Buffy was the first big rock tour I was on way back in Australia in 1974. She was a delight to work with, not a diva and concerned that the crew were looked after. Thanks for the memories Buffy.
i love seeing this..joni on buffy...heck yeah!!! just saw buffy tonight in concert in nyc at the highline ballroom..it was pure magic! full of fire and beauty!
Buffy's voice at times would flutter and it was so cool. I don't know how she was able to do that and always at the right time on the right lyric vowel. Buffy continues to be a great artist.
I don't think she did it on purpose, it would normally be considered a vocal flaw caused by a lack of strength or control on sustained notes but I agree that she made it work for herself.
@@Mousehansen- There's a documentary on Tubi called The Festival Express with several major rock artists on a train performing in various Canadian provinces. One of the acts is Sylvia Tyson (Ian & Sylvia) who was a folk act. Great voice. In this documentary when she takes to the stage she sings in that fluttering style -- at first, I thought it was wonderful and different, but it gets old fast when you use it a lot. If interested you should check it -- I think that documentary will be leaving the site soon. It must be some kind of vocal approach or technique because I don't think Sylvia had a flaw, it was just the way she sang. Her tonality is smooth. Maybe -- Buffy was influenced by her. They're about the same age, both folk singers.
The 'flutter' is known as "vibrato". A little vibrato goes a long way. Sadly a lot of singers sometimes overdo it. I think Buffy sometimes did. Australia's Judith Durham (solo and The Seekers) also used the technique to great (though occasionally excessive) effect. But a terrific voice, both of them.
Buffy's cover of The Circle Game is in two movie soundtracks. The first one was The Strawberry Statement in 1970, and the second was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019.
My older, and only sister ( 8 yrs older than I ,) was into Buffy Sainte Marie when she was a college student, but I had no idea that Joni Mitchell was a fan as well, and worked on music the Buffy. S. Marie recorded later. Learn something new every day, eh?
These two women are so generous and yet so intimidating that it would be almost masochistic to have one's wish fulfilled to be in the same room with both at once...
Joni Mitchell born in the land of the chinook wind helped out the Italian folk singer , nice story

This Aussie Loves this Lady!
From one musical genius to another. Everybody wins.

I was there too- can't get enough of BSM, she shakes up the world wherever she goes! michaelmachine
Mutual admiration society, lovely.
Buffy Sainte Marie may not be as impactful as Joni Mitchell was, but she’s just as important.
Two of my favorite female artists of all time.
Love both these artists. I knew Buffy had recorded some of Joni's songs, but I this is the first I've heard of the connection beyond that. Love this.
Two magnificent artists. ❤❤

I know exactly what you mean and I’ve often wondered how she did that.
I don't think she did it on purpose, it would normally be considered a vocal flaw caused by a lack of strength or control on sustained notes but I agree that she made it work for herself.

@@lastrada52 Very interesting, thanks. I'll check that out.

So pleased to have shared this beautiful music with our children.
Both ladies made an impression on my love of folk music.

I love both powerful lady

Love them both
I wonder what kind of opinion Joni might hold of Buffy now...
ALWAYS loved the sweet honesty of Joni Mitchell's voice, no longer any kind of fan of *Bev* Sainte-Marie.
Joni is so beautiful.
It's hard to picture Buffy Ste-Marie walking around with a purse...
0:37 there were even less Indigenous women writing songs, so there was a niche to fill that was hard to resist.
Italian magic. 🤭
Love them both.
You mean Bluffy?
Very cool--much obliged.
Sorry, but some Keshagesh had removed the whole documentary you had linked ....I wonder if he earn a single cent by doing so.
Pretendian.
Wonder if Buffy is related to the crying Indian of the 70s who also happened to be Italian
God bless you.
I am a 71 year old island girl and am just getting clear on how all these pretendians hurt me... I idolized them.
Where is the rest of the doc?
read the title comments
Does Joni know that Buffy is playin pizzaria karaoke nights now ?
lol. Pretendian. She conned them all.
1 druggie talkin about another who cares ?
Shallow
There ws a cult of California musicians that bought up Kauai properties and slept around with each other in drug orgies... I was there
Just sad vibrato, Buffy.. :( You should have listened more to how Joni Mitchell did it.. I think Stevie Nicks heard you and copied it.. :(
Sad vibrato? She has had a wonderful career with many fans, whereas critics like you only have your opinions.
Everyone's entitled to their sad opinions.
Have you ever heard that everybody's voice is unique like everybody's fingerprint? What are you trying to say?
Agree with you completely. Made her sound like a talented Yoko Ono.
