  • Looking for how to get started on RUclips? I got started on RUclips 10 years ago and I've learned a lot about making videos. Here are some of the lessons I’ve learned about RUclips, creativity and how to learn to love being a small RUclipsr.
    We'll cover what gear you need to get started, how to start your channel and how to combat some of the bigger emotional challenges from being a RUclipsr. I'm talking about being comfortable with yourself as a creator, enjoying your hobby and emancipating yourself from the pressures of a creative pastime.
    RUclips is a great hobby and keeping a healthy mindset is the biggest lesson I've learned. Before you think about monestising your passion or turning your hobby into a job, here's some learnings I've picked up in just how to get through the day to day stuff.
    Also, here's some good free stuff:

    “Fuck originality, fuck perfection, fuck motivation. Make what you want, when you want.”
    Pretty much the best lesson to learn about doing RUclips. Striving for some goal that is largely out of your control is a surefire way to lose passion and interest. Also, the weird hurdles we put up to stop us from making videos is so destructive. Early on, I wouldn’t make vids on topics if I felt like they were too close to something someone else in the space made as they already made it and there didn’t need to be a second one like it, and that was so stupid. As you said, your voice always has value and also, like, someone else making a video that gets a thousand or a hundred thousand or even a million views still isn’t gonna be seen by every one on the site. There are folks who will learn about stuff for the first time from your video even if Mark Brown did it first (my curse).
    Anyway, great piece and congrats on 10 years.

      Thanks for your high-effort comment, that's incredibly kind. And great insight, too. I've had close friends who are also creators tell me that they have abandoned videos partway through production, because they found out something similar already exists. That pains me, to think of them walking away from their effort in that way.
      I feel like there's a rule of the internet here. If a good game exists, there's a GMTK video about it.

    Our first microphone was a PS2 SingStar mic. The mic I use now is a second hand Samson C01U mic I bought off eBay over ten years ago. If it's not broke, dont' fix it.
    I will say if you are ultra ultra limited on a budget, focus on audio over video, you can capture gameplay filming a TV with a camcorder with the worst resolution ever, but if the audio is bad, that's what will put people off.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  2 года назад +1

      Haha, I'm really happy to hear more stories about the Secret History of the SingStar mic!
      I completely agree about audio. This video originally had a lot more "technical" tips and one of my biggest pieces of advice was that good audio makes up 80%+ of the perceived quality of your video. Glad to hear we agree on something else 😀

    Been meaning to watch this video since it came out. 100% agree with all the points in the video. Now I’ve finally returned to making videos I’m just posting them the evening I finish. None of this scheduling nonsense I felt I had to do before.
    I returned to making videos this year with nothing but my phone and a horrible laptop, and that was all the equipment I needed. The phone could do audio capture and video. The laptop for all its faults could manage 1080p WMVs for Editing. In some ways those limitations are their own innovation.
    I can remember those days editing in movie maker and using the £2 Singstar Microphone, I watched a video by kliksphilip on how to make the audio sound better and still use that advice today. RUclips is a far better place when you go into it just for enjoyment and the communities that know that certainly are the best ones.
    Top video mate 👍

    This absolutely spoke to me on a deep level my dude. It's probably the most affirming and comforting piece of "advice" I've ever seen about being creative on the internet and frankly definitely something I needed to hear. I know ultimately that I just want to make videos about things that I like but it is so, SO easy to feel yourself drawn into the rat race of analytics and number chasing. Really all that matters is enjoying it and being free from self made pressures, to chase something that you don't even particularly want, is the ultimate rule to remember. "Make what you want, when you want" should be the mantra of RUclips but obviously we've ended up some way away from that, I'm going to try and keep to that whole heartedly.
    I'm going to save this video and revisit it when I need to remember that as a bit of a prompt. Apologies if this was a little gushy, it just spoke to me. Thanks for making it!

I coulda cried when you started talking about creator anxiety. I think you know how much I struggle with that and your whole creative philosophy is SO inspiring to me. I'm very thankful to have met you through RUclips and I know I'll be returning to this vid whenever I need a boost.

    This was a fantastic video and something I definitely needed to hear as someone with their own small channel. It can be tough to feel valued on this platform sometimes, which can take away from the fun and enjoyment of it all. Your words and attitudes in this video are the perfect medicine for that self-doubt and, as you put it, toxicity. Thanks for making this!

