Thanks for the video Chris. That was a very tight lift bay but all went well. Nice reunion, a lot has happened since then and I hope things are easier for you guys now. Andy UK
Hi Andy, a lot has happened since then, hasn't it just! The three of us are together and that is what matters most. We hope you and yours are all well. Cheers, Chris 👍
One idea is to mark your rail where the straps should go. This will help avoid lifting the sail drive every time you haul out. I have strap marks on my toe rails.
Very nice set, my friend. I really enjoyed the nine. Subscribed since the cockpit ones and waiting for the next one. Congratulation for your first solo!
Thank you Chris! Great video - your narration is very helpful. I am just starting sailing and you provide great guidance/context. I went for a solo sail in the Chesapeake Bay this weekend and wish I would have seen this video on how to leave the slip before I left. I avoided other boats and ballards but it wasn’t pretty!
Great job on the series! You actually did quite well; fine decision making and sailing. Everyone makes errors, and the few you made were reasonable. The main thing is you conveyed your sense of caution when need be, and confidence when you arrived at a personal goal and then passed it. Well done!
Thanks a lot Chris, I watched with interest the video series of your solo sailing. I am sure that many (young) sailors will find it extremely useful, both to see and understand many real situations typical of an adventure like yours. The most important thing you have shown is that solo sailing is feasible even without experience thanks to good preparation and a lot of humility. You have all my respect, I tell you with my heart and as an old sailor who started like you forty years ago. Good boy! I wish you a lot of beautiful things to live with your great family. Ciao anche a Rossella e alla piccola Emma. Fair winds for your lives 😘
Great video & well done! Hope all 3 of you are safe and well. Hopefully sailing can happen one day, but being with your loved ones is even more important. Fair winds & hopefully many more episodes 🙏
I was hoping for an answer to the oyster/ pearl question in the comments but only noticed a LOT of "pearls of wisdom" 😅 I loved seeing your reunion with your loved ones and always appreciate how you share your adventures with humility and a genuine desire to be of service to others! ❤
Hi Janise! I read up on that while I was editing - in theory any one of those oysters could have a pearl inside, but you would probably have to open about 12,000 oysters to find a naturally occuring pearl. (This is based on some limited internet resading rather than any serous reserch, so I am ready to be corrected by anyone reading this who has more knowledge on the subject) Your comments always make our day, thank you! Love to you and all the gang, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Hi Chris, Rossella and baby Emma. Great video Chris, that lift out looked a bit iffy. I have heard that some solo sailors trail a rope behind. not sure thats a good idea or not. Your thoughts on that. Like the idea of the PLB and a good price too. Cant wait to see you all on Britaly again :)
Hi Vince! It was actually really easy in the end but I was a bit unsure before doing it for the first time. I would be a lot more confident doing it again now. I think making sure you stay on board is the better way to stay safe and I will be modifying Britaly with very strong anchor points close to the centreline of the boat, so we can have jackstays which definitely keep us on board no matter what. The PLB is a good insurance policy and can be used for other things too (mountaineering, climbing, etc. at home or abroad). The battery lasts 6 years then you can get a replacement, so the amortised cost is minimal. Enjoy being on the boat again and thank you for helping us make this video! 🌟Very best regards, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
.... hey Chris, great episode ... your comment, paragraph you put in about Jack lines, am not a sailor, but when seeing Jack-lines in videos always gives me the idea of a false sense of security the way they are positioned, yes as you say could still end up in the water, and as you inferred that would be classified as a fail .... I as you said would want the Jack-lines to keep me on the boat, not ensure that I would be dragged along behind, that should only be so if all else fails .... when you were going into the sling making sure you had steerage by having water passing the rudder, was waiting for you to throw it into reverse and go for high revs, at first I thought it was the boats momentum against the strop that was raising the from of the boat, then I realized they were grabbing hold by lifting the bow .. was not expecting that at all .... great episode, thx for sharing ..... never stop dreaming, just dream bigger ..... have fun be safe, save our oceans .....
