    I've been doing the shade tree wrench turning for quite a while and I like how methodical you are on your diagnosis. excellent stuff. and don't kid yourself, your catch phrase,"if I can do it you can do it" is incorrect. it takes a technical mind and thoughtful approach to troubleshoot the way you do. hence the reason you seem to get a lot of rigs other so called mechanics can't fix. not everyone can do this stuff. good work young man.

    Same oil pressure set up used by Ford and many others. Market research showed that buyers wanted the gauge and not an idiot light, so in Fords case they switched over and installed a real gauge. However, many folks had never seen how an oil pressure gauge actually works. They got worried about that gauge rising/falling and being higher when cold / lower when hot. The result was to install a resistor wire to feed the gauge on the panel and replace the actual sensor with a switch. The resistor pops the gauge right up as soon as the sensor detects oil pressure, and it stays right there nice and steady. Customers were happy, they had a "gauge" Ford wasn't real happy but they did alter the design of the dash board, they ALL had the resistor in them from the factory! How long ago did this start? Well let's just say that if you own a Ford, it likely has an "idiot gauge" in it.
    The first TSB came out in 1988 on the Ford F-Series, and it quickly spread to everything Ford made. You get a real oil pressure gauge once you get up to the super duty WITH a diesel.
    On many Fords the water temp is the same way....
    BUT before anyone of the other brand owners start bragging, They do it as well. There are some out there with real working gauges, but many are just a pretty idiot light...
    OH most switches are set from 7-11 psi ! (and are amazingly interchangeable as long as they use the same threads)

    • @leebarnes655
      @leebarnes655 8 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the info, seems like I'm the last to know of this silliness. Snap-On plays too then, how very stupid. We can keep this a secret I'm pretty sure...
      Gas gauge on 2001 F150 won't show real time data, you have to shut off the engine and then start it back up to see how full it actually is - instantly too. Two hours with engine running otherwise before it gets to full mark. They don't want us watching the gauge while fueling, how anal does it get?

    • @Blazer02LS
      @Blazer02LS 8 лет назад +1

      +Lee Barnes The scan tool can only see the data the ECM sends it. Real time oil pressure isn't a "needed" item, just that the engine has oil pressure. However ECT is a needed item so there will be at least one real temp sensor on there.

    • @JVerschueren
      @JVerschueren 7 лет назад +1

      That's so silly though... who would want an oil gauge on a non-performance, non-heavy-duty vehicle? -and, if there is one, would worry about it not reading a fixed value?
      I'm learning a lot about cars from watching this and other channels, but even before, when I just put petrol in and took it to the dealer at regular intervals, I realised things like oil and waterpumps are driven off the engine, so their functioning will change with rpm and stuff. I mean, the only thing about oil pressure that's 'pull over right now and call break down assistance' is an unexpected drop while going down the road, right?

    • @leebarnes655
      @leebarnes655 7 лет назад +4

      +Jan Verschueren, not here though. You are entitled to your opinions and preferences, but I want to watch the actual oil pressure over the entire life span of the engine in order to determine the little things like when I'm down two quarts in my suby the oil gauge goes spongy to relate it as best as words can. I know I have but a few scant miles to go before I should pull over and dump two in -- on MY schedule and not in heavy interstate traffic which is hazardous to all living things. You are forced to call AAA and I don't want any part of that. I've GOT the oil with me you see. Give me all the information so I can become the master of my own destiny in other words.

