I always have made a point of ignoring the clickbait on the internet that says "make your wood longer and thicker" but I'm glad I clicked on this one
Bro 😂😂
you won the internet today!🤣🤣🤣
LOL!!!
I'll have to give some of those other clickbait ones a try now. If they're as nice as James I'd even trust them with my credit card number
Agree, Ryan 👍 Like so often; my immediate reaction to titles on YT, news, etc. depends very much on WHO (or where) it comes from. And James here has always been a guarantee for quality, no matter the titles or content, in all the many, many videos I've seen from him. Though I miss his humor from his old videos :D
Stay happy and safe, my friend 👍
I don't run into this problem any more, not since I got a couple of those new rubber tape measures.
🤣
Dang James, that rotated angled piece-trick for end grain is genius!!
Very useful techniques, especially when trying to use up "scrap" wood.
Unbelievable, while the stretcher was a very worthy watch, the Thickener knocked it out of the park! Wow! However Stumpy Nubs is known for Home Runs! I'm always impressed! Thank you for sharing !!
Aside frome from being an awesome woodworking channel, i luv that you promote and avertise products that are relevant to the channel. I actually watch them.
Thank you very much!
I not only watch them, I actually buy them! (Or put them on my wish list to buy later.) As far as I’m concerned, if it’s Stumpy Nubs recommended, it’s the one to get. I trust you implicitly, James Hamilton!
These jig videos the past few weeks have been my absolute favorites. Thank you so much
This is absolute genius! Thickening a board end looked great I can't believe I've never seen this done before and I bet I missed it in other people's work it's so good.
That was actually really cool to see.
Really is amazing how much one can learn on the YT channels and this is obviously no exception...
Thanks James! This is awesome advice and, as always, it’s presented with crystal clear step by step easily reproducible video instruction. I tend to get frustrated when my stock is just barely under for the project, and that frustration leads to panicky searches for a suitable replacement. With this knowledge, I will be able to keep my head and seek a solution with a clear head and measured actions. Priceless.
As always Stump, Thanks!

The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
I heard about the board stretching a few years ago but never tried it and never seen it before. Very interesting to see it work. 👍
This is the only channel I would trust to click a link with that title 🤣👏
I love that board stretcher. When I was in retail we sent newbies to the back to get the shelf stretchers. Lol
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you!
Thanks to you, I now have the Trend Stealth. LOVE IT!
That was pure genius!! I have never thought of either of these before. Thanks!
These videos are gold. I learn something and it get me thinking about using they tips in future projects ! Thank You!!
Thanks for sharing those tips and the make!
These tricks are so smart! I have found it surprising how many woodworking skills are in many ways similar to sewing skills. That scarf joint is very similar to the process of creating bias tape.
This is like that Hershey's chocolate bar illusion where you cut a diagonal line through the bar, take a piece out and then re-arrange it to make it look like you never took a piece out in the first place.
HA-HA !!
This is the secret hopefully mom never finds out about. Like the missing liquor she used to keep in the back of the closet. I don't have any idea where it went. It was years ago. I promise.
My sister used to break candy bars in half, carefully align the bottom edges and nibble off the top several times until they were as "close to even" as humanly possible. Then she would let me pick which piece I got... you know, just to be absolutely fair about it, and so there was NO WAY she could cheat me.
It took me a while to catch on. In later years, I came to the horrible realization its quite similar to how the IRS and U.S. Government work "Fairness" when it comes to "Taxes".
Like ! Scorched ! Peanut ! And Honeycomb ! Bars ! Are !!
That's amazing. I never have thought about a scarf joint in that way. Which also means I've never used a scarf joint either. But it's definitely something to keep in my log of used woodworking things, that don't get used often. But when you need it, it's comes in handy. Thanks for another great video.
Hi James, Thank you so much for this video. You have just reminded me of being taught these in school by my woodwork teacher and I had totally forgotten about them. Thanks again and take care. Cheers, Huw
Thank you. Filed under useful end grain joints!
This is amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Great tip! Many thanks and hiya from Devon UK. Cheers, Marc
Love your work Stumpy
Mind blown on the increasing the thickness! Nice!
This reply is sponsored by China!
🤯 Thanks for the video!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing.
This is awesome !!
Both new tricks to me. Thank you
Well, you opened my eyes to something new once again! Thx.
So, I’ve been going through this channel’s videos for some time now. I kept skipping this one thinking it was some sort of cute joke, which would have been fine with me. Turns out it’s real and actually useful.
Now that’s some woodworking wisdom worth holding onto. Thank you for sharing that with us. Happy woodworking my friend
Good one! Thanks Stumpy!
THAT was so so cool. I learnt something today.
