Marty, this lesson is genius! This riff was so hard for me to play until you told me to go out of position. Now it's so EASY! Thanks a ton. Plus that new chord shape will be extremely useful!
I wish I knew Marty, he's a really good guy and it's awesome how he makes us free guitar videos to teach us instead of showing off like most youtubers.. Thankyou Marty!! It's really appreciated!
I just bought an electric guitar and thanks to your vids I can already play like 3 songs in 2 days! This one is definately next! Thanks man, you're doing a great job helping real beginners out. Keep it up, you're the best!!!
Hey guys why are you leaving all these dumb comments. Really, you don't have to point out when he's flipping the bird in the video on accident. And all these comments with profanity could be done without. I love all of your videos Marty and you really got me into guitar. I think you're a great teacher. Keep up the good work.
@marti2k7 : You have a floating bridge. It's supposed to be like that. If you want to turn it into a hard-tail, take the back off and screw the springs all the way down and adjust your action with the saddles. MAKE SURE you do this with your strings off or at least loose enough not to put tension on the bridge. Cheers.
How can you so much better than all other teachers on YT? You rock Marty! You could teach someone who hasnt even touched a guitar how to be a lead guitarist in 15mins lol.
@marti2k7 : After looking at my Strats, the highest one is just a wee bit under 1/8th of an inch from the body, two are between 2 and 3/16ths, and my "frankenstrat" is a hardtail and it's all the way down. And for your 2nd question, yes - it will affect the action and lower the strings, hence the needed adjustment to the saddles (unless it turns out that the action is better for you that way). Cheers.
I don't know if you respond to comments but I have some questions about this riff. On the third walk I noticed that, with a little foresight, I can use my middle finger to bar the 10th fret E and A string. Then I don't have to make the fast jump from the E string to the A string. But if I do that then the two strings ring together. Is every note supposed to be muted on the neck? It seemed like you were muting them on the neck but you didn't mention it so I'm not sure. Another shortcut I noticed is on the fourth walk. I can bar the 9th fret E A D strings and stay there for the whole walk. But again it causes the notes to ring out. I think it sounds better if they don't ring out but it increases the difficulty but if it's the right way then I'll practice it and get faster at it.
I'm getting my first electric guitar in a couple day (had an acoustic for a while). What would you guys recommand? Something not expensive, good and for a beginner/interm.
I am an absolute beginner and I'm saving just now to get my own guitar. But sometimes when I mess around with my mates guitar, I feel that my fingers are 'stiff' and I find it hard to move between chords quick enough. Is that normal at the beginning and is there anything you'd recommend to 'loosen' up the old digits? Great video though by the way, when I get my own guitar I'll be giving this a go :)
this was one of the first Marty videos that i watched and i said "fuck that, i cant even come close to that...and what the hell, im not going to tune to drop D" Then i just stumbled upon this in the watch it again section and am playing the whole sone in less than 10 minutes. thanks marty!
@JPHJ14 most acoustic guitar brands have acoustics with built in pickups now. so try fender, ibanez, taylor, martin etc. (taylor or martin if you have the budget lol hehe)
@marti2k7 : You may also need to adjust check your intonation. It's somewhat involved, but you could always take it in and have it set up the way that feels best for you. I recommend you always have a guitar setup professionally until you get a handle on how to go about doing it yourself.
hey marty i just got a fender strat my first elec guitar and i dont know how but my bridge is sitting way high of the body how do I fix that? ~ Great Vid man cant wait for more
Great lesson as always Marty, i'm cheating a bit though when i play this, instead of goin drop d i keep it standard, miss out the e string on the power chords (less chunky sound but still allright like) and play the note variations in the riff on the e string at 10, 8 and 7 frets instead of 12, 10 an 9 in drop d, its the same notes an easier to play, well for me anyway.
hey it seems like you use a pedal, and I'm lokking for a a bit crunshi distortion pedal, any recomendations ? :D Greetings from Faroe Islands..and yeah, you're deffently the best teacher on the internet!!..and thanks for all your videos :)
I play on a line 6 spider IV 15 and its epic, its only £75 on GAK.com its got 4 channels which are customisable to your taste, it also includes a inbuilt tuner and sounds just like martys, with this amp you will sound like a true gutarist. hope that helped, Brad!!
@LPFAN1919 I haveSpider IV 15 and the closest I come is to put it on metal preset then adjust the bass to full and turn the drive about to halfway. Also turning down the tone on my guitar helps muddy it up a bit. The drive on these is okay but can't really replace a distortion pedal.
@WoWbobby3 Try putting your finger on the lower end of the fret ex: if your on the 5th fret play closer to the metal in between the 5th and 6th it should get rid of the metal noise.
Can you PLEASE do a video for Papa Roach "Scars"? Yea I know there are a ton of others who have video lessons for the song but I you're fun to learn to lol thanks!! 😜 you're awesome!
sometimes when i try to do it too quick, the 9-10 on the A string comes out a hammer- on and in conjunction with the picking, it sounds awkward. im not sure if im trying to play the riff too fast or its my fretting.
zombieman2122 That means your fretting hand and your picking hand is not syncronized. Slow it down, and slowly work up your speed, and try alternate picking if you haven't already.
+Stian Berg. Hi man i don't really know where else to ask it.. so.. I really do understand that to play that riff I need alternate picking and that my left needs to be in perfect synch with my right hand so i can reach the speed buth is there a way of picking also to make it easier for myself? already much tanks even if u will not reply sorry for my english!! and i'm asking this becose i watch this lesson and the lesson from cifra club in 25%speed and it's seems there not doing the same alternate picking PATERN. ale bye bye
@OStarskyandHutchFanO that's normal for beginners. the more you practice, the more smooth it'll feel. there's some good speed excercises for beginners that you could try. marty probably has some up. sign up for his free program to get some good things for beginners.
I love yur blog man and this tutorial got me pretty quick to play Last Resort and it worked a lot! thanks for thay man! I was wondering if you can make a tutotial of The one who laugh last from Downplay? I would love to learn that song and aply it to my band, thanks marty!