    • @kens97sto171
      @kens97sto171 7 лет назад

      Blazer02LS
      You are correct... Mazda did this in the Miata and I assume other cars. 90-94 got a real gauge that moves. 94 to 97 is an idiot gauge... although it's not just on and off. there is some small changes seen. Same with the temperature gauge. it move a little bit in the middle... for the same reason you said. people freak out when the needle moves a bunch.
      05 in the 3rd gen they went back to a moving gauge... but even it's fake. it moves a lot. but is the ecm calculation shown on the gauge... not the real pressure.
      it's actually annoyed in that gen car. it wildly swings around with RPM.
      my guess on the Jeep.. they had a ton of gauges used in other stuff. so rather than redesign the dash layout, they used what they had and made it work

    Another SMA thumbs up video! At 27:32, the likely reason the Jeep does not have a real oil pressure variable gauge is that the readings would freak out the average person. Oil pressure ranges from 10-15psi at idle to 70-90psi at 3,000 rpm. Imagine how the average person would react when they are watching that gauge, come off the highway and stop at a traffic light. All the average person needs to know is whether they have oil pressure.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 лет назад +4

      +Sandbag1300 Yeah I think a simple light would be just fine in this case..

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 6 лет назад +1

      And here I am thinking "Why not both?"
      Give me a gauge to tell what the actual oil pressure is for those who want to know, and below a certain threshold (7-8 PSI) it turns on a red light which the rest of us can pay attention to.
      The human brain is really good at dealing with more information than it needs to make a decision quickly. In this case "So long as the light's not on, don't worry about it".
      Oil pressure is a really good way to tell when it's time to get a new engine (or rebuild the one you have, but nobody does that these days unless it's from an older muscle car).
      EDIT: These days you wouldn't even need a physical oil pressure gauge, just put the info in the same display that's showing you the fuel economy, time, outside temperature, and stuff like that.
      Heck with one more sensor you could have it measure the pressure drop across the oil filter to tell you when to replace the filter instead of just replacing the filter every time you change the oil. Maybe keep that bit for the high-end package with all the bells and whistles.

      @@SouthMainAuto All the WJs up until 2002 or 2003 had a real sensor that would read pressure and when they switched to a dummy switch they didn't want to reconfigure the cluster so people didn't think they "lost" a feature. It was done to stop complaints to the dealership of low oil pressure since it is hard to explain to the customer that it is normal when the vehicle is hot on a hot day to have a lower pressure at idle. LOL

As for finding a compatible connector for the oxygen sensor from another vehicle, if you search for an O2 sensor at our favorite Irish auto parts store, they have a compatibility tab to see where the part is also used. In this case, they show 82 other vehicles which use the same O2 sensor. Additionally, for parts compatibility, there are Hollander manuals.

    Chrysler didn't like that people were getting upset that the vehicle "didn't" have oil pressure at idle when hot. Since less than 10 p.s.i. looked "bad" on their REAL gauge they faked the oil pressure gauge to look like you always had a WHOPPING 40 P.S.I.! Atleast that's what I read and honestly it makes sense. I had a 1999 grand Cherokee that acted the same way and I was dumbfounded till I realized it was fake news. Love your work Eric! Keep it up.

      I'm surprised he doesn't have any Superseal or Deutsch plugs in stock, those are great connectors, never had any problems with them and we have similar conditions to NY where I am. The Deutsch connectors are kinda pricey though. Superseal works just as well, but Deutsch is more industry standard, well over here in the Yurops anyway.

      The whole reason to worry about a connector or a hard wired o2 sensor is for the next time changing it. If you replace both sides with another type connector, you will not match up with the new O2 sensor down the line.

So now we've had the Chrysler Jeep, the Mercedes Jeep, and finally the Fiat Jeep and they are still crap. My daughter bought one without my knowing about it. It lasted long enough to get off warranty without giving her any grief. After warranty.....that's another story.

