  • Oral health and its influence on systemic disease is of paramount importance to the dentist and our ability to holistic patient care. The bidirectional relationship between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus is well established.
    The role of diabetes mellitus as a risk factor in the severity of periodontal diseases is recognized within the new classification of periodontal diseases. The lecture will explore the evidence of the periodontitis diabetes mellitus relationship and include a scoping review of what is known within the South African context.
    The burden of diabetes mellitus and periodontal diseases will be explored. The evidence of the pathogenic mechanisms that underplay the relationship between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus will be examined.
    By a scoping review, the SA context will be investigated.
    The inclusion of a case study will guide the diagnosis and treatment planning within this patient group.

    Dr Anthea Jeftha BChD (2001), MChD (2009) Oral Medicine and Periodontology (UWC) is currently Head of the Department Oral Medicine and Periodontics at University of the Western Cape.
