I’m an airline captain on the B777 and a lifelong model railroader/rail fan. Your videos are excellent and allow me to enjoy rail fanning - thanks for the videos.
Lots of people make train videos, but your very informative and knowledgeable narratives (combined with excellent videography) lift yours to the very top! Thank you!
It's only coincidental that I watched this video and I have to say the narration made it interesting. I didn't know railway traffic was just as complicated, if not more than automotive traffic. I live in South Tampa near MacDill AFB and the train running to/from Port Tampa is literally a handful of cars at a time on the weekdays.
Lots of fast mechanical bells on the S line that day! Wow, you never hear fast bells on modern engines anymore. Great catches! And as for the ripped out drawbar... well, that's a fender bender. Happens all the time on this line, as I understand due to long consists and lots of consistently changing terrain. Usually just the knuckle though... oof, not this time!
Another informative and professional quality railfanning video! . Love the drone video perspective, it significantly raises ones enjoyment level. Thank you Danny!
Great video sir!! Nice to see the drone back in the air. ;) I'm sure some of the crews were getting short on their hours of service by the time things started running again. Anything can go wrong on the railroad. One night last fall I helped Q294 fix a ruptured air hose. Used my gator to go back and forth to the loco. Conductor said you saved us an hour and a half easy. I'll do anything to help these guys out.
Great video Danny. The two engines on the side at the crash site that you saw at the Citra crash site were a GP40-2 and an AC6000CW, according to the CSX locomotives facebook page. According to their information, the former will be sent to Huntington WV for rebuilding into a GP40-3, no information on the latter AC6000 though.
This is one heck of a catch Danny! What are the chances that an entire coupler would break at a point where the railroad would have to leave cars on a main switch tying up the main line? Close to zero - probably a once in a lifetime shot. Also, you have a good example of how different GE units and EMD units sound at 8:36
Yeah, losing an entire drawbar is rare. And as the vid shows, it can cause big trouble. Changing a knuckle is possible with just one person. Changing a drawbar calls for car dept forces with heavy equipment.
Danny, awesome catches and narrations. Quite an interesting morning for catches most trains run in the evening, except Q-652, and/maybe K-780. Thanks to that crash at Citra it was a interesting and fast morning, thankfully everyone was ok. Did you find out how long it took to repair the car and get Q-453 moving? Luke
That was quite the catch there Danny! Nice footage and information. Say, do you have an idea what days and times would be best for catching some CSX intermodal or Florida Midland trains at the Winter Haven depot? How does one go about finding this out? Thanks. Cheers, Dan
I live just up the street from Vitas Junction. That night there was train after train after train, all night long and into the day. I told my wife something must have happened. Now I know. Thanks for posting.
@ Distant Signal. Is it my imagination, or does the bell for Q-178 (at 2:37 in the video) sound like it's ringing 'double-time'? I've never heard a train bell ring that fast. If it is ringing 'double-time' fast, could you tell me why, vs a 'normal' speed of ringing? Thanks. And love your channel . I subscribed yesterday. :-)
Interesting how many GEs in this video have very fast bells. I'm beginning to wonder if that's done on purpose, as 3 different units with the same issue in a row is odd?
Always a gem Sir...and I could only speculate more or less correctly on the Citra wreck as it was because of your videos we've been watching (as rail fans) for the last recent years with the CSX movements on the S line. I had thought after a Google search on the details of where the Critra mishap occurred that a train hadn't made it through and onto the siding when the approaching one had nothing it could do to stop from hitting it. And it's too bad you couldn't have seen the area of the wreck but it was in some lush area and that looked somewhat remote to get to without a security force in place to keep inquiring minds at bay. Great stuff and glad to see the new DJI unit up and running well for the shots in the last parts... Thanks and always are looking for anything coming out of he DA studios....
Not convinced they could legally stop him taking photos, TBH. If he was in a public place, he has every right to take photos. However, that's not a hill worth dying on: if the cops don't want you to take photos, and it's "just" a train derailment, it's best to not take photos.
I really enjoy your videos as I live in Ridge Manor on the corner of 301 and 50. I can't see the s-line from home but I hear all the rail traffic. I sometimes head up to Catherine or down to Owensboro to catch some rail action. Do you know if the Ringling circus train will be heading down the s-line on it's way back to Tampa on Jan. 23?
Plant City’s station Still has a rail line right next to the station, it’s still connected to one of the double tracks (if I remember from earlier videos) but it’s overgrown; is it even used anymore, and does it hook back up to a main line at any point or is it a dead end (rails pulled up or blocked somehow)?
I think the trackage is still there and goes down to the bone valley phosphate region but I've never seen a phosphate train coming or going from that direction. All the phosphate traffic goes via Winston and then A line to lakeland. Depending on the dispatcher and what is happening on the vitis sub, I have seen one phosphate train go south to plant city and turn the wye to the s line
The same thing happened on the CSXT Q400 at Petersburg on the A line a few months back.. to much train for one Knuckle to handle. It blocked the Number one main for hours. lo nice video
Was this just an isolated incident or do you think CSX might be running some of these trains too long without a DPU? How is it decided when a train needs a DPU? length or weight or both? surely it wouldn't hurt to explore that possibility.
3:44 why is there a chain connected to the brake caliper and running the length of the bogey? Do the train engineers pull on the chain sort of like an emergency break to lock the train brakes?
greatt job as always n as they say sometimes its better to be lucky than good!! how can the police stop you from video the crash scene? time for the drone
Tyler Scott well if it's CSX property the Deputy is obligated to keep people away. it can be videoed/photographed from a public road or right of way though.
Trains with JB Hunt containers around here in BNSF territory are most often referred to as Z trains in my area we get two a day the Z-PTLCHC and the Z-CHCPTL
hunter dawso see I don't get this. if there gonna put a patch with a logo on the engine, they might as well paint the entire engine, like a heritage unit. but it's CSX so you know
@@patrickmaloney1810 Was he going to be filming from public land? If he was entering private property, the land-owner doesn't have to let you take photos.
I could listen to this man talk about railroading all day !
Get him on PBS!
I agree me too
He is TOO GOOD for PBS!!!!
Thank the Lord for youtube !
Don't let him fool you, he's no amateur LOL
Hes a producer and does voice overs for a tv station i believe
When I’ve had a bad day your super calm voice and absolute love of the trains and rails is the most soothing thing ever.
Wow!! That's a nice compliment, Chris. Thanks!

