Finlandia, Op. 26, is a tone poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was written in 1899 and revised in 1900. The piece was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, and was the last of seven pieces performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history. The premiere was on 2 July 1900 in Helsinki with the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus.

One of the first orchestral pieces that really touched me.
Every Finn should be proud to have Sibelius’ music, he composed a beautiful hymn for his country 🇫🇮
i used to be quite skeptical of sibelius (for no particular reason) and when i listened to this maybe two years ago as i think the first sibelius piece i heard i thought something along the lines of "huh this is quite nice actually" but i didn't really come around on his work. as a since then certainly developed music nerd currently in his first sibelius phase listening to this for the first time in ages, i have to say it is absolutely awesome.
He has a very nice violin concertos also
I can relate in the sense that I never liked this piece (even though I loved the symphonies) before, but now that I’m going througj a major sibelius fase I came to appreciate finlandia. Also it works nicer in the context of the full press celebration music, which includes many other nice pieces!
i still remember playing this in a summer camp (as a cellist), and 6:23 is so amazing-- during our rehearsals, i was the only cellist there. it's such a beautiful part of this piece.
I agree, this is the first time I have listened to this and it made me tear up, it's damn beautiful. Edit: the end had me in tears.
I love listening to this but playing... being a 2nd violin, it's too tiring, too much tremulo. Still the feeling in the orchestra, so majestic.
@@TheSupahBishdw violas have that pain too. I played tremolo and my arm got so tired 😂. As soon as the tempo got fast I instantly had the time of my life
And I’m playing it in November 2024 with an orchestra in the uk. What a treat! I am just too excited about that.
What a beautiful piece this is. I play in an amateur orchestra and we are about to play this piece come Christmas. My violin skills are rubbish, but it's a great honour to be able to play this piece.
I''d play with this with my high school state symphony. With works like this, it keeps you meshed with classical music for a lifetime.
man this is great...i love the intro and the finlandia hymn omg
An absolute masterpiece!
Excerpt 5 - 4:45
Very patriotic performance. Great having score to go along with. 👍
Exquisite!
The finlandia hymn might be what you are looking for if you played this or are playing this in orch or band. It’s what I play in 8th grade
