Last summer, I was hiking in the Julian Alps in Slovenia and listened to this album while climbing to the high peaks and wandering through the vast forests. Every now and then, I found WW1 graves and played tunes on my acoustic guitar to honor the memory of the soldiers
This song perfectly displays the feeling of pure desperation and the horror of senseless but inevitable eradication of life. Absolutely stunning and cutting to the core.
This song almost made me cry. They successfully captured the desperate of fighting in a cold and isolated place, far from home, friends, family... A 10/10, no doubts.
I live a few dozen kilometers from the place where this cover photo was taken. And, yes, life is strange: a beautiful album, a soldier perhaps resting in one of the many war cemeteries, my great-grandparents who experienced the horror of war. And here I am, writing this comment, moved 😢
I’ve probably listened to this track around 20-30 times now and this is some of the most well written music I’ve ever listened to. Completely unparalleled in their writing in this genre besides maybe ThyLight. Fucking brutal at the end and that funky little jazz solo in the middle was a total breathe of fresh air. AND my favorite part of all, 16:00 when he opens up that Vickers gun to the blast beat. Amazing all around, come visit Ohio sometime.
@shyguy streams Pretty sure it's a speech by Wilhelm II. It's either him or Otto von Bismarck. They used to have a translation of it somewhere on this video.
@shyguy streams @Michael Mclurg According to a comment from the full album by @blable bliblo the speech is from Karl I: "The speech in the beginning was recorded on 16th Feb 1916, spoken by Karl Franz Joseph of Habsburg (then heir to the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, later known as Karl I.) for an organization that supports widows and orphans. Text freely translated by me: "I was at all fronts, with all troops of our glorious army. I saw all nationalities of the far monarchy heading fully united for a great goal, a glorious peace. In the eyes of all soldiers, pugnacity and confidence in victory could be seen. One heard expressions of the deep love towards our adored, highest lord of war and of the unlimited faith in god from the mouth of each of these heroes. Also admirable are the heroes of the back lands, the silent endurers, who, through the war, either lost their most beloved or live in constant fear and worry about their relatives. Worthy of this great era is the war aid, where everyone that is unable to defend the fatherland with sword in hand, strives to lessen the severe woes of our virtuous warriors through infinite benefaction." "
It's funny you say Thy Light, because I've just listened to this track in full for the first few times and it reminded me of Thy Light's In My Last Mourning and Bathory's Twilight of the Gods, especially the solo.
Cold, so cold The mountain air, thin and spare The sun obscured By endless winter Winds rush through the valley pass As snow falls upon icy paths From pale white it fades to red With the blood of my comrades From the canyon floor To the tundrous peaks The cannons belch forth Through the many weeks Frozen, starving In fields of ice This barren trench Altar of sacrifice Holding position In oceans of white My hands go numb From the frostbite Man the machinegun Against the next wave Snowblind and shivering Send them to the grave Blood of these men Spills on the land Fruitless offensives From frontline command Perched on the watchtower I see their advance Through deep snow Without a chance Feeding the belt Round after round Another regiment Savagely gunned down The story of war Blood and revenge Just like the winter Will never end Blood And the blood covers the snow Blood And the blood covers the snow The forest, the mountains The valleys of crosses And the blood covers the snow
CMV: If the whole album could match this track in its brilliance, this would not only be the best atmospheric BM album of all time but also one of the best best albums of the decade. this song is just a 11/10
Agreed. Although the album is an absolutely great album, this song is the greatest black metal song I've ever heard. And we're talking bands like Emperor, Dissection, Watain, Deathspell Omega, Leviathan/Xasthur, Silencer, Elffor whatever regular black/dsbm/melodic black, etc, this song is the king.
So atmospherically melodic! Amazing song, but the album as a whole is just great! Lest we forget the men who were swallowed up by the mountain, and lost in the snow.
The term "epic" fits perfectly with this track. It transports me to another time and place, full of struggle, fight with the opponent and raw nature. I browse the internet through photos from the Italian front of the IWW. It's amazing how in these times people can create such a long, but sticky piece that is neither boring nor too long.

I apologize to the 4 downvoters that this wasn't a fake tanned covered chick with pink hair and long plastic fingernails who is singing about shopping and breakups.

Cold, so cold
The mountain air, thin and spare
The sun obscured
By endless winter
Winds rush through the valley pass
As snow falls upon icy paths
From pale white it fades to red
With the blood of my comrades
From the canyon floor
To the tundrous peaks
The cannons belch forth
Through the many weeks
Frozen, starving
In fields of ice
This barren trench
Altar of sacrifice
Holding position
In oceans of white
My hands go numb
From the frostbite
Man the machinegun
Against the next wave
Snowblind and shivering
Send them to the grave
Blood of these men
Spills on the land
Fruitless offensives
From frontline command
Perched on the watchtower
I see their advance
Through deep snow
Without a chance
Feeding the belt
Round after round
Another regiment
Savagely gunned down
The story of war
Blood and revenge
Just like the winter
Will never end
Blood
And the blood covers the snow
Blood
And the blood covers the snow
The forest, the mountains
The valleys of crosses
And the blood covers the snow
I like that a lot.
Thanks for that
