I’m going into my junior year at CHS and I’ve lived in Chesterton basically my whole life, I agree with this, other than I think the trains are apart of Chesterton culture, other than that, pretty accurate👌

I live in Berlin for the last 14 years. We've our share of good street markets - I should know, I'm actually a contemporary and historic guide, part time. Still, when I come home for a visit and bring german friends/partners, Chesterton's market is always one of the top things on my list. The vendors represent the best of the region.

Grew up there, moved to Las Vegas when I was 17. It was a culture shock getting out of that area which was a good thing. With getting older I can’t lie that I don’t miss it now, miss the more smaller town life. Bigger cities are getting worse and worse.

This video was almost a year ago but i just now found it. Ive lived with my grandma in Chesterton since i was a baby, and I’m now at CMS (Chesterton Middle School) its such a lovely town and has so much to do. Every schools bullying policy is ridiculous, and they dont care if someone gets bullied. Other than that its a great place to live and i definitely enjoyed this video!

@@ajeanieinbloxburg7922 I would highly recommend taking advantage of CMSs brand new bullying policies which allow for anonymous reporting/tips. Whoever's responsible, their behaviour will only get worse with age if there isnt an intervention.
It's unfortunate that telling a responsible faculty member or caregiver can often lead to more trouble if the abuser(s) find out or the adult isn't competent to deal with bullying. The thing to watch out for is being the frog in boiling water, never realising when it gets too hot, because you get used to the slowly increasing heat. What you think of as 'not that bad' could already be pretty awful.
You are not alone, faculty blindness is a real problem across the US. The current school board may not be 100% perfect, but I promise you they care. Especially Mr. Petit.
Ultimately, you'll have to make your own decision as to what is least stressful for you and it shouldn't work that way.
There are better school systems with better training. Chesterton is pretty average unfortunately even if it's attempted to be better recently.

I think the cons are very minimal. I enjoy it being a small town without big box stores, we have much less traffic and congestion. Michigan City, Valpo, Portage are all relatively the same distance if you need those stores. We also have awesome parks for kids, and a rad splash pad next to Friendship Park. There is a great trail in town at Porter & 23rd. I do hope they put an Aldi in where the old Kmart was 🤞

Pros = everything, Cons = nothing. Lived in Chesterton since 1996. Good restaurants (Octave grille, Lucrezia, Third coast), close to Valpo, Michigan city, Close to both Toll Road and I94. Indiana national lake shore. Very little crime, great schools. Close the South Shore station and Ivy Tech and Valpo University.
Cons = KFC recently closed (really that is the worst thing i can think of) and the recent closing of the Brassie Golf Club (still leaves Sand Creek (if you have the $$$$))
    Update: New Aldi's being built.

The #1 pro is having the beauty of the Indiana Dunes parks in your background, especially in non-crowded summer months. The #2 pro is interestedly the #1 con. That being it remains a small town. I have No problem driving to heavy out of town commercial areas to keep this area more safe with less traffic; people not as pretentious as for example as in Crown Point or Valpo, both making life less competitive and less stressful. (Amazing the high percent of people recently driving 2 hours to support the high school basketball team at state.) Being a small town, there remains however a bias toward those who grew up here. We have lived here nearly 20 years now and somehow still seem like outsiders. I thought maybe it was just us, but asked people in similar situations and they repeatedly agree. There is always favoritism because this person in a position of power went to grade/high school together with another. Perhaps that is only a natural consequence and not intentional, however, it certainly is felt by those who did not grow up here. Maybe recent transplants is understandable, but feeling that way 20 years later is evident Chesterton remains a small town. Besides that it is one of the best places to live without a doubt. Pros greatly outweigh cons.

The #1 cons that were missed - lots of violence against LGBTIQ+ people and casual racism goes unchecked. I personally dont know of any friends who are LGBTIQ and have decided to stay in chesterton. There are some local supportive culture, businesses, and persons. Red cup and Octave come to mind.
The pros are all accurate, for sure. I especially liked how big box stores being absent aren't really a con, excellent observation. The chamber of commerce has done great work with the market. Also, you won't be able to sleep without the trains if you sleep in Chesterton long enough!

    • @LivinginNorthwestIndiana

personally, I never witnessed any violence against the LGBTQ+ community, I think Chesterton and a great deal of Northwest Indiana has come a long way in recent years. I am here to serve

@@LivinginNorthwestIndiana I agree that things have come a long way and I'm glad you've never personally experienced LGBTIQ+ violence in Chesterton. Mostly, it manifests at the school-age level and people leave when they get old enough to get away from the adults that such abusive children grow into.
Apropos, the new bullying policy of the Duneland School Corp. could do a lot to fix this situation especially if they adopt restorative justice (not punishing the bully, but correcting their behaviour).
I love Chesterton. Unfortunately, it is still a place in Indiana, where children can be and are sometimes sent by their parents to conversion "therapy" camps against their will. Outlawed in most of the rest of the world.
I encourage anybody reading this who would like Chesterton to be a friendlier place to LGBTIQ+ people, to think about what they personally can do to fix this particular con.
