I feel like the whole ball thing is just a literary device used to show the readers and audience that Okarun has to “grow a pair” in order to be with Momo or at least have the confidence to ask her out
in the past year we had freiren so it's hard to say this is the best anime in too long, but for the kind of show it is? it's /very/ good, and the best in recent memory bar none. it's obvious why people who haven't seen stuff like flcl or bakemonogatari but would /love/ them would say it's the best anime they've ever seen. the only similar anime they have to compare it to recently are demonslayer (which is utter trash, but they would still put it on their top 10 simply because they haven't seen enough) and jujutsu kaisen (which is fine. solid 6.5/10, aka no where near the same level as dan da dan) anyway. embrace the cringe.
Dandadan was the best show of the season with mass appeal, and the anime community has a weird recency bias bellcurve to it; anything that came out in the past year is best of all time, and thing that came out in early 2000's is also the only other thing in contention for being the best of all time and anything inbetween is pretty mid. That being said, I could actually see myself being able to recommend dandadan to someone in like 5 years and have it still be a banger. I'm sure people can cherrypick individual shows they'd personally rank higher than dandadan for 2024, but the only other shows I'd personally have in the conversation would be like, delicious in dungeon, freiren or mushoku tensei/jobless reincarnation which all have a slower pace that doesn't draw a crowd normally.

I thought Dark Gathering was a much better show than Dandadan. Don't get me wrong I liked Dandadan as well.