It's really appreciated!

marty is getting better and better with each lesson :) loved it, hoping you'd make some more of the modern rock lesson in the future.
@marti2k7 : You have a floating bridge. It's supposed to be like that. I love when you make a mistake you go into extreme improv mode! :P

Hey Marty, I know you won't answer this question, but is that a SG special converted into a SG Standard? Cool lesson.
hey marty i just got a fender strat my first elec guitar and i dont know how but my bridge is sitting way high of the body how do I fix that? ~ Great Vid man cant wait for more

@WoWbobby3 Try putting your finger on the lower end of the fret ex: if your on the 5th fret play closer to the metal in between the 5th and 6th it should get rid of the metal noise.
The Lick he's playing at 0:23 is from a solo but I can't put my finger on it.
Anybody an idea?
Lol a lot of solos sound like that
ceeg93 AC/DC back in black
Flying Kitty No, it’s Brain Stew by Green Day. Back in Black is a little different
i love papa roach!

haha a real classic in my opinion one of my first songs when I started guitar playing :3
@Th3R3m1x3r its a e book which has cords that should be learned and makes playing guitar easier.
did you change the humbuckers or is taht a different guitar than the one you used to teach on step closer by linkin park?
sometimes when i try to do it too quick, the 9-10 on the A string comes out a hammer- on and in conjunction with the picking, it sounds awkward. im not sure if im trying to play the riff too fast or its my fretting.
slow it down, dont rush it
Having exactly the same problem dude haha
zombieman2122 That means your fretting hand and your picking hand is not syncronized. Slow it down, and slowly work up your speed, and try alternate picking if you haven't already.

do you guys prefer normal gibson SG or epiphone SG????
I love yur blog man and this tutorial got me pretty quick to play Last Resort and it worked a lot! thanks for thay man! I was wondering if you can make a tutotial of The one who laugh last from Downplay? I would love to learn that song and aply it to my band, thanks marty!