I love how this was all put together! And it's definitely a surprise with the knuckle just coming off! Never seen anything like it!
There was two heritage units on Q-453.
I watch "many" YT train vids, but I always come back to yours. Great commentary Danny. Keep up the great work/footage. Cheerz from Canada.
Thank you so much! I'm glad I can offer you Canadians something interesting! :-))
The first train had CSX 7889 the Atlantic Coast Line heritage unit
Great day for Danny. Bad day for the railroad. Nice work as always my friend.
Lol ACL symbol and a Colonel Phillip Hopper unit right behind it lol!! C'mon Danny!! Great video!!
Wow nice consist on that Q453! The ACL "Heritage" and the Col. Philip Hooper SD40-2!
Yeah, that was a crazy lashup.

great video danny, very neat to see the coupler broken that way and the problem it caused. thanks.
Wow. Also 1:18 CSX 7889, I think is the SCL, but it has an emblem on the side.
Interesting footage.
Trains N' Stuff & West Coast Railfan Productions I actually caught 7889 forever ago and I think its the ACL, but I might be wrong...
Cool!

Hi Danny, thank you for a great job as usual. Keep up the great work I’m enjoying your videos very much up here in North Carolina.
That was a fine video Danny, I enjoyed every second of it!

Q453 had the 7889 with the ACL emblem, AND the Col. Philip Hooper unit :D AMAZING consist!
This belongs in your Greatest Hits. Outstanding catches.
1:17 I notice 2 heritage units! Great catch Danny!!!!!
Hello Distant Signal, Thank you for another great video. I really enjoy the details you provide.
Great catches Danny, The drone footage is KILLER !

Don't locomotives have option controlls that determines the speed of the bells

Many thanks, Todd. Yes, I think next time I'll use the drone to fly in "black" to the site.
Awesome channel.. been watching you for a while.. just gets better and better keep up the good work sir.
Another great video. I am curious since they did not want photos, could they have prevented you from flying your drone over the site?

