as my tummy is my biggest issue when it comes to making clothes x
It's what's holding me back in selecting patterns!
I like the Simplicity pattern S9122 the "Dottie Angel" paper pattern going from size 6-8 to 22-24 bust 32/34 - 48/50. It has slightly capped sleeves and a nice tieback.

York York York every time - I’m the same shape as you - I’ve made in chunky cord/ denim / canvas / linen - also lightweight summer cottons x Cathy B

Love this video - lots of inspo! Def want to make one of these up- just need to choose! 😊
Great video, I have made view A of the Steele pinafore and the skill level is accurate particularly around the pockets/waist area. Its a lovely pattern.
Jennifer Lauren handmade has a view pinafore patterns also
Looking forward to seeing your fibre mood pinafore. I have never made anything by them, but quite drawn to that pinafore. 🤩
Love this type of video! I honestly don’t know how you’re going to pick a pattern. They all look lovely .
I have never made one but my grandmother made one for me similar to the assembly line one. They all look great.
I have a few 1970s pinafore patterns that are A-line and work well. They're often a cheaper alternative.
😻
Hi Ruan, loved this video. I love the steel pinafore, I’ve made a few and find them a flattering fit over my large tum, I’ve done a button strap version too as the ties are a great feature but a bit unsightly under a cardigan. It looks good over nice blouses too with plenty of room for big sleeves, I’ve made a coordinating fpc patina which looks nice. The penny pinafore from sew liberated is nice as well with some pleated pockets on the back. Looking forward to seeing what you make
Looking forward to seeing your finished garment!
Love these vlogs Ruan. I have a Russafa jacket traced off and ready to cut out following the jacket one and looking forward to sewing it up ❤️❤️ xxx
I have 2 Sew Liberated patterns on my to sew list: the Studio Tunic and the penny pinafore.
They might fit your bill too.
Ooh I’ll have a look!
Sew over it have just realised a new pinafore pattern can't remember the name might be worth a look
PS I loved hearing your son in the background made me smile z
What an awesome video!! I loved every speck of it!!!
I found the stitch sisters during lockdown, and they did an awesome video on the Pippi Pinafore by Jennifer Lauren Handmade. I bought it straight away. I am still eager to make it. It has nice shaping over the chest. It does have a waistband, but the skirt flares out, so I like the silhouette and still want to try it out.
I was so excited when I recently heard you talking about the diamond body shape. I related to that instantly. My proportions are very similar to yours. Being a diamond is different than being an apple.
💎
Love this 🥰
I find a-lines create extra volume down the side of the garment below the knee.
I have to agree about Fibre mood! I actually sent for the latest magazine. Lets hope I'm up to tracing out!
Good luck 🤞
Great vlog! I recently made the free Tiana’s Closet Violet Pinafore Dress and it was a pretty simple sew and can be made reversible (which I made). Sizing was a challenge and it turned out huge but it was a pretty good dupe for a Nobody’s Child one and would try it again but size down.
Great vlog Ruan. The Kaya is my favourite out of them all so I’m looking forward to see it made up 😍
Just discovered you. Your personality is so cute! Loved the joyful screaming interruptions from your child. Please never edit that out 😂
Thank you so much!! ☺️
Thank you for the round up. I have similar struggles but would like to make one. I am leaving towards the Seamwork Dani, which is similar to the Peppermint magazine dress.
Yes yes! To the Kaya with the leopard 🐆 can’t wait to see it! ❤
I like that Elbe Textiles one, I hadn't seen that one before.
I love Petrichor pinafore from Sew Liberated. Great for tummies 😅
Brilliant, you do all the work for us! Thank you . Ive just bought two of your pattern recommendations ☺
Glad you like them!
Thanks for sharing Ruan. 🧶🌈🍓💙
Thanks for watching!
Yes the Knox is a lovely one too 😍
Great vlog Ruan...so helpful.
You’re welcome 😊
I like the first and last ones!
I agree on the age-appropriateness. Also, I don't think pinafores look good on my curvy hourglass body with big bust.
Paper Theory Patterns in NZ have just released the Ray Pinafore. Features top stitching, adjustable straps & 70’s vibes.
This made me giggle 🤭
Welcome back 🥰
I like the look of the Soften Studio Ora Pinafore dress, but I haven't made it. It long with a V neck front and back, and it has pockets. 😀
Thanks ever so much.
😊
I absolutely know how self conscious you can be about that tummy bulge even tho my shape has changed a lot over the last year so fantastic idea for a vlog series, Alex judge has made the Steele pinafore, she wore it to sew down dewsbury and I promptly bought it because it’s bloody gorgeous
Hello again, bobbly girl! 😊👏
You are great fun!
I think you certainly will make a pinafore dress. ❤️ can’t wait. Good luck, Ruan!😊👏👏👏❤️
Hug from Norway 😊🇳🇴
Thank you! 😊
The Kaya looks a lot like Soften Studio's pinafore dress, which has been around for some time. I've made it a couple of times and it's really well drafted
Petrichor Pinafore from Sew Liberated is my tummy disguise favourite... but I love to get more tips!
Will be great to see what you make