  • @PrimeHylian

    This video hits so many pain points and deep assumptions right on the head, it's astounding. After creating videos for over 6 years now, I still lived with many of these.
    I've always struggled with the idea that you need to be deeply original with what bring to the table, and had anxiety about making videos on topics already covered, or having a thumbnail or edit that's just a bit *too* similar to someone else's. I think there's great value in being creative, but it's also been a massive burden to me. I never thought that my voice on it's own actually has value, regardless of how original the point or presentation may be. That alone is a huge revelation.
    Also, wow, "Finished is better than perfect" has been life advice for me with RUclips, and seeing it here fills me with such confidence and relief. At the end of the day, just producing and *finishing* is the most valuable thing to help improve your craft. You'll never reach that 'perfect video' and at some point it's more important to click render, upload, and move on.
    Fantastic video, I'll be saving this one to rewatch down the line.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  2 года назад +1

      Firstly, thank you for being so honest and vulnerable here. Others will absolutely benefit from that so thank you.
      I really want to tell you that you don’t need to be original. There is a huge value in being creative, and copying is an essential part of the learning process. Hobbling yourself with the burden of being original will only harm you as a creator. Kubrick stole his camera work from Hitchcock. Metallica stole riffs from older bands. If they didn't, we'd never have got The Shining and Master of Puppets!
      Lastly, "finishing is the most valuable thing to help improve your craft" is so beautifully succinct I wish I'd written it into this video.

  • @sidremus
    @sidremus 2 года назад +1

    Man, this stuff really resonates with me!
    I'm a gamedev most of the time, and with equally little "viral" success. It's really easy to be blinded by all the stuff that the people who "made it" are making and think that if you can't be that original AND that successful, it's not worth bothering at all.
    You're right, though. If you only ever try to create stuff for the ever elusive algorithm you only lose track of what you actually liked in the first place. So, I'll try to incorporate your advice some more!

    That was great and a great insight into your journey.
    I think all of us fall into that trap of trying to make everything perfect. Or going back and think they should have done this and that.
    It took years to get out of that mindset and now i make content for me rather than this supposed billion subscribers that is never going to happen.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  2 года назад +1

      Thanks mate, glad you liked it. Every creative person I know has some form of imposter syndrome or creative anxiety. Whether it's about perfection, upskilling, needing permission, comparison or motivation. We all struggle with one or more of these paralysing negative emotions. And I've found the key is to inspect those feelings, to realise that your brain is a big dumb bundle of meat wires and it should shut up and let you create!
      It's easier said than done, but working through those feelings has robbed them of a lot of their power. It's a journey, but hopefully this might help others get started on the same path.

    Great video! The part when you said “at the end of the day, this is for fun” really resonated with me. I sometimes need to remind myself of that 😅
    It’s so silly because I have a tiny channel, but it can be easy to transform a hobby into something you “work” on rather than have fun with - especially when you feel like you have to be “productive” all the time. Like, no, I also want to enjoy myself!

    • @MattyStoked

      You got it. One of the segments from the script which didn't make the edit was about what I was calling the workification of your hobby. Our hobbies are supposed to be among the things we like the most in the world. If we're not careful, we can end up transforming them into the one thing which everybody universally likes the least. Work. That's a tough line to walk!

    I assume you anticipated a bunch of smaller youtubers to show up in the comments. I was just checking out your channel after looking for takes on the N64 Castlevania games since I just finished my first Castlevania (the first one for FDS). And then when checking out the content I saw this. So I hope you don't mind if I share a little bit of my experience as well.
    5:15 - Just start. This is good advice. When I first started my channel it was a Yu-Gi-Oh channel. I just started. I didn't even really think about it. And it kind of grew naturally. But then I stopped. And I kept planning to return... but I didn't. And then, somehow, 9 years passed by. This time though, having a more specific vision, that's what caused the nerves. Wanting it to be perfect. I sat on my first *new* video for over a year. Then finally posted it to ~20 views. It can be really tough starting out. For me it's honestly still tough. But I agree. I didn't start improving in my editing until after I started -- and then I started to get a better more practical idea of what I wanted to do.
    8:00 - This also hits hard about having a full-time job. I am very busy, and it's hard to make time. And I enjoy doing it but I find there is simply not enough time in the day. I also wanted to do one a week. But It became apparent rather fast that there was no way I could keep up with that while maintaining quality that I was okay with. For me it's less about making RUclips my job, and more about having something that I'm doing on my own that I can watch (hopefully) grow and entertain over time.
    Great video! Since I like it when people tell me: I subbed.

      Thanks for that comment, that was very cool of you. I'm interested to know how you found the video. I'm glad my points landed with you I'm very much about culturing a positive attitude to work, home, hobby life. Harmony sometimes means saying no. I used to try and do one video a week and it was terrible. Having boundaries is a good thing :-)
      Also, I subbed to you. Love your aesthetic.

      @@MattyStoked I found you by searching for information on the N64 Castlevania games! I was curious about them since I have a modded N64 and was thinking about busting the first one out.

      @@HPRshredder Well worth a shot! Also, that's radical that I'm getting good search traction.