Hi Peter, I'll be reworking the jacklines to get the best setup possible. I decided to 'load test' the foward strop as I went into the boat lift. 😂 I'd be happy to do it again solo though, it was easier than I thought it was going to be. Cheers, Chris 👍

Nice movie Chris. Only one comment. You should never leave ropes in the water. You should make sure to get all lines aboard before setting off. Just relax, you have time enough to make sure.
Hi Chris, Great video. For the haul out, how did you check that the rear strop was clear of the saildrive ? Do you have marking on the toe rail ? When the boat came out, it looked very precise. Rgds Andrew

Good job, although to be honest I’d have asked one of the boatyard crew to give me a hand. Certainly where my boat is, not far up from the coast from you, I always ask when I’m on my tod for a hand when boatyard manoeuvring - they’re always pleased to help.
Hi Iain! I'm a busy man and it takes over 30 hours of work to produce a video like this. The trip might have taken me a week, but the laws of physics dictate that the videos will be online over a protracted period, especially as on some days during this trip I filmed more than one video (e.g. one of the legs + the passage planning video, and there are others in the pipeline). We're not the only ones like this, our friends from SV Delos were 18 months behind on their videos at one point.... Cheers, Chris 👍
Hi Chris, I’m binging you’re channel but am a bit confused about when you changed boats? I can’t seem to find any info about your new boat? Is there a video covering the change. I’m in the market for something similar that I can single hand for cruising and blue water sailing. Thanks in advance... Fraser
Hi Fraser, oh my goodness this is a complicated one. We bought Britaly while we still had our old boat, cruised our old boat until right before Emma was born, then had two boats in two countries for a while (both in different regions from where we live in the UK & Italy). After Emma was born we sold the old boat and started refitting Britaly, but as we had a baby, and were working like mad on the refit, whilst recording & editing these new videos (each video takes about 30 hours of work to edit & publish), we still have a backlog of videos to edit from the old boat. We have a complicated life! Britaly is a 1992 Bavaria 350. We got her at 38.5% less than the asking price, even though the asking price was already low compared to her sister ships before we started negotiating. (We used to be boat dealers and have lots of experience in getting great deals on used boats). When you think you've found the one, get in touch if you want us to help you get the best price possible: sailingbritaly.com/videocalls Cheers, Chris
this crossing was a good series, its good to be humble and appreciate what you don't know, as you were coming into those slings i could see the cogs in your head saying, I need to go in fast so I don't keep the staff waiting. My experience is to fuck everyone, its your boat, its your time table. I was yelling through the screen for you to slow down, a boat length out and you were coming in way too hot, then somehow you just forgot all about backing off and nearly took out the sling! As a solo sailor I know there is a lot going on in your head and its important to prioritize the situation. I could see you were more concerned about touching the sides and not enough by your approach speed or stopping in the strop. Use this as a learning experience which I know you will. The biggest challenge with solo sailing is getting your own head sorted out. Also one thing you could have done when you did the practice approach is the speed and angle, plan to be lined up centered AFTER you have given some reverse thrust and the prop walk kicks in. Its no good going in centered, apply reverse thrust and being all skewed. Anyway live and learn, as I said its a good series.
Whats the name of your other RUclips channel which is more technical please?? You mention it in the email you sent but don't link to it anywhere (that I can see)
The thing about swimming is where you swim to. The boat is doing 4 knots or more, you're not catching that. Swim half the width of the English Channel is hard with no prep, half the Atlantic?
Sorry, I meant "the other thing about swimming". Even if you wouldn't die sooner from swimming, it's unlikely you can reach anywhere useful. I've lived on a Pacific atoll where the water was nice and warm so you could swim until you were exhausted (and people do). But people still don't swim much in the open ocean, definitely not for transport.
It would only take seconds to bring in that stern line. Leaving lines in the water will one day bite your bum at the very worst moment. (Only trying to be helpful) Good boat handling into the lift though.
