The Queen’s Gambit Declined is the most popular way to fight the attempt by white to give up (gambit) his c4 pawn. It has been played by top masters since the 19th century, and it will never lose popularity due to its solidity, flexibility, and the amount of different options it gives to black.
In this video I have covered the Tarrasch Defense, a quite irregular way for black to play the QGD. A defense which solves the strategic issue of the bad light squared bishop on c8 immediately, but leaves black with a different type of downside - a potential IQP.
In exchange for his weaker structure, black gets dynamic play. The Tarrasch is a defense for aggressive, dynamic players, who don’t fear having a weaker structure or static weaknesses if they can have dynamic advantages to compensate for that.
The good news is that the defense is easy to learn up to a point where you can play it confidently. The lines are very forced, and the first 9 moves are a must play for both sides. With practice, it’s a great weapon for black and could lead to very interesting double edged positions.

I have always appreciated your opening videos. They are some of the best on yt.
Stay humble! Stay awesome!
Thank you:)
Agreed. Too many opening videos focus on opening traps that are easily punished by players who know the theory. At my level I need solid chess, not cheap tricks
@@HangingPawnsHi Stjepan, I wanted to ask if you can make a video on the Schliemann Defense 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 f5!?
Your videos on d4 openings made me use it as my main weapon again. Now I enjoy the game even more. Thank you sir!
Me: Loves playing d5 and c5.
Also me: Never plays Tarrasch Defense.
Good work keep it up. It's so helpful watching your videos. QGD is one of my favorite opening...
I have watched a bunch of your videos and assumed you were FM, IM or GM! Awesome to see an adult learner (like me) investing so much into this beautiful game. Only wish I had seen the art and music of it back in my early years!
I just started reading through FCO: Fundamental Chess Openings and this is the first part of the book.
This video really gave me a better understanding of the Tarrasch Defense.
Thanks.
The same thing brought me here.
Are you done reading it, how far are you?
Same! ✌
Thank your for great videos. The best I was able to find to study openings in depth.
An excellent presentation! Thank you
Haven't seen Tarrasch for a really really long time. Thanks for showing modern lines, playing with isolated queens pawn can be great fun, but sometimes it becomes a curse :)
Very good Tarash basics. Thank you so much
Very nice! Thank you....
The only RUclips video I have seen which has no hate on it + no dislikes. Great content buddy! Keep going :))
Thanks, very nice!
I love this defence and have had some of my best results with it.
U really have a very good collection. Its gonna help a lot of people.
Thanks for excellent content....👏👏👏🙏
No problem!
Love all of the opening vids! Can you make a video about the budapest as well?
Is that the Faj?
The guy in the thumb kinda looks like Machado de Assis, amazing Brazilian writer, one of the greatest ever
With your videos, my meager chess.com rating has upped more than 100 points in a month. My queens gambit thanks you 🙏
You're missing the 6.dxc5 line,. A very important mainline and a reason why many Tarrasch players ditched this opening.
Ditched means that they stopped using it?? What is the best counter to queens gambit ?
@@alexvallex5487 yes they stopped using it. Still playable below the master level ofcourse. There is no 'best' opening. QGD, Slav, Semi-Slav, Nimzo, etc...all good!
@@KeepChessSimple thank youu
Aagaard analyzes this move with the latest engines and concludes 6 ... d4 is a good followup by black
@@KeepChessSimpleIn this video he says 4:18 if e3 them C4 can be given an exclamation mark. But when I checked with the engine it gives a question mark for this move C4. Because e4 break comes immediately.
24:54 "the bishop is a tall pawn" 😄
Playing this as well as the c5 open catalan is great because you can play the catalan defense against the English and KIA and almost always transpose to one of them, so you just have to learn some weird reverse benoni set ups
Thankyou stejpan
Hey @Hanging Pawns I think you should have at least mentioned black's alternative on move 4.cxd5 cxd4!?. It's the Von Hennig-Schara gambit and while it may be rare on the highest level, it's venomous. If you don't know what you are doing with white, you could easily end up being clearly worse or even lose in the opening.
Yeah Chess Tempo gives 4...cxd4 about an 8% greater chance of winning as black. Chess 365 rates it as about equal to 4...exd5, but with less draws for both sides. White has 2 major Queen options afterwards, one appears to refute 4...cxd4 and the other results in equality. High risk; slight reward.
can you make a video bout the sniper? 1.g6 2.Bg7 3.c5
When bishop goes to e6 on move 6
"ahhh he didnt cover this!"
Can you make a video about the colle system?
So according to leela chess zero, after those four pawns in the center, after cxd5, exd5, white should response with e3, protecting the d pawn. It will lead to equal position, similiar to queen pawns game.
Other than that, black will always have slightly better position, if not winning.
Alot of response from players are dxc5, with intention to win a pawn and make isolated pawn for black, but after black response with d4 attacking the knight on c3, black will have alot of chance to take his pawn back and have alot of opportunity to make dangerous attack.
It seems this opening pretty solid, GMs should play this more even in classical.
I would be very interested if you, in the d4 opening series, would cover the dutch... I mean the stonewall, Leningrad...
What do you think about that? I did not find any videos about the dutch on youtube unless a short coverage from the saint Luis chess club... but it is 'basic' in my opinion... Anyway I really appreciate your contents!
N. Briglia The Dutch defense is coming if you look at the schedule I think.
Nice Work man I wanted to know when did you gonna cover the Trompowsky Attack ?
March 22nd - 25th.
Hanging Pawns Do you plan to cover rare openings like 1. F4 and the Austrian Defense?
@@HangingPawns Thankkks I looooooot
I played against Fm with white pieces and when he played c4 on b3 ,he didnt play Qa5 )))
And took on b3 )))
What if black challenges white's knight with knight e4?
Maybe some word about Von Hennig Schara Gambit?
Hey which is the best defense against d4 ? Which one do you prefer that is used by most grandmasters? Thank you !
I think it is probably nimzo indian
Most dynamic and one that creates imbalances is the Nimzo Indian but the Semi Slav is also really *really* annoying to face and strong players like Vladmir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand use it as their main again d4 c4 but at lower levels (below titled) Nimzo Indian paired with Queen's Indian should be good
@ 2:30 you said black has a queen Pawn that’s not easy to defend. What prevents White taking it on his next move because his knight and Queen are hitting it?
@RickProduction no, if white takes on c5 you play d4 (as black) and then take the pawn
@RickProduction no, 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5 4. cxd5 exd5 5. dxc5 d4 and etcetera, 6. Ne4 Bf5 7. Ng3 Bg6 8. Nf3 Nc6 the pawn is a goner
@RickProduction how can the knight be attacking it if the pawn is attacking the knight?
Can you plsss cover Dubov‘s Tarrasch too? I think it‘s a better attempt and would like to conquer English players with it.
Hi, I have all repertoire with IQP with white and now I start to study the Tarrasch for black. My answer is: but after 3. Kf3, can I play again c5??? Or Is better another way???
Andrea Chimenti yes you can and should play 3...c5

