Recently I posted my "Move-in with Me/Dorm Tour" video, and surprisingly, you guys gave a lot of feedback.
Amongst the comments, I was asked the questions "How do i get in?" and "What are the requirements?" and I decided that a follow-up video would best answer those questions!
Because I felt like I was completely on my own and helpless during the time I was applying to Parsons, I really want to begin making videos with personal insight on what could have helped me during the application process.
As I share my experiences, hopefully I could make this "scary" process a piece'a cake for y'all! So if you have any questions, just ask me and i'll try my best to answer!

1) How important are high school grades?
2) How significant are your freshman year in high school grades for Parsons? Is it true that universities only look at your 10-12 grades?
3) How competitive is parsons for you as an individual? (getting in)

I made it to School of Design in Switzerland!! I'm starting next week :) our theme was train so I drew 6 artworks with different techniques with trains on it. Sent it per mail. Round 2, I did a drawing test in the school, I have to draw a ladder and more. Last is the interview and portfolio. It was hard work indeed! but they were impressed by my drawings and the fact that I'm only 16 lol

@Rein Sarin Hey! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing! I want to encourage you to apply! Many of us here at Parsons only have experiences that were self taught prior to coming to school. If you know that Parsons is the way that will direct you towards your goals, then definitely consider transferring! Parsons offers a broad spectrum of majors and directions, and it'll give you lots of benefits. Good luck!
Do you think you can show us a portfolio? Or give some tips on preparing one?
Im less worried about portfolio and stuff, but more about the actual environment of the school; i have heard so much about it and many contradicting things too. Things such as attitude of peers, proffessors, etc and curriculum

I am applying for Fashion Design at Parsons and I am stumped on the portfolio part. I have a portfolio already, but it is sketches of my designs. Am I able to send that as my portfolio or are they asking for drawings and sculptures and things of that sort?

Btw Tiffany I will be applying for Graphic design here in School of design. The teacher said at my 3rd year of graphic design. I could do an exchange student! My parents agreed that I could go to Parsons for 6 months. I'll be 20 by then. :)

@Jqq Z Hey!! Yes the 3 pieces of art works definitely have to be yours! Remember, you can only use online resources for inspiration or use with the right copyright information. But definitely for the parsons challenge, since its a way to showcase your skills and style, of course you have to make it yourself. (:

Hi, I live in Australia, I am in my third year of high school, and my dream is to attend Parsons. Hi, I'm from England and am currently at an English collage for design which for America is the last 2 years of your high school so from 16-18 English students go to collage then finish collage and go to university! (Not the best explanation) I'm studying fashion design and have always wanted to go to parsons just wondered if you could give me any tips, not being from America I'm kind of lost on the whole subject of grades as English and American grades are different any help would be appreciated thank you x
Hello!!! Awesome video! It was so informative *u* hehe I really want to try apply for Parsons for Fashion Design but i was wondering afew things...
1. If i wanted to show an outfit design:
- does a collection count as one piece? or is it more of just only one outfit.
- can i just submit a drawing or must it be made then photographed.
2. Also, i wasn't too sure since i only saw that International students can apply for Spring, but i'm from Australia, and i was wondering if i could apply for the Fall term, or is it just Spring?
3. Sorry, another question: Does the portfolio only show the finished product? or should you show the process in which you took that led you to the finished product? Cuz i know some schools want you to show how you developed a concept...if you get me?

Hi Tiffany. Thanks for sharing the insights! I have a non-art related bachelor (pure business), but I do a little bit design and painting on the side, wonder if Parsons has a tendency of recruiting pure art background students? or as long as the portfolio showcases your relevant talent?

Justin Chan Hey Justin!! Thanks for watching!! xoxo And don't worry! Many of your credits will probably be transferrable. There are many liberal arts credit requirements as well, even for Parsons students. So don't you worry. You can always check what is required on the Parsons course requirements page. just wondering, i would like to attend parsons and i have been doing a lot of research on the school. i want to know what are the school hours and if u can have a job while going to parsons and what is the cost of the school. PLEASE REPLY, IT WOULD HELP ME A LOT
Hey Arianna! The school hours is a little difficult to calculate as it varies among individuals. There are classes that range from 1h 30 min to 6 hours (the studio courses). But yes, you can have a job while going to Parsons. I know many other students that are interning/working, and I myself am working a federal work study job on campus. The cost for tuition alone is $42,090, but it varies annually (it usually goes up).

