I've just purchased the 918+ two days ago. I Wish I knew about the 920+ before making the purchase as a first time NAS user.

When are Synology going to start catering to creatives who need a faster connection to their NAS? QNAP do. Surely Synology can give us a direct USB 3.1 connection.

This dude has genuine charm. I tuned in for a couple years to watch him talk about NAS. Finally hit the subscribe button when he tried to destroy that Seagate drive that just wouldn’t die. Great content, genuinely knowledgeable and an excellent communicator.

Like to see one of these for DS918 vs DS420 Comparison, with a focus on should a new buyer who wants the upgradability (ram/ssd), and probably wont add a drive bay extension. Should they grab a 918 now ... or wait for a 420 and actually save $ over the 918?

still haven't seen any 918+ bargins. not even on span dot com, even if they were, they'd keep the price the same until the 920 comes out

As I was listening to this, I started looking for prices on the DS918+ and DS920+. If anything the cost of new 918+ are higher -- disappointed.

Terrible video You fail to tell your viewer that the DS918 has an expandable capacity of up to 56TB and the new SD920+ has a capacity up to 108TB of storage. plus the CPU is 30% faster that's nothing to scoff at! and they are selling at the same price so why not upgrade or if you are new buy the new version.
    Please redo this video

I had this very decision to make last week.
I had a DS 214 Play with two 8Tb drives that I'd out grown for backing up my photo and video footage with huuuugggge bit rates. I also render all my RUclips masterpieces in the h.265 codec.
When deciding, price played no part in my decision making however the KILLER APP decision was the ability to transcode h.265 codecs.
I'm never going to max out the full performance potential of my DS918+ so why would I pay an extra £50 for a device that can not play a file format that I render my movies in?
I've only discovered this week how to use my new toy to backup with Synology's own apps. I'd been using FreeFileSync and Windows File History. Doh!
It took me a week to get my head around how to use Synology Drive. Its not that easy and the Tutorials I found were very basic as in creating a test folder, a test file and then deleting that test file.
They did not hint at methods of protecting 6Tb of personal stuff that will never see the light of day. Not everybody has a small business with teams of co-workers to mess up the files.

Just like Intel did a few years ago, they refused to give up an i7 Chip that had more than 4 cores. Not until AMD, their competition started rolling out 6 8 and 12 core CPU's at a much cheaper price did Intel start producing faster CPU's THANKS AMD!. WTF? Sinology needs some serious competition. These lousy processors speeds is the reason i would not buy one not to mention the memory expansion and nickle and diming everyone for every little feature is just absurd. Its ridiculous! Give us an i7 processor, give up 16gb dependability and a reasonable price. QNAP needs to pull their fingers out!

I was looking to pick up a 'run out' model of the DS918+ here in Australia but it appears the usual price gouging is in place. The price of the DS918+ has just gone up $40 in the last 2 weeks at the businesses that sell this item. I noted the prices 2 weeks ago and nearly all retailers had this model at a similar price around $729 AU, just the freight costs were different. Suffice to say all are now advertising at significantly higher prices $771 AU - $800 AU?

Just saw new privacy policy today (Thursday, 14 May, 2020) which need
to be acknowledged if i want to even open package manager which says a
lot about data collection and 3rd party processing and all that BS... I
have not acknowledged it, cancel it but now I can't use package manager.
They have not given any option to opt out so I won't be able to run,
stop, update anything about the packages...even older package until I
permit them to use whatever they do under the name of data collection
    and data processing.

Why is it disk stations with expansion options don't cosmetically match with the DX517? Side by side the DS620 which isn't expandable and the DX517 look the same yet the DS920 (just as the DS918 & DS1019) look different

I am between the 920, 918, and 420 ... I see you say go for the 918 now.. but not sure I would agree with the two being as close as you make it sound. That CPU is quite the difference not to mention DDR3 to DDR4 and base frequencies. Side by side it looks like the 2020 series is 40% faster, but I am sure it will appear less during practical applications.

Question: Both show up to 8GB. However, I've got 2x 8GB SODIMM RAM modules (Crucial CT8G3S186DM) in my DS918+ with 16GB total (the NAS lists 16GB). What am I missing?
Edit: I see you have a video on upgrading to 16GB (nice). Still seems odd the new DS920+ would still limit to 8GB. Seems odd.

thats just the official spec. the 920+ is limited to 12gb because 4gb are soldered onto the mainboard and there is only one ramslot

Ethernet is best on 1 and 10 Gb, not 2.5, This is made for homes so going 1Gb makes most sense. With that said, if they had a 10Gb I would get it just to say I had my NAS connected to 10Gb more so than needing it. If it were 2.5 Gb I would avoid it because I would be throwing my money away.