When will you upload your next road to GM video?
Jan 30th will be the last game of Zadar open, and then on Feb 6th I will cover all 7 games from Rabac in one video:)
@@HangingPawns I see, was it that much pain? ;)
Will you cover Rabac?
On Feb 6th in one video. All seven horrible games....:D
Wow
Anybody noticed that the pawns on the thumbnail are a mirror image of what they should be?
I have. It's been bugging me for a day! For some reason the image flipped and I just automatically added annotation without noticing. Well. It's unique:D

Deja vu. I can no longer retain opening lines in memory but I think you just covered every game I've played as white. So that's why black does what black does. Still, I'm not impressed with black's game to play this as black.
I agree. But look at iqp wins by strong players. You will get the picture.
What does black play then that gives you the hardest time?
@@rathelmmc3194 As a 1. d4 and 2. Nf3 player I get to these positions via transposition. This may be enough to answer the question. Black isn't playing on his own terms. A long time ago I figured out I could hold the advantage as white indefinitely and against almost anything. This is probably a lesson in the value of the initiative. I'm definitely pragmatic as white but imaginative as black.
Isnt the tarrasch defense refuted?
Lol no. Only the 6.dxc5 line is a little annoying for black
It's not advisable to play it against 3.Nf3 because of transpositions to Catalan structures, but here it is ok... As if I knew, lol.
@@ottolehikoinen6193 if White goes for the Catalan you can still play the Tarrasch. Lines where White delays Nc3 is part of all Tarrasch books.
Is this a White or Black opening? I just watched Eric Rosen playing it with White and he gained a big pawn center without threats. If it is a White opening why are we seeing it from Black's perspective?
Horas salam anak Medan 😀😀😀
It's almost a system for black
I am very egoistic , narcissist , stubborn also intelligent. I have not learned chess from anyone in person just youtube videos and I got to intermediate level in few months . But I aim to go the higher levels by watching your videos. I would like to consider you as my first teacher. Thank you for the videos.

I always told u but u never listen to me. I play G3 first move. Make a video on G3 in depth covering all lines for white. Example G3 D5 G3 NF6 G3 G6 G3 C5 G3 E5 G3 F5.
Because it can transpose to other openings.