Your video was so helpful!! I'm getting my portfolio ready for fashion design and it's been stressed over and over again that it shouldn't be filled with fashion designs so my portfolio is filled with art pieces. Do I need at least some fashion sketches or designs though?
+Julie Chen Hey Julie! Because they dont have specifications of what major you are applying for, they dont require that you have fashion sketches or designs. Something that my art director told me is that you can try to bring a little bit of fashion elements into your fine art pieces for the portfolio, but it's not a requirement i believe. Im at my last year of high school and I'm not from the U.S. I've been trying to apply for the bfa major in fashion design but my biggest problem is that I don't know how to draw and I'm super scare about the portfolio. Right now I'm just starting my preparation for the toefl and I'm a drawing course. About the scholarships is it really difficult to get one? I mean I'm like an average student. Your opinion would help a lot!!
Hey Fiorella! It's okay to not be a skillful drawer as I mentioned in the video! After all, that's why we go to school - to learn right? Hahaha. Don't be scared about the portfolio. Just try your best, and most importantly, don't be scared to try out new things! Just demonstrate that you have the potentials to grow and improve. Scholarships, especially for international students, is a little tough to get, but it's not impossible. If you work hard, I know you'll make it! Best of luck!
Hey there, I wanted to know what grades and credits do we need to apply at parsons for undergrad program.
U do not have to apply grades for the application to be completed I think , it's just for extra scholarship money
ALSO I have no clue what's the parsons challenge!

I wouldn't say it's easy or hard as it is difficult for me to say. it really depends on if they see potential in your expression through art. if you're interested and have well thought out concepts then I think it shouldn't be difficult (:
Hi! Great video! I am a first year design student in India at Indian School of Design and Innovation, Mumbai. It is affiliated to Parsons NY. I wish to transfer into parsons for my second year. What kind of work are they looking for in a transfer student's portfolio? How hard is it to get in as a transfer student?
+Mrudula Kuvalekar Hey Mrudula! I believe what they are looking for is the same as for a regular portfolio application. It'd would be nice to have a variety of mediums expressing conceptual ideas, and anything that expresses your style or taste. I can't say for sure how hard or easy it is as I am not in the admission committee or are a transferred student myself. But I can say I have many friends that are transfer students and I dont think it's too difficult! give it a good shot! Good luck in all your endeavors! (:

I don't have the definite answer, but from what I understand, Parsons in general is one of the top fashion schools and many students apply, which results in a big flow of applicants each year. However, from what I have seen and heard around me, Parsons is not too selective with the applicants and in general do accept many students.
And as for the high school certificate and age requirement, I'm not knowledgeable of your country's education system and how it is transferred to Parsons. If you have any questions about that, perhaps you can try shooting either the international student services center (ISS@newschool.edu) or office of admissions (admission@newschool.edu) an email for a valid answer. Hi! it is this one only "Fashion Marketing: Write a one-page analysis of a fashion marketing campaign you feel has been successful." i am really stuck on this one thank you. i haven't written anything.
From what I have learned here at Parsons, the way I would start this is by doing a little basic research on some of the fashion marketing campaigns that is out there. If you don't have a basic idea or no brainstorm of any fashion marketing campaigns you know of, then it's always good to get a input from an outside source. So search on google or other sources to see what has been successful. good luck!
Hey, I'm thinking about applying to parsons next year. Does your portfolio have to reflect what major you want to go into? A representative told me she wanted to see more 3D work which I have never done before. Is it a requirement?

hii, I was hoping if you could give me some advice. I'm only on 10th grade and I already know that I want to study in Parsons but I was told that I needed experience and I don't have much, do you think I should start taking a basic course or some classes?
Hey Renata! I wouldn't say you needed experience prior to coming to the school per se, but having a creative outlook, perspective, and expression is key! As long as you are able to convey your creative concept then you are good. I dont think classes are a definite necessity, but it cant hurt if you really dont think you are able to convey your ideas or if you feel lost on how to approach the application or art process. heyy so i was wondering, i wanna go into fashion design as a major, but i noticed that parsons' portfolio requirements are pretty general. do i have to submit general art/design pieces for the portfolio or would i specifically submit fashion design related pieces?
haiimonobear Hey! The portfolio requirements are pretty general even for fashion design students. Technically until sophomore year you are an undecided major. And so they dont expect you to know all the fashion related things. For your portfolio, have a wide variety of mediums. And you can have fashion related themes here and there, but it's not required. They are just looking for your general skills and ability to grow - your potentials. I hope this helped! Thanks for watching!

Is giving a portfolio required for every major?

Hey thanks for replying. I also wanted to know if you work either on campus or off campus, do you find it hard to balance work/school and life. And also what's min. Wage over there.
I work on campus and i think it's great. It's not too hard to balance, especially because on campus jobs work around your class schedule. The minimum wage is $8.75 in new york, but on campus jobs from only what i know starts at $10.
