Plein Air Watercolor Study Session ✶ The journey to improve values & color

  • Today I'm taking you outside for a plein air study session. I'll share my current process for how I improve my understanding of values and colors in the landscape, particularly with mixing green. The landscape in Scotland during May is an ocean of vivid color, which can be beautiful but overwhelming. I go outside to study as often as I can, because I've learned that photos don't tell the whole truth. I encourage you to give it a try, no matter where you live or what time of year it is!

You really clarified the "values" for me in this study. I plan to use this in my next painting. Thanks Sarah.

Wow! A jackpot Saturday with TWO videos posted! Greens are so challenging. Here in FLORIDA everything is turning into a jungle because we have had 3” of rain this past week. I have been studying all the different colors or green mostly because my former pastures have become forests and I am surrounded by the abundance of fast growing plants and trees. The tiny new grape leaves have magenta edges and bright almost chartreuse along the veins of the leaves. Avocados, Mayer lemon, live oak, wild cherry, Canadian thistle all different greens and values. Overwhelmed! Thank you for your lovely process video. ❤️☮️🙏🏻

This instruction is so valuable! I'm really working on exactly this, simplifying, connecting the big shapes and doing value studies. Then toning colors to approximate the values has been a huge challenge for me, but somehow I have never used a grayscale value finder tool. Now I get it! As you say, I think THIS is what I have been needing to help train my eye. Thank you so much!

Thank you for sharing how you approach this scene with watercolor. I mainly work with watercolor so this was a real treat to see you work with this medium again. I don't work with gouache and it's not the reason that I follow your channel (you are excellent with that medium and I recommend your channel to my friends who are interested in gouache). I follow your channel because I very much enjoy watching you be creative no matter what medium you use. I'm a nature girl and it's a big attraction for me with your channel. You inspire me to get outside and do art every time I watch your videos. So thank you for that!

Hello. I am a new subscriber to your channel. I enjoyed this video and your explanations very much and love the views of Scotland there too! I enjoy learning more about value and color, and definitely did learn in this video from your point of view. Thank you so much. I am newer to watercolor and painting in general over these last couple of years. So I am really enjoying finding new artists to follow. Paula

Your green field today could have been somewhere in New Zealand. Especially the aerial view at the end it could have been shot here in the Waikato where I live. Any buildings would show it wasn't though. Our stone buildings are very few and far between. We've still got a bit of autumn color here right now. My favorite season

I found I’ve gotten a lot more confident with my green mixing since doing months 2 & 3 gouache lessons from your Craftamo subscription. Now that things are starting to turn green here, I think it’s really going to help me stop relying on my convenience greens so much 😅. I need more practice pushing things “back” into the distance by choosing the right values/colours; it always looks so effortless when you do it. I can do it when I’m following a lesson and hearing suggestions, but doing it on my own is trickier.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio

That takes a lot of practice - putting what you know to use when you are on your own. So many artists go through it!

Sarah hi newbie here wow the the scenery looks so much like it does here in south Ireland rural and beautiful and emerald greens and purple and white heathers and also the blossom of the mayflower trees blackthorn. My favourite time of year is now. Question do you make or mix your colours and add them premixed for your palette loving your channel. I havent left a comment before but gone through your older videos and thumbs up high tfs sylvi

She pre-mixes her yellow, but I think the rest are convenience mixes and some are single pigment. Her blog/website has a page titled " My favorite art supplies" that lists the colors in this palette. Some of them are really unusual, but perfect for landscape painting. Hope this helps.