Awesome! Totally awesome!
Very, very clever. I like it.
Wow this is wild! Nifty little trick
Mind blown man!
Awesome ideas!
I like these short and to the point videos. Please keep them up.
Awesome tips!!
Once again, mind blown!
Those are great tips.
Cool idea! Thanks
Now these are the tips I’m looking for.
Good tips!👍👍🪚
Great ideas.
Man alive, I don't even DO woodworking.. and every bit of this fascinates me. Thank you once again, Stumpy.
Brilliant.
Pretty cool little tricks... I like it! Thanks, James
Oh... Wow! 😮
I really didn't know about those tricks!
Thanks a lot, James!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Nice pointers.
Very very cool!
Nice, I wouldn’t have thought of that. I’ll try that next time I run into this issue.
You're a borderline wood wizard. That was awesome.
Aiight that was a great set of tips.
Very useful information
Holy crap. Thank you.
Excellent video
i have to admit thats really cool.
That was awesome
That was fun! 👍😉
if you have a nice long track saw guide you can do this corner to corner and get a LOT of "stretch"
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Yet, Marius, though you say that every time, I feel that you are a fount of conversational festivity!
@@pawpawstew 😂
Great content
I really enjoy your channel, eh. Thanks!
Stumpy you are awesome!
Nice re-introduction of the scarf joint complete with a great jig to make it. Also like the make it thicker approach. That was cool. Keep it up sir - we are listening and hungry to be edutained!
Smart!
That was great James, thanks for sharing with us. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻✋🏻✋🏻
this needs more views
It's magic!
That's Freakin' Brilliant!
This is a great f-n video!
I knew about the stretching. It never occurred to me to apply the same principle to the end of the board, though. Thanks!
That just blew my mind
Honestly, i would never have been able to figure out how to stretch a board if you Haden’s given me the answer
I knew of and have used the scarf joint trick before, but the increasing board thickness by cutting off and reversing the grain is a new one.
Brilliant 👍 The board "thickening" trick would be useful if wanting to hide the edges of a plywood top/board at the same time, using pieces of solid wood matching the plywood, and it would look a lot better than the usual edge grain (look) of solid wood or worse, edge grain printed plastic strips trim!!
PS: I still have to see a video from this channel that isn't so interesting that I don't want to watch it to the end - and it goes for the very old ones too *big smile
Always a big 👍from me here in Denmark
👍🏻 cool
So mind-bogglingly hard and so simple when you see the solution, mind blown 🤯
On the stretching joint, could a biscuit or similar style joint help on the overall strength of the finished board?
I'm not sure if you talked about that, my mind was processing the "of course" moment.
Stretching instead of a scarf joint!! Cool
Excellent Board Volume Rearrangement Device (BVRD)
I've been looking for that damn board stretcher for years....🤣👍
You can use anhydrous ammonia to temporarily partially liquify the lignin in wood, and while it's in it's elastic state, you can literally stretch it. It's a big and expensive set-up, especially to contain and control the ammonia in an anhydrous state so not too practical for a small shop. I did my thesis on this procedure in my furniture design program way back in the early 70's. The Rochester Institute of Technology has several examples of 1" x 1" white oak literally tied in knots using this technique.
clever
Thanks Nubs.
You my boy blue!
Cool
I've never seen that "thickening" trick before. Thanks.
I had to check the calendar when the video started! ;P
My drafting teacher told us a story that his woodshop teacher had this "Wood growth formula" that the students could use on important projects so they woulden't have to recut wood if they cut them too short and he had the student stand the plank in a tub with the "formula" which was just water with some yellow/brown food coloring in it and leave it overnight. What the teacher would do is that he would take the plank and cut a new one in the right size and put it back in the tub before the next time the student was in class. He thought everyone knew he was joking until on a parents visit event at the school the father of one of the students asked where he could get some of the formula so he had to stand there and explain to both the parent and student that he was pranking them for a good portion of the year.
Hahaha, that was slick. I’ll remember that.
Well you got me on this one. Not a board stretcher but a splicer. Old trick. be doing it for years. Not a good Idea for structural members but great for when you need to use your finish materials wisely. From the comments below it's not a very well know trick so good job Passing it on to the next generation.
Did you watch the whole video?
Yes and it was very good and informative. I am one of those who would tease my laborers with sending them to find a box of toenails or getting a board stretcher. You are one of the best teachers of wood working on the internet. I look forward to you videos each week. I have gone back in your video history to watch your old ones too. I love your wit and humor
Stretching and thickening boards. Well worth knowing.
I have the Trend stealth mask. My daughter calls it my Darth Vader mask.
That sir is way cool.