    I enjoyed the video! I have the dreaded P0420 on my 02 Subaru Outback H4. I'm using an Open Source Scan Tool called Romraider. It's not as nice as your scanner, but I think it will do the job if I can learn how to use it. The thing I like about your videos is your approach to troubleshooting. You break it down into its simplest parts and logically work through the problem. Personally, I appreciate that you rewired the O2 sensor they way you did. No it's not spec, but you did the best job that could be done with the resources you have. And you got that Jeep back up and running! I watch your videos because you have the experience and knowledge of automotive systems. And most importantly, you can transfer that knowledge to the masses. Even though I don't know you personally, I feel confident to work on my vehicle--even in really hard to diagnose problems. As a side note, I'm putting in my application at a Subaru dealership for an entry-level Lube Tech job. At 49 years old, I want to start a new career as an Auto-tech. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Congratulations Eric!!!...good Fix!!!....sealed...no water or moisture!!!!....solid connection!!!....o2 sensor super ready to go off-road...hard!!....about oil indicators!!!..There are many kinds!!!!...regularly what is comonly called "oil pressure switch" only drives a 12v beam on the dash (single wire switch)!!! when engine is off and key on!!..no oil pressure, beam is on (the switch provides ground from the engine block)!!...when engine runs, oil pressure is build and beam is off (because the switch is open by the oil pressure)!!! simple in the old days...but...from what I know (very humble opinion) always when there is a gauge, the oil pressure unit must be a "variable resistor unit" no matter if it has one wire or many wires. There are many oil pressure units that senses oil presure with only one wire!! In this type (one wire only) when Engine-off-key-on, the gauge works in conjuction with the resitor value of the unit on the block, and provides a minimum value of ohms, nearly ground (always pushed by a calibrated spring). When engine runs, the unit on the block reports higher value of ressitance, then this device is building a voltage between 0 (from engine block ground) to 14 volts (from the ignition key). the gauge resistor values are choosen to work with this, and reports on the dash a value from 0 to 14volts (converted linearly to psi oil pressure) and the PCM only manage the info in units of volts/psi!!!...In my wild guess, that car should use "one wire only variable resistor-oil pressure sending unit", insted of and old-school 12v beam oil pressure switch (like the one it has)!!!....sorry for the tons of words I droped on this!!!... Hello to everybody at SMA!!! :) :) :) :)

    Oil pressure PCM processed data inverted vs. real data just to make your head hurt.. It messed me up too when I was diagnosing P0523 especially when I disconnected it and checked it with my DVOM & lab scope b/c I thought I was losing my mind. If voltage is > 4.6V which yours was 5.25V it will set the code especially with that initial spike...real data for an open capacitance style switch . You are absolutely right when you say to just install a sensor after a quick visual b/c it is cheaper than troubleshooting & it's always fixed the problem for me. I did laugh when I seen how the B1S2 wiring was routed & clamped. You'll probably have a customer for life for getting him back on the road vs. waiting for a connector. You definitely went above and beyond when you went to the salvage yard searching for it yourself. I did learn something new about the heated O2 drive cycle readiness monitor so thanks which is why I like watching videos...always trying to increase my knowledge. As usual great video & nice intro!

    As the owner of two pristine '04 Grand Cherokees, I'd love to figure out how to make the "idiot gauge' function so that it reads actual oil pressure. A video on how to do this would be MOST welcome!

    All Grand Cherokees 93-03 use actual pressure data and displays real time pressure. They switched the sensor unit in the Jeep in your video in 04, which is what year that Jeep is according to the grille and fog lights.

    Eric on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee which has the 4.7 I think my Grand Cherokee Jeep uses a different style of oil pressure switch because on my Jeep you can see it go from high to low , as far as the wrecking yard I like your Wrecking Yard a lot better than the ones we have out here in California we have to go to wrecking yards that have all the cars are on 4 stands and on your wrecking yards there just a lot alot better , keep up the great work .

    That explains why my cherokee has 2 pins in the oil pressure sensor but the one in the grand cherokee motor I'm swapping in it only has one. I thought the pin got pulled out. Guess I better swap the old sensor in to get a proper pressure reading. BTW, I just found your channel and love all the troubleshooting and explanations. Please keep it up!