Well that was certainly an exciting video. Lots of trains. Thanks Danny. 👍👍👍❤️

The lead engine on Q453 is an ex-Conrail C40-8W!
Railfan Andrew same with Q652.
The same thing happened on the CSXT Q400 at Petersburg on the A line a few months back.. to much train for one Knuckle to handle. It blocked the Number one main for hours. lo nice video
Great video. How do they pick those engines up?
Nice catches with the ACl emblem and Colonel Hopper on the same train!
Dear Danny have u ever caught a empty double stacked train?
I could watch these videos all day
Thanks! Always something new to learn from you.
How long did it take for 652 to pass at Lacoochee? Also, check out NE Lacoochee next time you go railfanning on the S line.
I'm not sure but I think it was 4 minutes.
Was this just an isolated incident or do you think CSX might be running some of these trains too long without a DPU? How is it decided when a train needs a DPU? length or weight or both? surely it wouldn't hurt to explore that possibility.
Brian Ruhlen CSX Railfan it's determined by weight.
i live about 5 miles from citra. that crash was pretty crazy.
nice catch with CSX 7889 & 8077 right next to each other!
Great video! What a catch with the broken draw bar too
Hey Danny you missed a CSX "heritage" unit! At 1:13!
3:44 why is there a chain connected to the brake caliper and running the length of the bogey? Do the train engineers pull on the chain sort of like an emergency break to lock the train brakes?
I always look forward to your videos........... the best ever !
Danny, what editing software do you use?
Final Cut Pro X
Great, thanks for the great info.
Luke
TV or Radio. You got the voice for news reader.
you caught the ALS emblem and 8077 nose to nose at 1:17!!!!
So how long do you think it will be before the S-Line is back in full swing?
They had the line clear and in service in just under 48 hours.
Distant Signal Excellent, did you happen to catch the other trains that were held up?
Why Does CSX 4748 Look Different. I Did Some Searching & Apparently That's A SD70MAC But It Doesn't Look Like One
Danny, I have not heard much about our passenger train. You can be assured that if there is is any news I will try to send it to you.
greatt job as always n as they say sometimes its better to be lucky than good!! how can the police stop you from video the crash scene? time for the drone
Fantastic video as always sir. thank you!!!!
Much appreciated.
How often do you see yellow nose 2 nowadays? Never caught yellow nose 2. But I have ONE CSX based video with O717 at Deerfield.
+Florida Railfanning 812 Up in Pennsylvania, YN2 is EVERYWHERE! I almost don't record the YN2 Units!
awesome video. learning something new everyday. very cool. sweet an old school car nice.
Was that the same Q453 with the acl locomotive that crashed?
Nice catch Danny! Sucks that the cop wouldn't let you video the derailment site from a safe distance, but that's the breaks. Keep up the awesome work!
Tyler Scott well if it's CSX property the Deputy is obligated to keep people away. it can be videoed/photographed from a public road or right of way though.
ya that's why I said "safe distance" but I agree
I would have launched the drone!
@@erniebennett4650 Only legal to use the drone within line of sight.
Thanks! I like the drone shots.
After watching the Stobe the Hobo videos it makes me wonder how many people are on those trains going by you.
When was the Sparr Defect Detector put out?
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954.still get a tear in my eye when I hear an old train in the night.
Nice. Seems like you have a drone in a few shots.
Yep, I broke out the DJI Drone at Dade City.
Would of been nice to put it over the derail and see what was going on. But after your called out I think it would be a bad idea.
The ex. Conrail leader on the first train was much more interesting than any of CSX’s half-assed Heritage Units
Trains with JB Hunt containers around here in BNSF territory are most often referred to as Z trains in my area we get two a day the Z-PTLCHC and the Z-CHCPTL
Great video.. Love the details.
the train i caught just so happened to break a coupler as i was recording.
1:00 pretty horn. 1:17 Any idea what that sticker is on the short hood of 7889?
From the other comments, it seems to be an ACL logo. CSX's rather half-hearted attempt at a heritage livery.
Your Rail Fan videos are awesome Danny, not better.
None better.
Many thanks Gordon.
Danny your so lucky Q453 had a CSX 7889 the ACL Emeblem and the Colonel Phillips hopper in the same train lucky you
Good catch of CSX 7889 with the ACL logo!
hunter dawso and 8077 philip hopper
hunter dawso see I don't get this. if there gonna put a patch with a logo on the engine, they might as well paint the entire engine, like a heritage unit. but it's CSX so you know
The Santa Fe Guy yea but this is about as best as you can get with CSX besides sticker logos
Danby what was the sherriff's objection to your picture taking....or did he give a reason.
Thomas Howard Yes, on what authority did he suspend the First Amendment?
@@patrickmaloney1810 Was he going to be filming from public land? If he was entering private property, the land-owner doesn't have to let you take photos.
Nice catch on the ACL emblem unit
Nice video Danny! if you want busy CSX action and hot intermodals you should come up to Fostoria Ohio
Midwestern Railfan2002 love the Iron Triangle.
I live in Ohio and come to Fostoria Alot!
SE Michigan Railfan Marion OH is a nice spot too. Not that far.
Been to fosty and Marion SO many times! Its awesome!
What an awesome lashup!
How is the length determined?
At 7:30, Mr. Distant Signal has a great description of the slow auto.
Drone time? Before drones?
Great video! Got the 453 @ Plant City
Loved that car.
great work Danny.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
The real interesting bit would be seeing the repair to the broken coupler
strange how most of these locomotives have a crazy fast bell
And the intro still thrives
Wonderful Video.
did you notice 2 heritage units in the first catch?
Hey Danny, do you happen to know who those hot air balloons were?
What's up with all those GE's ringing fast
WTH? Was a balloon stuck in the power lines?