    I love that Chrysler vehicles make retrieving codes so easily (keying on and off 3 times). Probably the reason why Ive been diving them since 2000 (4 Jeep Grand Cherokees all with 4.0 til 2019, now a Durango and Dakota both with the 4.7. Nothing newer than 2003 😉

    On the oil pressure sensor you are correct. On the dash on Jeep's and Dodge Dakotas I know for sure are also like this. They indicate on the dash but not corresponding to oil pressure. I come across one failing intermittently it would indicate on the gauge a on - off type indication bouncing from absolutely no oil pressure indicated straight to somewhere around the middle where they all run. Repeating this same malfunction. Testing with a vohm didn't match the on - off fation the guage was carrying out. Yes I guess its a Jeep thing. Another goofy deal

    My 1991 Ford Ranger had one of those "placebo" gauges. It was connected to an oil pressure switch via resistor so that the gauge would show mid-high when there was pressure, and pegged low otherwise.

    All the WJs up until 2002 or 2003 had a real sensor that would read pressure and when they switched to a dummy switch they didn't want to reconfigure the cluster so people didn't think they "lost" a feature. It was done to stop complaints to the dealership of low oil pressure since it is hard to explain to the customer that it is normal when the vehicle is hot on a hot day to have a lower pressure at idle. LOL

    Alot of cars and trucks use an oil pressure switch, with or without a Guage, fyi most temp sensors lie on the dash too, it will show 190-200 on the dash rock steady but if you watch scan data they vary much more than the gauge shows, gives people the warm and fuzzies that the gauge is rock steady in the green

I bought my first two nearing 20yo, then a few nearing 15, one at 12 (gasoline up to that), and now I have a 11 year old diesel. Heck, no need to get electric unless diesel prices skyrocket. Seems to have similar fuel efficiency to what they promise for gasoline hybrids, and the technology is far simpler.

    Eric, in industrial automation, some two wire sensors have a constant voltage supply and the device varies the current it sinks. Usually they vary between 0 and 40 mA. The application is for long leads or noisy environments. Have you ever seen that approach used in a vehicle?

    Until I read some of the other replies I could not help but thing whilst watching that maybe the cluster had been swapped out to one that had gauges and originally this vehicle had a cluster with idiot lights only.
    It appears from other comments that this is not the case.
    I remember doing this back in my day and fitting the appropriate sender for a gauge.
    Nice video

    I believe the way the oil Pressure sending unit works is coiled on the inside. The pressure from the engine pushes up through the coil which changes the voltage under the pressure high pressure high voltage low pressure low voltage. Or vice versa.

    Re: P0155 .. I've read loads of blogs, etc.. that say that Jeeps require OEM O2 sensors. I've replaced my bank 2 sensor 1 twice with after market. Both showed fail and turned on the engine light. All the readings show that the O2 sensor is good and working. For some reason, the aftermarket sensors don't talk to the PCM.
    Thoughts?
    Best video I've watched on this. (Tied with the guy who shows how the OEM sensor and the aftermarket sensor on the computer and shows how the aftermarket, while working, isn't reading through the PCM)

    Those pins can be reused. Pull out as much of the old wire as possible, tin the end of the new wire then flatten it with pliers, trim it short and solder it to the crimped portion of the pin. This won't work with some connector housings there is not enough room for the solder blob/wire but for most it works fine.

      "It's a switch, Eric! It's a SWITCH!!" I don't get to work on too many Chryslers, but that "sensor" looked way too much like a GM oil pressure switch to me.
      GM is guilty of having a "switch gauge" setup, too. It seems to have been a thing with that era of American vehicles. I've been told that it was done to provide familiarity to those used to seeing an oil pressure gauge on their cars and trucks dating back to the '60s and '70s, much the same as lower output V8 engines are still offered in trucks today because the mentaility of "a truck should have a V8" is still prominent. ;)

      Their legit oil pressure sensors/sending units suck too. The one on my '13 Journey failed resulting in a stuck pressure of 99PSI engine running or not. And man do they suck to replace too! Under the intake down in the valley between the valve covers in an opening I could barely get my hand into and at an angle to boot. My biggest worry reinstalling the replacement was cross threading it.
